Thanks so much for watching!!! - Навчання та стиль
I wish someone would show which tape works best after being on paper for several weeks. Some tape has a great seal. So great in fact that it rips your paper upon removal.
I tried to remove tape from my drawing board after a month. It took the varnish off the board! Imagine what that would do to paper! Remove tape from paper asap. No tape can stay on paper for long without damage.
Scotch tape works and you can reduce ripping (with any tape) by gently heating it with a hairdryer first.
Awesome! Thanks for letting us know 😁
Thanks
Thank you. I'm just learning to draw. I am using an inexpensive sketch diary Pen and Gear paper. I purchased 3M Safe Release tape. It tore up the edges of my first drawing. On my next drawing I used a hair dryer and slowly removed the tape. Total success! Again thanks!😄
I'm currently about to do a painting for my boyfriend and I need to use tape, but I dont have any of that fancy artist tape so I was really worried scotch would bleed with watercolor, I am so happy you posted this lol it just made all my hopes for this painting grow much higher lol
Thanks for the review. Always helpful when someone makes an effort to compare and put product's through a challenge.
Very surprised the scotch tape was the best one. Nice job.
It would be great to see you compare them all on different weights and brands of water color paper. Canson 140lb cold press vs Arches 140 lb cold press for instance. Arches is much more textured.
Wow! I guessed that one up front and said to myself, “No, it COULDN’T be!” I so enjoy your videos, and I love your art. Thank you for sharing another great tip.
Linda L Miller that's what I thought too. Hard to believe! Thanks for watching, Linda 😊
WOW! Great test Jane! Thanks so much. Im totally surprised!!
This is really good to know! Very helpful. Thank you.
Wow!!!! Total surprise... gonna use it now in my artwork! Thank you!!! So helpful.
Thank you Jane for the brilliant comparisons! That really helped. I had trouble with the masking tapes on canvas and watercolor papers. I found Scotch-Blue 2090 Safe-release masking tape was pretty good but from time to time it damaged the watercolor paper when tearing it off. Will definitely give a shot on the Scotch tape. Wish I found your demo much earlier! 👍😁
Thank you for this informative video. It has certainly helped me choose which tape to use.
Great info! Thank you Jane!!!
You are the best in all of You Tube! Thank you so much for all that you do.
I can't believe it. Thank you so much! I was ordering tapes and I didn't know which to choose, so I wathced you video. Amazing! This tape I can find everywhere. :)
Just started trying out watercolour painting and building up basic supplies.. This video was fantastic. Thank you.
Lucky you, coming upon this tip early on your journey!
Interesting results! I will have to do (or find) a similar test for acrylic/canvas applications.
Wow! That was a plot twist at the end!
I'm kind of surprised that you didn't test actual Artist Tape (the brand name) when you did this. Thanks for taking the time to do this. :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! That was my next experiment. I will try it for sure now.
Thanks Jane - great job
Amazing. Well, I guess we learn something new every day. Never would have predicted the #1 winner in this contest!
5:25 tape removal 7:38 winner reveal
Yes, thank you. Americans (especially the women) love the sound of their own voices. I wish they'd just get to the bloody point. They need to make these overly long videos for the income. They wouldn't be able to afford medical insurance otherwise! 😂😂😂
Just what I was hoping for-thank you!
Super! Thank you for this great video!
Very helpful review. Thanks!
Thank u for this! So helpful.
That was super helpful! Thanks
Totally agree. I have been using Scotch brand tape for my alcohol ink painting since the beginning because it sticks well, gives crisp lines and can tolerate heat without curling.
The only thing you can't do is get any moisture underneath. When you apply it, the surface has to be dry. I feel like that goes without saying, honestly, but thought I would mention it. :)
Great comparison video! Thank you!
is this washi tape or scoth tape ??
pls tell me the type of tape and brand name also
Do both #1 and #2 picks pull off without taking paper with them? Thank you for the super tips!
Wow this was so surprising thank you for doing this video
Scotch tapes leaves a super bad sticky residue, I just used it over some gouache paint and it ruined the painting.
i have found this with scotch tape aswell 😩
scotch tape always rips up paper for me.
That is great to know, thank you so much. That is one of the biggest issues I have had. When I was working with watercolors it seemed like no matter which "artist painters tape" I used, it wanted to rip my dang paper! Masking tape likes to rip it too. Looks like when the tape starts coming out in bulk for the holidays I will have to snatch a bunch! lol Thanks again Jane!
scorpionzdezignz you are welcome. Yes watercolour is definitely more problematic. Washi tape is great on watercolour paper also.
Alcohol is a common solvent used to dissolve glue etc. which is why the adhesive on the tape will get dissolved and hence paint will bleed.
great to know!!!
Excellent info!
Great video! Thank You ♥️
I’ve had trouble with tape tearing my paper even when I try the tip of putting it on my pants first etc. I’m really surprised the scotch didn’t tear the paper!! I’ll have to try that.
Sherry
Put it in your pants?
@@DancingQueenie it's a technique where you place a length of tape on your pants, or just about any clothing or cloth, and when you remove it, the tack has been reduced, thus, less likely to damage paper when removing it from your artwork later.
I haven't tried it, but I have heard professional painters speak of it, and they recommend it.
Of course, use good judgement and do a trial run on scrap paper first. You might have trouble with seepage, if the clothing lint that does cling to the tape is too abundant, and blocks the tape from masking cleanly enough. For instance, I would *not* use a cloth with a bunch of large lint, like bath towels, fleece or flannel.
Something tightly-woven, like denim, twill or lawn cotton would be best.
Thanks for this! Saved me some time. The painters tape is terrible for keeping my yupo stationary and not having the inks pool underneath. Who'dve thought its our basic scotch that works! I'm just trying with the gloss finish one right now as thats all I have at home right now. Don't tell scotch or they'll mark their prices up ;)
I had to subscribe on the sheer basis of your Scotch tape tip. It's one of the best hacks ever IMO, and l wonder why no one has suggested this before. Not only that, but it's about one one hundredth the price of Washi tape. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
That’s hilarious 😂 I was going to buy some more expensive artist tape and I thought I’d check out a review first. I do have a bunch of magic tape and I’m going to try it out 👍thanks.
Thank you!!!!
WOW! Have you notified Scotch? They may need to send you a supply for advertising for them ;)
Lol...You have a point there! Thanks for watching Juanita :-)
Who knew! Thanks for the info.
Irene Devore welcome 😊
Nice and interesting video! Thank You! Good Job! Scotch magic!!! Was Magic.
Grace Lerch 😊😊
Thank you so much !!!
gr8eft You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 😊
Great video, didn't see that one coming!
Silvia Arndt lol. Who would have thought.?!
Yay! You just saved me money as I've been uncertain which brands to buy to add to my collection... Will get some scotch magic tape today!! Thanks Jane 😘
HybridWorld Art you bet! 😊
Ha! I said (out loud, in a restaurant at lunch) "what!?"! You got me! Great video, great tip! Thanks for taking the time to test for us!!
Jana Morrelli lol. That's awesome. I was surprised too. 😝
That's incredible! I think that the advantage with washi tape is that it is available in different widths as opposed to the Scotch tape.
David McRoberts you bet. Yes that’s true 👍🏼
Good point!
That was a "magic" result and should save quite a bit of cash. I love your experiments and results as it helps so many people discover the best methods. Have you ever used Dura- Lar or glossy photo paper with your alcohol inks? Thanks again for an informative video.
Terry Howson ha yes it was magic. Thanks for the feedback. No I haven't used dura-lar but I have used Yupo translucent which is similar.
You've saved me lots of shopping (and disappointments), big thank you !
lol...wow! Thanks for the tip!
wow!
Aja Arrow 😊😊
Do you think that the scotch tape will work equally well for painting on wood? (Most of my artwork is on a wood surface)
Enjoyed your video BTW!
As soon as I saw the winner I got out of bed and rushed to write it on my grocery list on the counter! Just recently placed a watercolor paint set order after not having done watercolors for about 20 years!
Great, thanks so much! And you didn’t see any evidence of the Scotch magic tape, 3m expressions, or washi tape tearing or pulling up the watercolour paper? I’ve had this problem but not with these brands.
Wow
I have used Scotch magic tape and it’s ok for the first 60 minutes or so then after a while, it starts pulling away from the paper and has to be constantly pressed down so I stopped using it. I even resorted to using a bone folder to press it down and still it comes away. This is on watercolour paper btw. I now use washi tape and have no issues, it stays put.
Thanks for doing this experiment, I didn't notice weather you pressed the tape edges well as I usually use a bone folder to do that so there will not be any bleed with painters tape. Also have you tried watercolour masking fluid on Yupo as it's great on watercolour paper. Thanks again
Neena Me thanks for watching 🙏🏼. No I don't fold the paper. It's just pressed it down well. Yes, I have a whole video on using masking fluid on yupo for a cool drip splat effect. 😊
Jane Monteith no sorry didn't make myself clear. Did you press down all the tape edges to make sure no bleed under tape. You said here that you did but I didn't see that in the video. I use my fingernail some times to make sure and have no trouble with bleed on Blue painters tape.
Neena Me oh yes. I press down on all edges. 👍🏼
Can you please do a similar video for acrylics on canvas and wood panel, on unpainted and painted surfaces?
I'm an Acrylic painter. I'm wondering how well the scotch tape will work on Acrylic Paints. Also, is it acid - free so it won't remove any paint that may be on the canvas already ? THAT, my dear, was a TOTAL SURPRISE to find out. But, I'll try it out tomorrow before buying any special painter's tapes. TY for sharing this video with us.
That is pretty surprising. I would have thought it could damage the watercolor paper.
Sherry B I know I was actually surprised for all of them on watercolour except washi. I've used that a lot on watercolour paper. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
nice
BTW.....that seemed to be a smooth surface.....have you tried it on a gessoed canvas?? Thanks again
Does the Scotch Magic Tape rip off the watercolour paper fibers?
Curious to know how the scotch tape holds up when applied ON TOP of painted surface as a mask. May have to experiment with this unless anyone has experience here.
Good Job Jane. Very informative video. Question does that Magic tape come off the card stock without ripping it?
Bernice Seigel it didn't rip or tear the watercolour paper. It is a heavier weight of paper and I was gentle removing it. 👍🏼
The question is does it work for acrylic paint?
Its 2020 and I bought a Scotch tape for myself, since Washi tapes in India are priced exorbitantly
would the scotch tape work with spray paint? woukd it leave sticky residue
Does scotch tape work on a canvas
In my experience, magic tape is good at producing crisp lines but not as good as washi tape in holding down watercolour paper to a board.
I've noticed the same thing. It's great for clean lines, but definitely comes loose if you paper buckles even a little bit.
And do we get crisp edges on canvas as well?
Ambika Choudhary Mahajan hmm. Not sure as I tried this on yupo only. Let me know if you try it in canvas! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
i tried using scotch tape last night, and it mostly worked well-but there was definitely spots where the watercolor went under the tape. do you think it only works if you use a small amount of water?
bullpoop04 did you press it down well? What weight of watercolour paper did you use? I used a heavy wash and it was fine. 😊. Thanks for watching.
hmmm...maybe i didn't press it down well enough? i used it on 140lb paper
bullpoop04 not sure. Maybe. But if it’s still not working next time, use washi tape on watercolour paper. 😊
Is Scotch Tape Magic Brand easy to remove from paper?
Everytime i've used scotch tape on canvas paper and moleskine sketchbooks it's wrecked the edges, even with careful and slow peeling, AND sticking it to another surface first as a precaution. If using either of these surfaces , best avoid.
Great info. Now what about curves?
John Jwm29 lol. I work with taped curves all the time. I should do a video on it. 😁
Jane Monteith Waiting!
Ambika Choudhary Mahajan lol. Soon!
Wondering if you burnished the tapes before hand, I am not sure if I saw that you pressed the tapes down with equal pressure. Hmmm
Which Scotch Magic tape ? The removable one or the one advertised as "you can write on it"?
Yes
lol i hate that tape tho my paper ripped off ;-;
well question does it work on bond papers?? (i only use oil pastels and color pencils)
What about using magic tape on Rough watercolor paper ????
Did you test a tape brand called Tess?
What about the edges of ceramic tiles when using alcohol ink? When I blow the ink and in goes down the edges, the ink penetrates the edges.
Hope Bilton I would tape the edges as best you can
Thank you Jane. BTW, I meant to tell you how much I have enjoyed and learned from many of your videos. I hope to one day be as wonderful as YOU!!!
Hope Bilton 😊😊
It would be helpful if you identified the type of tape you are using. One works well for watercolour at the beginning but as we don't know the name of the tape we don't know what it is.
If you watch the entire video she's gives the name of each tape.
I've been using magic tape for years. rarely fails
But is it archival?
I tried the magic tape on my watercolor and it tore the paper. Did I do something wrong?
I have had this issue also - I wonder if it depends what paper you use - I use Arches cold-pressed -What do you use ??
great test but i just watched another test where the clear scotch magic tape ripped the paper. hmmm.
OH. MY. GOD. FLOORED
I need to try this on canvas now
I wish Scotch made thinner tape. I can only find it in washi.
I really appreciate this video. However, it seems like you didn't run your hand down the tapes in the same way. When you put the masking tape down it looked like you barely even smoothed it out at all to make sure it was stuck to the papers well. Just an observation.
😲?......🤯
Do the same test on regular watercolor paper (say hot press) and #1 wont be scotch tape.
1 tape, name
last time i used washi tape for that it totally butchered my paper :-(
Scott always tears my paper
It was a good test BUT you didn’t press down on all the sides before you started to paint. Some sides were lifted. You might have pressed when you painted but the paint already got under first. Watch your video.
11:44 for those of you who trust that the testing process was scientifically rigorous and free of any bias.
lol. It's still the best tape! no bias. promise
Hilarious!
mmmmm.... I dont totally buy this. not her experiment I think it was a good thing to test and she did a good job, but my main concern is time and repeated usage. I currently just use white masking tape and dont really have problems, but tape always seems to get tougher to take off after weeks and weeks sometimes a month for me to finish my piece? I just wonder how well these would come off of they hadn't just been freshly put on and after repeatedly getting wet again and again.
A Merry Kat I’ll have to try :-)
@@JaneMonteith ah ok! thank you! I'll keep an eye out :)
If you heat the tape with a hairdryer, gently, it softens the glue.
What the hell? Why are you not sharing the brand of the tape? How am I supposed to know what brand to buy?
