Another idea if you can’t have tarot cards in your household is to go with cartomancy, which is a form of divination with regular playing cards. You’d probably have to be mindful of when you do readings so no one walks in on you or hears you shuffling cards. But if someone looks through your stuff, it won’t raise suspicion, it’s just playing cards after all.

I realized awhile ago that Uno cards can line up fairly well with the tarot system also. You just have to determine how to designate the cards in a way that works for yourself.

Yes playing cards have been used for divination for much longer than Tarot! And Tarot (same as oracle, Sibille, Lenormand and more) are all types of Cartomancy 😊 the “cartomancer” is the one who divines with cards ❤️ although traditionally (as in when and where it started) it was mainly used as fortune-telling 😊

Solitare and other forms of "patience" card games are forms of divination. My mom uses it as answer for yes/no questions (if solitare is solved it's yes, unsolved means no)

I’m currently in the broom closet. I used to have an altar that I made in minecraft for my deities. I use scented candles that I think the deity I worship would like, and use my nightstand as an altar. Making tea and setting an intention with it (especially aided by a scented candle with the herbal correspondences) is a way I like to do a spell. Going for walks with a bottle of water for an offering to land spirits is something I also do.

I’m only semi-closeted. My husband knows, some of my closest friends and family.
I like candle spells-again, all about that ambiance and the intention is internal.
Journaling and scripting! It doesn’t have to be explicitly witchy, so you can explain as pop psychology if anyone reads them-Affirmations are pop culture, AND basically a form of manifesting. You could put them in a locked notes file on your phone.
I agree with nature walks, cloud-gazing, star-gazing, puddle scrying.
Water is a perfect offering outside. Carry a water bottle, because you need to drink water anyway. 😂
Self care! Showering is cleansing. Moisturizing your skin is protection.
Kitchen magic might be a good option, if accessible to you. Each ingredient has history as well as personal corredpondences!
    Stay safe. You are loved.

an offering for a god or goddess could also be:
    - researching this god or goddess
    - thinking of this god or goddess
    - writing poems, ...
    - feeding birds
    - collecting garbage in nature

I am not a broom closeted practitionners, BUT as a chronically ill person, I got in situation where I needed a little magical help but couldn't practice as I would normaly do (not sure the hospital would like me to light a candle for example). So for those situations that happens from time to time, I have two types of magic that I like to do : art and knots.
I feel knots in magic is quite known and well explain by many people on UA-cam. This is something simple, easy to hide and easy to have in your pocket if you need too. If you are a crafty person who likes knitting or something like that, even better ! It would appear as a useful passion, and no one will suspect those little knots have a lot of magic in them.
But the thing I did the most when I needed some magickal boost in the hospital were spells with art. You could draw the thing you want or need, use specific colors to match your intention. If you like to write, you can write over and over a few sentences on each other to hide the actual word but still putting the intention. If someone ask, you can say it's some anti-anxiety exercice that you've seen on UA-cam. You can invent your own magickal alphabet, and if someone ask you, you can say than when you were a kid, you invented this secret alphabet to exchange secret with your friends, or that you invent it to be a part of a story you write. Writting with a non conventional alphabet takes more time and it's easier for me to focus on my task and my intention. And if you are very creative, you can join secret writting and drawing at the same time, making really unique piece of art while doing magic. In my personal case, it helped me several time in medical situations, and the nurses (who thought I was an ass cause I'm neurodivergent) got very sweet and "impressed" with my creativity and "my great ideas to work on my anxiety" (it was in fact not what I was doing at all, but a win is a win).
Good luck closeted magickal beings, you go this !

Thank you so much for the great advice! I’ve been broom closeted for many years, even now after moving out of my parents house.
When I first started, conventional advice was to just keep all your tools in a shoebox under your bed, but I never liked that idea, because it would be even worse if someone found it. So what I do instead is keep a ‘travel alter.’ I have a small bag where I keep five small rocks and a stick that I found outside. When I want to do a working, I take out the rocks and arrange them as needed, and when it’s done I put them away. I like scattering my materials - if I need string I’ll go to the sewing kit, if I need to carve something I’ll get a carrot, etc. I can’t burn candles, so I do a lot of water-based spells. I like writing intention on scraps of paper, creating sigils, and doing energy work.
I know for new practitioners it’s easy to get swept up in finding books and getting tools, but those aren’t needed to do most work if you’re willing to put in the effort to find alternatives that work for you!

I've seen people making mini altars with Altoid mint boxes and i thought that was so cool! I have a necklace that doubles as a pendulum that I have connected to a deity. I also have a "candle collection" that have essential oils as scents so they have some things in there i can work with and also spices and herbs and things.
I also have an altar that doesn't really resemble an altar but looks more like a setting of collectibles. Like a bell I've colored black and written a spell on it with black ink so it's not visible but still works as a sound cleansing tool in the altar and some trinkets I have as offerings to some deities as well. I've just put some other seemingly normal things around them like like tins of pens and art supplies so it just looks like I collect things.
I also have a metal wind chime that has an Yggdrasil in the middle of it that just looks like a tree with roots as wall decor.
I love writing protections spells with salt water on surfaces since it isn't visible once it's dried and I can do when I'm home alone.
Some other thing I do is that I write a small little runic spell on a match stick and I burn it until the spell has burned so I can activate it and it disappears with the match burning away.
Edit- another great everyday thing I do as energy work is in the shower, I work with the running water as a way to ground my self and set intentions there and meditate with that. It works really effectively or taking spa like baths to rejuvenate the spirit as well. And glamor magic is really easy if you like doing makeup looks too.

Magical oil alternative idea: some businesses sell perfume oil in roll-on forms. You could look at a fragrance that has ingredients and notes that align with your intention, and for extra oomph draw sigils on with the roller!
AAAAAND when the perfume finishes, you can refill it with any magical oil and it will still look like a regular perfume ❤️❤️❤️

Sorry that happened to you. I just wanted to share an idea if it's helpful at all. If you wanted to retry making an object charmed to bring money you could get a piggy bank that has designs corresponds well for a money spell. It would just look like you're saving up instead of creating a charm to attract money.

Love this video!!! And there are really wonderful suggestions in the comments here! I just want to reiterate to anyone that is broom-closeted and struggling with feeling like they don't have proper tools etc. for offerings or spellwork - intention really is everything!!! Nothing has to be outwardly visually witchy. Simply having the intention in your mind and putting that energy into simple every day acts like cooking a meal, making that cup of tea or going for a walk in nature to honor your ancestors and/or deities is enough! They know your intentions (as well as your circumstances) and that is what counts :)

Thank you for this video. When traveling to visit family, I have rechargeable tea lights to use in place of real candles. If found, "oh, I like a little cozy light when I fall asleep" (and they don't set the house on fire!). I write my journals in a script inspired by runic symbols that I can read, but just looks like horrendously bad handwriting to anyone else who may discover them. I have used feathers or quill pens in place of wands, and have used flowers for spells and offerings, instead of incense. After the spell is done, I scatter the petals outside to release the work with thanks and a blessing. Always make sure the flowers you use are pet safe. I hope this inspires!

I am sort of a semi-broom closeted witch. While my husband knows I'm a more spiritual person. So he does allow things that are more "new age" type things. And using this I have expanded on this. I collect stone-carved statues. This can be animals or fluid anamorphic people, sometimes the circle of friends concept, sometimes lovers or an adult dancing with a child. But I use these objects to represent things in witchcraft to me, like the sacred union, a sacred gathering, the sacredness of parent and child. for animals, a stag could represent a male god of the hunt, a horned god, etc., and a turtle could represent Gaia, an earth mother goddess. A cay could represent Bastet or another female deity that has an affinity with cats. I have also found while thrifting, Aztec gods are popular tourist items and I use them to represent masculine god energy. I also use mini-carved works of art like small copies of Venus de Milo as a real representation of Venus or a goddess of love. Many of the Greek and Roman gods have famous works of art that can be used in plain sight as part of an altar that showcases these famous works. I have many statues from different parts of the world of famous deities, and now my husband also collects them just because he thinks they are pretty. For offerings, I collect stone-carved fruits and eggs. A pretty container can be added to your collection altar to hold little trinkets you gift to your deities. You can literally have an altar in plain sight that is all copies of famous works of art. An ancestor altar can be pictures of loved ones on a wall. who would think its witchy to have that?
I also charm jewelry. If scented oils are a problem, charm perfumes, and scented lotions. We usually have fragrances that are our signature ones, one that makes us feel empowered or romantic or just smells good to us. You can enchant your soap or body wash for cleansing. These can take the place od oils, incense etc. You can enchant your cleaning soaps to protect your house, especially if it has a scent that matches your intention. I've been known to accidentally leave my spray bottle of cleaner out in my mud room near a window on the full moon. You can add a tiny pinch of salt to any cleaner that won't be noticeable; Make routine cleaning into a ritual that also cleanses the house. Cooking can also do this, the addition of herbs and spices, the way one stirs, a little chant said under ones breath or in their head can enchant a meal. You can have your witchy books on an app for ebooks and have your device locked. use locked apps for writing your journal of Book of Shadows. My witchy books are on my Kindle app mixed in with hundreds of free titles that I have no intention of reading to make it harder to find my real books. Have plants in your house to bring that earthy vibe in. Maybe add rocks you've collected on walks. My husband gifts me necklaces of tumbled stones, amethyst, citrine, onyx garnet, etc popular stones in jewelry and birthstones without knowing any other significance to them. You can make an altar to the elements by grouping things that represent the elements together, a boat, or shells or a dolphin, a candle, a salamander, a dragon or a butter lamp, a bird, a butterfly, an airplane, and a plant, stone. a globe, etc and it could look like an unusual collection of items but all have meaning to you. I use bird feeders in my yard as offerings, feeding my cats and giving them water, leaving a bit of food on my plate from my meal, and in my mind telling the deities this bite is yours. There are many ways one can practice in plain sight without raising red flags. Even little old wives tales, like knock on wood, throwing spilled salt over ones shoulder. etc all came from the craft and folk magic. At one time our ancestors hid in plain sight these little traditions from the church that have become part of our culture. being a witch has usually been something to hide, not something openly celebrated. so we can use this to our advantage. find the pagan roots of those odd little things people do all the time and have no idea why.

For an ancestor veneration altar, any picture of your loved ones that have passed away will do, especially if they're framed. Pretty easy to explain in most households.
Also, if you really want to give food / drink offerings to a spirit or deity, get yourself a snack and leave it on a surface in your room/private space for a while, and make sure to inform the spirit that you're going to consume the offering afterwards if it's an acceptable thing to do in your practice.

You can also perform verbal incantations by singing songs that have lyrics aligned with your goal. If you don't know any song whose lyrics are suitable, try googling to find one, or use the soundtrack of a movie (or a series, anime etc.) that recall the intention of your magic. For example, I use a lot of anime songs whose story is aligned with my goal. I'm not in the broom closet, but sometimes you need secrecy anyway, and the Japanese language can be very useful to camouflage incantations, as it's not commonly spoken. But you can really use whatever songs you like, because in the end, you're only singing a song

My go to is magical room sprays. There are a lot of DIY room spray recipes out there online, and you can invent your own! Great way to cleanse or set the vibes for something while not attracting too much attention. Mine helps me soooooo much. The main one I have is 1/3 rose water (you can get it in baking sections of grocery stores) and 2/3 water (I use moon water but regular water also works). Super great to cleanse or refresh or for use in self-love things. Plus, it's a lot better for pets than other cleansing methods!

If you would like to use oils in ritual; You could transfer the oils into perfume rollers. Just make sure your oils are skin safe if you plan to use them on your body too. (Or someone should come across it and accidentally try it on. If you store it in the bathroom.)
Perfect for keeping with you while your traveling too.

Hey, I think, this merits a part two with how and where to get information if books and stuff are out of the question.
There are several levels of difficulty involved, and also, depending on the legal situation in one's country, several levels of risk, so there might be cases in which it is wiser to wait until one can practice safely away from economic and other dependencies and digital prying eyes like those spyware "accountability buddy" programs, into which young people in certain parts of the world might get bullied into.
As sad as it is, the broom closet is not yet an outdated or even unnecessary concept 😢

    - Often ancestor altar can be hidden in plain sight - I mean lot of people display their family photos and mementos on the shelf without doing any magic, just as aesthetic or simple rememberance. Also ancestor's photos can be placed in wallets. I don't think that many even stricter families would react very negatively to "my grandma is watching me from Heaven" thing.
    - For deities it's harder, but most of them has animal or plant correspondences, so small picture in nice frame of animal or plant, aestethic animal figurine, or actual plant in pot can be your centerpiece. With framed pictures there's also possibility to hide something between picture and frame backing :)

It depends on your culture / circumstances, but personally, I started experimenting with casually saying, yes, I'm an occultist / witch. People would look at me a little funny for a heartbeat and then we'd continue talking about the weather . . . As long as I don't ask them to think about it too much, it's usually all good. Nearly everyone is okay with "vibes" and "energy,."

My family actually liked me spending time at cemeteries, partially because they're usually connected to churches and partially because they're a reminder that you're going to die some day (my pastor father thought that would scare people to jeepers). If you're spending time at cemeteries just be respectful, don't sit or lean on headstones or anything like that.
