  • Death Valley Life #18: Sneak Peeks Inside Our Underground Bunker and the Community Water Kiosk
    3.9.22
    My sis and I cleaned some stuff out of one of our outbuildings so that we could open this huge trap door in the floor...which leads down to our very own bunker! And you'll never guess what we found in there!
    Then I go over to the community water kiosk where we get our drinking water, and talk to ex-Fire Marshall Larry, who spearheads the volunteer team that maintains our drinking water supply. Come to find out, our well is in danger of being shut down if we don't raise the needed funds to cover fees for water testing and the vending license...so the community asked me to spread the word and share the link to the GoFundMe they created. Chip in a buck or two if you can...thanks for watching!

    Being a water treatment plant operator i really enjoyed seeing the way a small R/O system works. The cleaning he was doing was to remove any types of calcification or compaction out of the membranes that would harm the efficiency of the treatment as well as damage the actual membranes. They are expensive to replace. Thanks for showing us.

    Thank you for sharing. In the mid-west that would be a root ceiler for long term food storage or tornado bunker, but in the 50's and 60's that would be a fallout shelter. Enjoy the bunker. Just remember if you add computers or other electronics in the bunker it will increase the temperature in the bunker.

    Your town water facility is good value here's hoping that there is a steady stream of volunteers. I've seen kitchens with three taps, hot, cold and pure (RO etc).
    Your root cellar looks like a fine food store just in case winter can be treacherous.
    Old mines are often at around 60 degrees all year, it's just the ground temperature. Perhaps a pipe dug into the ground near your perimeter would let you have a cool air feed for use in the summer.

    Hi Sarah,
    You only need a RO system under your kitchen sink. With a 100 gallon per day unit, you’ll-have plenty of great drinking water and it can directly hook up to an ice maker.
    Search for ten stage 100 gpd RO with demineralization stage. Under $200 !!!
    That put good minerals back in for amazing tasting water.
    I’ve had mine for about ten years.
    Replacing filters once a year is easy.

  • @garykarczewski6678
    @garykarczewski6678 Рік тому +1

    Sara, there are excellent filtration options you can add to the house to filter out all the toxins and make the water totally consumable. It may cost you a couple grand to do it right but you would have endless supply of on tap water which taste great and is prefect for cleaning and bathing. Your water probably is hard as hell like most well water.

  • @jtsdeals

    Definitely looks like a pantry / root cellar to store canned goods and other food. Nice to have that space regardless of what you repurpose it for. For reverse osmosis for your house, you would probably only need it under your kitchen sink with a 2.5 gallon tank. Those units are pretty reasonable - I use one for both drinking and for my reef tank. Although that kiosk is pretty affordable if you don't mind hauling water.

    Hi Sarah Jane. That phone you had was quite popular here in Australia and they worked off an analog system. The best thing with them was that you could just about get service anywhere unlike now where like 5 digital towers do the work of one analog tower. The downside was they were easy to tap into and have someone listening to your calls. Also we called them bag phones and most people just use to put them in between the front seats and leave them there.

    Hi Sarah, an under sink revere osmosis unit is $200 to $300 with a top rated unit costing just $250, another $100 or so a year in filter replacements, and $30 or so for test strips. Your spending over $150 a year at the kiosk so the expense to have it ready at your beck and call instead of 3 miles down the road might be worth the nominal extra expense. 👍✌

  • @softenerguy
    @softenerguy 2 роки тому +2

    Sarah Jane, you don't need a WHOLE HOUSE reverse osmosis system. Just a small little unit for your drinking water only. They come with a small faucet to draw drinking water that gets filtered and stored in a 3 gallon tank ready to use any time! You can buy your own at a big box store for under $200 and only have to change your filters once a year.

    Hi Sarah! I love the basement. Before you turn it into "Dungeon Tales" Central, be sure to pick up a radon test kit. Radon is pulled out of the ground by low pressure, which usually happens with storms, so I'd do a month-long kit for immediate peace of mind, but then a year-long one to include monsoon storms and more importantly, next winter storms. They're relatively cheap and quite simple; you just place them in the area for the specified length of time, then mail them in to be read.

    Tales From The Crypt... You only need enough supplies for 28 days in a nuclear blast situation. As long as you are not at ground zero that place should do the trick. That's a BAG phone and they are worth some money. They work great for analog but not too many cell towers that use analog any longer. They put out three watts so they were in demand before digital. Not sure if it is still there but there used to be an analog tower in Death Valley. My bag phone used to work there. But I lost the phone in a fire.

    Yes, that phone was most likely built and purchased back in the late 1980’s to make sure check the owners manual copyright date. It will give the more exact date of manufacture. What a lot of people don’t know is the cell network was actually started being built in 1974.

    • @badgerpa9

      Late 1960s had wireless networks in some areas, all calls placed through an operator usually a ship to shore operator. The bag phone was not introduced until 1989, the base unit was installed in vehicles earlier but not as a bag phone. AT&T had digital video phones in the late 1960s but no network to use them except in building.

    Urbanization: there really is a push among many politicians to "starve" people out of the rural areas and into the urban centers. The State really won't entertain installing municipal water lines or a large scale water treatment plant...eventually the residents will die off and those that are left will just move in toward civilization. Happening here in Upstate NY, lots of empty farms, changing zoning makes land use too expensive, small towns see schools close, supermarkets can't do business, etc. CA and NY are so much alike re: permits, licensing, etc. Hope that water kiosk can stay active for many years, good on you guys for keeping it going.

    If you're going to spend any amount of time in that cellar you must check for lead in paint and for radon. It's not deep enough or shielded to be a fallout shelter. Good storage space and possibly an office/lounge area. Stay safe Sarah.

    I have been wondering for a few years why desert residents don't use underground dwellings more than they do. This may be, like you said, the place to hang out in the heat of the year. I had one of those phones, it was pretty heavy. It isn't digital, so I don't think would work on any cell system these days. I used a magmount antenna on the roof of a work vehicle and later it was used at a horseback ranch to take reservations. I will donate a small amount of cash (20.00) to the water kiosk, it is a worthy cause.

    Sarah the rate table was for using the bag phone in that area. That is what ROAMing was if you left your normal network area and used some other companies towers and network you would pay that fee. Usually the charge per minute included any long distance fee if it was terminating in the lower 48 states. I still have a bag phone that turns on and when I used to service 911 centers we tried calls to 911 from old phones like that just to make sure even old technology would get to a 911 operator. Not every center does that or cares though. You would not be able to get a contract to use that phone now days though for normal calls. If you can charge the battery or use a 12 volt adapter it probably will turn on and do not much. Phone is from the 1990s. The bag phone I have is from 1989 and I still have the phone number but obviously not on the bag phone.

    Here in Saskatchewan everybody had a bag phone in late 80s early 90s. They worked outstanding in fringe areas. Better phone reception than today's smart phones by far.

      That is awesome I worked for a wireless company and when the bag phone was first introduced in 1988 I could not get one until January of 1989. SaskTel first cell phone launch was in August 1989 when they first turned up the network offered only in Saskatoon and Regina. Pretty cool people had bag phones ready to go for when the network got turned up.

    Two things you can do to simplify your daily life are to purchase a Brita Filtering Pitcher and their faucet mounted filter. Both are about $30.00 online at Brita's website. they do a very good job of filtering the water out of your faucet. Check them out.
    And, yes, your underground bunker will stay about 65 to 75 degrees all year round. Once you get about 5 feet below the surface, ground temperature stabilizes at about 70 degrees. That is an oversimplification, but it will be naturally cool down there in summer.

    Given the number of hot springs in the aria, it might be possible to pump hot water into a trough with a slanted top on it that drains into a collecting trough and feeds to a tank. In an enclosed place the steam should condense and produce a lot of water especially in the winter time. Not sure the efficiency but it might be worth doing some research. Passive solar distillation with a geothermal boost. There are probably no end of plans online you could adapt.
