  • G.E. Smith is central casting's version of the cool-as-fuck rock 'n' roll sideman, only he's real. He's the ruggedly handsome guy who plays guitar better than anyone else in the room, looks like he was born to be onstage/onscreen and knows where the real after party is-the one with Bowie and Dylan and Jagger. In addition to collaborating with those three, Smith has also backed up everyone from Roger Waters and Hall & Oates to Tina Turner and Buddy Guy, not to mention being the Emmy-winning musical director of "Saturday Night Live" for a decade. Smith's latest project is "Stony Hill," an album with soul/R&B singer/songwriter LeRoy Bell (Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Teddy Pendergrass). To paraphrase a popular song that Smith co-wrote during his "SNL" days, it's G.E.'s world-it's party time, it's excellent!

Grayscale with the wind blowing, trees swaying in the background, and chatting music with a legend. Absolutely amazing video!!!!

Never heard him talk before, only remember him from being on SNL with T-Bone Wolk...but this was cool as hell. I could listen to this guy talk about music for hours. Going from Shirley Caesar to the Clash like that? He’s a real one

G.E. sometime talks about working around and with the "cool cats" I hope he realizes he is definitely one of them!! Enjoyed the interview!

Bless ya, G.E. I just checked out Sweepin' Through The City on YT. It reminds me of a few years back when I found myself in Memphis on a Sunday and visited a church down a side road about a mile or two from Graceland. That day I got the Rev. Al Green in his church with a 4-piece band and a full gospel choir for 3 hours. I'll never forget it.

I enjoyed your 2 hour interview you have out. What really stuck out to me was when you mentioned the Dylan albums, and how you would carry them. Making sure everyone seen them. As I could relate to doing the same, as I carried them to friends places, parties, making sure everyone was aware of the message, and the depth of the lyrics. I'm two years older than you. Like you I was at Woodstock, left from Montreal with a buddy on motorcycle. I've seen the "greats" and the ones that should have been. Soft machine, stones in 65, Hendrix , doors, Janis, pink Floyd, etc. many jazz musicians.I would have to disagree with the who, the exact opposite in my case , they were deplorable, and phony in there stunt Show. I think The Troggs opened for them, and got a better reception.
Your video with Richard Gere, was hilarious. With him and his collection. It all looked very strange.
Your an excellent Musician, enjoy your stuff.

I like GE Smiths playing, melodic, bluesy, most of all TASTEFUL and he shreds when appropriate, it's hard to listen to a guitar player showing off and shredding for 2 minutes, "Look at me!"

I think I found the break G.E.'s referring to (at the 2:07 mark):
"I Won't Be Back" - The Caravans feat, Shirley Caesar (ORIGNAL VERSION)
