Q&A With Alex Maas (The Black Angels)
Despite the uncertainty of everything due to this seemingly never-ending pandemic, the always-working Alex Maas and his Black Angels cohorts continue to stay as busy as usual. The band just hosted its annual Levitation festival and is currently on tour for most of November before hitting the road again in January and February. Earlier this year, the Black Angels released Live At Levitation (which compiles tracks recorded by the group at earlier fests) and spent time in the studio with producer extraordinaire John Agnello for a new record. Maas issued solo album Luca (a mellow-psych LP named named after his son) last December and followed it up with Levitation Sessions (live interpretations of those and other songs from his catalog). If you're smart, you'll grab as much as you can.

Q&A With Josh Caterer (Smoking Popes)
Переглядів 6813 роки тому
Josh Caterer has always been a bit of a contradiction. He’s a punk rocker and a Christian minister. The Smoking Popes frontman’s latest solo release is a live album that wasn’t recorded in front of an audience. “The Hideout Sessions” (Pravda) features covers of popular standards like “My Funny Valentine,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Goodnight My Someon...
Q&A With Martin Phillipps (The Chills)
Переглядів 7913 роки тому
After the Chills’ 1996 LP “Sunburnt,” we didn’t hear another studio effort from Martin Phillipps and crew until 2015’s Silver Bullets. Fortunately, the singularly great New Zealand songwriter-apparently doing well after a life-threatening battle with hepatitis C-doesn’t want, or need, to take another long break, as we’ve been treated to two records since: 2018’s “Snow Bound” and this year’s “Sc...
Q&A With Jason Narducy (Bob Mould, Superchunk, Split Single)
Переглядів 2793 роки тому
Jason Narducy is best known as a sideman for the distinguished likes of Bob Mould, Superchunk and Robert Pollard, but with the release of "Amplificado" (Inside Outside), his third LP under the Split Single moniker, it’s well past time to recognize him as a talented singer/songwriter in his own, uh, right. Joined on "Amplificado" by drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Mike Mills of obscure indie ban...
Q&A With Nora O’Connor (The Flat Five)
Переглядів 5073 роки тому
You can tell a lot about a singer by the company she keeps. So even if you don’t know Nora O’Connor by name (though you really should), you’re probably very familiar with her voice. After all, she’s worked with everyone from Neko Case and Mavis Staples to the New Pornographers and the Decemberists to Jeff Tweedy and Dylan (well, Jakob, not Bob). O’Connor’s latest release is "Another World" (Pra...
Q&A With Kristian Bush And Andrew Hyra (Billy Pilgrim)
Переглядів 2213 роки тому
If nothing else, the past year has led to lots of discovery for all of us. Are we really happy with our jobs? Our relationships? Our lives in general? For Kristian Bush-half of '90s folk/rock duo Billy Pilgrim (Andrew Hyra is the other half)-discovery came in a different form. While he was doing some pandemic house cleaning, Bush happened across the sole copy of what was to be Billy Pilgrim's t...
Q&A With Gary Jarman (The Cribs)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
For the Cribs, social distancing came easy. The band of brothers-Jarman twins Gary (bass, vocals) and Ryan (guitar, vocals) and baby bro Ross (drums)-was already spread out across 5,000 miles and two continents. After dealing with some fallout from splitting with its management and the recording/releasing moratorium that resulted, the Jarmans regrouped, wrote some songs and then recorded and se...
Q&A With Len Kasper (Sonic45, Chicago White Sox Broadcaster)
Переглядів 2613 роки тому
Sonic45 songwriter/bassist and distinguished baseball broadcaster Len Kasper’s favorite band is the Who, so he probably won’t mind (then again, he might) if we paraphrase a number from Tommy and note that we have a feeling ’21 is going to be a good year for him. Not only will he be switching booths from Chicago Cubs TV to Chicago White Sox radio (pursuing a longtime passion), Sonic45’s debut re...
Q&A With The Nude Party
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
The Nude Party is what we wistfully imagine all rock bands were like 50 years ago. They live together in a house in the Catskills. There are six of them, including a percussionist. Their excellent sophomore LP, "Midnight Manor" (New West), comes with rolling papers. They got their name from their propensity to play early shows while naked. They sing about Chevrolet vans and hot tubs. They have ...
Q&A With Greg MacPherson (Figure Walking)
Переглядів 2343 роки тому
As you can tell from this episode of MAGNET television, Greg MacPherson is a man for all seasons. The multi-instrumentalist frontman of Winnipeg's Figure Walking has been releasing records for almost a quarter century and has been longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize multiple times. "Vertical/Horizontal" is the sophomore album from Figure Walking-which also includes drummer Rob Gardiner (Cond...
Q&A With Robert Scott (The Bats)
Переглядів 1513 роки тому
Aside from U2, the Bats are the longest-running active band that's kept the exact same lineup during its entire career. The highly influential New Zealand quartet formed in 1982 and has released 10 albums without any missteps along the way. Led by Robert Scott-also a member of equally great trio the Clean-the Bats have just issued "Foothills" (Flying Nun), another collection of 15 familiar-yet-...
Q&A With Naked Giants
Переглядів 3613 роки тому
The members of this Seattle trio-Grant Mullen (guitar, vocals), Gianni Aiello (bass, vocals) and Henry LaVallee (drums)-might be familiar to you because of the time they spent as part of Car Seat Headrest’s live band. But like we’ve said before, Naked Giants loom largest when following their own inspiration. The band’s sophomore album, "The Shadow" (New West), was one of the best LPs you might’...
Q&A With G.E. Smith ("Saturday Night Live," Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, Mick Jagger)
Переглядів 4,6 тис.3 роки тому
G.E. Smith is central casting's version of the cool-as-fuck rock 'n' roll sideman, only he's real. He's the ruggedly handsome guy who plays guitar better than anyone else in the room, looks like he was born to be onstage/onscreen and knows where the real after party is-the one with Bowie and Dylan and Jagger. In addition to collaborating with those three, Smith has also backed up everyone from ...
Q&A With Joey Burns (Calexico)
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
Given MAGNET's love for all things Calexico, dating back to when Joey Burns and John Convertino first started out a quarter century ago, the band's few forays into festive music have long been part of our annual Christmastime playlists. So when we heard Burns, Convertino and Co. were making a holiday album, we knew that even if Santa leaves us MAGA-shaped coal this year, we'll also be receiving...

I just love G E Smith. I saw him in 2000 in Bangor Maine in a Bar during a Sunday Afternoon Concert. The friend I was with bought a photo of him snd then dragged nme to the stage and introduced us and asked him to autograph the Photo for me. I was mortified. He is just areally cool down to earth guy that was very sweet . Excellent musician , singer , song writer . Could listen t him talk forEVER. THANKS for avgreat Concert that day. Wishing you the very best . ❤️

Trip Shakespeare albums and concerts changed my life and I love everything that came after too. Trip Shakespeare at the Metro c. 1991 turned my wife from someone who liked music okay, liked to dance, etc. into a hopelessly smitten fan. The morning after that show I woke up to find her playing Trip albums and poring over the sleeves. In other words just like any true blue music lover. Impressive. Long live Trip Shakespeare.

Seems very sweet throughout, but then gets briefly snarky criticizing songs that mention God. what an odd thing to be so triggered by. Mask slipped...

Religion and God is the absolutely most sensible thing to be "triggered" by. The real irony here is singing about "Christ"mas to begin with if God bothers one.

I miss these guys and still have them in regular rotation. Saw them multiple times back in the day and each time was amazing. I emailed the band when I heard they broke up and they actually responded. I have followed Shannon's projects and saw Slow Dazzle perform live and it was equally amazing. I would love to see her in Minneapolis soon.

One of the performances that changed my life was when I saw Trip Shakespeare at JC Dobbs in Philadelphia in the late 80's while I was in art school. I remember thinking 'how is THIS band in such a small venue?!', and felt so lucky to be there. I'll never forget Matt's pure charisma and smile while he played. The guy knows how to 'center the room'. And the music is/was such an magic blend of real heart, irreverent fun, and colorful songwriting. It gave me a new understanding of 'authentic voice.'

8:39 - I laughed out loud at this! Thanks Matt, for being pretty damn funny on top of your song writing brilliance. I regret that I never had the opportunity to see TS live, but I have a vinyl EP with the live versions of Toolmaster on one side and Applehead Man on the other. If I ever have to save anything from a house fire that isn't a member of my family, I will go back in for 2 things - that EP and my Aria Pro II 4-string bass guitar.
