    You hit the nail on the head when you said, "Live beneath your means!" That is SO key! So wise, for someone so young...many people don't come to these conclusions in a lifetime! You are such a beautiful girl, with such a beautiful spirit, Hilary, and I love you and your channel

    I love the idea of living below your means because then your not trying to always keep up. You'll have extra money for savings, retirement, college, etc. 💓🏠👍🏻

    Yes! Words that my mom always said to me too...there will always be people who have more than you and there will always be people who have less. Be content with your blessings. Comparison is really the thief of joy. Wonderful video! I so appreciate your real honest self shining through on your videos.

    Great advice. We always lived below our means. At the beginning of our marriage it was out of necessity. We are now reaping the rewards in our recent retirement. A quote that resonates with me is "I still remember the days that I prayed for the things I have now"

    My nan gave me a good tip she had eight children during the war and was on rations, she said buy a large chicken cook it and then strip all the meat off the whole thing , you get a large Tupperware full of chicken , we typically make a soup a curry , and a chicken pasta bake and we still have some in a sandwich, it’s a real money saver compared to buying all the meat separately.

    I love your humble soul and contentment with less. What a precious message at the end about some will have more, others will have less. Sometimes thankfulness starts when we change our perspective on all that we have right now. God is good.

      Take the time to look for a decent paying career that you can do from home. You'll be surprised what you can find nowadays. I worked for years as a medical transcriptionist from home as a single mom...until the industry changed. I literally got a job outside of the home when my youngest was a junior in high school.

    We use a antenna for TV so we don't pay for cable. We also don't have internet. I use the internet off my phone and it has a hot spot so that is how I upload videos, watch UA-cam ect. You are so right about free stuff to do. I decided one summer instead of going on vacation we would tour our own town. A lot of the stuff was free. Even the museum in our town has a free day once a month. Great tips!

    We bought under what the bank said we could buy! We are so thankful we are on our own budget and not so stressed as many are! Hilary, you can check-out books on line for free and also ask the library to find you a book on-line! I don't buy books, I wait until I can check a book out at the library or on-line! I can't afford $25-30 for a book! My husband and I have very wide and high in-step feet so we are forced to buy good shoes. I do try to watch sales on out shoes. Thanks for the great tips and some reminders!

    Great tips! I was a single mom while my son was growing up. It was a struggle. Buying clothing second hand allowed him to still be in style with his friends (kids can be so cruel) and be well dressed. I could still be the labels but not pay the price. I bought food on sale, etc. All good tips that I took advantage of then and still follow. TFS!

    We did the same. Small house enough room for the four of us. I cook 99% of our meals and we don't use credit cards! We don't buy new furniture because we had it for 15 years already. They are all in good shape and if I want to change I will probably paint my dining room furniture with chalk paint, repurpose some fabric to make pillowcases for my throw pillows etc. We have the money to do extra things but we save it for emergencies and we do free things with our kids. It's about the time we spend with the kids not what they have or places to go. They love going places with us.

    Some of the things we do are- a gift closet especially when kids were young and went to birthday parties, turn off lights, conserve water, do less laundry ( we struggle with this as two teens think their clothes are dirty after having worn them for 15 minutes. I recycle jeans 2 or 3 times, refill hand soap dispensers, save napkins when you grab that burger, take your own drinks when going out, we refill a water bottle, make soup once a week, use what you have !!!

    I stopped working outside the home when i had my first daughter. Then i started watching friends kids while they were at work to make some extra money. Now i am registered with the state for home daycare and make double than what i made working outside the home! Lol there are ways to work at home and be with your kids. I definitely need to work on eating at home though more because that’s where most of our money goes!!

    You make so much sense. I am tied of hearing when I do shop "Is that credit?" And Afterpay!! My husband and I live on the family farm and luckily we did not believe in putting things on credit, because when the Government deregulated the dairy industry we would not have been able to pay our bills. I have basically worked all our married life for different reasons eg to feed and clothe us all, as my husbands wage went to the farm bills. I love how you say someone will have more than you and some less .Thanks for sharing.

    I know it can be a hard sell for kids, but maintaining ketosis (burning fats, not sugars) is a great savings on food costs. Burning sugars is like constantly throwing kindling on a fire, as opposed to adding one big log

Basically a one time payment that has lasted over a year for emergency calls and sporadic texts and data. We have internet phone through Ooma. We don’t feel deprived at all with internet at home. Such good advice. It also helps us be good stewards of what God has given to us. I will say that being able to purchase a less expensive home depends on where you live. I live in Los Angeles where the homes and even apartment rents are ridiculously high.

    • @OldWorldHome
      @OldWorldHome  6 років тому +1

      Yes I completely agree about housing, it is all relative to where you live. We're in NJ where the property taxes are high so a "less expensive, smaller home" for us could easily pay for a mansion in the mid west. You make the most of what you have :)
