Hey everyone, be sure to check the description box where I actually did the math and totaled up all these expenses! I hope this list serves as a jumping off point to get you thinking about areas where you could cut costs, we all do what’s best for our season and stage of life and personal preferences, these are just things we choose not to spend money on ❤️
Hey I did look your description box looks like I could save some money to I just need to stop buying juice In macaroni cheese and fabric softener the other thinks we do I think you do a really really good job♥️
I stopped buying paper towels years ago, I know they are convenient but once I had a strict budget they went. If you have plenty of old rags or towels on hand they can do the trick, and cloth napkins are also a big savings. You may have mentioned these and I missed them. Thank you for all of your wonderful vlogs!
I saw so many comments on owning a pet and what you are missing. My husband and I have had several dogs. We LOVE them so much and they do bring lots of joy and laughter. However, owning pets are just like everything else. It is not for everyone. Having children is not for everyone. Owning a house is not for everyone. Even owning a car is not for everyone. We are all different...thank goodness! Wouldn't this be a boring life if we were all alike! Loved your video.
Exactly Hillary!! Frugal is confused with cheep. Frugal is contentment, appreciation, patience, discipline & responsibility. Respecting your hard work. We do the same!! Smart money spent. Great to see a young smart family. God Bless you. Great advice that’s for every age.
@@OldWorldHome As I kept listening to the video, I also agreed with the perfume! I stopped wearing perfume because of breastfeeding and never added it back in. Becoming a mom changes lots of things! Take care. :)
@@ericagoehring1089 , and I’m really not keen on scented candles either. It can’t be good for you breathing in those chemicals. Real essential oils extracted from plants seem okay if you want to put a few drops in your home made cleaning product. Having the windows open for a few minutes and letting fresh air in does a good job of making a room smell good too.
Plus, you don't spend money on home remodeling, other than what's necessary. Some people these days seem to feel they need to keep "updating" their furniture, kitchens, homes when what they have is already beautiful. It's wasteful of their time, money, and the earth's resources. There's a difference between making a necessary repair vs one for vanity's sake. Your hone is beautiful and timeless.
I so agree, Ann. It's upsetting to watch some of the HGTV shows, when cupboards--typically original wood--are sledgehammered out to put in particle board ones, or granite countertops (we still have tile!) are not even good enough anymore, and they're destroyed as well for the latest thing. Sickening.
A lot of what you're saying is old school homemaking. As a much older person, I've never used anything other than bar soap. I dont even buy fancy bar soap because the newer soaps are so soft. And all those specialty cleaning products are so cumbersome and expensive. No to dryer sheets or all the other cleaning wipes. I see people clean their whole house with those disinfecting wipes that come in a plastic canister. I never understood that. If I need to do a big or whole house clean, i start the washer with hot water on the lowest level setting. I put a bit of fels naphtha flakes in there, a quarter cup of bleach, then toss all my clean "cleaning rags" in, wring them all out and put the hot wrung out, balled up rags in one side of a divided bucket. Turn the washer off leaving the soapy water in there. I go all over the house with my bucket, tossing each dirty rag in the other side of the divided bucket as I go. When I finish, I toss all the rags back into that same washer water (no use wasting it) and any other whites I've gathered up, turn it back on to fill and start. My mother cleaned this way and my grandmother cleaned this way.
I’m 60 years old and my husband and I have done exactly as you’ve described in your video. It has served us well in our 35 years of marriage. We wish more families could benefit from this mind set/lifestyle. Keep up the good work! You’ll be so thankful when retirement comes!
I wasn't a pet person until we got one. When we lost her I felt like my heart had been ripped out. You are right about the expense though her last year cost us over $10,000 dollar in vet fees and medicine. Committing to having a pet is something most families don't think enough about before getting one and they end up in shelters or are abandoned.
I'm sorry for your loss, being a pet owner myself I know how hard that must be. Our doggie is our child and would spend any amount of money needed to keep him healthy and well. They are are children some people may not see it that way but I do.🙏
So sorry for your loss but so happy you found the love of a pet. Might I suggest pet insurance if you get another one. It may seem expensive when they are young and healthy but just one unexpected visit to the vet can be extremely costly. If not insurance put money aside monthly in an account for unexpected vet bills etc. I have had insurance on my last 5 dogs and it has been a godsend. We don’t worry about cost if we have to go to the vet - our attention can solely focus on our loved one getting the attention they need and well.
Since having two girls I have often thought that every parent (mom?) should take a class in basic hair trimming - supplies to have, how to cut a nice straight line, ways to section hair. UA-cam videos are so helpful, but I think it's a life skill that is overlooked. :)
Yes. I am a licensed cosmetologist and I have always done all of my families hair at home. The only hair cut that is paid for is mine. It saves us tons of money. I have the license but, with cutting you can learn basic skills to do at home. I would still recommend getting professional coloring services though. I've seen alot of at home coloring go wrong. :/
Very sensible. I was married in 1974 so most of this list is the way I lived back then. Over the years I did get into buying antiques at flea markets and garage sales and decor items from stores. But when I realized that I was selling all the store decor items at garage sales I stopped buying it. Now our pared down retirement home has our favorite antiques and home made items. I just watched a video of a young woman giving her home tour and it was the most incredible amount of stuff from Hobby Lobby, Target etc. How many signs do you need in one room??? All of the stuff she has spent so much for will be out of style in a few years and she will have collected nothing of value. How have things gotten to the point where people need a sign above their bed saying always kiss me good night and the word EAT over their table?
Kudos Hilary! I “don’t buy” as many things you don’t but I’m working on it! You are giving me much to think about! Me: No cookbooks ✅ no magazines ✅ no season packets ✅ not much makeup ✅ wool dryer balls ✅ no frozen premade dinners ✅ don’t buy dvds anymore ✅ no microwave popcorn ✅ cutting husband’s hair now ✅ no gym membership ✅ no storage unit ✅ no pre-shredded cheese ✅ no trendy clothing ✅ no plastic straws ✅ no echo or Alexa ✅ no self help books ✅
I read somewhere that "storage units" are solely an American thing and it puzzles the rest of the world why we would pay to store stuff we don't need or use. The only time I ever had one was for a couple months, (maybe less) when I had my house on the market.
I'm in Canada and would never consider using a storage unit to store items (unless we were transitioning during a move) Our motto is if it doesn't fit our home then we don't keep it :)
I don’t get the storage unit thing either. If you have that much stuff that you can’t fit it into your house than you have too much stuff. I love watching Hilary because of her simplicity and style.
This was such an inspiring list thank you! I was surprised at the pushback you received about saying that you don’t have pets because of the expense. We have a dog and three cats and whom we adore and they bring much joy! However you are correct they are very expensive to maintain. Especially our dog as he has severe food allergies and must eat a special diet. I highly respect people who count the cost before obtaining a pet. If more people did this there would be less pets in shelters. One thing I would add to the list is ditching the hair dye. I decided to embrace my silver which has saved so much time and money. Another tip is cutting out UA-cam channels that cause you to want to spend. One thing I truly appreciate about your channel is I don’t leave it wanting to go out and buy things. Thank you for that.
Yes absolutely to not watching any content that leaves you feeling less than or in want, totally agree. We don’t have a pet simply because we don’t want one, the money savings is an added bonus. Embrace that silver! 💁♀️
@@OldWorldHome yes I did understand that about your family not wanting a pet-I just didn’t express myself well, lol. 🙃I appreciate and respect that aspect as well. 💕
I have no problem with other people's spending habits. I have some frugal habits and some extravagant habits. I do have charge cards from multiple stores, and I use them, but always pay them completely off each month. I always save a least 15% of my income each payday. I have lots of good jewelry, lots of expensive purses and lots of clothes. I have three pets and I wear expensive perfume. My theory is life is short, and as long as I am debt free and have substantial savings , I am guilt free in my spending habits.
I agree with you. I also love to save for travel. And enjoy sitting in a nice coffee shop during summer. ;) but I am still frugal with a lot things so I can actually enjoy life . 😊
Thank you!!! Finally a youtuber who doesn't buy the cheap dollar tree decor! :-) Love vintage thrift finds...No cable tv here either. You're Speaking my language! I only buy party supplies there and pitch it afterwards.
Great video! We bought a fixer upper 2.5 years ago and have only had to pay an electrician so far. An added bonus was he let my husband help so he could learn enough to complete the remaining projects. Such a blessing!
Excellent video and topic! Discipline is key. Kudos to you and your husband! People should follow your rules to avoid financial stress. My parents have the same mindset and they are living the retirement dream now. They were immigrants from the Philippines and came to Southern California in the 60s. They both had middle-class jobs. We lived in Los Angeles in a very modest little home. But they were very very frugal and we eventually moved to a typical suburban home in Orange County during 70s. My moms second job was a real estate agent and they continued living frugally - road trips as vacations , dinners out 1x/mos, bagged lunches for entire family, owned cars til they died (no leasing) etc . They continued to saved $$ which allowed them to purchase real estate (apartment complexes). They purchased land in the 80s to build a custom home for our family . It was a 5,000 sft home with pool and tennis court in an exclusive part of Orange County, CA. Keep in mind , they still had their middle class jobs while their new neighbors were surgeons, lawyers, etc. We lived there for 10 years, they put 2 kids through college, sold the house and downsized in 1996. Then they took well deserved trips all around the world, bought new cars, enjoying being empty nesters, while continuing to live a frugal , fiscally-wise life. They have sacrificed a lot , but their goal was to retire without worrying about $ . They are an example that it can be done. It takes discipline and shaking the mentality of “keeping up with the Joneses”.
For the most part I have the same rules you do. Everything that you talked about have been rules my family has lived with all of our life. We are over 60 now and empty nesters. You are very smart to live the way you do. To me it’s the best way to live! My question to you is this though. Do you have any hobbies that you love to do? Just something for you?? I love to watercolor. My husband does gun work and refinishing for his hobby. Both of us will buy things for our hobbies and occasionally splurge on them. We have found it makes us happy and gives us something to look forward to. I also like to have 2 or 3 handbags for the different seasons of the year. A really cute purse for the season can really make you look so much better! And just one more thing. I think you should splurge on an instant pot! It will change your life. They are pretty amazing. I bought one for my kitchen and then I loved it so much that I waited until Amazon prime day and bought one for my camper also. I got a good deal ~ it was $49. It’s one appliance I think everyone should own. You just don’t realize until after you get one and start using it. Thank you for a great video!
Do you know the boxes your groceries come in, say cereal box or pizza box or cracker box etc? You can cut those in half and boom paper plates and you can get at least 2 per box!...that you already bought.
Love this, Hilary! I'm with you on most of these things and love that we don't have to spend the money. We are big time pet people and have dogs, cats, and chickens, but that's because we love it and it brings us joy. I agree with another commenter that it would be so boring if we were all the same. Thank you for sharing.
I always felt bad about the pet thing. We currently have a dog & she will be turning 15 or 16 in the next few months. But after her passing? as much as I enjoy the idea of having a 4 legged friend/family member, it’s expensive. We buy her quality food and boy, even buying the largest bag of it (she’s a lab), it feels like “didn’t we just get her food?!” Whenever it’s time to buy her more (and yes, she gets only the recommended amount). Vet bills are SO expensive.... with all things considered, we will not be getting another dog (or pet). Great list. I would say we don’t do 40/50 of the things you listed. Always room for improvement and being opened minded to change! Thanks Hilary!
We do a lot of what you all do, when we were paying off our house we found so many ways to save money or do without. It is very liberating and makes you realize what you really “need.” I always enjoy these types of videos! Congrats on the 100K
I'm with you on the pet...we don't own one simply because I get nauseous from the smell of dogs but it's nice to save on the money with them. My poor son wants one so bad but we just can't. Maybe one day if it's small and doesn't smell (not sure if those exist) but he'll have to help pay for the food, grooming needs, and medical costs. I've found that cleaning your own house and mowing your own lawn saves thousands of dollars but I totally get why some people get them.
They most certainly do!! They are loving and faithful. Everything living will cost. It's like saying you won't have a "child" because it's expensive.. my dog is my child💙
@@leonorperez5439 Like I said we’re all different . What’s important to one person is not important to some else. But to me they are worth every penny we’ve ever spent on them. I’ll just have to be economical in other ways 😂
I watched a video about Aldi/ Trader Joe’s. In a nutshell. The Company is from Germany and called Aldi. Two brother started it and then they branched off. So one brother owns the Aldi chain in the US and the other owns Trader Joe’s
I believe it was because of a disagreement about selling cigarettes. Here in Belgium they have cigarettes at the checkout, and the groceries aren't great or very fresh. But Aldi in the US is owned by the other brother and is a very different store!
You say you don't buy pets to save money but what happened to the cats that you had at the old house? Did you not take them with you when you moved to the new house?
This is how I have lived all my life. I am from a family of eleven and my Mom was very frugal and she taught me many of these basic money saving ideas. I have been married 44 years and I always told my kids - when you go to buy something think do I want it or do I need it - most times it is something you thought you could’ve lived with out but you forget about it! Good life lessons Hilary!
Having a pet is expensive but worth it for us. We didn't buy our pets, we rescued them. I also buy planner stickers because they just make me smile and I use my planner as a scrapbook. Also love my instant pot.Everything else I agree on.
I agree with most of what you said. I'm in my 50s & stuff like that used to be considered basic common sense. The one thing I would say is to not be too quick to automatically say no to something bc it adds to the items in your life. In my case, most of the years our children were growing up my husband was working very long hours & depending on the job, traveling extensively for work. I was in an exhausting season of life, worn out, stretched thin & money was VERY tight. Stuff like a toaster oven, electric kettle, electric skillet, slow cooker, roaster oven, freezer for stock up & batch cooking, microwave, etc saved on energy costs over using the electric stove or oven, saved MY energy & were a huge help. These days we're a household of 5 adults, 1 child & most of the adults have mobility issues & chronic pain. Our Instant Pots (yes plural) electric kettle, microwave, freezer for stock up & batch cooking, roaster oven, etc get used constantly. They wouldn't be a good choice for everyone but for us, they've definitely paid for themselves many times over. I'm just saying to look at the reality of your life and count the cost bc it might actually be worth getting an item in the long run.
For the most part I do exactly the same. I chuckle at the drive through in the morning as I sip my coffee from home. I do most of the things you mentioned though so I can have extra spending money for my hobbies bead looming, sewing and knitting. And of course I have my life changing, could never ever live without pets. I don’t buy gifts or cards for family members and friends. They get a homemade gift and homemade card instead.
Even no brand comes from a brand name company. My husband use to work at aunt millies and you would be amazed how much of the bread went into wrappers with store names. I've seen the trucks that unload at aldi (name brand).
Long time quiet subbie here. 🙊🙈 This video is some REAL TALK. Although I feel a little attacked lol, it’s in a good way. Even though I see this in your vlogs constantly, it’s great to have you point to how intentional these lack of purchases are. It’s eye opening for me in my own life. Thank you for sharing.
I loved this. We do many of the same things. It is always fun to see how others save money because sometimes we just haven't thought of it! Thanks for such a fun video.
Hi Hilary, great video. Most of what you said that you don’t buy, I don’t buy them either. I’m in the senior season of my life, (70 yrs old) and sold my large ranch home and bought a small bungalow a few months back. I had to declutter, donate and give away so many things because experiences are more important to me now than things. So I am looking forward to traveling, visiting friends and family and going to do a lot of camping! 🏕⛺️🔥
I do love my bread machine, my instant pot and our sweet cat. During lockdown these things have been such a comfort. Lots of great suggestions here though. I am going to look into grocery delivery as I can see that might curtail a lot of impulse purchases.
I love your channel. You are a breath of fresh air. I get frustrated with the many channels that are buying so many products and the same decorating style. They buy so much junk. Thank you for sharing your ideas. You are feeding your family healthier by not buying those bad packaged foods that have bad ingredients in them. You are doing so much better for your family. I love your channel. I bought too much after my husband passed away fifteen years ago Now I have too much stuff. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and idea's. God bless you all. 🥰😇🙏🏻
I do almost everything you mentioned except maybe 4 of them and I don’t consider myself frugal. I just don’t see the benefit to those things. We got rid of cable early on and I have never missed it. I do have pets but that is just a personal choice. However, I do limit spending on them as well. I don’t do surgeries, special diets or grooming. My 3 cats cost me less than $60 a month. I am in the process of pairing down my home so I have less to manage and I must say it can be eye opening in terms of money wasted. We live in a smaller home and plan to downsize even more after my husband retires.
We don't purchase paper napkins or plates. Guests think we are going to far/fancy setting the table with them but we like dinners to be a special and frugal at the same time.
What a list; lots of good ways to save. I don't pay for cleaning services; I clean the house myself. Although I do have Christmas decorations, I don't buy decorations for Easter, St. Valentine's Day, or Hallowe'en--we colour eggs, carve pumpkins, and eat chocolate. Many thanks for a great video!
We are on the exact same page except we have Discovery+ instead of Netflix and do pay for my boys haircuts, however we did cut their hair when they were little like yours. We have saved a lot of money over the years by doing these same things. I sure hope we have taught my boys how to live this way too because it took me too long to figure this out in adulthood. We are trying to give them a better start in their financial life!
Lovely to hear your ideas most of which I agree with but the one thing I really don't understand is why Americans and Canadians don't dry their laundry outdoors whenever possible. So much cheaper and better for the planet. It's a joy to see a line of clean clothes blowing in the wind. I heard a Canadisn woman say it was because people would think she couldn't afford a dryer!!!!!
I totally agree that line drying is a beautiful thing not to mention the sun is a natural disinfectant. I used to line dry my clothes when I was younger & living home with my parents and grandparents. We had a dryer but we only were allowed to use it in the winter or rainy days and even then I remember hanging clothes in our basement near the furnace to save money on energy bills. I can see why here in the U.S. and Canada some might feel embarrassed about line drying because some communities that have Associations have rules about doing that. I thank God I live where I can do what I want. Come spring & summer I am going to "make clothes line drying great again" LOL
Great video Hillary. How do you get your Bona premium spray cleanser? Do you substitute it with the vinegar and dawn mixture or found a dupe one? I am also trying to cut back and save save save but my hardwood floors benefit from the bona spray mop premium liquid (a bit expensive) I was just wondering if you use an alternative.
Nope I do use Bona, for me it’s worth the cost as I haven’t found something that works better. It’s one of those items that I don’t mind spending a bit more on every couple months
Good Morning Hilary 🌻 Guilty on 2 counts, Target dollar spot and Dollar Tree 😂 On the upside , I dont buy coffee out anymore since I bought a hand held milk frother I'm loving 🌼 Thanks for the tips ! You are an inspiration 💐
Hello Hillary, very good video ! new subscriber from France ;), one thing more i don't buy is green plants anymore, i bought very little ones a long time ago , cheap ones ,and made them grow, like succulents, and try to repliqued them, cutting them, so i have plenty of them now in my home and that 's nice ;)
Instapoot and Airfryer were both bought as Christmas gifts for me by my Mother in Law in the past 3-4 years and never taken out of the box, I am going to regift the Instapot to my recently married daughter for Christmas this year and the Airfryer is going to be a wedding gift for a couple at our Church. And I am so glad to hear someone else say they do not understand the Amazon devices and their makeup fits in one small bag.
So many of the things you mentioned are the very things our family don't buy. We've never paid for cable in 18 years of marriage, we don't even pay for netflix or any streaming service either. I don't like polyester. It makes me stink. I also have only one small makeup bag and only buy as I run out. As far as kid electronics, our kids are older (ages 15, 13, and 10) but we have handed down old phones to our kids to use as mp3 players. It has still worked for us. We will be getting our oldest daughter a phone fairly soon but I am so thankful we have held off for so long. Even when we do get her a phone, we will continue with our rule of keeping the internet out of bedrooms.
I used to buy more purses in varying sizes, shapes, colors, etc. Now I have 2 crossbody bags and 2 tote bags. Each type I have in tan (spring & summer) and black (fall & winter). I do also have a work bag, but it's reversible (tan & black) so it's easy to flip for the season. I've had these for the last 3 years, and I'm completely content. Plus, changing between the two color options makes it feel "new".
You both are fortunate! MANY of us do not have a husband who can repair our cars and remodel our house. Some men don’t have that interest or capability.
Hillary, I "found" you hrough the January Collab with the Minimal Mom. I have watched through a few of your videos, and I find it so bizarre that almost everything that comes out of your mouth I've thought or said on occassion. In this video there were many things I also do without. I haven't worn perfume since nursing my children, I have 1 necklace 😂 that I love, and next to no purses. The list goes on. Thanks for your inspirational videos; I find you very easy to listen to. You also remind me of my sweet roommate Rachelle from Bible School days.
It is a blessing, and the great thing is that my husband is able to help so many that he’s not married to 😉 So maybe seek out someone in your community, family, or church who can lend you their husband’s skills and the money can go directly to them rather than a bigger business with overhead 💛
Oh girl! Get an instapot! It takes the place of a crockpot and it cooks like a dream! Otherwise, great tips!! I feel very inspired. I can’t live without my dog. She is a blessing.
Your tips, so very appropriate for our current world situation, as well as when things are going well! I've taught younger people how to even make their own "maple syrup" from sugar, maple flavoring, and water, a trick from my mother, who grew up during the depression. So many good tips! Thank you!
I was talking with a cable salesman (pre-covid) and after telling him that we have no TV and no gaming systems, he said, “So you want your kids to live like they did 50 years ago?” Pretty much! We have a trampoline, Duplo, Lego, and lots of books/audiobooks. I don’t lead my kids through craft projects or plan their days (outside of homeschool). They have jobs as mother’s helpers, dog walkers, and garden waterers. It’s not perfect but it’s simple. We know 90% of our neighbors and that’s what we’re going for!
We don't have the traditional insurance. We have looked into it and we just can't afford any of the options available. We have a ministry sharing system through Samaritan Ministries. I loved it because the money is pooled by members and given to anyone who is a health need. To supplement that, we also got Aflac. I pay less than traditional insurance and that has saved us money.
I have always been blessed to have employer health insurance and now Medicare, but my self employed son-in-law doesn’t have it. Thank God they are healthy. I have encouraged them to look into a Christian self funded health plan like yours. I am a believer in this option ❤️👍🏻
@@phyllisanngodfrey6137 i am self-employed too! It is a great alternative. My husband had to have appendectomy the first year we joined and not only were we able to fully pay for the hospital bills and medication, the members also sent us get-well soon cards and prayers. No traditional insurance would do that.
I agree and don’t spend on so many of these things! So much of it comes down to things that can be reused over and over versus having to rePURCHASE over and over! Dryer balls, cloth napkins, washable mop pads, stainless straws, etc. As always, thanks for sharing!
Love this! My favorite is "no self help books, use the Bible" - Yes!! Lots of great ideas. I have too many things and the more I simplify, the better it feels. I love the idea of having only 1 purse as I know I have too many, limited jewelry, etc. I also love the idea of more quality clothes/shoes and less of them!! I also love your hair! :)
I read a lot (like 50-100 books a year) but use the library to get most of my books (and especially e-or audio books this last year) from the libraries in the network. I could easily spend a couple thousand a year if I bought the books I read new. If I decide to buy a book, I get it used or second hand. And we have made our lifestyle accommodate having 1 or less cars for the last 15 years or so. It takes a big mental shift but I honestly hope we never have to own a second car. I do have an electric pressure cooker because it is so useful to the way i cook (I make yogurt, beans, stocks, and grains regularly and use it for sauces and braises, it saves a lot of time and keeps my kitchen from overheating in warmer months) but it is smart to be selective about the kitchen appliances you buy! I buy very few convenience foods, in part because what I make is so much better than what I can buy - I cant remember the last time I bought mayo or salad dressing!
We have 5 boys and my husband always cut their hair. My husband cuts his own hair. Our kids are grown up. We also have 4 girls. I love your channel, Hilary! ❤️
I make my own laundry soap. Works well and saves a ton of money. I use Norwex cleaning cloths that just use water to clean and disinfect. Best thing ever for washing windows.
We don’t pay for a babysitter. Most of the time we babysit trade with our friends. They go out one time and we babysit and then we switch. I guess it counts as pay b/c your working....but we make it a fun time for all the kids to have a get together with their friends. It’s a win win!
I used to get sucked into the dollar store and walk out with $20 to $40 of who knows what. Now I purchase cards (I do enjoy mailing cards) if I haven’t received free cards in the mail that cover the event and tissue paper there. I’ve also reduced the amount of tissue paper I used for gift bags to one sheet fluffed out of the top. I reuse gift bags but if I ever end up needing one, I’ll get it from the dollar store. Otherwise, I’ve learned to stay out of that store.
I love these tips! So many that I hadn’t thought of! Always good to keep coming back to this topic to see what you can change. Totally agree on the seasons of life idea. When I was a stay at home mom, I was so much more intentionally frugal. I enjoyed it and had time for it. Now I am a full time pediatric therapist who drives to my clients so I find there are things I compromise on simply to save time. Like frozen meals 🤩
Loved this - so many great tips. The best part is that most if not all of these tips are ones that not only have the benefit of saving money but also saving space and saving the planet as well. My youngest daughter (16) has become extremely passionate about reducing our carbon footprint so we are slowly transitioning things in our household. Definitely a challenge but every little step counts and it feels good to be more intentional about our purchases. I am curious where you got your dryer balls from? Was it Amazon? We are in Canada so not sure if we would have access to the same brand. Do you use essential oils with them to make your clothes smell nice? I have heard of people doing that. Also I think you’ve talked about not buying paper towels. We are trying to transition away from buying them - or at least only keeping one or two rolls around for emergencies. Thanks again for the video. Have a lovely day 😊.
I actually found mine at Walmart on an end cap a few years ago, but no I don’t scent them, great idea though! Yes we typically don’t buy paper towels but we do buy paper napkins for those times when you want to clean something and just toss it or all of our fabric napkins are in the wash 💛
Amazon.ca has dryer balls for those of us in Canada....prices range from $10-20 for a set. My daughter (15) has also persuaded us to look at our carbon footprint...we now only use cloth napkins that I made from her old juvenile bed sheets. I am currently sewing some cloth paper towels to use in our kitchen, again from some old flannel sheets. We got rid of ziplock bags by using silicone bags. Little by little, we are trying to reduce our use of single use items.
I am with you on all 50 things, but with a couple of twists. When my children were little, I used cloth diapers, and no wipes. I used a washcloth. I also line dry laundry. ( and we lived in a shore town in NJ 😉) I use white vinegar fir fabric softener and for cleaning. One VERY important thing I have done over the years...I do not, and never have, purchased a new car. I have bought "newer" cars, or dealer demo cars...but nothing brand new. That ALONE has save me THOUSANDS. 😁 As always...great video!!!
Love all your tips. Unfortunately our society is so wasteful. I never liked trendy things. Classic clothing is the way to go. I like what I like and I don’t care if it is “in” or not. Shredded cheese has such a weird taste because they add something so it doesn’t clump up. Only bought it once, never again. Shredding cheese is so simple with a microplane grater. We buy only used cars that are a few years old. Great value. I live on Long Island,NY and unfortunately we don’t have Aldi. I wish we did.
I am in Suffolk county, there are 2 Aldi stores. I guess if you are in Nassau county. Call the company and see what's closest to you. Just a suggestion.
I love seeing how the basement den is coming along. I notice your rug and pillows on the couch....It's coming together nicely! I tend to decorate slowly as you also seem to do. You have wonderful money saving tips, by the way!
Brilliant video. I thought there was a lot I didn't buy but there were plenty of ideas that I hadn't even thought of. I'm going to watch it again and take notes!
I agree especially on perfumes. I considered perfume and a lot of cosmetics as a strong chemical while pregnant and avoided most of it to put on my skin. I didn't want it to go to my system through my skin. I just had the basic routine🌷 Greetings 🌷
Just found you and love you! You are one smart cookie! I make my own laundry soap and love it. It is also much more gentle on your washing machine. Don’t purchase fabric softener- just l cup white vinegar.
I am going to do my best to eliminate a few of these items from our list. Some of the items you mentioned I would never even consider spending money on, like lawn maintenance or a storage unit. My husband cuts our grass, I "garden" (haha, I really don't have a green thumb but I try), and we shovel our driveway in the winter. As far as the storage unit, if it doesn't fit our current home then it goes. One thing we do (and I'm not even sure if it could be considered but) we are happy with our current home and 99% it is our forever home. Is it the biggest, newest home? No, but it suits our lifestyle perfectly and sadly kids grow and one day it will actually have too much empty space. So when everyone else is buying those big, 3000 plus sqft homes, we are happy and content with ours, which I guess saves in the mortgage department. Thanks for sharing Hilary
That’s a great tip Jen, one we go back and forth on all the time. Being content with what you currently have absolutely saves money, plus it opens up the budget to do more together as a family 💛
Great list - very good advice. The one item I have to disagree on are pets. I would never ever look at them as a financial burden. is there cost involved? Of course but the pleasure far outweighs the expense and the benefit, especially for children far outweighs the cost.
And people who are already struggling at the moment to pay for food or utilities should put off getting a pet as it is an added expense they could do without until they can afford it.
I find that we don't buy things unless we need them. I also don't get my nails done unless it is for a special event, typically only a few times a year. If you can stop buying brand name items it helps a lot, that is a great point. Since I don't wear much makeup daily what I do have lasts months or even a year, which is great :D
I used to waste so much money at dollar tree. I’d spend $25-$30 on stuff that lasted one or 2 seasons until I realized if I spent half that on something with way better quality (and usually much cuter) in the end it was cheaper. Or repurposing things I’ve gotten from thrift stores. I hate to think how much I’ve wasted $1 at a time! 🤦🏼♀️
Hilary you are a girl after my own heart! Some things to add: I have silicone reusable bags for food stuffs etc instead of plastic single use bags, I have silicone stretch tops for use on top of bowls etc for food containers instead of plastic wrap and excess Tupperware type containers, I use an Eco egg for laundry. It works great for 98% of loads, is simple to use. I am a pet person. I have had animals all my life. They bring me such joy. Yet good for you for recognizing they aren’t for your family. There are plenty of ways to save on pets but one of the best is having pet insurance. That or a sinking fund for possible emergencies and regular check ups etc. Also spend a little more on quality food and make your own treats for a healthy pet. Love to read others suggestions! Oh and I am exactly like you when it comes to clothing.
Great additions! We certainly enjoy being around friends and family’s pets but just don’t have any desire to own one, great tips for saving on those costs 🐶
Paper towels was something I always considered a “luxury”. Now that we’re older and have a little more wiggle room financially, I do buy paper towels. (Nice thick ones too! 😂) All great tips! Thank you for sharing. 😊🌸
Just wanted to say I’m loving the shorter hair cut more and more! We use cloth napkins so we don’t buy paper towels.I cook from scratch too so I make a lot of things quickly myself ie buttermilk, cream, breads and so on. Great video!
This was soooooo REFRESHING!!!! Honestly, I am so over repetitive Home Goods/Hobby Lobby hauls and UA-camrs constantly redecorating just film content. It has become extremely unrelatable to me. If you (or anyone) could recommend other UA-camrs with similar content & values I would really appreciate it!!
Checkout Natalie Bennett. It was through watching Natalie's collaboration with like-minded women that I found Old World Home. These 2 gals inspired me to Spring clean my kitchen and reorganize. It's so much easier to find things when one simplifies!
I agree, Geri. All of it is done to promote their content--and everything they buy is a business expense, unlike for the rest of us. I'd much rather watch people like Hillary who will buy secondhand and donate at the same time.
I would recommend Farmhouse on Boone - I have only watched her for a short while but I think she cooks everything from scratch, decorates with antiques or truly homemade items, and her channel is so calm and soothing
I agree about Dollar Tree. I don't know how Catherine can get nice things from there but when I go there I always come out empty-handed. Ever since I found my love for classic decor and thrifting, I go to DT and go "nah.. not today." 😅😄
Great tips! Thanks Hillary. It took me years to find this stuff out on my own. You are a wise one. We are very similar here. I am curious though, what do you do for fun? Hobbies? Make sure to work that in so you dont grow bored or resentful....but if your like me, I know a lot of your joy comes from beautifying your home. I am financially successful and I still would rather spend my money at the Goodwill because I love the thrill of the hunt and the uniqueness and quality.
I also love the thrill of the hunt! Thrifting is definitely a hobby but one I have to be careful not to overspend on items we won’t use. I also love to read, do house projects, spend time with family and friends, make UA-cam videos ☺️
Amen! 💛
Indeed!
Exactly, it's their choice!
Why do people have to be so judgemental?
SO TRUE!
My mom used to say the same thing “what a bring world it would be if we were all the same “ I love it when I hear people say that 😁
As a 65yo homemaker, I applaud your ideas. Have lived the same way most of my life. So many people worship excess. Kudos to you and your husband!
This is great, Hillary. I am with you on almost every single one! But God-willing, I will always have pets! They bring such joy to our life. :)
That’s wonderful! 🐶🐱🐰
I can’t live without an animal ❤️
So smart!! I'm doing it this from now on!
Oh my goodness, that is a great tip. This younger homemaker thanks you for sharing and teaching me something new ❤️
I’m 60 years old and my husband and I have done exactly as you’ve described in your video.
I adore your tips. You are such a breath of fresh air in a society that loves to overspend on nonsensical items!
Sounds a little defensive. To each their own & you shouldn't have to defend it.
Absolutely!!
I typically do not buy paper plates. We always use our dishes for everyday meals. A picnic is the only time I would purchase them.
Your list was so thought out. Most lists I hear I already don’t buy . Yours had some I hadn’t thought of. Thank you 😊 So practical.
Thank you for sharing. I am doing some of these. Trying to be very conscious of what I buy.
I think you should teach a class especially to young people about saving money, you would be fantastic❣Blessings❤
I agree with this.
Off topic. Your hair length and slightly layered cut is perfect. It's so becoming on you, whether you have it curled or not.
Ah thanks so much 💛
I agree with so many things you talked about! The one exception is pets! They bring so much joy to my life! Just shows we’re all different ♥️
They’re worth every penny :)
@@vickienelson2525 same here I'll have to be frugal with other things but not my pet👌😁🤣
Yes I so agree, if those things add value to your life or save you time they’re absolutely worth keeping! ❤️
You are so delightful! Your wisdom is so refreshing. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Jennifer! Oh no I didn’t mean any attack whatsoever, just simply sharing the choices we make ❤️
I loved this.
That’s great that you love and use them 💛 Delivery is a lifesaver for this season of life for us
I love your channel.
I wish more young couples would think like you. It works when both are on the same page. Have a blessed weekend. 🙂
Love that ✨
What a list; lots of good ways to save. I don't pay for cleaning services; I clean the house myself. Although I do have Christmas decorations, I don't buy decorations for Easter, St. Valentine's Day, or Hallowe'en--we colour eggs, carve pumpkins, and eat chocolate. Many thanks for a great video!
So proud of you and your logical, frugal cooking and shopping habits. You are a role model for families young and old.
I like your game plan! All very smart!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Hilary! Great ideas. My husband and I try to do the same. He is handy and does all of our car maintenance and home improvements/ and repairs too.🤗
You both are fortunate!
Marlene it’s so nice to “meet” you, sounds like we’re a lot alike! 💛
Thank you!
Great idea, I bet you could do the same with other flavorings....❤️❤️❤️
That’s a great one!
Yes absolutely!! Seasons of life, financially changes, schedule changes... we all adapt and make choices that work best!! ❤️
@@OldWorldHome Thank you. They are wool dryer balls correct?
Amazon.ca has dryer balls for those of us in Canada....prices range from $10-20 for a set. My daughter (15) has also persuaded us to look at our carbon footprint...we now only use cloth napkins that I made from her old juvenile bed sheets. I am currently sewing some cloth paper towels to use in our kitchen, again from some old flannel sheets. We got rid of ziplock bags by using silicone bags. Little by little, we are trying to reduce our use of single use items.
@@Happy_life117 Thanks for the tip. Amazing what our kids teach US! Have a great day 😊.
As always...great video!!!
Cars is a huge one! 💛
Great video! I love Aldi too. Their products are so good. Thanks for these tips!
I just had the basic routine🌷
Greetings 🌷
Hilary, I just love you and your channel! You give such good advice. I’ve been a strong fan of simple living for years. Here’s to living simply! 🥰
Totally, I didn’t mean to frame them as a burden, I know they bring a lot of joy to many! They’re simply not something we choose to have 💛
And people who are already struggling at the moment to pay for food or utilities should put off getting a pet as it is an added expense they could do without until they can afford it.
Hilary an air fryer and instant pot are game changers. I honestly would not want to live without. Lol. I get you though.
I have been watching you for years and always been jealous of your ALDI purchases and we finally have one and i love it SO. MUCH!!
Yayyyy!!! 🛒✨
I dont buy anything at starbucks. We also dont buy electronics for our kids. They wont miss what they never had!
WOW! Great tips, however when you are a full time working Mom working outside the home some items are just practical and keep us sane.
Absolutely, paying for convenience is completely worth it some times! It’s all about seasons and stages of life and balancing priorities. Much love 💛
Any link to where to the wool dryer balls?
I found mine at Walmart but I’m sure most big box stores carry them or amazon 💛
Love your way, how you set an example of simple living.
Yes, very true
Great job Hilary. Our grandson is saving for a home, Randy is 25. Brandon is 29 both of our grandkids are doing good we are proud of them.
Yes seasons change for sure! Enjoy those paper towels 🙌🏼
We use paper towels mainly to wipe out a greasy pan before washing,I feel like I waste less soap and water😅🤣😂
Great content! The majority of your list, I don't do either! Marketing and consumer society propels so many of these items on this list.
You are so disciplined. Good for you, I definitely need to work on that.
Wow! You’ve given lots of great content that you shared. Thank you Hilary.
Hillary! Great series. It is so interesting to me to watch your daily life and budget tips!
