We have lived in this small home for 30 years. When I was in my 40’s I was a little envious of my friends with their beautiful large homes. Now in my 60’s this home is the perfect size for empty nesters and paid for too!
I am in my early 40's and completely feel the way you did! We are a family of five with three kiddos under the age of 7 and I just try to keep only the necessities in our home so it doesn't feel cluttered. Every time I tell my hubby we need a bigger home he assures me how this home is perfect for us and it's going to be perfect as empty nesters!! Nice to read your comment ;)
We have lived in all sizes of homes, so I can tell you that bigger is not always better! I love your classic style. It is refreshing to see a great example of a home that was cultivated slowly as opposed to the renovations that we are used to seeing on social media that are styled to reflect the current trend and are often void of really personality. Your tips are wonderful for any sized home - thank you for sharing them with us!
We live in a large home now, but many years ago, when we had very little money, we converted a large carport into a little home. It was connected to my in-laws farm house. We sourced every item for it second hand, including furniture, and my husband built everything. We had a small bedroom that we shared with our newborn daughter, a small, but very efficient kitchen, and a small living area. We shared a bathroom with the main house. I used to call it my 'little house on the prairie' home, and I can't tell you how happy we were living there, and being debt free too. Btw, I just love your home, and never tire of looking at it. You have such wonderful and unique taste in home decor : )
I live in a small space and the word that everyone’s says to describe my place is cozy!!!!! I wouldn’t trade it for all the square footage out there! Love your tips!!!💗
Great video.I came from a pretty large colonial home to a small 2 bedroom apartment.Being a empty Nestor now and loving it. Less is better. At first it was hard getting used to less space but, I also don’t need so much stuff. With a small space I try to keep it simple and so far it’s great.
Clean is free! And clean never goes out of style! I love my small home and your videos over the years have given me a fresh perspective on decorating and organizing it. So thank you and happy valentine’s day! ❤️
I live in a fairly large house... my first ever brand new home... when I first got it I was so excited to decorate... but one important thing I have learned is less is definitely more... less clutter, less cleaning... at least that is my style
Totally agree with all your points! We’ve lived in large homes and small homes over the years since we rehabbed as a side job. Read a book years ago “Keeping Life Simple” way before Marie Kondo became popular. Changed the way we looked at our possessions! Became obsessed with organization and not storing things we will never use. Definitely made our moves easier and setting up a home much quicker!
Hillary the tips you gave for a small home are so true, having a smaller home to me is cute, i am a older woman i her late 70's and really enjoy my small home thanks for sharing, you and Dan take care of one another and all of your precious children Prayers and Blessings!!!
I love your home! We live in a 3800sq ft home with our five kids and our home business (and homeschool...lots of together-ness lol). I'm having a very hard time getting a home this size to feel more cozy and less like a museum. I get overwhelmed by tiny knick knacks but the larger pieces of wall decorations or furniture end up feeling a bit "cold" to me. We are also renting so we can't make paint or light fixture changes, which would be so helpful. I can't wait to learn more from you! Your kitchen island is so gorgeous!
I am in a small condo and these are great tips for sprucing up our small space! Surprisingly I have a large back porch so I'm excited to see some inspo from you for the Spring/Summer. TFS!
Hi Hillary! I can agree so much on the ideas that you touched on. I had a large home but when the kids left we downsized. I was still decorating the way I did with the larger home and it all became too much! So, after sometime I realized it actually looked better with much less but more focal points/statement pieces for each area of a room. I am like you as far as church sales, yard sales etc I have found some real treasures that way. I think your home is adorable and tastefully done.
I live in a small modest brick home built in the late '50's. It is a work in progress and labor of love. It forces me to be more intentional about what I bring and keep in my home. I am enjoying the process of giving it more character and charm and keeping it timeless opposed to dated. 😊
For years I always thought I needed a larger house but in reality I need less stuff 😂 Learning to live a simple, clutter free life has magically made my house feel bigger 😂🤣 The more I get rid of the more I am loving my space. Thanks for the great tips Hilary 💕
We just bought our first home and I can't wait to get in there and start making it special! We are planning on opening up a wall and adding an island. I also have a window that could be framed by a beautiful "build in" with a bench in the middle. Great ideas, I need to go find me some chandeliers!
The biggest thing to keep in mind is, never make your house so "perfect" that guest feel they can"t come in and sit down! I've seen many homes on you tube that aren't friendly!
Sherry Bjerke I have one of those beautiful homes. It is a friendly home, and I welcome people to come in and sit. But what I don't do is allow people (especially children without proper home training) to destroy my things. I take very good care of my things, and I expect others too!
Thanks! I live in an apartment now! I'm really limited as to flooring and wall decor! But I do try my best to use the things I have to decorate my space!
We live in about 1500 sq. ft.,just my husband and I. We raised our 2 sons in about 1000 sq.ft. with a full basement. Smaller spaces do keep your family closer and it was so much easier to keep the home clean when the boys were little. We do like the extra space we have in our present home as our family is expanding with daughters- in- law and grandchildren!
I have crown molding on my someday list too. I love the way a beautiful thick molding looks. Only decorating with a few favorites has been so helpful to me in making my small home feel more spacious and beautiful to be in.
Something else that helps in smaller homes is to be intentional about the size/scale of furniture you buy. Modern, plush, over stuffed furniture takes up much more space than more traditional, tailored furniture. Fantastic tips as always, dear friend
Your tips in this video were spot on true and so eloquently expressed! Although my style is different from yours, I love how you make your home look with your style. It all looks so put together and cozy. I also love that you have a particular style that you enjoy and stick to. This makes your home look so unique instead of like every other home on youtube where everyone's house seems to look the same filled with the stuff from the store that everyone buys (I love that you mentioned that because that is exactly what I always think when I watch your videos). It's so refreshing to watch your videos because of that and to see someone living a life that is truly special to them and more genuine, realistic and down to earth. Thank you for this excellent video! Blessings!
My husband and I raised our two daughters in a very custom built home when they were young. We had over 7 1/2 ac. of land. Taxes were over 22,000 a year! Now that my girls have grown it is just my husband and I so we moved from NH to SC and we bought a new house 3 years ago and it is 1960 square feet with a very small lot. I love my house so much better, easy to clean and our taxes this year will be less than 1200. What a difference! We are now adding shiplap to our breakfast room to match the shiplap over our fireplace. All though we have 8 beautiful grandchildren I would love a bigger house when they come to visit. But being in my 60's I want less to clean.
Loved this video Hillary...I completely agree with you about architectural staples in your home. Also, about the large pieces in a small spaces. I have recently sold a lot of my smaller decor items, lightened up my space and only kept the things that bring me joy...hoping to get my Spring Home Tour up by Monday;)
I love these tips, and love your style! My house isn’t necessarily small, but it is an old house and isn’t the open concept these modern houses have, so it feels smaller. I plan to try out these tips. Thanks!
We’re a family of 4 living in a 800 square foot apartment outside Boston and loving it! Living small forces me to only keep what we use, need and love and even that can be too much!!!
Because of your work, we put in board & batten in our dining room. Just like yours, it was a big blank wall. So pleased with the result. Thinking of adding this to our bedroom but in squares... maybe. We downsized to a new townhome 2 years ago this May. One of the best decisions we have made.
Amen to cleaning and decluttering! We moved from a 3500 sq' Florida home with pool, to a 2500 sq' town home, to a 2300 sq' pre-retirement home, and we are seriously thinking of down sizing to 1500 sq'. This "large is better" mentality is an American phenomenon. Great video.
Our home was a spec home. Everything was very vanilla which gave us the opportunity to completely change it to our style. Adding chunky crown molding has been, by far, the most exciting change that we have made. It makes me smile every time I see it. Installing it was a true labor of love though!
My favorite home was a 450 square foot cottage we rented as newlyweds. It was so cozy and had everything we needed at the time. Now that our youngest is 16 we are planning on building and want to recreate that small cottage feel.
Your home is beautiful. You e inspired me over the years to minimise. I’m looking to move to another county and hoping my new home has space for an island. Everywhere I go I look for something I can make into an island like yours. Your color is beautiful. Your home is one someone can sit and truly take in and be inspired and feel at home. Congrats on your new baby.
You have such beautiful taste. Your home looks so classic and comfortable. The kitchen is my favorite. We have a 944 sq ft house for my family of 5, but we at least have a partially finished basement.
We live in a small house and it is t cluttered at all. It’s clean and simple and I love it. My taste is more eclectic. I don’t like matchy matchy things. I think your house should reflect the people that live in it. Thanks for sharing. You have a beautiful home. ❤️
We live in a rather large home with just my little Party of 3. I love our home, land, view, yet do look forward to the day we downsize. I have always tried to decorate our home so it is warm and inviting, yet we use so little of it. Anyway, your home is beautiful, and your tips are helpful for me as well. Thank you and Peace
Yes as a grandmother now and grown kids I have a small house. i have down sized my house and my stuff and it is easier to maintain. i have taken portraits of all 7 grandkids at age 5 before their teeth fall out. So my home pictures are of my family and i love them. i am talking 16x20 portraits. Not everyones style but it is my home and it makes me happy
I live in a small apt, moved from a 3 bedroom home, so it’s been very overwhelming. I ended up getting rid of most of my furniture because it just was way to big. But I’m slowly getting where it feels like a home. I have given away a lot and plan on giving away more. I’ve been using picnic baskets as side tables. One entire wall is my favorite things collage wall which contains many shadow boxes of my miniatures. But I’m rambling. Thank you for sharing your ideas. Totally agree with you
Hi Hilary, I live in a small house (950 sq ft) which is the perfect size for me. I have a 2 car garage with plenty of storage and a work bench. The best part about my home is the huge backyard and the many many mature trees, it really is like a park, very serene. I wouldn't say I am a minimalist but I'm not one to have a lot of knick knacks, if I have something on display its something that I love. I love your home and I'm trying to work up the nerve to either do built ins like you had in your other home or some kind of texture like ship lap on one focal wall in the living room. Just can't decide what to do...lol. Thanks for the inspiration you give.
I live in a small home and prefer it that way. I also believe that less items and special ones make your home feel special and full of love. I have never wanted a large home. I am like you in that I love a small, warm, love filled home that has just the items I cherish in it. Clutter only makes stress and not a good feeling. Clean and clutter free is best. I absolutely love your channel and all your tips. You have a beautiful home and excellent taste. I adore your family also. Thank you for sharing with us your home and family Hilary. Many Blessings.
We live in a 98 sq. ft. Casita travel trailer full time. Quite a challenge...but we love it. Having live plants is out of the question right now, but I am thankful for amazing artificial florals and plants.
My family and I live in a house that was built in the 40s. It’s just over 900 square feet with two bedrooms and one bathroom. There are times that I wish it was bigger, it really is the perfect size for our family of three.
I shared how I did it throughout a couple different videos, but the reveal was in my $5 goodwill challenge video for Christmas 2017 here on my channel ❤️
I absolutely love your home, it's just my style. Our home is 2000 square feet, and we've added elements to make it like an older home, which I love! Most of my furniture is antique as well. I guess my style would be considered vintage farmhouse.
We live in a 1200 square foot home and with three energetic growing boys it can feel small at times. I definitely struggle with wanting a bit more space, but honestly I don’t think we would use all the space in a big house. Living in a smaller space keeps us close as a family, helps us focus on the things that are really important, and is easier to keep clean and tidy. Thanks for your tips and sharing your home. It always inspires me!
We have a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1100 sq ft home for 5 people. I have never desired a big home, quite the opposite actually. My dad taught me like his mom taught him - it doesn’t matter if you live in a cardboard box as long as it’s clean. It’s way easier to clean up 1100 square feet of well used space than a lofty, massive house.
Hi Hillary - Great video! I live in a small home as well :). I was wondering where you purchased the smaller light fixture near your door to the garage? Thanks! Lily
That star shaped light fixture is so beautiful! Makes me think of Christmas, how fun.
We have lived in this small home for 30 years. When I was in my 40’s I was a little envious of my friends with their beautiful large homes. Now in my 60’s this home is the perfect size for empty nesters and paid for too!

Clean is free. Love that!
I loved your old house and your new one! Americans live in such excess. It's so refreshing to see a "normal" sized home!
We have lived in all sizes of homes, so I can tell you that bigger is not always better! I love your classic style. I love your calm personality and the joy you can here in your voice. It’s always a pleasure to watch your vlogs. Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️
Family of 5 in a small home here as well & we also love the classic heirloom pieces particularly in furniture.
We also have a small home and I really liked this advice! Over the years we hope to add some things to make it more unique and special like you have.
Your home is so warm and charming. Your video was really enjoyable to watch and I did find good ideas you shared. Thank you.

Love the new light fixture above the door. Great video. Happy Valentines!
I live in an old small home - and love it. Thanks for the tips, just in time as I am remodeling!
Your home is looking Lovely. Love the molding on the wall in the dining room and kitchen. Thank you for sharing.
I needed a new Hilary video! Adding the woodwork to the dining room really made it its own space in an open concept floor plan.

Great tips, Hilary!!
Such a beautiful home, not just a house.
Your home nice ,cozy
I love small homes yours is so nice 👍
I live in a small house thank you for the great tips. Your home is so beautiful you have such good taste x
I love how you style your home Hilary it's a beautiful old worldly home you have a great eye for interior design of a homely home.😍😄👍
My favorite home was a 450 square foot cottage we rented as newlyweds. It was so cozy and had everything we needed at the time. Now that our youngest is 16 we are planning on building and want to recreate that small cottage feel.
That's a fabulous way to think about our homes. ❤
Love your tips I have recently moved into a small cottage and your tips have really made me think of my space differently thank you xx
Your home is so beautiful ! Love what you've done.
You've got a real talent for beautifully transforming rooms. I know it's all subjective, but it seems very tasteful and 'beautiful' to me!
Thanks so much!
Excellent tips!
You have such beautiful taste. Your home looks so classic and comfortable. The kitchen is my favorite. We have a 944 sq ft house for my family of 5, but we at least have a partially finished basement.
Thanks for all the tips. Your home is beautiful
That little chandelier is amazing
I just love your home, it’s a real cozy 🏠
We live in a small home. Love your tips.
I could not agree more with this video! 💜
What a great video!!!😊 Thanks for sharing.
Wow . Thank you .
We live in a small house and it is t cluttered at all. It’s clean and simple and I love it. My taste is more eclectic. I don’t like matchy matchy things. I think your house should reflect the people that live in it. Thanks for sharing. You have a beautiful home. ❤️

I have always been a fan of your decor style even though we live continents apart so thank you so much for your tips.
I’d love to see it if you do!
Such good advice 👍🏻.
Thank you so much for the great tips 🙏🏾
We live in a small apartment but everything here is curated and special mostly because a lot of things were given by family and friends.
Hi! Love your video! Do you have one on how you added the architecture to the dinning room? Thanks!:)
I shared how I did it throughout a couple different videos, but the reveal was in my $5 goodwill challenge video for Christmas 2017 here on my channel ❤️
Great tips! Thank you!
I absolutely love your home, it's just my style. Our home is 2000 square feet, and we've added elements to make it like an older home, which I love! Most of my furniture is antique as well. I guess my style would be considered vintage farmhouse.
Where we find the light fixtures in ur kitchen?
The hardware on your kitchen island is divine! And that brass light with the cone cage -WoW! Where did you get those?
The brass light came with the house, I love it too!
Where’d you get your entry way light fixture?! I love it!!!

Beautiful home!
4 kids in a 3 bedroom house at one point down to 3 as my 20 year old has moved out. Thankful for my basement!
Love these ideas that you talked about ❤️
We have a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1100 sq ft home for 5 people.
Thanks! Lily
