A Finnair flight cancellation threatened to end any hopes of a weekend in New York City - until the power of the OneWorld alliance got me there in time for a wonderful couple of days! How were BA in economy? Find out here! Includes a beautiful shadow-landing into JFK!

Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on UA-cam. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do my best to respond to every single one. I’d also love to hear any recommendations you may have for future content, or why not challenge me to try something a little out of the ordinary! If you are looking to collaborate on any type of project, I’d love to hear from you - email me your ideas and hopefully we can work together in the future.

The very first flight I ever took was on a BA 747 from Heathrow to San Francisco in 1991. Little did I know this was going to be my last flight on the queen of the skies. What a sad thought! But also, I am so pleased I had the opportunity after my Finnair cancellation! What was your first ever flight? Does it still have a special place in your heart?
My first flight was in 1965 when we emigrated to 🇦🇺. The plane was a Vickers Viscount 4 engine turboprop. We stopped for refuelling at Bahrain, Colombo (where they also did some maintenance work on one of the engines), Singapore, Darwin and finally our destination Melbourne. For an 18 year old from Guildford who had never travelled before, this was a massive adventure.
My first flight was Gatwick to Athens on a DanAir flight in August 1973. Before we flew home the PLO used machine guns and grenades at the airport, killing 3 and wounding 35 passengers. The destruction at the terminal was evident on our return journey, which made for a scary flight home for this 13 year old. 🥴
The jumbo will also be a fond memory, having flown it many times to all corners of the world. Best memory are the long journeys on Air New Zealand stopping en route at LA. 👏👏👍😎
The best shadow landing, ever! 👏👏👍😎
Hi Steve very interesting flight from Scotland to America via Heathrow 😮
I’ve only ever flown on a 747 once and that was back in 2009 when I flew from Heathrow to JFK. On the other long hauls I’ve done over to the US and Canada it’s been in other aircraft with different airlines (whoever was the cheapest at the time!) Little did I know back then, that would be my only 747 flight. Never had any problem with BA and always feel well looked after by them. Really enjoy watching your videos and have recently discovered them. Keep them coming!
That's the best shadow I've ever seen by a long shot! Very impressive. Hell of shot, fair play you;
I too love and miss the 747, I got one on the same route in 2016 but you had much better weather than I got
Thank you, Steve.
BA has always been a wonderful airline. Though SIA was a part of my life for many years I still have the warmest respect for BA.....the "Cunard Line" of the skies.
nice trip report! The food was excellent, and you had a nice wing view
Trip Report cheers, I was SO relieved to be on this flight, I honestly didn’t think I’d be getting to NYC that day! Thanks for watching!
B747 Queen of the Skies! When you see the RR stencil on the engine, you know your in good hands.
So true Frank!
Lovely Video Steve 😊😊😊
Great video as always, Steve. Let us know when you're back over in NYC, would love to grab a pint
I was VERY lucky to receive an upgrade to business class on a 747 back from Vancouver some years back. Excellent service as you say. I had a brilliant sleep and woke up by a bacon roll!
Very lucky indeed! And that's a 10hr + flight? Amazing!
Found Ur videos recently and am enjoying what I have been missing. New York one brings back memories but I think San Francisco one would be right up your street.
I spent few days there last year. So much to see, cable cars (partly down for maintenance that weekend☹️☹️☹️), vintage streetcars, and great metro system. Also great walking with stunning views also the sealions at pier 39 and the hills.
Cheaper, just, than NY too.
Regards.
Glad you've found the channel, welcome aboard! Ohhh totally agree, San Francisco is my favourite city, been there so many times but in the days before my UA-cam channel, long overdue a return there! Thanks for watching :)
That IFE was actually installed last year when the aircraft was refurbished and is Panasonic’s current generation ex3 system. 😆
Tom Payne oh wow! It doesn’t feel very last year!!!! Cheers for the info :)
That shadow sequence was superb. Keep the great content coming.
red88ant88 thanks so much! I’m working on my next video right now :)
Excellent thank you...747 very special 🤗
I miss them already!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have been to New York many times and every time I find something new to explore. Next time I will visit the USS Intrepid like you did as sadly I have not done that yet!
A worthy trip when you're there next :)
Great video Steve! Saw some of your other videos as well and their really good as well.
Baby Rhino very kind thank you! Comments like this make it all worthwhile :)
Your Welcome. I saw your video of the ferry to shetland from Aberdeen, I used to live in the shetland islands with my family many years ago and use to get the ferry to shetland from Aberdeen and it was wonderful but i didnt like travelling on it when it was really windy.
@@babyrhino3266 I thought it would be quite fun in stormy weather but how wrong was I! It's so beautiful up there - a different world!
Nice work, always pleased to see BHX in any video and overall really enjoyed your style and editing. Keep it up! (The BA safety video never gets old for me)
Blake Edgington - Airborne amazing! Thanks for the support! You’ve made my day 😊👍🏼
That 747 is the very one I travelled on to NYC back in 2019. Was amazing, was suppose to be flying business class on a 747 back from NYC in April 2020 as part of my honeymoon but it all got cancelled. Still glad I got to fly on one before they got removed from service. Great content btw. Keep up the good work ✈️💪🏼🏴
Cheers Ross, I was delighted to get the unexpected chance to fly the 747, but who knew it would be for the last time on BA at least :(
I was fortunate to have three flights on BA's queen of the skies over the years, including my first time in First class and recorded on my channel. I'll regret that I never got to do Club World upstairs, but I need to find a way to get in the bubble on one of the remaining Jumbos while they are still around. Glad you got to take an un-knowing farewell flight to the BA 747.
Cheers! I’m gonna check out your First video now...
Ahoy matey! .) Another great aviation vlog, aye! :D Be careful with feeding the beast here! XD Must have had been a pretty cool flight and trip in NYC! Keep going! Captain of the good old Blackthorne (soon be back on the sea for a short period)
I miss the 747 already!!! :(
Great videos mate love watching all of them. Let's hope we get more of these videos to watch once this current crisis is over.
Seeing this video 2 years after the fact, but you have a lot for me to catch up on! To be honest, I've never been a great fan of the 747, although I don't dislike it. Just preferred the DC-10 (at least until United, along with everybody else, changed from 2-4-2 seating to 2-5-2). Later on, favorites became 767 and then 777; haven't flown a 787, yet. Not a great fan of Airbus, although their seats in the narrow bodies tend to be 1" wider than the corresponding Boeings.
My first flight? I think it was a United 720 from SFO to ORD, in 1967. Two memorable things about it: (1) we, a family of four, were seated in the coach lounge, which had five seats at a table, and (2) we took off on runway 10, which at SFO is a bad-weather runway. Most takeoffs were and are on 1 or 28, landings on 28. Anyway, those lounges (a corresponding one in first class had four seats) didn't last many more years, but they were always great for the family.
Haha good luck catching up :) and thanks for watching the back catalogue :) Hey your first flight departed from the destination of my first ever flight back in 1990 - SFO! Ahhh loved that city ever since. And yup, that was on anther BA 747 :)
You don’t have to take the transit train to the B and C gates at Terminal 5. There is a walkway that runs underneath. It has been virtually deserted the couple of times I’ve used it and is a great chance to stretch the legs before a long flight. Probably not so good if you’ve got a tight connection at the C gates though, it’s a good ten minute walk!
egpx aww I wish I’d known, would have loved to have tried it, even with the right connection! Thanks for the info :) and also a great tip about stretching the legs! And cheers for watching :)
Loved Windsor Castle from the Air!
Ann McDermott it’s cool eh? So many Heathrow arrivals/departures pass right over it, so be sure to keep an eye out for it if ever passing through LHR :)
Enjoyed this video, until family came , l was pleased
BA used to be so well thought of and once the creme de la creme of airlines. I knew a BA stewardess back in the 1980s who told of the very strict application process but how it was like the best thing in the world once a person was accepted and then held in high regard by others. Sadly these days the staff are so demoralised mainly because of corporate greed and lack of loyalty that is at times reflected in their attitude towards passengers. In 2024, its no longer about the flying experience but just how many bums on seats. Providing of course the plane is airworthy! Very sad, BA, very sad. 😔🙏
Fair enough, great video man, Can’t wait to start making videos like this in a couple years, it’s gona be hard to start to grow your channel but keep creating content like this your channel will start to blow up in no time. I subscribed 😀
Mr Square Ed That’s really good of you to say, thanks so much! And good luck for when you start, I’ll be watching out! 🙃
Awesome video! Can’t wait to see a NYC vlog😊
Love the Ferry videos🥰
Great video, please can you tell me what you filmed this on and what video software you are using as the quality is fantastic, thanks again and I have subscribed.
Paul newman Thanks so much!!! I’m still quite new to this so it’s a mix of cameras, haven’t settled on a proper strategy yet :) I use my iPhone 10, tend to mount an old GoPro 4 to the window, and have a Canon g7x as well. It makes for complicated editing though, need to cut down a bit :D oh, and talking of editing, I just use iMovie at this stage - doesn’t give as many options as other software, and can be a bit frustrating, but I’m still learning :) really appreciate the comments and the sub!
SteveMarsh thanks for your reply, your video’s are great, my wife and I are going to nyc in November, can’t wait.. thanks again and you’re welcome 👍
Paul newman have an amazing time in NYC! And get it on UA-cam, would love to see it! 😊
8 tortuous hours waiting??? Try living in Australia. We have long-haul flights everywhere. My longest transit stop was 14 hours in HK on a London to Australia trip.
Sadly no 747 for me on BA173 next month 😔
However, it’s my first transatlantic flight and I’ve a week in New York to look forward to, so 🤷🏻♂️😂
excellent meal service
claus stimpfig I found it really good for economy, and it was all done so efficiently as well, thanks for the comment! :)
How often do you travel to America Steve
It's been a while now, desperate to go back!
Nothing beats Qatar's in flight safety video featuring Barcelona players (When they sponsored the club) when I flew with them in 2016 to Bangkok from Heathrow via Doha 👍
Awesome! I'll need to see if I can find it on UA-cam!
You should have recorded the sound of the engines at take off instead of the music.
An early video, I hope my content is getting better now. I agree!
Nice view of Casey Neistat studio at the end!
Cheers James!
I've just discovered your channel. Great videos. You should sign up for Executive club if you haven't already
simsonie ohhh good idea - no I haven’t yet! Can’t wait to fly again, but how’s the time to get all that sort of admin stuff done :) thanks for watching and for the kind comments!
@@steve-marsh no problem
You'll be able to credit previous BA flights in the last 6 months too. Hopefully the finnair ones as well
simsonie ohhh interesting - I’m right onto it! Cheers for the info!
747 is very special to me even tho I’m 12, I always saw it when I went to the airport and it stood out to me in a way that I would go to the airport on every weekend just to see it, I always wanted to fly on it but my family say ‘stop being so stupid, it’s just a plane’ so I never got to fly on it😓😓😭 it always makes me upset when I see it on videos
Thanks so much for the comment and I couldn’t agree more! I really hope you get the chance to fly this beautiful bird, makes me sad as well to see so many airlines dropping it 😔
Unfortunelly I won’t, my fam say it we go to New York we will go LHR - JFK instead of LHR - FRA - JFK😥😥😔
Nice flight! I too love BA, but I've not used them in a long time. Aer Lingus works better for us and I like their two abreast side-seating. My trip this year is about to be cancelled, however. Yep, Covid has reared it's ugly head once more - for the second year in a row. Prior to Covid we visited our family in Europe (UK and Germany) every year for the last twenty years.
Oh Leon, I hope you get back soon - I need to try Are Lingus, only been on their wee turbo props, good info about their config on the bigger jets, will give them a try (when able to!)
you thoought BA were brilliant, well lots of people including myself would beg to disagree. Maybe you had a one off flight were you got a decent meal etc. At least you got to fly on a 747. BA now retired them all
Yeah, I feel lucky to have flown the 747 once more. Some of it may have been due to them saving the day with my trip, but I must say the cabin crew were exceptional on my flight and it made all the difference!
That's a bit subjective and anecdotal Davey! 44.56 million flew BA in 2019, so I find it hard to believe that "lots" missed out on Steve's documented proof! And you are right, we will all miss the 747's :(
