- Ceuta is a very interesting place, and also somewhere I had never heard of before, so join me on a journey of discovery, which also happens to be a ferry review with a look at the difference between travelling Standard Class and Premium. Thankfully there wasn't much difference in price as the layout was almost identical, with one big difference that means I'd ALWAYS choose Premium in future. Enjoy the video!
Itinerary details
Outbound Wed 5th October 2022, 14:30/15:30, Standard, €34.90
Return Thu 6th October 2022, 13:00/14:00, Premium, €46.90
(I did hear someone enquire about upgrade to Premium whilst onboard, and I believe they were quoted €25 to do so! Therefore, well worth booking in advance!)
For a one hour ferry, I don't think this is cheap, but the difference between Standard and Premium is minimal.
I stayed at Hostal Central in Ceuta (booking.com £30). Bear in mind, there is a difference between a 'hostel' and a 'hostal' in Spain - Hostales tend to be much more like a budget hotel, and suitable for a guy of my age as well!

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

The Pillars of Hercules was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The Pillars appear as supporters of the coat of arms of Spain. Thanks for taking us to such an interesting place.
Thanks for the info. For awhile i thought it might have something to do with colossus of Rhodes. Your info much more apt. “It’s Greek to me”. ;).
Makes sense! Wish I’d known that!
I couldn't have (and didn't) put it better.
To give more info the Pillars of Hercules were usually represented with an inscription that said "Ne plus ultra" (there is nothing beyond) as a warning to sailors. It was also a famous phrase in that time. Spain proved that in fact there was more beyond so it included the pillars with the opposite inscription "Plus ultra" (There is more) in its coat of arms.
It's also present in the USD symbol ($), which is copied from the Spanish Dollar coin, in which the coat of arms of Spain appeared.
It's made up of one of the pillars and a part of the ribbon that surrounds it, on which is written PLUS ULTRA.
The straits of Gibraltar are also known as the Pillars of Hercules--that's why the statues are there. Thanks for the trip!
Thanks so much for clarifying! Makes sense now!
Steve these ferries are built in Tasmania, Australia by Incat. They are seen world wide and one has broken the Trans-Atlantic record a while back. Normally they run at 35 knots plus so outside would be very windy not matter the weather. Always keen to see your adventures from far off Melbourne, Australia. Did not realise you are multi lingual.
Great export for Australia
they ran the US-Canada ferry runs for a while, and were in military service for the US Army and Navy
@@xr6lad i remember a "GREEN TRIP" from Westernport to George town many years ago......🤮🤮
Thanks so much for sharing!
One of them, named Manannan, connects the Isle of Man with Liverpool. It amused me that before she was bought by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company she had served with the US Navy.
"I wonder if it's hotter here than it was in Spain?"
Takes 2 steps
"Oh no... it is..."
Cracked me right up there 😆😆😆
Haha I remember that moment well 🤣
@@steve-marsh theres usually not really a difference! Be glad you were in the straits area. Always a few degrees cooler than malaga and inland is a proper scorcher. You were there during Levante (easterly wind) weather which is humid. I remember it being particularly humid in July and August in 2022.
When I went to Istanbul I took an intercontinental ferry within a city. To this day my only visit to Asia was popping over for an ice cream while in Istanbul.
The Portuguese feeling reason is pretty simple, it was a Portuguese colony long before becoming Spanish.
Ahhhh of course! Cheers!
You’re too good to us, Steve. Pushing yourself, as you do, to give us such great content. We appreciate you.
Thanks so much mate!
Ceuta was stunning, lovely, clean (mostly 😊)…Awesome adventure series, from Gibraltar to Ceuta. Love your chill relaxed attitude, never fretting in the unknown portions of your travels taking things on as they come. You make me feel as if I can be fearless in my travels just like you 😊
I guess the big fence helps keep it stunning, lovely and clean. We need one along the Channel Coast.
Thanks so much Inga! Haha wait till you see my journey home next week 🤣
Steve you worked so hard for this channel and definitely deserve 100k subscribers ASAP❤ love your videos from Ukraine
Thanks so much Andrew!
No more budget dining steve welcome to the mile hugh club 🎉🫂 £1800 revenue roughly per week well done sir
It amazes me the amount of English language signage and announcements in foreign countries. Impressed with your Spanish too.
Cheers Vinnie! Good point btw!
Wonderful bit of knowledge, young man. I have never been to these ports, but to have this bit of interest are so wonderful They are like golden nuggets. Peace be with you. Merry Ann from Minnesota
Thanks so much Merry Ann! I’m in your country right now :)
Another great trip video! Thanks for showing us places alot of us may never see! Cheers!
Thanks for coming along Mary!
This place is on my to do list and I pleased how easy it looks to travel from Gibraltar. I am currently reading a lot of history books and Spanish History is no exception.
Really enjoyable vid - I'd no idea that Ceuta was so beautiful. Oh, and as a Scot, what a treat to see a working ferry!
Haha sadly that's funny because it's true!
Yes a reference to the ferry problems in Scotland at the moment
Another great video. The headland in Africa and Gibraltar are called 'The Pillars of Hercules', which explains the references.
Ahhhh! Trust you to come up with that nugget of information! Cheers Scott :)
Marshy, tip from those of us who live in the tropics, stop wearing 2 layers when it’s humid mate, great vid, really enjoyed it mate, cheers.
Haha point taken 🤣
Your channel rules, man, I’m so glad I’ve found it
Impressed by your Spanish skills!
Thank you Steve, another great video. Safe travels.
Thanks Peter!
Great Spanish language skills! 🇪🇸
Cheers Sam!
I love your videos Steve! I love the quirky places you visit - especially islands, enclaves, exclaves/overseas territories!
Thanks so much! I try to keep things fresh, and get a lot of ideas from the lovely folks in the comments section :)
We had always wondered what Ceuta was like, thank you for the great video.
Glad to take you along :)
Pointless bit of trivia: The ship Regina Baltica, which can be seen at 23:16, used to belong to Tallink and Viking Line, which you're undoubtedly familiar with :)
Great nugget of info there!
Much enjoy this video. Thank you for taking us to see around Ceuta which I think most people have never heard of before.
Thanks Jacky! I was the same until recently :)
Yet another amazing video still my favourite UA-camr keep them coming and know I appreciate your videos very much
Richard thanks again so much :)
This ferry reminds me of Greece, where journeys on these are twice as expensive (and busy) as the slow, open beautiful old ships. We always take the slow boat, which the ticket agents don't even mention at first!
Another great video. It did look very Portuguese in its architecture. That hostel looked great for the price, all you need is a comfy bed clean room & shower. Look forward to the next video.
Cheers Christopher! No comfort on the next one… 🤣
Ceuta looks Portuguese in its architecture because it was formerly seized by Portugal in 1415, but transferred to Spain under the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668.

Bravo Steve.
A wonderful unique snapshot of a most unusual journey and a gorgeous destination.
Exquisite.
You never cease to amaze.
ML
Thanks so much, really appreciate it :)
A charming place that I did not existed. Thanks for the trip
Cheers mate!
The Portuguese feel might be because Ceuta actually used to be a part of Portugal! It only became a Spanish city in the 1640s or something like that
Thanks for sharing Steve. Have a nice day!
Thanks so much!
These things are built in Australia, in the late 90’s, early 00’s the Australian Navy had one of these called HMAS Jervis Bay which I deployed to East Timor on. It could do about 60-70kph and kicked up a wake behind it that was higher than the boat sometimes. I think it got sold to a British company after its service and is a ferry now. They are a great bit of kit and can really get up some speed when they want to.
Another tremendous video. Always appreciate you sharing different parts of the world with us.
Everything I do, I do it for you 🎶
In case nobody has mentioned it yet, the statues are because in antiquity the Straight of Gibraltar was sometimes called the Pillars of Hercules after the great big rocks on both sides. Ceuta looks amazing and just got added to a very high spot on my list.
P.S. You need some short sleeves man!
There are some amazing cloudscapes around the Rock at certain times, thank you for posting.
Thanks, aye fun to watch the weather forming!
Impressed by your Spanish !
Thanks Cliff! Or should I say gracias :)
Once again another fun time on my favorite mode of transportation, ferry's. You found the best places to go. Thank you once again for the work you do for us. Say hi to Alicja for me. Be well, stay safe (and cool), love from Texas.
Thanks Kate! Oh I wish Alicja could have come with me!
Thankyou Steve. That was really special! So clever that you are able to access those amazing places rather easily!
It seems so quiet! Post covid?
Anyway you have inspired me to pick up the Spanish again. Yours was way better than mine! 😅
Haha it won't take you long to be better than me :D I think it was more me going out of season, I believe during the holidays, the ferries are packed!
As always Steve great video..the world class traveler that you are !!.. I’m impressed at how well you speak Spanish senor. I lived in Miami for many years and picked up the lingo pretty well myself ..
Cheers mate! I fancy going to Miami sometime :)
@@steve-marsh Steve the Latina Ladies would dig u!!.. buts it’s a beautiful place as you probably already know
Great video Steve. I agree that it is always good to be able to go outside on deck and enjoy the scenery and views of other shipping!
And such an interesting place to see all the goings on :)
Never heard of this place, looks amazing. Why doesn't anyone go there???
Lovely guitar music. Your vlogs always give a good sense of what the area is like. Charming. I can’t help comparing these ferries to the ones in the Far East. They are a way of life for some people I suppose.
Thanks so much Chris! Never been over that way, but one day! :)
@@steve-marsh maybe the next time homer or Odysseus go, hitch a ride. ;). Perhaps they’re in the cafe of the ferry?
Great update Steve , we loved watching , we were on holiday in Morocco in the 80's and flew to Gibraltar for the day and loved it , great to see the Spanish enclave of Ceuta it looks a lovely place , keep up the good work Steve and say hi to Alicja for me 👍
Cheers Jim!
Thanks for sharing,Steve.
Cheers Richard!
Another great video. I am a new subscriber and i love all your videos. I will watch them all.
Another great video with good content and narrative. I appreciated the guitar music at the end with the Patreons scrolling in the ship's wake, and ending bang on fade out. Nice!
Thanks so much!
Very informative. Thanks. The busses to Algeciras sure are a lot roomier. than they were in 1973.
Thsnks for the video Steve, I spent three years in Gib while serving in the RAF, absolutely loved, and Morrocco was incrediable
That ferry reminds me of the old Stena HSS which went from Stranraer to Belfast. The only thing was it was a bit shaky on board. I'd love to go down there. I love the heat, better for your vitamin d the sun
Aye I remember that one! Cheers :)
Very pretty town and all those amazing monuments. That lovely vegetation comes with a price of humidity and heat - all that huffing and puffing is worth it . I do agree that it's very crucial that one gets an access to the open deck to really enjoy a sea journey. Thanks for a great trip .
Another great adventure mate you have my mentality nothing fancy its all about exploring thanks to your videos I have booked Gib for 4 days in January I had only explored staying in Gib not Spain I work full time on shifts and get 4 and 5 day breaks so I get away on cheap little adventures every month if I can I am off to Podgorica - Montenegro on Thursday thanks again and I really love your island hopping vids in Scotland
Hopefully more island hops coming soon! Happy adventures mate!
Love that you provide a time for people to jump ahead to if they just want ferry content, but I watched the whole thing. Nice little excursion video!
Thanks so much for staying with me for the whole trip :)
Great video, thanks for posting. Very impressed with your use of the Spanish language - many tourists don't make the effort but it's appreciated by the locals.
Castilliano Spanish at that, which would suggest some formal study.
Lol! I was thinking the same thing too!
He was at university in Spain I think for a year
Thank you Ceuta...
Lovely video 👍 I never knew such a place existed
Thanks James!
I walked across the border to Ceuta from Morocco. It was a very interesting and humbling experience.
I had considered it but heard it could take hours!
@@steve-marsh I guess that’s the thing. Some people wait weeks, months, years and risk their lives to get across that border, but with my pasty Scottish DNA skin and Canadian passport, I was just waved through - helpfully guided by the people waiting that I should just bypass the queues. Which is what made it so very humbling.
Excellent - and despite the awkward history, there's something very pretty about old colonial towns.
An awkward history? not the one in Ceuta, my friend...
Colonial town Ceuta?....read more Will you Mister ? Before commenting...
@@madgringo9263 Umm, was the area not in the hands of the Portuguese , Moroccans and others over time - so it has mixed colony history.
@@saintuk70 Ceuta has a very long Spanish history ....when the Germánic tribes invaded the Iberiams Península ...the North of Morocco was known as Mouritania (thus the Word Moor).... by the Romans Who Ruled It from their Province of Hispania ...
When the Goths formed the independent Visigothic KINGDOM of Spain.... most of Mouritania became Visigothic land too.
..thus Spanish..since the 5th, Century. A.D.
History reports that It was the VISIGOTH Count Don.Julian which was The Governor of Mouritania.... due to a grudge which he held against the VISIGOTHS King of Spain Don.Rodrigo ....who had seduced Count Don.Julian's very pretty doughter with a promise of marridge which he Didn't fullfil ....and feeling thus humiliated Don.Julian ...out of spite called in Muza's Muslim armies Which were clóse to Mouritania in their Jihhad .... and even procured the moors with the boats in the Bay of Ceuta to beging THE MUSLiM IMVATION OF GOTHIC SPAIN.....this occurred in the 8th, Century A.D.
It's no wonder that Morocco's claim to this Spanish lands in North África
are fully rejected in the United Nations....which isn't the case with Spain's claim on Gibraltar which the U.N. sentenced since the 1960s. On Spain's Favour.
The Gibraltar issiu since Brexit is dealt with the European Unión v the U.K. which for the KINGDOM of Spain is a different BALL GAME. Altogether.
This together with the fact that the people in Gibraltar voted in Mass to remain in the E.U. in the Brexit Referéndum.
Hiya Steve, feels a tad Portuguese when you land there because the Portuguese went there before the Spanish and built church and fortress I think, the year, 1415, just as Portugal started going about the world, the first stop was there Ceuta.
Ahhh thanks so much!
Just keeping on the ferry theme, at 25mins 39secs of the video there is a ferry there that used to be the Stena Parisien that operated between Stranraer & Belfast. Once Stena closed Stranraer that ferry wassold on to further service with Balearia.
Your vids are getting so much better, thank you for the great and interesting post
Hey really appreciate it, thank you!
Buen vídeo Steve. Tal vez te gustaría visitar La Mancha, para ver los molinos de Don Quijote. Una tierra muy distinta de Escocia por supuesto. Saludos
Muchas gracias y buen idea!!!
Be early for the ferry on Moroccan holidays, European holidays, it gets absolutely heaving! Great vlog. From Huelva you can take the ferry to the Canaries. Good Spanish, also!
Cheers! Oh I can only imagine what it’s like with all those seats full!
The statues of Hercules are in response to how the gap between The Rock of Gibraltar and North Africa was referred to in Ancient times
Excellent video as per usual Steve. Keep em coming. I scratch my head tho on your comments about the heat and humidity, yet you've always wearing a jacket???
Cheers! Hey, that’s my super-duper summer shirt with uv and mosquito protection :)
Why is it that the Spanish wherever they are make everything Beautiful and Ultra Modern ?
Spain is adorable.
Totally agree :)
Brilliant,,,,so interesting young fella!
Cheers Ian!
a Scotsman + speaking Spanish = 🥇
Good one. Very interesting.

Another great video, Steve. I have looked across the Med from Gibraltar towards Ceuta, but haven't set foot on the African continent. Ceuta looks beautiful.
Cheers Barney! Sure is mate :)
Everything Spanish is Beautiful....and Ultra Modern which leaves the U.K. lagging at least 50 years behind....ene?
But there is nothing you can do though.....is there ?....
You just have to LUMP IT
Blown away by the lack of crowds. My type of place. Thanks Steve!
Yeah, that was a real bonus for me too, especially when filming :)
Great video and now having seen will have to do it , many years ago I made the trip from Malaga to Melilla and would highly recommend , that was in my interailing days traveling mostly alone I now live in Malaga so will revisit and Cueta on the cards for sure.
Cheers Antonio - I'll need to give Melilla a go for sure!
Another top video, Steve. I like your relaxed and honest approach to things.
Thanks Chris!
Splendid!
That seagull looks like one I saw in Kirkcaldy a couple of weeks ago.
🤣
18:21 - KITTIES!
The plant life on the island was truly amazing. A botanists paradise. The island looked like a Spanish version of Switzerland. Classy and upmarket. Like you Steve l would have loved to stay on one of those posh yachts in the marina for night with a nice ice cold pack of beer for company.
Ohhh sounds perfect :)
But Ceuta is not an island. It is part of the African continent.
Thank you SO much for sharing this with us. I too struggle a lot with hot humid climate.. Safe journey to you further on - C, Denmark
Really interesting thank you....looks a great place. Excellent 👍

I can tell that you were in a very warm hispanic place as all the guys wear long pants, Steve. Nice to see you socializing with the Cuetan feline citizens.
Enjoyed this very much.
Thanks so much Lawerence!
Your Spanish is so good!
Thanks so much :)
Another great video Steve. Fascinating, never knew about that little part of Spain!
We've just come back from doing this trip (Gibraltar, La Linea, Ceuta). Thank you so much for the inspiration.
OMG! that sea glass! I am definitely going to Ceuta! thanks for video! 😃
I also like to get outside on a boat. I had never heard of Cueta before this video but it looks like a nice (and very photogenic) place to visit.
Hi Steve really enjoyed the video 🤗

Also - there’s a round tower just like that one in Malaga (just up the coast on the other side)
So impressed that you speak Spanish.
Gracias Theresa :)
Reminded me of Madeira
Always wanted to go there!!!
Pillars of Hercules in classic occidental literature are the symbol of the limit for the known world. I don't know if you tell it later in the video, I just stopped to put my contribution. Great video, I'm going to continue it just now
Thanks so much, and no, I didn’t have any idea! 🤣
You also got Melilla which is also borders Morocco as well as other islets including Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, Alhucemas Islands and Chafarinas Islands that are also claim by Spain and are part of North Africa.
They are not claimed by Spain, they are integrant parts of Spain, they even have military bases, and North-Africa isn't a country. You forgot to mention the islet of Perejil and the islet of Alborán. All those small islands are included in our constitution and receive the name of "plazas de soberanía" (sovereignty spots). In being integrant parts of Spain they are also considered as EU borders.
Many countries have territories on other continents like England, France, USA.
puerile comment
Like your style. Reminds me of my feytha!
I thoroughly enjoyed that Steve, thank you my friend from me in Irvine 🤗🤗
Amazing how ferries can run no bother perhaps one day ours will do to. As always an interesting insight thanks Steve
Haha too true!
Another little place for my own travel list
Another wonderful video! Thanks.
When Inter-Railing back in 1997, my mate and I went through Algeciras on our way to Tangier and ultimately Marrakech. Gibraltar looked amazing from a distance, but we didn't get there.
Not only were you born in the same year as me, you also seem to possess the inability to walk past a dog or cat without trying to pet it. That's a lovely attribute, but on one of your previous videos you managed to get a cat to miaow, which caused the cat on my lap to dig her claws into my legs and then search the room for ten minutes looking for the intruder.😂
Glad to hear it Nigel :) I struggle with countries where there are a lot of strays, I want them all!
Amazing how much you cram in Steve, guitars sounded more like fado than Spanish .
Sorry to be a pain Mr Steve, but when are we going back to Scotland for more adventures?😅
Perhaps one day you could take a trip to South Larnakshire and visit the Spectacle E'e falls at Sandford, where we scattered my Dad's ashes.
There's a fascinating story behind the name of the waterfall 😊
I’ll certainly see what I can do Kelley :) will be back to the Scotland videos in the not too distant future, please stick with me until then :)
