    I am from just outside loch rannoch, now live a lifetime away. I miss Scotland with every heart beat, these roads are the very same ones I took with grandad yo see cousins and friends.
    I am saddened to see many scots never leave their homes and take a trip into the backlands.
    Thank you for the journey.
    "From the lone shieling of the misty island
    Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas-
    Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
    And we in dreams behold the Hebrides"

    Watching your video brings back so many fond memories. I did a solo motorcycle tour back in 2013 in Scotland, came all the way up from Exeter. A few years later I learned my route plan was then promoted as NC500, guess I was a bit ahead the trend. Since then I did another 3 Scotland tours. One focused on the entire outer Hebrides, one all over Skye and west highlands, and the last one around Cairngorms NP. Scotland is such an amazing and impressive place, and I will never forget how friendly and welcoming local folks are. I visited a little hidden gem called Whaligoe Steps. After I return to my motorcycle a local gentleman insisted inviting me in to have some tea, and showed me his family photo album because his great uncle was the last fisherman who witnessed the final days of the tiny fishing port. I wish you good fortune, safe travelling, and above all, endless beautiful encounters.

      Tommy your trips sound incredible! Talk about freedom of the open road! And all the planning must be so much fun as well! You certainly were ahead of the curve - few made it past Inverness back then. I'll be checking out Whaligoe now, all the best for future adventures!

    Thank so much for this, I'm a Scot living in NZ and was supposed to be back home in May but cancelled cos of Covid. I went up Stac Pollaidh when I was was there in 2018 (not right to the top unfortunately!) and seeing it again was great. Lots of the scenery in Scotland is so much like the South Island of NZ, those lovely beaches you visited are reminiscent of the Otago Peninsula. But there's no place like Scotland and hopefully we'll all be able to travel overseas sometime soon. Best wishes from NZ.

    Hi Steve, I love the Highlands, and I never want to come home.
    Each to their own, but Ullapool is one of my favorite places, it is a great hill walking base, with plenty to do on dreich days when we can't go to the Mountains.
    The older I get the more I appreciate views from hard earned summits, climbing a new Mountain for me means so much more than a tick in some book.
    I couldn't do all that driving with out stopping at every turn, there is so much to see.
    Thank you for sharing this.
    👍😄

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much David! I do like Ullapool, and would actually live in that area without a second thought, it's just the feeling when you've been pretty much all alone in the far north for a while and are heading back down the road, Ullapool feels like coming back into civilisation again and I miss the solitude. (haha this really says something about me!) Totally agree about the summits - I try to really soak it in whenever I get to one. I haven't done too many yet, but hopefully a couple of videos from some of the novice trails this year :)

    Steve, after I watched your road trip and left my comment last year I was inspired to dig out the four boxes of KodaChrome II colour slides that I took on my trip around the North of Scotland. The first thing I noticed on the dated slides was that the trip was made in 1966 not 67. They had deteriorated a bit but not very badly. I was able to scan them in and smarten them up in Paintshop Pro.
    They all look great now but I haven’t much of a clue as to where anywhere is because I was just happy snapping and not making any notes. Any buildings and places look ancient and travelling the modern roads virtually using Street View, hasn’t been at all enlightening. John O’Groats however at least is recognisable. I spent over a month restoring those slides and some others that I took while tent camping on the Isle of Arran and by Windermere in 1967. It gave me a great focus in the lock down as we’ve been taking it seriously due to our age and the desire to get much older. So another thanks for your video and for the inspiration.

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much David! Would love to see them! A really good project :) if you wish to share them I’ll see if I know where they are, but I fear I won’t be much use!

    • @davidmeare9616
      @davidmeare9616 3 роки тому +2

      @@steve-marsh Hi Steve. There are some that are recognisable. I imagine there's a great Glen in there and a Loch Ness. Mostly they are of bleak , wet and occasionally magnificent highlands. I have a collection of restored 1960s photos on Ship Spotting that have had thousands of hits. I have commented a few times that many more of my pictures remained unpublished because they don't meet site rules. Because of that I have been 'encouraged' to put them up on Flickr. I've been a bit reluctant because they tend to get stolen, although I have had many requests for permission to use them too. The most prominent was for use in a documentary and I got a whole screen acknowledgement in the final production. I was lucky because as the ship's radio officer I had my office and an adjacent cabin up on the bridge deck. So I always had access to the best photo opportunities and the officer of the watch would always give me a shout if there was something interesting coming into view. I'm thinking about poking the Scotland Venture up on Flickr as I'm not concerned about copyright with them, so if I do I'll drop you a note here. Cheers! Dave

    I beg to differ with you (of course, I didn't have to do the narrow road driving 🙂) I loved every minute of this road trip and so thankful you took it. It takes me back to the quieter times when many roads that are now interstates were like these. Where small towns and villages were the norm and a stop for a coffee and found the locals were so friendly. The views. I was awe struck with the beautiful views you hiked to or caught along the way over the water. So much loveliness and so peaceful. This is why your channel, Steve, is one of the best, you take us few places others would bother with and you give us a gem like this. 💖

    track roads and appreciate the fact that locals use these roads all the time so don’t try any tell us how to use them, PULL OVER into passing places to let faster traffic pass you. I recall travelling in Scotland many years ago..but sadly, did not do this trip..remember Inverness, Fort William and a village called Crianlarich..where I met my first (and hopefully last) ghost...

      @@steve-marsh Stayed in big old bed & breakfast in Crianlarich..the night was clear and calm..Suddenly a gust of wind woke me up, I looked at the window and the curtains were blown horizontal, followed by all the coat hangers rattling in the wardrobe. I headed under the covers, looked out a few minutes later and the room was full of smoke, no smell or taste..a few seconds later the door handle started rattling vigouressly. (I was about 2 feet away from the door.)
      In the morning I discovered the door was unlocked...
      My travel mate was sleeping on the other side of the bed, she didn't hear a thing but took the p.... big time..!!
      I didn't actually see a figure of any sort but it was totally freaky...travel mate blamed it on several pints of Tartan Special...lol.
      I don't believe in ghosts but I'd run a hell of a long way if I saw one...😮😮
