Every thig is perfect but . . . i woud like the 'presence' of guitars and bass in the same level of flugelhorn, piano an sinthy solos! (it would be marvellous!)
@@fml169 Yeah the album track was the right take to choose, as Jay and Bill's solos are way better, and Michael's bass solo is harder to hear in the new mix. The Cory solo in this one is still amazing (I mean, they're all still amazing). Either way, it's still fun to get alternate solos to listen to, and overall, the mix is better because those strings and mallet percussion instruments are more present. Plus new camera angles is a fresh way to experience it, too.
This album was such a huge part of my development as both a musician and a person. My band director has us play music from this very album for our high school marching band. I'll always remember him taking a moment to have everyone in our band just, listen to this album near the end of a day at band camp so we understood what we were trying to sound like, or us practicing those Trombone lines. Amazing to think this album is now 10 years old. Excited to get to experience it again with the remastered album.
Of all the Snarky songs that take you on an amazing trip, this one is probably the most beautiful and exciting adventures. And this take is like hearing the story from someone else's perspective.
One of my absolute favorites, nice to see a variation. Still highlight for me will always be the Bass and Moog bleeding into Bill Laurance's solo. That brings tears to my eyes every time, so incredible.
THANK YOU for sharing additional takes. I've listened to the original release 100 times and it's so interesting being able to compare and hear different ideas. Attending two of the recording sessions for Empire Central gave me a huge appreciation for this band's process and each member's incredible musicianship and adaptability.
Wonderful song! I remember that I started crying 10 years ago with Bill's solo, and the emotion was very similar even listening to this alternative version. Having listened to it many times, I know the solos by heart, and it was very interesting to hear the different improvisational ideas play out in this version.
An interesting take, I like it! Cory's solo is more chaotic and I'm a big fan haha. I enjoyed the drums more during the flugelhorn solo in the other take, feel like the drums in the old take pushed the solo to another level. This must be a first take. It's great to get input as a listener to more 'incomplete' takes as well; not that this in any way is bad, it's still great! Much love!
So magical to see this years later. There must be lots of Snarky alternate takes. Would be great to see more of these gems. Doesn’t matter if people think one is better than the other etc. I bet there are lots which are release-worthy.
Just stunned that this level of musicianship a. exists (thank god) b. integrates classical acoustic instrumentation perfectly with modern electronic instruments and c. is generally unknown by the public at large. Tell Rick Beato that there is HOPE!
There’s a lot of music on YT which Rick could look at and say there was hope but most of his audience seems more focused on revisiting nostalgic music with emphasis on rock/pop. I don’t mind a bit of nostalgia but I have (with my sons) listened more broadly (admittedly avoiding contemporary pop)i ncluding the rather niche genre of vgm jazz thanks to a very clever local band called The Consouls. The mainstream, however, is still aimed at what most people can learn to sing swiftly ;) so it has repeated words and predictable tunes with many repeated notes (to oversimplify). Maybe the next generation will learn to appreciate a higher level of musicianship’s via the nostalgia of vgm but played as jazz complete with great solos and even with strings eg. Secret of the Forest played by The Consouls with a string quartet
A truly remarkable piece. Mr League is without doubt one of today's leading composers As for the Flugelhorn solo - well!! The best Fluge player since Freddie Hubbard, without doubt! And of course, and as usual, Cory Henry pulls no punches... T H A N K S ! ! !
The Curtain is an easy top 10 favorite of all music ever for me. Maybe top 5. I listen to it at least once a month. This month I came searching for it and found this alternate take, which I didn't know existed. I love it. I love so much about it. The solos are all uniquely different, but no less passionate. I really dig that Corey Henry and Michael League didn't just play entirely differently, they used different effects and sounds too. I love the alternate camerawork as well. Just everything about this feels right as an alternate take. Perfection in a second form. All that being said, please give us back the original too.
Another stellar performance, though I think you chose the right take in the end. Jeez louise you guys just nail it every time. My favourite jazz collective... big love from New Zealand
I love this song and this entire album. I listened to this entire album driving through Delaware and it kept me awake. The new mix most definitely gives it a new dimension, amazing! Please post “The Clearing” as well soon. 😉
Oh man, what a beautiful thing to feel the same emotions than in the original take but with sutil changes depending on who we are in a specific moment. Is true that in this take there are more doubts, but those doubts are genuine for sure, and thats the whole thing, thats the thing to reach. Its been a long time without Silva online. Is something that I re-hear every month. And each one of the times I cry. I cry silently and in a very specific way which repares my soul. Thanks for every piece you do!
4:55 I love how much more present the gong and bass drum were in the original, it feels super awkward in this take and I’m glad they made it the way it is.

I remember when I first heard this. I realised, I’m not a musician. I’m just someone who can put some notes together on a piano. These are musicians, true genius on display that takes you on a rollercoaster ride. I’m so glad 10yrs on we get more on this…🥳
This to me seems like an earlier take than the one on the released track. I much prefer the original. The solos, transitions, mix, and nuances/improvisations are all more musical and compliment the composition far better. That just shows how good these guys are, they heard this take and instantly knew what to do to make it a complete masterpiece. Especially Sput on drums, he knew exactly what to change about his grooves from this take to the original one. He’s such a masterful player, his accompaniment to Jay in the flugalhorn solo is amazing.
Those instruments aren't meant to be highlighted throughout the entire song or this iteration of it... You absolutely can hear Michael's bass riffs during Cory's galactic moog synthezier moment. I take that back, not only can you hear Michaels bass you can feel it.
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 Yeah, Michael's bass can be heard pretty well from Cory's solo until the end of the tune, and he does some pretty cool stuff... But you can't possibly use the "this instrument isn't supposed to be highlighted in this section" argument and expect me to accept it in the bass' case when said section is the literal bass solo.
Nice to see this take. Seems the only one from the session we attended in the audience. The first session out of four. AFAIK, none of that first one made it to the album/DVD. Nevertheless, one, if not the most memorable musical experience.
Super cool to see an alternative take, but could you please reupload the original? It's one of my favorite performances ever, it's sad to see it no longer on the site.
YES! So glad someone else said this. If I didn't know who this was and you didn't tell me when it was recorded, I would have guessed that it was Keith Emerson playing that solo!

No offense to Brotha/Lion Sput, I would have loved to hear this with Larnell on the drums!!! Just sayin... Again, DUDES!!!
Love the new mixing, mastering and solos, cant believe its been 10 years!! Still don't think anything can top Bill's solo from the old version though
Bill solo and Cory solo, from old version are masterpiece...
@@fml169 Yep and the bass solo is completely suis generis. I prefer the original release.

Cory definitely travelled to another world during his solo and Bill has people rethinking their life choices during his
100%!!
World??? He's still out their in outer space in another dimension. Cory is the living musical definition of String Theory!
Bill Laurance can make me cry no matter how many alternate ways he could play this solo.
How he creates such meaningful phrases on the fly. It's the kind of skill that no matter how much you practice, you need to have something in you.
This one's his best i think
Cool to hear the beginnings of solo ideas that all really got perfected in the original album take
Beautiful, but please put the original back up... 😘
do we know why they took the original down?
Apparently, it's to encourage us to buy the DVD. I don't hate the idea, but hope it includes a streaming option.
@@jonathankamrava9060 No encouragement needed. Already got the albums and singles. This one is next...

it has not gone anywhere. Both are exquisite in their own right. But I know what you mean, I'm partial to the original versions as well lol
Everything about this is wonderful, but oh my, that piano solo made me weep. I am so moved. Thank you ❤
My favorite part is the piano solo. And now I was very surprised. Here and in the old studio recording, these moments are very sensual.
