I am watching this today just before I walk into my first interview to become an educator. I recalled watching this talk years ago and it left a mark on me. Happy to see that you and many others are motivated by this talk.
I have never cried before because of a ted talks but when she told the story about telling her kids to say "i am somebody" it made me so happy that I just cried for a minute. This is what education should be, and what it can be thank you so much Rita Pierson, for giving kids the education many will never have and the support so many of us needed.

I hate when people say "more teachers should be like this." I worked with preservice teachers for years, and NO ONE joins the profession without this optimism and passion. No one. So the question should actually be "what happened?" instead of "why aren't more teachers like this?" When we figure out why some teachers can hold on to this mindset for 40 years and some can't, the focus shouldn't be on why they failed at their former happy idealism, but why the SYSTEM chews them up and spits them out so easily. Sapping the passion out of so many, and replacing them with fresh meat every year is a disservice to students, education, and our nation.
+totaldepravity1975 well its the same as medicine school... you can get away with being a poor student in most colleges... you cant get away with being a bad student at medicine because people will suffer and die... and yet it happens... the same you can get away with being bored and out of touch with most jobs but not as a teacher... it will show in your attitude in class and in the results in class... anyway i dont like this kind of teacher... my examples of good teachers were different and i think not unique just rational and patient enough
That is incorrect. Depending on the state that you are in, tenure can actually be very hard to obtain. Educators are judged based upon student standardized academic achievement. I am a future educator, and we watched this in class. This is inspirational. I will remember this video and rewatch this video for as long as I live. Thank you, Rita Pierson, for sharing your wisdom!
I'm in college studying to be an educator- and I want to be that person, the one that makes a difference. I've had several of these people in my life, and I want to carry on what they've done for me.
I didn't realize the first time I saw this that she had already passed away. Powerful, every time I watch this I am moved. Thank you Ms. Pierson, your legacy lives on! You are my champion!!!
What an example to us all. Never give up on the learners just because they're difficult. You have no idea what kind of lasting impression you may leave on their life. They may never tell you. We need EVERY teacher to be like this wonderful woman!
Remember that you have to balance everything. The mistake I made my first two years teaching was devoting too much time to those "difficult learners" and ignoring the quiet kids who showed up every day and also need a ton of help. We have to not overestimate our worth as teachers as well. We spend about 1 hour a day with kids and we have take an ego check and realize we aren't the be all and end all in all kid's lives. To some kids we will be vital but not to others. While "not giving up" on some kids make sure you aren't ignoring the kids who really need that time and attention from you. Most of these "difficult learners" dropped out despite help and devotion from teachers. Three were shot to death in gang shootings after they dropped out but I don't blame myself. Because I also taught the student who got a Gates scholarship. The difference was attitude, not teachers. Their parents and they have to take ownership as well. Remember, this isn't a Hollywood movie and you can't do it all. Every teacher will not be the same. In your desire to make "EVERY teacher" like this woman, remember the Arizona teachers making poverty wages who can't get by, 571 of whom walked out of their classrooms, never to return within the first month of school this year. You want great teachers but do you want them to have a life and be able to take care of themselves? Remember teaching involves the school, administration, teacher, home life and peer group as well as socio-economics.
I’m on my 10th year. I watched this the year before I started teaching. I printed out her quote at the end and I’ve had it on my desk for ten years now. I see it every day. This recharges me every time. I love it!!
Listening at 5:41 and 6:00 brought me to tears too. This just show how great of a teacher her mother was. And I hope to someday be a great teacher to my students too.
@@skullhead346 Hello , This message is from the teacher, Thank you for the information, my students posted the wrong information, I had them remove the information.
I was sent this by my cousin after having a rubbish day at school. After watching Rita, I remembered why I became a teacher and love my job and kids. So much so, I used this video in the whole school assembly. Thank you so much for being so inspirational.
First saw this TED talk about 5 years ago when i started as a Teacher Aide. It inspired me then, and now - 5 years on, as I am about to commence my teaching degree - it inspires me even more!
I just simply love the passion and expression she has for education. Not too many teachers exude this type of energy day-in and day-out. For a job like teaching, it takes a talented individual to put on a show while educating kids to be future leaders and movers within their communities. Thank you Rita!
I am in college for Early Childhood Education (PreK- Grade 4) and in today’s society, teaching is not in the limelight as much as it should be. The coronavirus has really propelled people to understand, the true nature, of what it means to be a teacher; not only as it relates to academics, but personal relationships. This video continues to inspire me through my educational journey. I’m so heartbroken that she died. I’m going to treasure this video even more!!!!!!!
This is the very 1st Ted Talk I saw 15 years ago when I 1st became a teacher, and watching it again 15 years later, it still inspires me. May she rest in peace. She will remain a teacher even when gone. ❤
I can't work in my psychologist consultance job without mentioning to others tje great Rita Pierson's video and sned to them the link. I never tired to watch her telling us about this Higher Purpose and about how teachers can transmit connection, self esteem and build confidence and grit ! just WOWWW !
This are the cases when one thanks God for the existence of internet because it allowed you, Ms. Pierson to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in my life with these words of yours. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I am future educator. This is really inspiring video. It truly motivated me alot. Maam.. your energy & passion is splendid. What an example for us all. Never give up on learners just because they're difficult. Thankyou for inspiring.
You were chosen!!!! I use that speech every year, and it does wonders for my students' morale! I remind them, almost daily, that they are the model class. "Why do you think you were chosen? Tell me what makes you great." Wow! They find reasons to believe in themselves. It's great!!! They behave better, try harder, and feel proud.
I'm from Germany, studying to become an English teacher. Our instructor in a seminar on teaching methodology showed us this video and everyone felt inspired. I wish I could tell Ms Pierson that she's inspiring people all across the world... When I teach school and get trainees, I'll show this to them as well.
I cant count how many of these I have watched. Hundreds, maybe even more, BUT THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE!! I wish there were more people like Ms. Rita, our world might be a better place.
THIS IS THE BEST TED VIDEO TO DATE. Mrs Pierson did an AH-MAZING job communicating the problem as well as the solution. I struggled the entire time I was in school. THANK you for being what every student needed. May my life be as impactful and I be someone's champion. I don't know you Mrs Pierson however I LOVE YOU!!! May God continue to richly bless you.
I am a 26 years old Mexican who teaches English on an Elementary school at my place and I am really proud to here people like her talking that way, she really inspires me!
and its true. I went to sumer school 2 times in my education but a teacher I once had changed my life. I won state for National History day after no one at my school hadn't in 7 years. I managed to get to Washington with a paid for hotel thanks to my school and it was simply because of how powerful love and human connection is. I wish more teachers were like her. They truly make a difference. I am forever in her debt.
It was this video, listening to Rita convey her passionate belief in the capability of all of her students, that inspired me to take the journey into teaching at secondary school. Thank you Rita, I hope your students came to realise what a diamond you were.
Here's something that helped me not flunk Biology in high school like I was absolutely convinced I was going to do: Humor and personality. My teacher was known as a bit grumpy and scary, but she was really funny and made up characters and situations in her head to explain the more technical bits of each lesson. I ended up getting a 95 (an A) for the course with an award for academic achievement. You can learn and laugh at the same time!
When I have a tough day teaching I often watch this video. Relationships are so important and I often become an actress as she says on the rough days. But as she says the legacy I will leave and the lives I will impact make it so worth it!

This was an amazing 8 minutes. What an inspiration. She's great. My favorite line: “Minus eighteen sucks all the life outta ya. Plus two says I ain’t all bad.”
This Ted Talk by Rita Pearson is powerful. Not all teachers are like Rita Pierson. But, she is right about getting children to like you as a teacher. The teacher needs to like the children in order to be effective. That connection needs to be made. Great teachers are remembered for a lifetime.
Watching this footage 8 years later and for the first time gave me chills. The passion she shares with the world about being a genuine educator and understanding your purpose and reasoning behind teaching. My new journey as an educator has just heighten and added more value to why I must reach and teach every student I cross path with. Thank you Mrs. Pierson you have inspired me evenmore.
I am in the process of becoming a sped teacher. At the meeting, we all was given this video to watch on our own time. I’m so glad I did. Next year I’m going to give my students a mantra to say everyday for positivity. Love this .❤
I've watched this talk many times and have never gotten tired of it. It is inspirational, humorous and refreshing. I wish I could have met Ms. Pierson, I would have given her a big hug.
I remember the first time watching this and being mindblown that this woman was the author of the "I am Somebody" Mantra that students in my district recite every morning after the Pledge of Allegiance. I was also applauding when she talked about marking +2 instead of -18 . This woman was amazing, may she rest in peace.
I'm working on my degree in Elementary Education. This is my favorite video to watch and it just keeps me going through school it reminds me why I started this degree. It helps me remember what's ahead! Thanks Rita!!!
I am a class room teacher. I just love to monitor Ms Pierson; especially when she said kids don't learn from people who they don't love. This means that there must be a strong class room relationship between the teacher and the students. As a teacher, you are equally a parent for the kids you manage through the academic period. Rest in peace our great teacher.
Ms. Rita Pierson, you have inspired me as an educator. It is about the relationship, the children that are in our present on a daily basis, and the impact that we as teachers make in their lives. God bless you.
My mother was a teacher and she was always tired, always so busy. She never had time for herself and for us. That was why I said to myself and swore to everyone who thought I would walk the same path my mom did that "I will not be a teacher." But after listening to this, I feel like I want to teach. Like I knew all the good things about teaching but because of my fear of not being an effective one made me blur those with all of its negative aspects. But she cleared out the blur. She is so inspiring and encouraging.
Mrs. Pierson brought tears to my eyes and sent chills through me. All children need is someone to believe in them. Thanks for all you have done in the lives of children.
You know the kids don't learn from the people they don't like!!! Damn True!!! I have seen many small kids not studying a particular subject because they don't like that teacher because they are not nice to them..
I have watched this video so many times over the years, it’s what inspired me to become a teacher and continues to inspire me and ground me every single day. Ms. Pierson, unknowingly, inspired a generation to become teachers. I will always admire her for that
Rita Pearson was an inspiring and credible asset to any education system. She is, was, and always will be a great leader for students and educators alike. Her commitment for the education system will always be praised and cherished; What she has taught us will never be forgotten nor outdated.
First time I heard this Ted talk, I was in uni and now I’m a full time teacher. I always come back to this and it helps me to be able to focus. I’ve had a tough time at my job, but Rita always comes to mind “every student needs a champion”. ❤
I’m in early stages school to become a teacher and I watch this video 1 every few months ans it gives me chills ans brings tears to my eyes! This woman words were so powerful and it has changed my thought process forever
I watched this video in my teaching class today . I feel like teachers and future teachers need to watch this video as a form of a guide or motivation. She really spoke to my soul and I’m glad I watched this video 🙌🏾
Mee too especially in these diffcult times of covid. I hope I make that connection, it was always so personal for. I can't teach kids who don't know or trust me yet. They have to meet me and we build that relationship. God help all the teachers this year! covid19 school year 2020/2021
I got a lump in my throat listening to her. She’s as right as rain. I had teachers who poured so much into me. And they were just being themselves. God, what an under appreciated profession.
Who thought that the government should be trusted to run the education system ? The government are Marxist change agents intent on destroying society, removing parental authority and then encouraging chaos in schools and universities. Teachers are servants of their masters so there is NOTHING teachers can do to fix system which has been designed by their masters to self-destruct.
This is an amazing speech I ever see in my entire life, this is like a charger to me as a teacher who has so many students who are not listening to me whatever I try to tell them. I have had similar problem about my students achievements, I have to carefully think how I can take them from where they are to where they will be. Believe me, I watch this speech countless times. Thanks so much Rita Pierson.
How she manage to brought out negative score of test to positive outcome to the child.... an ideal teacher!!! I've learn much from her... as a science teacher it is difficult to teach my subject to kids, but now I know how I can... Thanks Ma'am...hundred salute to you!!
My all time favourite ted talk 😊 I've watched this so many times . There's so many great life lessons in this speech . Also it's very funny , so it's hard not to like it .

How cool that you responded although it’s been 4 years! Funnily enough, the exact same story happened in my life and I am currently in my 3rd year of my Bachelors for secondary ed as well! Best wishes✨😊
I am a future educator, and we watched this in class. This is inspirational. I will remember this video and rewatch this video for as long as I live. Thank you, Rita Pierson, for sharing your wisdom!
Same here!
I'm 21 years in. If you keep this mindset, you will serve your students well.
I showed this to my students! I teach future teachers at Utah Valley University. I'd love your opinion on my tips and new channel!
you brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful have met you... at least through this video. We all need mentors like you. Thank you!
Makes me tear up - "We come to work anyway, because that's what we do." - "We're born to make a difference." - True! I've been teaching for 30 years.
I wrote a paper over this speech 2 years ago, and in need of a little inspiration i find myself watching it again. It never ceases to warm my heart
As a Secondary Level Maths teacher, I find it truly inspiring and emotional.. Couldn't stop tears when she was telling about her mother's funeral..
What a passionate teacher! It takes huge amount of passion and patience to deal with wide variety of students and bring out best in them
I’m on my 10th year. I watched this the year before I started teaching. I printed out her quote at the end and I’ve had it on my desk for ten years now. I see it every day. This recharges me every time. I love it!!
Her passion and heart come through !! Loved this
I love this woman's talk so much, in nearly all my university assignments, I cite her. An inspiration, RIP you wonderful human being.
Listening at 5:41 and 6:00 brought me to tears too. This just show how great of a teacher her mother was. And I hope to someday be a great teacher to my students too.
I'm a first year teacher of 7th grade math. It is rough! I watch this video regularly to lift my spirits. Very much appreciated!!
How have the years transformed you as an educator? Am curious as somebody going into education very soon!
She passed away one month after this TED talk. R.I.P Ms. Pierson 😢
@@teachingfromtheheart3132
Dr. Pierson said her mother passed away at 92... as in that was how old she was when she died. This TED talk was in 2013.
@@skullhead346 Hello , This message is from the teacher, Thank you for the information, my students posted the wrong information, I had them remove the information.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
That is really sad
😭😭
Ive listened to this maybe a dozen times. Thank you for your service and dedication to children. May your generational legacy live on.
17 years teaching & she's so right it's connection & relationship that you build with children you teach. Their precious
I’m a 41 year old man going through my graduate schooling right now to get my MA in Teaching. Rita’s speech INSPIRES me. Thank you.
Just stumbled upon this....I like her eloquence and charisma. Her students were a lucky lot, I'd say...
I have the exact same major! Studying at Holy Family University. & yes relationships are critical. This definitely a huge motivator video!👍🏼
This is the very 1st Ted Talk I saw 15 years ago when I 1st became a teacher, and watching it again 15 years later, it still inspires me. May she rest in peace. She will remain a teacher even when gone. ❤
You're the best Ma'am! I'm also a teacher in the Philippines and I want to bring joy to my students while teaching them my lessons.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
grit ted talk
I am a teacher and I have been teaching for 17 years. I watched this video countless times, you are in my heart Dr. Pierson.
I first saw this 7 years ago when I started in education and I still think of this daily
+Javier Casas se escribe to hear :-)
finger mistake. Cheers
+Javier Casas se dice typo :)
I apologize for this, but I feel that your English isn't good enough for you to be an English teacher?
you should see the "English" teachers they send abroad to foreign countries to "teach" english.
and its true.
It's been 8 years and this is still the best speech ever for me
It was this video, listening to Rita convey her passionate belief in the capability of all of her students, that inspired me to take the journey into teaching at secondary school.
I've shown this in teacher training on lots of occasions. Lots of simple truths and such an engaging lady. Thank you, Rita.
When I have a tough day teaching I often watch this video. Relationships are so important and I often become an actress as she says on the rough days. But as she says the legacy I will leave and the lives I will impact make it so worth it!
have never cried before because of a ted talks but when she told the story about telling her kids to say "i am somebody" it made me so happy that I just cried for a minute. This is what education should be, and what it can be thank you so much Rita Pierson, for giving kids the education many will never have and the support so many of us needed. It was this video, listening to Rita convey her passionate belief in the capability of all of her students, that inspired me to take the journey into teaching at secondary school. Thank you Rita, I hope your students came to realise what a diamond you were. It's so weird but I watch this same video every year. This video changed my whole perspective on teaching. I had no idea she died the same year this was posted. I had always wished to meet her but tonight I found out she has passed away. Real tears running down my face right now. She made me a better teacher and never met me. Her legacy lives on through all of us.
This was an amazing 8 minutes. What an inspiration. She's great. My favorite line: “Minus eighteen sucks all the life outta ya. Plus two says I ain’t all bad.”
She is such a great inspirational speaker. Love every part of her talk. Indeed it's the relationships that we build that matter.
Thank you, and be in peace Mrs. Pierson
Love this .❤
Words to live by… not only for Teachers but for humans… This is one of my favorite Ted Talks!
This gave me chills. LOVE HER !!!!
Such a powerful talk! I love her outlook and her heart. I'm so glad there are teachers like Ms. Pierson in the schools!
Gets me right in the feels every time. I love this and watch it before every school year.
I wish I had more teachers with the same ideals and a golden heart like Mr. Pierson. R.I.P. 💖
If you feel it, you must go for it :)
I teach future teachers at Utah Valley University. I'd love your opinion on my tips and new channel!
I have watched this video so many times over the years, it’s what inspired me to become a teacher and continues to inspire me and ground me every single day. Ms. Pierson, unknowingly, inspired a generation to become teachers. I will always admire her for that
Outstanding!! There are still educators that teach from the Heart
As a future educator, this really helped me to awaken the desire in me to passionately teach my future students. I can't wait for that moment!
I love her! Her ending will stay with me, "We are educators, we were born to make a difference." :-) What an inspiration.
Rita, what a beautiful legacy you left behind. You inspired me in a way no words can convey. Rest in peace sweetheart.
I wanna be like her!
God help me be a CHAMPION this year!
were you? I"m praying you'll be a champion this year, too
Leslie White AMEN
Leslie White my sameeee prayer!!!
Her speech is so encouraging.😀
Still one of the most inspiring messages to me to date. Thank you so much!
More teachers like this would change everything.
No it wouldn't. More parents who stress the value of education and a society that doesn't expect "hero" teachers at poverty wages would.
By far one of the best TEDTalks I've watched. It's so inspiring.
Rita motivated me the first time I heard her speak, and it is wonderful to be able to hear her again. I was sorry to hear of her passing. :(
Even how many times I'm listening to her speech, still not boring for me to hear it!
