  • In 1886, a Smallpox outbreak in Montreal scuttled that year's Winter Carnival: a giant festival of winter sports. City leaders in Burlington saw the opportunity to hold their own Winter Carnival that year, which included traverse sledding, skating, and the first international hockey competition. VHS Executive Director Steve Perkins and ABC 22 & Fox 44 anchor Mike Hoey stop by the city to learn more about the event.
This Place in History is produced in partnership by ABC 22 & FOX 44 (www.mychamplainvalley.com) and the Vermont Historical Society.

Lady, please tuck in your skirt on the traverse sled! :)
Did the trotters wear special spiked shoes? Did smallpox break out there? Questions, we have questions.
