Collections Video: Hilltop Farm Collection
Graduate student Timber Wright recently spent some time working on processing a collection of documents from the Hilltop Farm Project, an experiment in subsistence living starting in 1941 that lasted until 1945. The project ultimately failed, and Wright notes that was enlightening to trace the project's ups and downs. Some of the interesting items include letters and illustrations that help show off some of the experiences that the project's members had.

As you drive along I-89 or I-91 in Vermont, you might notice a series of strange blocks of concrete or marble at the various rest stops throughout the state. As it turns out, those are works of art, created as part of two International Sculpture Symposiums in 1968 and 1971. Vermont Historical Society Executive Director Steve Perkins and ABC 22 & Fox 44 Anchor Mike Hoey make a pit stop I-89 to l...
This Place in History: A Monument to Robert Burns

Standing in front of the Vermont History Center in Barre is a statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns. Why is there a statue in Vermont? Barre was home to scores of Scottish immigrants who came to work in the city's granite quarries, and brought with them their love of Burns' poetry. Local enthusiasts came together to form a chapter of a Burns Club, and erected the statue in 1899. Vermont Historic...

Since 1825, Newfane was home to the Windham County Jail: the facility was used to lock up local offenders, and at one point, was also home to a hotel wing, (which counted Theodore Roosevelt as one of its guests). As Vermont consolidated its prison system, the jail fell out of use and was recently vacated by the Windham County Sheriff's Office. The Historical Society of Windham County has since ...

Vermont has a rich railroad history, but its largest city, Burlington, has long had difficulties with rail travel. Many of the state's railroads bypassed Burlington to reach Canada, and it wasn't until the early 20th century that the city installed a union (a station connecting several different railroads) station. ABC 22 & Fox 44 anchor Mike Hoey and Vermont Historical Society Executive Direct...

When you think about comic books, you often picture otherworldly battles or notable locations like New York City, not Rutland, Vermont. But a handful of comic books from Marvel and DC comics have taken place in the Marble City, thanks to an enterprising comic book fan named Tom Fagen, who networked with comic artists and writers to visit the city's famed Halloween parade. Those artists brought ...

Andrew Johnson stood against the cruel policies of reconstruction. You could say these policies, promoted by Stevens, led to the formation of the KKK and creation of Jim Crow laws. Andrew Johnson was a courageous man.

Watching other videos the actual butter making process has them 'washing' the butter over with water to remove any remaining cream just before molding. They've strained/drained most water before going into the mold - but the consistency from freshly being worked and the added bit of moisture makes the consistency almost like really firm frosting... and I'm guessing this makes pattern acceptance and release a bit easier. But this video definitely covers gist of the process well. Thanks!

Back in the mid 1960s, my father came into a banker's box of papers. It was from an estate sale on Long Island, NY. The contents were cancelled checks and business documents of the Estey Organ Company. I am sure my father found some place to donate the papers.

Correction. Edmund Morse's mill was sold multiple times before it was purchased by Ricker in 1856. Family names in chronological order include: Noyes; Lund; Taisey; Lund (2nd ownership); Buchanan. Please refer to Mr. Glovers Groton pp. 77-78 for correct history. Another important fact not included, is in the late 1820s the State evaluated building the Onion River Canal in this area. Please refer to Vermont History (Vol. XXIII, No. 4, October 1955: A Canal Across Vermont, Melanchton W. Jacobus, p. 283.

2:50 Caleb Hendee wrote a memoir about his life and times around Pittsford. It's pretty interesting. He wrote about his Uncle, my 4th great-grandfather, Israel Ellsworth who abandoned his first wife and 5 children and was presumed dead. Years later, he was found to be in Virginia, having married a second wife and producing 4 more children. Some other stories as well. I believe it can be found in a search in pdf form.

I was a personal friend of Ruth's when I lived in Morrisville as I taught English, history, advised the yearbook, and directed plays. I visited the Morrisville Library to borrow a book for a student who was interested in art. The librarian said you should meet Ruth Greene Mould and phoned her. Ruth told me to come to her studio. I did. She fixed lunch for me and lent me books her husband had given her for my student. She was a widow at the time. I sat for a portrait for her. She gave it to me and my husband, Everett, when we married. I have written a poem about her painting in the Fleming which I read before Covid.

I actually own 3 of the Lanscape 1786 Variety Coins discussed here, as well as 2 of the Bust left 1786 Varieties. 1786 Coinage were the only ones actually Minted in the Rupert, Vt. Mint building. It was a small building, comprising 16'×16'. The Machin's Mills coinage of 1787-1788 were actually minted in New York at Machin's Pond or Lake. They were not actually sanctioned by the Republic of Vermont at the time thus, illegally produced.
