The NBA has essentially turned the game into a glorified Rucker park pickup game. Watching all five players stand around the 3 point line chucking up 3s and running no offensive scheme whatsoever plus the refs not calling palming and traveling is just pure shit basketball. Who wants to watch 90 combined 3 pointers shot by both teams in a 48 minute game? It takes literally no coaching whatsoever for teams to do that. Everybody is trying to imitate the Warriors and it isn't working.

I stopped watching after the last warriors championship. Not because I hate the warriors, I was fan of them.
I knew every team would replicate.
No one wants to watch what they can do.Al Anyone in the world can make a three pointer if they take enough. People want to see what they can not do. If Anthony edwards makes a dunk on someone or make a three which one you think viewers want to see.
Nba has opened Pandora’s box. They can’t go backwards
Rules and the point increase is just one part.
      Media coverage is just awful
Melika andrews was a nightmare and a awful person
Then how the coverage of the nuggets winning then overshadow of lebron.
I am glad the commish has done something about load management because that was just insane.
      Too much power for players
Bottom line there are other sports.
Nba can compete with baseball hockey.
Not football because of the metrics. That’s a false statement (I am not saying deliberately) but football is 17 games then preseason etc. it’s easier to miss a basketball game but not a football game.
The nba should be happy if basketball game gets half amount of viewers to a football game.

Eliminate the defensive 3-second rule. That rule was used to unclog the paint in an era where spacing was an issue cause 3point shooting wasn’t great. But with all this 3 point shooting and spacing what’s the point of the rule? Bring back more physicality by ignoring hand checking a bit more, call traveling and carrying calls better, and fix the dumb step through bs. Let players express their emotions more instead of calling a tech every time a player gets remotely excited.

in my opinion 20s is the most better era in balance, shooters and physical bigman and 90s is the golden era, back then I watch Circus basketball in television only they do long half deep 3s in a row before step. With no defense. and that's how I see to day, And1 came up way more entertaining,
Back in 70s to 90s rules change to Less dominate the legends, now Adam silver change the rules to make players dominate the numbers of legends from the past, and people to day know that and ratings is the evidence. I believe Adam silver is aiming a younger fans , I think in 2030 to 40 majority of young dudes dosent know what I witness, which maybe the ratings may grow up one day. Cuz to NBA revenue bigger in outside market unlike US. Because it's not lebron but the international players are the real market value outside than lebron I think.

I’m now considered old school, started watching as a preteen in 1990. The goat Jordan once said taking too many threes takes away from building other parts for the game. Analytics has shown more 3’s does lead to more wins but MJ’s comment actually explains a bit why viewership is down. It did take away from other parts of the game and it’s made the game very one dimensional. Majority of plays are either looking for a 3 shot or are moving the ball around looking for a three but then finding a cutter.
Now, Jordan’s era had too few 3’s. I think the right mix of shots for entertaining purposes maybe the 2000’s to early 2010’s before the pace and space era. You had a nice mix of 3’a, mid range, post ups, and driving to the hoop

I’ve seen fans across social media claim that Anthony Edwards was going to be their next favorite player because of his mid range/ dunking ability and mentality. (Similar to players that they grew up with like mj, Kobe, etc) When you go away from that and follow the league with shooting 3s it not only makes you less distinctive but it also creates another player that takes a million 3s like every other player in the nba right now. What Steph did in 2015 was incredible and at first everyone was amazed by it because he was the only one doing it. Now that you have everyone doing it people are starting to yearn for the old nba where dunking on someone was more viral/ entertaining than shooting from the logo or half court. A player I would say that reminds me of that era besides Ant is Ja, who a lot of people are fans of.

Also the nba is in a little bit of a grey area right now looking for its next star. And they’re multiple reasons as to why viewership is declining. I am also one who believes it’s 3 point shooting but it’s also the nba not finding it next face yet. I’d suggest to look at the viewership numbers in the finals after mj left the league. The teams that came after him were the lakers with Kobe and Shaq and the spurs with Tim Duncan. (The lakers obviously the more popular team out of those two) There was definitely a slight decrease which led to the rights being sold to Disney and ESPN/ABC. It wasn’t until years later when Kobe became the face where the league started to grow back. Even in Lebron’s first finals in 07 it was the worst watched finals in nba history and a lot of people considered him the greatest ever nowadays. In my opinion I think the common denominator is Adam Sliver because after inheriting the league from David Stern who already had a lot of upcoming teams marketed well like okc and the Warriors, those teams would eventually blossom into the most famous teams in the league. There really hasn’t been an essence of that in this Adam Sliver Era now. Which is ultimately hurting the leagues potential in my opinion.

Growing up as a Mavs fan, I have learned what good basketball looks like. Don Nelson ball was fun, but not going to get you a championship. He fills the court with shooters and didn't care about defense. They had little post up offense. Lots of fast breaks and 3s. But they were soft on defense for years! Then they got Josh Howard, Marquis Daniels and Eric Dampier to compliment Dirk, Terry and Finley. They weren't as dynamic on offense, but they suddenly had a defense and toughness. They made it to their first NBA finals in 2006. Then centers got more athletic and Eric Dampier couldn't do much. Finally, they brought in Tyson Chandler, Shawn Marion, and Deshaun Stevenson. The defense was fantastic, and the offense was well balanced, and sure enough, they win a championship!
3 point shooting centers and soft defense is something I have learned to hate.
Having said that, it's important to note that the Warriors did have a good defense, and they created easy dunks with spacing and setting picks. The problem is that everyone is attempting to play Warriors basketball, but they don't understand it. I see the Mavs standing around a lot on offense and chucking up 3s. Kyrie Irvin helps move things more and they have been getting good defenders lately. But generally, I hate the way they play half the time!

True shooting percentage, and even the basic math of 3 is greater than 2 does not take into account free-throws. The fact is, a player is much more likely top be fouled driving to the basket, and if the player misses the shot when being fouled, that attempt is not included in his shot attempts, nor are the free-throws. Due to this, the true value of a drive is not accurately being calculated.
For one of the most athletic players in the league, well known for his incredible ability to drive, and massive advantage when driving over your average player, i think this error in the sample is likely more significant.

The defensive 3 second violation rule is also to blame. Without this rule, the paint could be packed with defenders, forcing smaller players to shoot from mid range.
Nowadays the lanes are open and its much easier to hit a layup or a dunk, so players go for that instead, or for the three.
The whole situation is fixable though. There are various measures to be taken:
    1) move the 3 pt line further away from the basket, and eliminate corner 3s. This will force less capable 3 pt shooters to take mid range shots.
    2) remove the defensive 3 second violation rule. Combined with #1, it will move the game a lot closer to the basket.
    3) allow hand checking. It will allow for a significant drop in 3 pt percentages, forcing players to move closer to the basket to score.

Last night, Boston took 87 shots- 56 of them were from three-point range. 64% of their attempts were from three.
I commented to my friends that this was definitely contributing to people not being entertained - in my opinion- and not watching the NBA
As you pointed out, teams, shooting very high percentages of their shots from three points is in fact successful - so if something isn’t done, it will continue to increase. Basketball needs to figure out if in fact the decrease in viewership is due to this- I’m not sure. But if it is the game needs to change- because it’s an entertainment product. They could eliminate the corner threes and move the three-point line farther back. This would probably be the simplest solution. Otherwise, they would have to change the way. The game is scored, and that would be too complicated and too jarring to the audience.

The problem is not so the rise of 3' (even NCAA and FIBA did it) than how does rules changes helps it.
2001 : an uncomplete version of zone defense was allowed, with a 3 sec in the paint rule for defenders, to limit iso plays (considered boring and slowing games) and encorage ball movement. It didn't cure the scores decreasing. So in 2003 handshake was banned to help offenses. Didn't work that much too until the rising of 3'. The problem is that with this rule set, while encoraging 3', the spacing it creates leads to little contested layups priored over postup and midrange plays.
The fact that players became better at 3' with training is ok, but the rules should be changed or reset to get the game more blended : if you remouve time limit in the paint for defenders, it leads to more rim protection and less easy layups, and gets back the crucial role of big mens ; and with more handshake, it leads openshot positions to be fewer and harder to get. That could change the shot chart, and get back some interest in midrange and postplay, but with better long range accuracy than during the 80'-90'.
Change the skills and tactics, not the rules.

I think it was Howard Beck that suggested the NBA move to a 44 game schedule with a more "regular" schedule for games. He argued the "event" nature would help with ratings. I think it would also help with some of this stuff. Shooting 40+ threes a game works well over a long enough season because it allows for players to shoot closer to their "average" percentage given the large sample size. By reducing the number of games, the sample size would decrease and, suddenly, each individual game would have more value. I think this would lead to more playoff-like defense during the regular season which in turn rewards players who are able to simply "get buckets" by driving to the hoop or pulling up in the midrange. As opposed to this weird law of averages game all of the teams are playing now. People don't want to watch math equations, they want to watch tough competition.

yeah I think there's too many threes now - it's much better to watch a balanced game with all of the skills on display, cuts and dunks are among the most iconic scenes the game has ever produced.

The reduction in popularity is the product on the floor.
No one doubts the offensive impact of increased 3 point shooting is a positive thing.
The issue lay with style of play - it used to be that most teams had a really varied style of offense to each other. Nowadays, most teams play the same way.
In today’s game, I believe you can have offensive variety while still shooting about 28-32 3’s per game. And the mid range isn’t dead, great scorers have it as a weapon - the Suns KD & Booker are good examples - in case the 3 pointer is taken away.
Like most things humans do, Analytics was a positive tool to begin with, then it was taken too far & everyone copied that one successful team instead of developing their own identity.

I think the reason why viewership is down for the NBA, is not because how the game is played, but because of the long ass timeouts in between games. I stopped watching games because of those timeouts. They just kill the excitement for the viewers with those long ass timeouts

Time to move the three-point line back! Yes, it's been done before and for my entire lifetime, there has even always been a discrepancy between the three-point line from college to pro to account for "increased skill."
It's patently obvious that the skill level of the game has reached a point where it's time to take the next step and make the game *even more* difficult to make it *more* clear who the best players are.
What's boring is not necessarily that there are too many shots (that's the point of the game). What's boring is that one strategy now is clearly the best one and it's used by everyone and there's no more variety! In addition, we can no longer actually tell which competitor is "better" in the *competition* because there is *such* an overload of competitors with one particular (albeit critical) ability! Pushing the line back *fixes* that problem. Suddenly, teams will have to rethink their strategies, because a 22-ft shot is no longer worth 3, but 2, and teams will have to decide how many 25-ft threes to take vs how many 2-pt shots to take.
And yes, that almost certainly means baseline threes become dimensionally impossible (because there's not enough room to the baseline to allow for a player to be 25 ft away), and I support that change, because that three-pointer is almost too easy now and I don't believe it deserves an extra point. Basically, I think we're now at a moment in development where if you want that extra point, you should have to earn it by shooting *far* away from the baseline! And yes, that'll change strategies even more - you can't position all five players beyond the arc anymore and take full advantage of the court's space. What do you do? How do you as a coach navigate that? Do you keep all five players away from the baseline? Do you have one player by the baseline? Two players? Do they stay near the rim or out wide knowing it's only 2, not 3 points, but that coming in close can clog the lane?
*This* would open up new strategies and allow us to see the next true evolution in the game! That is what's annoying - we have such a wealth in shooting skill, and the game is *not* forcing teams to find creative ways to utilize it (basically keeping the game in such a way that there's only *one* good way to use it and there's *no* variety anymore)!
Seriously, it's long overdue that we move the three point line back at the pro level! *That* would make this game so much more exciting and lead to all kinds of new innovative basketball strategies we've never seen before (because the game itself never rewarded those behaviors before).

Why does everyone hate 3-point shots? I think it's great. It's a hell of a lot more entertaining than layups or easy dunks.
The 3-pt shots and alley-oops have been the most exciting parts of the NBA in the last few years. You still see monster dunks every now and then, and it's even more badass than it used to be.
I don't know why everyone hates it.
I know most people won't agree, but I like it.

This could be changed really easy on so many points:
    1. Less regular games. So the teams wouldn't have to rest their stars with load management. Optimally only 2 games with same conference and 2 games with different conference team. It has two downsides: less ticket sales and maybe TV revenue and the east having far worse numbers (because western teams are much stronger).
    2. Bring back hand checking (more effective defense)
    3. Abolish defensive 3 sec (so the big guys do not have to rotate that hard and get more rest > they can play more in their style and do not have to switch during defensive action on 3 point shooters)
    4. Move 3 point live further / make the normal shots 3 pointers the wide range shots 4 pointers / allow only certain number or 3s etc. This would cause teams to concentrate less on 3 points shooting.
    5. Be stricter with traveling, carrying and flopping.
    6. Erase the current rule on salary caps. It has destroyed GSW and will destroy Boston and every great team. So there will be no Dynasties because the new rules make that too expensive. Which is not really good for the game people loved dynasties and rivalaries.
If the NBA does not take action, the game will devolve into a 3 point shooting contest like Golden State vs. Boston in 2022. That was barely watchable with GSW already shooting a lot of 3s and Boston trying to do the same but having a lot of bad days. At points it was really boring with GSW shooting a 3 pointer failing, then Boston doing the same, then again.

A game centered around 3’s has a lower risk of injuries. Used to be guys wouldn’t develop a shot until their knees had gone. People talk about load management and players being soft but it’s more on the league and the teams. They’re protecting their assets. Less people in the paint, less contact, and more games = more money.

NBA, for the good of the league, please change the 3 point shot to only be valid after an offensive player touches the paint with the ball, leaving step backs, or kick outs. Otherwise, half court shots remain 3s, but this will avoid boring, lazy walk down lobs which negate teammates.
