Maybe some day they could "save" baseball by addressing ridiculous blackout restrictions and tv deals that push people away from using extra effort or money needed to watch any baseball at all. Especially when going to games is expensive as hell.
It's a genius move because it inserts doubt into the batter's mind. At least half of an at bat is mind games by the catcher and pitcher messing with the batter.
When I was a boy growing up in Boston in the 60s, the game was great. There was plenty of day baseball and day/night double headers. The season and World Series ended in early October, not November. Also, as a boy growing up, almost all the Red Sox games were televised on UHF, which could watch without paying for it. My parents were poor and could not afford to pay for me to watch baseball. I never went to a game, but I was able to watch the games on TV or hear it on the radio. Also, the World Series games were in the daytime. Young kids have a hard time watching baseball at night if they have to go to school or their parents can't afford cable. Baseball has gotten ridiculous with its overpriced tickets and cable viewing. When I was a boy, I and all my friends' first love was baseball. Now, it's a sport for the rich, privileged middle-aged men. If they want to save baseball, make the sport available for young boys. Also, when I was a boy, I played whifle ball, baseball, and softball with my friends on the streets or the park. My parents couldn't afford to let me play little league. I grew up following my beloved Red Sox and watched their games on TV or listened to them on the radio. I feel bad for kids growing in Yuppie Suburbia, where they can play sports on the streets. No wonder why kids have no interest in baseball. Greed is killing baseball. Make tickets affordable for families, and put baseball on regular tv.
I grew up in the same era and me and my friends played in the never maintained school yard field while the little league all played down the road in the well manicured field. Occasionally they'd try to chase us off the school field, but since we were the ones who maintained the field with our own lawn mowers that wasn't happening. They had to beat us if they wanted our field and we always stomped them mercilessly and sent them home in tears..lol Splintered wooden bats, gloves that were once our grandfathers and balls wrapped in tape..The bases were old chunks of plywood or whatever else was handy..and we never had uniforms..but all the best players in the neighborhood played with us and not the nepotists little league..
That's why I like some of these exciting younger players. They excite kids to get into the sport. Let's players showboat a little, in reason. It's exciting. Getting kids hooked is the way to save the sport long term, but MLB won't realise that for many years

I went to my first baseball game last week (yankees against blue jays at yankee stadium). It was just overall a great experience, even though it was a "boring" low scoring game. It seems to me (a complete novice) that the clock really made a difference and forced the game to flow at a nice pace. And it was not too quick, it still was a quite relaxing experience unlike every other sport I'm used to here in Europe.

The problem with baseball is that I CANT WATCH IT. I downloaded the mlb app and paid the subscription and the app still tells me “you can’t watch postseason games” ITS OPENING DAY!!! I swear the MLB does not want me to watch it. I have to watch on the go (I’m currently in Japan) and the MLB won’t allow me to PAY to watch a damn game because apparently their app thinks it’s the postseason or it thinks I’m too far away from St. Louis. They make it too damn complicated to watch a damn game
I have taken to watching restreams of sports not on cable because even subscription services geographically blackout which is so dumb. If they wont let me watch what I pay for, i just dont pay anymore. They should at least let you select X teams to be able to watch every game of. But nope. Its geographical still

Max Scherzer on the mound could be diagnosed as psychotic. So him using the pitch clock as a weapon is on brand. Zack Greinke using PitchCom in Spring Training and not taking it all seriously is totally him as well. Zack calling his own pitches must have been wonderful for him.
I went to my first baseball game in my 28 year life on june 7th 2023, Mets vs Braves. And I must say as a new baseball fan the whole experience was very enjoyable. The amount of game that went on was perfect not once was I bored watching the game. Before this year I never would have imagined going to a baseball game because they seemed boring...
Meanwhile, I went to my first baseball game since 2018, and I was RELEIVED at how quickly the game ended. Mind you, I've only ever gone to three games beforehand. Two of them were extra inning games. This new pitch clock is MUCH appreciated.
I went to a game earlier this year. Holy fuck was it dreadful, 1 hour in and we're already in the 7th inning. I want my baseball games to feel like an event, not an average trip to the grocery store. But it's okay, according to this generation, having a low attention span is good
I've been a big baseball fan for 23 years and the game is much more enjoyable. Baseball puritans are bad for the sport and they need to be ignored. They're like old men complaining about the 3point shot in basketball
Longest game from opening day was Cardinals/Blue Jays at 3 hours 38 minutes. Mostly attributed to 384 combined pitches thrown, 19 combined runs, 12 pitching changes.
Certainly longer than what people want, but at least offense was happening. People have no problem watching 3 hour football games because things happen pretty consistently in that time.
Yup. The second longest game on opening day (BAL @ BOS) also had a combined 19 runs, 26 hits, 3 errors, 10 pitching changes, 344 pitches, and was only 3:10. Average game opening day was 2:45, median time was 2:38, and only 5 games over 3:00 (only that one over 3:10). Shortest games (two) were 2:14. Not a bad start.

I'll voice my opinions on the rule changes after I've seen what it does in the next few months. However, the one thing I can't stand is the extra inning ghost runner. That to me is atrocious. I do like how they dropped the defensive shifts though. Lefties AVG will skyrocket.
The ghost running is outrageous to me, and slightly behind that is everything to do with the pitch clock. They are talking about punishing bat boys... heaven forbid teams have something fun and memorable for a child or fans. The shift rules seemed half baked and don't go far enough.
@@gregpenismith1248 far enough as in "they dont let clubs freely do whatever they want because this is baseball not "Rob Mannfred's penny squeezing simulator?" Because I agree, not letting teams play ball smarter and artificially restricting them is lame as fuck.
I think the pitch clock will irrelevant as pitchers get used to it. Pitchers used to pitch at the pitch clock pace without the clock. Any baseball fan who is over thirty probably watched Mark Buerle pitch at least once. The bigger based only favor the runner on tag plays. They favor the defense otherwise. The ball gets there faster than the runner.
Larger bases means you can "round the bases quicker"... Making triples and going from 1st-to-home a lot easier. The trade off benefits the offense on any ball hit past the infield especially with runners on base. And in 2 out situations.
I have never understood why pitchers never got more involved in pitch calling. Jimmy Key is the only pitcher I've ever seen that would give signs to the catcher. The catcher would give the initial sign and then Jimmy relay his sign back. If the catcher put down a "1" but he wanted to throw a "3" then he would "swipe" with his glove 2 times. It was very efficient and didn't require any technology at all.
Technology that kills human exchange of thoughts is not good for us. Speeding up the game is good, but having a computer system that essentially is a one way form of communication makes baseball even more individualistic than it already is. In a world where cooperation and communication are in serious decline - arguably endangered - it is a sad thing to see one of the most timeless and unique forms of communication and cooperation in sports, "the battery", essentially neutered by tech. It's just sports, but it's another area where we are losing what makes us special.
At this point watching baseball is like watching a group of statisticians discuss a complex board game. There’s a bunch of percentages for obscure actions, and a lot of meticulous rules.
Luckily all of these rules shouldn’t be able to make the viewing experience worse. The viewer doesn’t have to keep track of how many pickoffs there have been, what the timer is, or how large the bases are. But they definitely notice games taking less than 3 hours, more steals, and more scoring.
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ Wow, rule 3.16 seems extremely odd. And who is this Jesús fellow? Is he one of the Dominican players? Dan is right, baseball rules are getting confusing.
Overall I'm interested to watch the impact of the rule changes over the course of the season. The only issue I have at the moment is MLB going after bat boys, that's just not cool.
Yeah going after bat boys is over the top. You'll save what, a couple seconds per game at most? It's silly and I'd feel bad for an overweight kid who's a bat boy and can't run very fast.
Don't see it as going after the BB. The manager may give the kid instructions to dilly-dally or drag his feet executing his duties. Using the bat boy to manipulate the rules is something that about half of the managers/players would do.
There is word that the stadiums are losing revenue from the shorter game times. Less time equals less money being spent at the consession stands. From the discussions I'm hearing over my local sports talk air waves, there is a possibility that stadiums may end up opening the gates earlier which I like that idea. I never get to see my home team practice on the field and the gates always seem to open when the visiting team is practicing. So this would be a nice change if it happens. Spend more time at home away from home.
Nobody practices in the big leagues anymore. Maybe once a month a couple guys will take some gbs/fbs but they don’t even use fungus now, the ball is shot out of a handheld cannon (dead serious). If you’re referring to batting practice though, every mlb park has always opened for BP.
Yeah, and annoyingly so far, only a few stadiums have extended beer sales into the eighth inning. Annoyingly the Giants here haven’t even though they probably have one the largest percentage of fans who aren’t driving themselves after the game.
People really aren't rushing to pay $7 for a hot dog after they've dropped $1,000 for their kids to come with them because we're paying Shohei Ohtani $1Billion.
As a former baseball player, MLB players not being able to hit opposite field is just insane and lazy. To be playing at that high of level but not able to control where you hit it is ridiculous. I understand the MLBs reasoning for the rule, but if you suck at hitting one direction and they put a shift on you, maybe it’s time to learn how to hit the other way
Top hitters can, but a lot struggle to be overly accurate on some pitches. 90mph fastball right down the middle? Good hitters could probably place it exactly where they want on the field
this aged like milk. they got rid of shifts and baseball is more fun to watch them ever. ticket sales are wayyyy up. the league is seeing growth for the first time in decades.
The best players of a sport do not play in professional leagues, (most of the time. You do get your Ohtanis and your Bradys and your Jordans. But these are extremely rare). In order to go pro in a sport, you need connections. You need to be introduced to a coach at a prestigious university, or you need to know someone who can market players to teams. The best soccer player in the world is some no one in a rural town in China or South America, but they'll never see a professional stadium. I think a lot of people realize this when they play highschool or college sports and wonder why the guy who could play literally every position is cut while someone who can't throw a change-up or can't tackle anyone larger than them gets a full-ride scholarship.
hot take, i would like them to move the fences back 5 or 10 feet, it would open up space increasing doubles and triples, while also decreasing homeruns thus forcing teams to steal bases, hit and run, bunt ect to score runs, instead of get on base and stand there hoping for a homerun
So, a bomb would really have to be a BOMB! I am ok with that. So many times I see a hitter put one over the fence but when I saw the swing my first thought was no way that is going out.
Really feels like American sports are all about "highlights" rather than the actual sport, probably why Football (soccer) isn't as popular over there. These changes might well result in more hits and web gems but, they also subtract from any duels between batters and pitchers, and web gems are good because they're not as common, if you saw 3 a game they wouldn't be called "web-gems" it would just be fielding. I dunno about the changes, seems overkill to me, I really like baseball, but American sports culture as a whole kinda makes me sick to my stomach
Baseball was America's Pastime from the 1890s through the 1970s, the glory years of the sport. And back then games were just over 2 hours, they didn't shift, batters didn't step out and adjust gloves after every pitch and the game featured base hits, hit and runs, stolen bases, squeeze plays and was not just a home run or strikeout contest. As a compromise I would like to see the 8th and 9th innings have progressively longer pitch times if the game is close, but overall I think these rules will bring back something closer to classic baseball.
In middle school the school took a trip to a game and it was my first time seeing a baseball game (I didn't know anything about the baseball at all). There was so much down time between pitches and everything I didn't even know the game was going on for almost an hour, I thought they were warming up or something because almost nothing was happening.
i went to a baseball game once when i was like 8 or 9. I remember just sitting there for like 3-4 hours with hardly anything going on. We wound up going home early and found out later the game didn't end till like 1 or 2 am.
Opening day was only a few days ago and from the games i've seen they are already 30+ minutes shorter, have more balls in play, and more runs. It's fucking awesome.

The rule to force batters to stay in the box is a good rule. The problem is not that they are a foot or two outside, but because some tend to wonder around in circles. Nobody wants to wait for them to get themselves together.

The pitch clock needs to be adjusted. The pick off rules needs to be adjusted. The 3 hitter rule needs to be abolished, that one is just terrible. So is the ghost runner. The rule I actually really like is the bases being bigger. Encourages more running without making it too easy for the runner. I still see guys getting thrown out, but it emboldens them enough to run more. I like that one a lot...
@@g-manjams Yeah but adjustments are fairly easy to make. If we find this year that playoff baseball needs more time, then they can literally just change the rules for next year.
I like the idea of the pitch clock but a tie (or close) game in the later innings not being rushed and allowing tension to build is one of the best things in sports. I don’t want to see a bottom of the 9th in the playoffs get rushed. I wouldn’t mind maybe seeing the pitch clock not being used if the tying run is on deck in the 8th & 9th innings. Just an idea
Baseball, to me, it’s very different as a fan, from regular season to postseason. Regular season, it is a game made for radio. The slow pace and long season are made for story telling and really showcase the abilities of good radio broadcasters. As a fan, you listen all summer long and get to hear all kinds of interesting stories, including about the old days, from the color commentator. Post-season is a different beast. Postseason baseball is great tv. The slow pace again becomes a feature, but instead of for storytelling, it’s for suspense. Some of the most memorable visuals in my sports-watching life are MLB pitchers staring in to get the sign, coming set, and summoning up their focus and energy to make the pitch, on a cold October night. Is baseball slow paced? Yes. But so is golf. So what? It’s not for everyone. How long do cricket matches take? But they still have their devotees. That’s just a little defense of the slower pace. I will say, the points for wanting to shorten the game are not invalid. MLB just needs to understand that suspense and story telling are part of their product too.
It will cost someone a game and people will be pissed. Umpires can be assholes about shit. Umpires will weaponize the pitch clock. In theory I think the pitch clock can be ok but I think the timing is too small and the pickoff attempt rule is stupid.
These rules didn’t need to be added. I’m not a fan of them at all. You want to bring up fan engagement, make it affordable to go to games again. Allow people to buy your streaming service and watch in market games.
I've watched a few games already this year after not having watched regular season in probably ten years. So refreshing the amount of contact and action happening in the games. I don't understand the baseball purists who just want to see guys stand around all day long. You still get long games in this system, just only when there's a lot of offense prolonging innings -- not pitchers just taking forever to deliver the pitch.
thats really it. a lot of people like low scoring games, especially when a pitcher is playing well. plus more action and offense will just destroy small market teams like my rays. probably not this year or next but in a few years definitely.
@@botboi4334 this doesnt destroy pitching though lol. It just makes them deliver the pitch. High end pitchers will still be incredibly difficult to hit.
@@botboi4334 Have ya watched baseball the past 20 years at all? Pitchers go through the lineup twice unless theyre an ace and its over... 6 innings is like a rarity now. What stamina?!
@@botboi4334 Between 1890 and 1980 the average games were along the lines of 2 1/2 hours long. If you go back and watch old games, the pitchers threw pitches on average in around 15 seconds, maybe 20 seconds if the count went deep or after a foul ball. And there were more complete games back then, so I don't think stamina was a problem. Also, batters did not step out nearly as often or for as long. There was no shift. There was more action in the form of hit and runs, bunts, stolen bases and more run scoring rallies, not just homeruns or strikeouts. I would think that type of "small ball" would help small market teams - you don't need the high priced hitters, just guys who can get base hits and know how to manufacture runs the old fashioned way.
Im usually a hockey football basketball guy and It has perked my interest to watch games. Going to spring training games and dbacks games growing up, my biggest gripe was always how slow the game moved.
Well, all of you should go watch a different sport then instead of encouraging them to destroy ours. Men's field hockey and competitive softball move pretty fast, maybe you'd like them?
Thats how it was for over 100 years of baseball history - more hits, hit and runs, bunts, stolen bases and far less pitching changes. So in a way it will make records more like they used to be.
Pitch Clock, don’t mind it The Shift Ban, don’t mind it Base size, don’t mind it This being said, nothing can save baseball until they figure out how to broadcast their games. It is maddening being told I’m out of range for an Atlanta Braves broadcast from Athens a Georgia, an hour’s drive away.
Wdym? I love not being able to watch The Blue Jays because some rando AL team doesn't like the fact that a Canadian wants to watch an away game. That and going to Toronto for a game is doubly expensive cuz I have to actually drive there (please bring back a Montreal franchise)
They need to get rid of the strike zone on the broadcasts, 1 we know what a strike looks like. 2 everyone in the world except the ump knows that wasn't a stike.
I think all of the rule changes are great, except for one. I think banning the shift is ridiculous and stupid. It's a defensive adjustment to an offensive meta that prioritizes power, pull hitting. You wanna stop the shift? Be better at directional hitting. Send a slow grounder through the infield gap and turn it into a double. Do that over and over, and the problem will be solved.
A certain Ted Williams would hit .500 because of all the shifting. It's really more about not trying to get players to change their approach. The hitters won't do it, so MLB helicopter parented in and saved them from the big bad defensive shift.
It's kind of amazing to me the answer to the shift isn't just getting better at batting, idk. Obviously harder than it seems, just goes to show insane these pitchers are too.
Well they could always bunt against the shift, but I don’t know if you’ve ever had to square up a bunt coming from a pitcher only 60’ away, but that shits scary at the upper HS level, let alone what these guys are seeing. And bunting against these pitchers may increase injuries in players Ill prepared to do it. Plus, do you want your $25m/yr player bunting every AB. It just feels like a crappy work around, and that would be boring to watch too.
It's because pitchers actually induce those outcomes by locating and pitch selection, it's not just hitters not being good enough, it's pitching quite frankly being oppressive
The time problem isn't the rules, it's the endless routines of the players. How many times do you have to "touch here touch there, shift your cap" etc.
It will increase artificially and won't mean as much. Is it exciting for a guy to be awarded a sb when the pitcher attempted a third pickoff that didn't get him?
@x jr. there's still the catcher. And pitch outs. Not sure if I'd count a boost in steals as "artificial" in this era since it's already been choked down so much. I just want to see teams run more.
The wbc was a 2 week tournament where there is no pitch clock, bigger bases, pitch/hitter violations, pick off restrictions, or other bullshit rules. The way I see it, it shows that the mlb and the mlb/American fans need to do better. If the average Mexican or Japanese audience can care about a full baseball season and putting their energy into every single second, y’all can too.
Their leagues will likely adopt these rules too, or at least a variation of it. The next WBC will be using these new rules, so if other leagues want their players to be ready for it then presumably make the switch to this.
@@idkbro8470 Well that’s what’s happening. If Japan, DR and the whole rest of the world don’t want their players to be left behind then adopt the new rules
Yes cause baseball needed saving after the league just made the most revenue adjusted for inflation in its 100+ year history just last year. Baseball has been growing with or without these rules. Make the pitch clock 30 seconds and figure out blackouts before anything else is ruined

Watches baseball all day yesterday. It was amazing. More stolen bases more hits. More runs. Action every AB. I could mess with a post 7th inning clock increase in close games. Like within 3 runs
This is all about advertising and TV time and not about the fans. Speeding up the game this way is not improving the game in a way that will bring in new fans. The networks want more hours to serve more content per day. Baseball has always been a chess game and this is detrimental to that. Making these rules are the result of MLB changing the fundamentals of the game. Instead of teaching actual hitting and valuing high average hitters, they taught a type of baseball that wants hitters to use an uppercut swing to inflate home run totals. The steroid era skewed the view of MLB and what the fans wanted moving forward. Lastly the balk rule needs to be just that. The exception they made for Japanese pitchers years ago has been completely detrimental to the game.
I have a few issues with the new rules but generally I think all that needs to be solved is tweaking, such making sure that pitchers don't get too exhausted too quickly with the clock; 15 seconds is a decent amount of time but MLB should probably change it if issues that to occur with it.
these rules are horrible and made by people who have never played baseball and don't know pitching causes the arm a huge amount of stress and is very delicate and that the entire skill of baseball is based on pitching and hitting a ball someone is trying to get you to miss. It's like if they made a clock for golfing. The entire skill is being precise and not just swinging randomly
@@ricky5369 The PGA has rules for this. In secret they calculate the slowest 10 players and make them average 60 seconds per shot over a round, the 10 players are given a warning for being slower than that. Any player taking more than 120 seconds on a shot will pay a fine of $50,000 per shot. Disc golf also has a 30 second time from when you are clear to throw, or you get a penalty stroke and this works fine, and feels fair.
@@coast2coast00 I don't know if the first part was a joke, but I want to say something. I think it would be fine if they made the pitch clock like a minute or something to prevent people from being excessive. But anything less than 30 seconds is making pitchers into throwers. And the people who don't see the difference between pitching and throwing have never pitched before. It's the difference between baseball and slow pitch softball. A pitcher in slow pitch is a person to help get the ball in play, and a baseball pitcher is competing and using skill.
the rules need tweaking but overall i think mlb is headed in the right direction with these new rules. unlike the nfl, whose idea of “evolving” is just picking a new rule to overcomplicate every year, mlb is actively trying to improve the quality of their games and i think sooner or later fans will see that it’s paying off
obviously they will have to tweek rules, or change them completely for the mlb what works in the minors may not work for the mlb. I do not like the 3 pickoff rule it seems unfair, maybe the pitch clock might have an affect but i think that might be something they have to modify. everything else seems ok for now also it seems like the mlb is stacked more in defensive favor so taking away some liberties may work in favor of making games more interesting or higher scoring which may make the game dull seeing 10+ runs on one team every game, we will have to see
Personally, I think the clock should be 18 and 25 seconds. The disengagements should be increased to 3 per AB. Batter timeouts increased to 2 per AB. Today, a strike got called on a batter when a runner on first took too long to get back to first after a foul ball. They need to eliminate that. That's ridiculous.
Games are already 23 minutes shorter and I already feel like a breath of fresh air into the sport, I hope players can stop being dweebasses and comply with the rules that are giving them more fans and more money.
If you want a play lock so damn bad, go watch football or basketball. Baseball is supposed to be less rushed. That's the beauty of the game. If anything, just take it down to 7 innings and leave everything else the same.
I've enjoyed the changes so far. I think a faster game with more regular action is good. I think these changes will mature well when the summer gets here.
I noticed a pleasing change in feel after one game. All they did was address players and their egos and rituals, ffs catch and throw. Once you're conscious that there's a clock you just get in a new rhythm and never think about it, and suddenly you realize that you dont need even the 15 seconds which are alloted. No player in history was who he was statistically because he was allowed to adjust his f'ing helmet for no reason and wave the bat with one hand several times before setting up to hit. That's all horse **** that no one pays to see. It's clear that we don't need all this idle time. It's so nice to force it out for good.
Incoming Rule Changes: 2024 - Two strikes for a strikeout 2025 - Maximum limit of 9 batters per inning 2026 - Infielders cannot move more than 3 feet in any direction to field a ball 2027 - Two outs per inning 2028 - Seven innings per game 2029 - No extra innings. Now a "tied" column in the standings. Hey, these are all rules that will speed up the game just like MLB wants and help with offense a bit.
No, the game got way shorter, which what happened is all stadiums just increased their prices. Further pricing out us poorer folk and will never go to games. Frankly the guys just need to play and stop trying to squeeze everything for what it is. Just play. Batters don't need to get up there, adjust gloves each time, adjust bat, feel themselves, fix pants, so on. Same goes for pitchers. Just hit and throw
Just add a rule where they time pitchers throughout the game, remove the clock, and at the end tally the total time pitched (TTP lol) and the team with the lower TTP gets 3 bonus points lol. That'll speed things up 😄
Commercial breaks HAVE to be factored in as well. There's a drastic and direct correlation between the increase in game length and commercials. And I'm THRILLED that the shift is more or less gone. I hated it.
They already cut down commercial breaks. A clock immediately starts when the inning ends at 2:40. 99 percent of the time the inning starts on that time.
The answer is simple: The game was perfect, and if you weren’t a fan find another sport to watch. Baseball was beautiful because you had to compete (offense and defense) and couldn’t be saved by a clock. Speed up the game? Maybe less in-between inning bullshit contests. The same people that are supporting a clock and these new rules probably think a complete game 1-0 shutout by a pitcher is boring and they are the real problem
These were actually great changes and brought back more fans. There's way more people watching baseball than before. The comments talking about how this ruined baseball also said they haven't watched Baseball in years is hilarious to me. They already stopped watching and are complaining about changes. The NFL and NBA are constantly changing rules to adapt, the MLB should've followed suit a long time ago if not for these "fans" who stopped watching but are vocal about change.
I followed baseball semi-seriously 8 or so years ago but for some reason I stopped watching sports altogether for a couple of years. One of my coworkers who’s a baseball nut started telling me earlier this year about all the new rules that I missed, then he told me about Ohtani and I figured I should see for myself what’s up with all that. We caught a game during our shift and I fell in love with the sport again. It just felt like great timing to get back into the sport. I don’t care what oldhead purists say, the pitch clock and extra innings rule are one of the most seamless, simple yet dynamic rules changes they could’ve brought to modernize the game. This year I’ve watched more hours of baseball than any other form of content aside from youtube. All of that is in great part thanks to the new dynamic rules that were added.
What a quality video. Your speed and succinctness while sharing a ton of relevant information earns you a sub. I’m a judgemental POS and I’m impressed with you. Thanks.
What true fans have actually asked for any rule changes?? Not one that I know of they must be asking NBA fans or people who don't know shit about MLB. FRManfred.
Vendors and concession stands were not taken into account when speeding up the game. The game was sped up for tv (which most can't even see because of blackout rules), but the speed of the game takes away from the in the stadium experience. In my opinion.
@@malfunkshin873 There is absolutely nothing exciting about a hitter that steps out of the box, unvelcros his batting gloves, adjusts his fingers in them, revelcros his batting gloves, readjusts the stickum on his bat, taps the bat to his helmet, steps into the box, scuffs the ground, and taps the ground a few times with the bat, and then is ready for the pitch. And then he does that, without fail, after EVERY pitch. There's absolutely nothing exciting about a pitcher who waits 30 seconds doing nothing, nothing at all, before a pitch because he wants to bore the hitter, throw off his timing, and "slow the game down" so he can be in control. Nothing exciting about that at all. I've been a baseball traditionalist and I have hated new rules like the DH, the ghost runner, the juiced balls, maybe even the bigger bases. But the pitch clock is a wonderful, wonderful change. Games had gotten slower and slower over time. It's about time they made this change.
I though the same was going to happen but after the first three weeks of the season the average time has decreased a lot, I hate the shift banning though
Some are already speculating that the pitch clock might be connected to increased Tommy John surgeries, i.e. the pitch clock hurts pitchers, by having less downtime between each pitch. I don' think this is the case. But it's still to early to say, anyway. And if it turns out to be the case, perhaps new pitching styles will develop, or things like the opener will become more common.
Literally haven't heard anybody of note say they hate the rule changes. The only people complaining about them are "content creators" fishing for views
No problem with any of the new rules EXCEPT for the shift. Pull hitters just need to learn how to go the other way sometimes. That's like penalizing defensive backs because the QB keeps throwing into triple coverage.
The shift got ridiculous in recent years and used far more than ever before. It didnt even look like baseball a lot of the time, more like slowpitch softball. In addition pitching is better than its ever been so saying just hit it the other way is a dumb argument when hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports. There's defensive restrictions in football too. All the shift restriction is doing is making guys play the position they are intended to and making defense important again. I think its a great rule
@@Fly-The-W It's been awhile but we were taught to "hit the ball where they ain't". I guess modern hitters aren't smart enough or talented enough to do that when necessary, so they need extra rules to force fielders to stay in certain areas. That's just sad.
@@SouthernGreyShark it's sad that you can't understand that it was WAY overused. Plus you gotta be trolling that they aren't talented 😂 c'mon dude. Defense wasn't even going off intuition or anything. They were told where to stand by a group of analysts and didn't even think for themselves. Just look at a card in your pocket and move where you are told. That's not baseball. Now defensive ability is important again and they actually have to make plays. They are playing the position that was always intended. How is that a bad thing for baseball?? It's going back to how it was traditionally played
@@Fly-The-W Outfielders use computer analytics just like hitters and pitchers do. Baseball is a game of adjustments. If the entire defense is playing you to pull and the other side is wide ass open, who's fault is it that the hitter won't/can't hit the ball to that huge open space? Again, it's like an NFL defense sees that your QB throws most of his passes to the right side and is far more productive doing so, do they roll their coverages to the right side. Duhhhh. You don't see the NFL saying that you can't do that do you?
@@SouthernGreyShark Theres plenty of things in NFL on defense that you cant do. Restrictions on positioning and others. You cant compare football to baseball, they are completely different. All im saying is that guys have to actually play the position they are supposed to be in. Why is that a bad thing???
The new rules are not saving baseball. They are trying to alter the rules so that people who are not currently fans will start watching baseball, but they are ruining it for classic fans that title is either not thought out very well or the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.
If changing baseball for the better means seeing most fans out and upsetting the rest, then maybe you need to reevaluate the situation. Pretty much nobody agrees. You can't just say things and have them be true just because you want to argue and be right. Baseball doesn't need to become a different sport. It needs to strengthen the sport it already was. Siding with executives who just want to make more money and deliver less experience is a losing battle. Good luck with all of this.
The games slowed down in the first place so the league could show commercials and make money. Now, the games sped up so the league can “make money”. Who is the economist for the MLB and why did they convince MLB to do this. I can’t believe there’s already a change to the pace of play rules that slow down the game 😂😂. People running the game never played it themselves
I dislike the limited amount of times a pitcher can throw over to first. You might as well give the batter second after reaching first. This was done so the slow and countless replays can be implemented. No auto walk! Pitch to the batter! Much is lost as to what can happen. Stop the use of oversized sliding gloves. If you can't steal a base with regular batting gloves, don't steal.
I may be in the minority, but I enjoy great pitching more than just about any other aspect of the game. When I went to minor league games last season with the pitch clock, it seemed as if the quality of pitching went down... it was as if the pitcher just remembered he left his oven on and wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. I hope this is not how the pitch clock impacts the majors.
Agreed! Hitters have, by statistical average comparison, become better than pitcher (statistically, walks, strike outs, innings pitched.....) the pitch clock further diminishes the pitchers ability to keep the hitter guessing what pitch is next, keeping a runner on base in check, using the rosin bag, prepping the mound.....think Mark Fidrich, wiping sweat off your brow in stiflingly heat, concentration on the catchers glove.....Sorry, this gives advantage to the hitter, who is not as 2:32 active unless he swings, and how much energy does that take compared to every pitch the pitcher throws. How about foul balls....crate a rule to even the challenge between hitter and pitcher....3 foul balls....your OUT!
Apparently you're in the minority for enjoying baseball. It should just be montages of the best plays back to back for 20 minutes and then the season is over, because that's the kind of 'fan' they're trying to appeal to. Pitcher injuries are probably going to skyrocket too by making them pitch games faster and under more stress- trying to throw your hardest without being able to reset or take your time is going to lead to some messed up mechanics that will cause strains, sprains and tears over time. Even without being rushed this happens when you force the human body to throw at maximum velocity thousands of times a year. I imagine they'll repeal the rule when they realize they're spending $1.5B/year on pitchers that cant even play.
Fans are old, and the game is boring. I went to a game and stood up to cheer. The people behind ask me to sit. And then they called security. So I told them, baseball will be the new hockey very soon. Was I lying.
I watched baseball as a kid and it bore the hell out of me. I love the game itself; I played softball for 15 years and all my daughters play too. This season, I just randomly started watching again and immediately noticed the pitch clock. The game pacing is sooooo much better. If they remove that pitch clock, the MLB is dead in the water.
This is the MLB version of going woke and trying to appeal to "fans" that don't understand the game itself. Absolutely good for the game if they're trying to phase out fans that actually understand how it's supposed to be played as watching the WBC was far more entertaining than this.
Played through college on a scholarship. Playing with your cup and adjusting your batting gloves after every pitch isnt playing the game and theres nothing to understand. Glad this needed to be explained to you. You wanna watch guys play with their groins go to your local club.
There was teeth-gnashing when replay was implemented, when the DH became universal, and when you could no longer take out the catcher after what happened to Buster Posey. All of those changes were correct. These changes were not put in place overnight. The pitch clock has been in the minors for years. The rest of the players have had the entire off-season knowing it was coming. The batter's box rule has been on the books, it just wasn't enforced and became egregiously abused. I lived through a season of watching Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, and Jonathan Papelbon do any and everything on the mound but pitch and five hour games ARE NOT FUN. Get in the box. Throw the ball. The only thing I think is a tad unnecessary is doing away with the shift- seriously, if you're going to stack guys so extreme in one small part of the field, BUNT. Just for the entertainment value of watching them scramble. But all of these changes came about because of DAYS worth of dead time during the season. If it wasn't so egregiously and regularly abused, it wouldn't have had to be fixed.
@@christopherboccuzzi8761 No, thanks. I liked the game the way it was, not this bullshit destroying of it now. You want a babied sport? Go watch soccer.

banning shift and bigger bases stuff i totally agree, it makes the sport less about numbers and calculations and more about risk vs reward the pitch clock and limiting time outs/how much you can be out of the batter box is just heresy to me, used to play baseball so i know what im saying when it gets very stressful to be reminded of such stupid rules every other time, balks overall are already stupid enough with how a slight movement of your arm will trigger the umps, now you have to be aware of not making a balk while pitching fast and not screw up, as a batter, you have all this pitcher mental games of them working up the clock as much as possible + the fact that you aren't allowed to even get out of the box to move your cold legs from there to even watch the 3rd base coach or the bench coaches instructions. to me this is the new "unwritten rules" where people go apeshit for stupid shit that rather than adding to the sport it takes away from it, sure, you cannot do this weird pitching motions that are clearly exagerated, but cmon, shit like those 3 balks in a row should NEVER happen, it just amuses me how how they blame all this time lost on the game and not on random bs like checking pitchers for foreigh substances when something as simple as watching patterns or telling the umps via replay room that the pitcher my have a substance would cut away more than just making the pitchers hurry up more hits = more rallies = more runs = innings take longer...lets take out a strategy that makes runners less likely to happen! what a great logic am i right? i personally don't like shifts since as it has been said, it takes away a lot from pull hitters, but banning it with the excuse of cutting game time?...idk chief. this was all my opinion, feel free to disagree respectfully random yt commenters
Some instances of pitching are just RIDICULOUSLY slow and require this change. Like a video I saw like first week of Spring Training that showed a strikeout happening on one side with a pitch clock, while the other side had an at bat with no pitch clock that didn't even finish 2 pitches before the strikeout was done.
I might be wrong but I’m not sure if the shifting rule was presented as another way of cutting down time, rather just to make hitting more entertaining and frequent. If it was portrayed as a way to cut time then yeah that’s dumb, but I think overall it’s a great new rule. I’m excited to see more hits, especially if I’m going to see a game irl. Last time was fun but a boring ass game lmao.
@@dungeonmaster6292 sorry bro, the game was old and freaking stale. This has bee the most entertaining and best opening day in ages. Cards-Jays had 33 hits and 19 runs took 3 hours. I disagree. I’m my opinion, if people have complaints about the length of games, they can go kick rocks. Find another sport that caters to your short attention span. This mindset is indicative of the age we live in with instant gratification constantly at our fingertips resulting in short attention span and a desensitization to the effect our brains need constant stimulation. These rule changes had nothing to do with improving the actual game of baseball. Clearly the MLB did this in an attempt to generate more money, and that doesn’t sit right with me personally.

If the catcher put down a "1" but he wanted to throw a "3" then he would "swipe" with
his glove 2 times. It was very efficient and didn't require any technology at all.
Greinke on occasion will hand signal or even scream the signs to his catcher with the batter looking at him.

Technology that kills human exchange of thoughts is not good for us. Speeding up the game is good, but having a computer system that essentially is a one way form of communication makes baseball even more individualistic than it already is.

Overall I'm interested to watch the impact of the rule changes over the course of the season. The only issue I have at the moment is MLB going after bat boys, that's just not cool.
Bat boys need to be on point, no more lazy focus
@@jrick5322😂
The should all be like tennis sideline kids. Also they should be kids and not fat adults who tear their ACLs tripping.
This is way better than the new rule explanations all the RSNs are airing.
Baseball is in its own horror movie rn
Loved your Midsommar video!!!
Long run there will be far more fans in stadium so the revenue at concession stands will be more than made up. Attendance has been dropping like crazy
Nobody practices in the big leagues anymore. Maybe once a month a couple guys will take some gbs/fbs but they don’t even use fungus now, the ball is shot out of a handheld cannon (dead serious). If you’re referring to batting practice though, every mlb park has always opened for BP.
@@PeopleRTellingme geeze I didn't think it was that bad. Thanks for the info.
I understand the MLBs reasoning for the rule, but if you suck at hitting one direction and they put a shift on you, maybe it’s time to learn how to hit the other way
Well said, it’s a masterful tactic. Either people like baseball or not. This won’t help the sport it’s for tv station time slots lol
If the opposing pitcher is throwing pitches down and away to have you either hit a ground ball or strikeout swinging, hit the ball the opposite way.
Absolutely agree
So, a bomb would really have to be a BOMB! I am ok with that. So many times I see a hitter put one over the fence but when I saw the swing my first thought was no way that is going out.
@@robertcross5794
Especially in places like Colorado. Might need to move the fences back 20 feet there lol
Tell that to the Yankees.
Stolen bases are already way way way up this year
Someone give me a compelling reason why should shell out hundreds of dollars to have my family attend a shortened game!? Such a shame
Yet you still get 3 to 5 minutes in between every half inning for commercials😂😂😂
@johnwayne9828 yeah, why wouldn't you? It takes time for teams to get into position and ready for the next inning.
@@ahokay3119 yall bitching about "down time", meanwhile players gotta stand around waiting for ok from upstairs to start play again because of the commercial breaks. Players are ready when they get in position on the field, but hafta stand around waiting for commercial breaks to end.

@@johnwayne9828 One team gets out of position, while another team gets into position and stretches/warms up, after a half-inning of relative inactivity on the bench. You're just wrong, and you're salty about it.
The rule to force batters to stay in the box is a good rule.
The problem is not that they are a foot or two outside, but because some tend to wonder around in circles. Nobody wants to wait for them to get themselves together.

I agree these rules are going to turn out to be amazing but the extra innings "ghost runner" rule is still god awful
The new rules suck I have no interest in watching the game I grew up watching and playing the game looks like rushed garbage now
Yup. It’s terrible. I hate it.
@@g-manjams Yeah but adjustments are fairly easy to make. If we find this year that playoff baseball needs more time, then they can literally just change the rules for next year.
@@santumi2298 they need to be changed now...we can see how they negatively effect the game already. Make a change at the Allstar break.
and yet the still DONT allow the one guy who calls balls and strikes to see the tech that indicates if its a ball or strike. Its BEYOND stupid.
No! The beginning of the slippery slope.
Nope!!!
@@jamesdrake142 very good point.

Then they better not forget the rules when the game is on the line.
Give them bread and circus, and they will never revolt.

@@nicklazzaro5055 generally speaking yes. however their stamina will likely be lower than usual because they are having to throw pitches so quickly
Yeap. Can you imagine if basketball have no shot clock or timer to hike the ball in football?

More hits, more stolen bases, more runs scored..... This will impact pitchers records quite a bit. I'm definitely not a fan of these new rules

This being said, nothing can save baseball until they figure out how to broadcast their games.
There are plenty of free streams on the interwebs. Their loss
@@PAGoTribe1963 David Ortiz’s comment about the fines related to pitch clock rules sums that up perfectly.
@@bluecollarboys6294A baseball team should be in the business of winning by whatever means works best and who cares if it’s “entertaining” or not?
It's because pitchers actually induce those outcomes by locating and pitch selection, it's not just hitters not being good enough, it's pitching quite frankly being oppressive
Agreed.... Would have loved to see Barry Bonds learn to hit to the opposite field and mic-drop the bat.
Americans don't hit for contact. They hit to score. International baseball doesn't have this problem
The time problem isn't the rules, it's the endless routines of the players. How many times do you have to "touch here touch there, shift your cap" etc.
they are addressing two issues though. The length of the game, yes, but the rule changes (aside from the clock) are aimed at creating more action.

Well to be fair. Japan's season is much shorter at 144 games, not the 162 of MLB.

Baseball is so under rated. Its 1000x better than football. Nothing beats the walk off home run!
I have a few issues with the new rules but generally I think all that needs to be solved is tweaking, such making sure that pitchers don't get too exhausted too quickly with the clock; 15 seconds is a decent amount of time but MLB should probably change it if issues that to occur with it.
you definitely have never pitched before
these rules are horrible and made by people who have never played baseball and don't know pitching causes the arm a huge amount of stress and is very delicate and that the entire skill of baseball is based on pitching and hitting a ball someone is trying to get you to miss.

@@coast2coast00 I don't know if the first part was a joke, but I want to say something. Well said. The kinks will be worked out but this is way better.
obviously they will have to tweek rules, or change them completely for the mlb what works in the minors may not work for the mlb. I do not like the 3 pickoff rule it seems unfair, maybe the pitch clock might have an affect but i think that might be something they have to modify. everything else seems ok for now
also it seems like the mlb is stacked more in defensive favor so taking away some liberties may work in favor of making games more interesting or higher scoring which may make the game dull seeing 10+ runs on one team every game, we will have to see
Personally, I think the clock should be 18 and 25 seconds. The disengagements should be increased to 3 per AB. Batter timeouts increased to 2 per AB.
Today, a strike got called on a batter when a runner on first took too long to get back to first after a foul ball. They need to eliminate that. That's ridiculous.

I've enjoyed the changes so far. I think a faster game with more regular action is good. I think these changes will mature well when the summer gets here.
I noticed a pleasing change in feel after one game. All they did was address players and their egos and rituals, ffs catch and throw. Im a baseball traditionalist. But I just don't understand how the game has gotten so long. Seems the changes are good from what I can tell so far
Commercial breaks are longer and changing pitchers so often is a big factor.
I won’t be surprised if they come up with a rule limiting outfield shifts, dividing the outfield into thirds based off the lines of 2nd base
Incoming Rule Changes:
2024 - Two strikes for a strikeout
2025 - Maximum limit of 9 batters per inning
2026 - Infielders cannot move more than 3 feet in any direction to field a ball
2027 - Two outs per inning

Only complaint I heard today from visitors to Oracle Stadium was that they went to get a beer and missed a bunch of action because it moves so quick.
Vendors and concession stands were not taken into account when speeding up the game. The game was sped up for tv (which most can't even see because of blackout rules), but the speed of the game takes away from the in the stadium experience. In my opinion.

I've been a baseball traditionalist and I have hated new rules like the DH, the ghost runner, the juiced balls, maybe even the bigger bases. But the pitch clock is a wonderful, wonderful change. Games had gotten slower and slower over time. It's about time they made this change.
Love the new changes! The game of baseball is now played as it once was. ACTION, not computer generated boring game that had little to watch.
Wouldn’t all these things that increase offense in turn make the games longer again.
Common sense has entered the chat.
I though the same was going to happen but after the first three weeks of the season the average time has decreased a lot, I hate the shift banning though
The pitch clock isn't saving baseball. Catering rules to people who don't watch baseball. 🤦🏻♂️
Hate all the new rules idk I just really appreciated and loved the game for what it was honestly these rules have me felling hella sad/angry lately
If these people have complaints about the length of games, they can cry about it. Find another sport that caters to your short attention span.
I understand and agree that the game is too long but at the same time baseball is baseball and a lot of these things go against the game.
Literally haven't heard anybody of note say they hate the rule changes. The only people complaining about them are "content creators" fishing for views
Just coming back from the cubs victory 4-0, and I think these rules are good, except for bigger bases.
yessir les go cubs
I agree totally, the bases could've been made a tad bigger but not the size they made em. They're like 3X size 💀
These changes ARE strengthening the sport it already was. That's why these are good changes.
The games slowed down in the first place so the league could show commercials and make money. Now, the games sped up so the league can “make money”. Who is the economist for the MLB and why did they convince MLB to do this. I can’t believe there’s already a change to the pace of play rules that slow down the game 😂😂. People running the game never played it themselves
lmfao for reallll. The longer the game the more ad's you get to put out.
All I can think of is how Nomar wouldn’t have lasted 2 ABs with these rules😂
Amen
Are you sure?
@@booradley6832 agreed
I think I've only watched 1 full baseball game in my life but these videos are truly fascinating. I wish you would cover hockey too.
Love your channel as 65 year old man, thank you for being consistent
If you're blocking the plate, you deserve to get rocked
@@joegadberry2221 Yeah, no. Keep up with the times.
@@christopherboccuzzi8761 nah I'm good
@@joegadberry2221 Exactly.
@@christopherboccuzzi8761 No, thanks. I liked the game the way it was, not this bullshit destroying of it now. You want a babied sport? Go watch soccer.
I pay for MLB network and can't watch half the games I want to because of blackout restrictions due to bullshit streaming services. THEN if I want to go to a game I have to take out a small loan and find parking for under 100 dollars which is impossible
banning shift and bigger bases stuff i totally agree, it makes the sport less about numbers and calculations and more about risk vs reward
the pitch clock and limiting time outs/how much you can be out of the batter box is just heresy to me, used to play baseball so i know what im saying when it gets very stressful to be reminded of such stupid rules every other time, balks overall are already stupid enough with how a slight movement of your arm will trigger the umps, now you have to be aware of not making a balk while pitching fast and not screw up, as a batter, you have all this pitcher mental games of them working up the clock as much as possible + the fact that you aren't allowed to even get out of the box to move your cold legs from there to even watch the 3rd base coach or the bench coaches instructions.
to me this is the new "unwritten rules" where people go apeshit for stupid shit that rather than adding to the sport it takes away from it, sure, you cannot do this weird pitching motions that are clearly exagerated, but cmon, shit like those 3 balks in a row should NEVER happen, it just amuses me how how they blame all this time lost on the game and not on random bs like checking pitchers for foreigh substances when something as simple as watching patterns or telling the umps via replay room that the pitcher my have a substance would cut away more than just making the pitchers hurry up
more hits = more rallies = more runs = innings take longer...lets take out a strategy that makes runners less likely to happen! what a great logic am i right? i personally don't like shifts since as it has been said, it takes away a lot from pull hitters, but banning it with the excuse of cutting game time?...idk chief.
this was all my opinion, feel free to disagree respectfully random yt commenters
The normies will never understand what you're saying. Pitch clock is for them and they will not stick around to watch this game
@@dungeonmaster6292 sorry bro, the game was old and freaking stale. This has bee the most entertaining and best opening day in ages. Cards-Jays had 33 hits and 19 runs took 3 hours. Ive seen tons of yankees red sox games have 3 runs and 4 hits that go 4.5. It not about being a fan or a a former hs baseball player yelling at the sky, the product on the field will be better and thats all that matters.
@@soxlife6782yeah man, the slightly faster pitch times and 5 points of additional batting average is going to just be absolutely crazy. The bases are even 3 inches bigger, I’m so excited!
The only new rule I wanted was Robo-ump, and didn't get it.
When AI gets better to a level of people see them as human but better than human I think it'll happen. I think average fan thinks these weird machines are fake somehow.
I don't think it is at a point where it can make 100% correct calls.
@@skrr18 Not 100% correct is still better than Angel Hernandez
its coming.
@@skrr18 Theres stories on Real Sports. Theyre way more accurate than human umps. They still use a human behind the plate, theres just a light in cf that tells that ump behind the plate if its a ball or strike. They still need the umps to make safe and out calls so theyll always be there and MLB will want to make it look like the umps are calling the game anyway
Stopped watching MLB over ten years ago because it was getting supergay even then. Now, even more reasons to never go back. RIP baseball, I miss you.
I like the three-batter minimum rule, and maybe the bigger bases.....but not so much the other changes. I think the ghost runner is something out of my street-ball games as a child. I do not like the new pacing with the pitch clock (too short), nor the two-throws-to-first rules. How about limiting the time between innings?.....Oh, that's right - the rich-rich-RICH owners need more TV ads to make more money.
