Good series - When I was young and first on my own Chicken Hotdogs and Ramen Noodles without the seasoning was my go to meal. It was cheap although not very nutritious but it fed me. And, back when eggs were cheap I made a kitchen sink mock quiche with whatever cheeses, veggies were in my refrigerator . I added ham when I had it and it was a real staple to my meal planning. I grew up on a farm so dairy, meat and vegs were plentiful. But I can say that my single mother fed us tons of times with no vegetables. Something she made for us that I still make to this day, for my own kids, is chicken and stars condensed soup, mixed with a very tiny bit of milk or water, and some lemon juice. I just want to comment as I feel you may have been getting some negativity lately. Your kids genuine reactions to your food is so cute and feels very real. I have a 14 year old son who loves my cooking and I can tell when the reaction is real…although slightly suspicious on the fainting lol. I’m Canadian so cannot relate to these grocery prices, as we pay at least three times more, but love the inspiration. Thank you and your husband for doing what you do. You guys are super cute.
@@SouthernFrugalMomma This was one of my favorite faints ever. 😆 He just drops out of the shot entirely and you have the perfect reaction. I’m an actress, and I’m just saying… you might have a theatre kid on your hands.
I make this dish but I also add a can of chilli beans in chilli sauce and onion and it tastes like a chilli dog. I have learned so much from you I love you and your family. I appreciate you.
I love your chattering on. Weinies (hotdogs to others) in my family were a treat whenever served and even cold out of the bag. I miss them because I am old and on a low, low sodium diet. I now search for fancy this and that sausage to find a low sodium alternative that I can occasionally eat without getting swollen ankles. I miss those weinies. I suggest UA-camr atomic shrimp for the master bits of vegetable buying to save money on a food challenge. He is in the UK and deals with pounds not dollars but I love watching him too.
We make this alot. On 3 dollar , I would for .98 cents get tomatoes cubes for soup. Discount bread is .57 cents. You have a little over a dollar left the deli will slice a dollar worth of cheese and grill cheese and soup. One of our favorite. I know you will do good. Black beans and salsa and tortillas and fry. Yummy. Great series. Have a blessed day.
How many times will people keep talking about vegetables when you go over the whole premise of these videos every time? And they suggest things that you already mention in the video as though they've had a revelation. I don't get it. We go many meals without veggies. I usually forget to buy them. Or if I have some in the freezer or in a can, I forget to heat them until everything else is done and then I'm not going to put the rest on hold for that. Plus my youngest daughter won't eat any vegetables. I've tried a lot in many ways. She won't even eat things she grows in her own garden. That was THE trick that everyone said should work. Nope, she won't even eat the rest of the meal on her plate if a vegetable has been on the plate. She's very difficult. She has a very limited diet. She makes herself a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and bowls of cereal. If she doesn't want what we're having she has to find something else. I'm not making a whole other meal for her. The rest of us have been loving your recipes. Thanks for the great series. I will be looking forward to seeing the rest. Your taste testers are awesome. Love to your family!
You are right that I suggested broccoli before I finished the video. My bad. However, I don't get how adding broccoli instead of hot dogs goes against the premise. The cheese has protein and bulk in both the macaroni and the cheese. I just was suggesting broccoli because it would add another nutritious element to the meal. I am a little confused why so many seem repulsed by the idea of adding vegetables. I don't meal any disrespect to Brooke and her amazing talent at whipping up a meal out of nothing. I love her, her family and her videos. I was just innocently trying to add a suggestion for those who do want vegetables. Btw....my youngest was the same way about vegetables and I would do similar thing Brooke does with Colin. I would just take out some of the Mac and cheese before adding the broccoli or peas or whatever. I get where you are coming from. I just wanted to offer another option. I really am sorry if that offended you somehow.
@@BergenholtzChannel you didn't offend me in any way. And your suggestion doesn't go against the premise. It's all of those that say she should have a vegetable when she says that she's just making something that isn't necessarily what she recommends feeding a family for every meal. She repeats that she does understand that vegetables are important but that it's ok to have a meal or two without them when you are short on funds. I do leave some ingredients out of things for my youngest daughter. I'm learning to adapt but she won't eat chicken, beef, turkey, bacon, beans, ham (pretty much any meat or bean). She also doesn't like vegetables or fruit. She eats pasta (with butter and salt or cheese), pizza, cereal, oatmeal, eggs, french fries (the only way she eats potatoes and only if they're skinny and not too 'potatoey' as she says) and cheese oh shell eat ice cream and some cookies. It's really difficult. I know that this too shall pass but it's been a rough few years.
Do you use Raman noodles 🍜 🤔. Loving ❤ this series. My go to is potatoes, green beans and smoked sausage 😋. After I boil the potatoes and drain off the water to the beans I add butter and dump and heat and go.
Yes that is what it is when you have something as a kid all the time because of cost and you had it so much you can’t stand it as an adult! That’s me with ziti and Ragu sauce we ate it many times a week! When I make something like that now it has to have cheese and veggies or meat for my hubby 😊
Nothing wrong with any kind of pasta 😊 I would have picked up a tomato and added afterwards ( diced up). But I love tomato, I know not everyone does; and it would have kept you within budget. Love your energy ❤
@@SouthernFrugalMomma love that you seem to be genuine, true to yourself. I appreciate the truth and honesty as much as your cheap meal ideas. Keep 'em coming. @Southern Frugal Momma
I'm so late to this party! But I think you're so dang adorable! And I love your recipes, too! Some of them are very familiar, like this one. We call it mac 'n' nickels. =)
My husband and Dad love "dump it in there soup" from leftovers in the fridge. One hit wonders. I will never, ever eat again the soup or spaghetti sauce my mom made from leftover meatloaf. I do make a soup from a dab of ground beef and whatever I have on hand. It's the spice cabinet that shines in this one. I have 5 kids. Only one will not eat everything. He'll be ok. He is now a great cook himself.
One of my favorites is to make chicken and rice with frozen mixed veggies.. I make a big pot then I will make chicken fried rice.. it's delicious and cheap goes a long way
This is great! Anyone that would want to complain they wouldn't feed this to their kids- I'd hate to be their child! Lighten up! Nutrition is important- but the memories of your mumma fixing you something special like hotdog mac- that's priceless! Your kids will remember that. Make menories- not rules xx
We had problems with the cheese drying on the noodles. To stop that we added a little oil or butter or milk. If we were in the mood for a little spice we added a little generic rotel.
We eat butter and garlic noodles. Super cheap and fills the tummy. Hash is another. 1/4 lb of ground beef and diced potatoes. Use water instead of broth to cook, then thicken. We like ours on buttered bread, but we'll eat it plain for a real cheap supper.
My dad grew up very poor. He has bad memories of being hungry and only having the veggies they grew in their garden to eat. He ate so much of them that in his adult life he swore them all off. Literally will not touch a veggie now except potatoes! He’s 63 now! So as a result we never really had veggies as kids - I still don’t love them but I make myself eat them now. Bologna and cheese sandwiches, hotdogs ect we’re all staples as a child but now I won’t touch bologna.
When I was super broke 21 year old I would buy chicken livers which are normally under 3$ a container , a bag of sweet potatoes and a bag of kale. Made a hash and lived on it for 3 days at a time. I got in the best shape on my life with this diet and lifting weights. Chicken liver is now my go to lunch before shark week because it helps with iron levels.
Hi Brooke. Went my local Aldi today in Fayetteville NC. I haven't been in quite a long time, but from what I looked at I was pleased. Especially with my 99 cent hot dogs🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I just wanna tell you how much I am loving your channel. I'm a work from home mama so my meals gotta be quick. And honey let me tell you these meals you be making are quick easy and fun. I made your cheesy pasta and it was really good honey. I will definitely make that in rotation. Thanks for making these videos.
I made a box of mac & cheese Friday I forgot I didn't have butter or milk. I thought of you Brooke and saved a cup of pasta water. Oh my goodness it was so much creamier than with milk and butter. I will only use pasta water from now on❤
Super cheap meal: corn dog casserole 😂 Two boxes of jiffy corn bread mix and a pack of hotdogs cut up in small discs. Combine all of the ingredients together and bake. Then each person can top theirs with ketchup or mustard. I found the jiffy for $0.50 cents each a little while back and the hotdogs for $0.87(great sale!) so the whole meal cost $1.87! Heck yes! To round off the meal you could easily make some homemade fries or do a veggie of some kind. Sounds a little silly but it works! I can’t buy already made corn dogs for that price!
Haha. That song "I Don't Wanna Know" brings back memories from my younger years! Gomer Pyle! LOL Wonder how many people that watch your video had to Google him! You crack me up with the Aldi pronunciation! Ky is so cute!! And you and Braden dancing was hilarious. I love how your kids all have distinct personalities. Awesome video!
I love this channel! I look forward to every new video you and Dusty make! I was born in Oklahoma but raised in southern California. I miss fried okra.
I actually like the idea of different size shells or different shapes. It gives it more interest and makes it more fun for kids. It helps with the illusion of not being broke.
That looks delicious, and thanks for the ideas of using a bit of pasta water to stretch the cheese sauce and cooking the hot dog coins until crispy. Thanks, Brooke!
That looks delicious! I am loving this series. Keep it up. My childhood meal that I cannot eat is chuck roast, potatoes and carrots. Have a marvelous Monday and be blessed always, Brooke & Co.! xoxo
We ate a lot of roast when I was growing up and the thing I cannot eat now is mashed potatoes I won't even fix it. I still fix roast and carrots no potatoes I have egg noodles
As an adult it’s hilarious that I used to think I was the picky child. My dad has confirmed that I was his least picky eater and still am anytime we get together as adults, but I too despise beef and vegetable soup. I don’t know what it is I just can’t stand it. And I love lots of other soups.
Can of peas would have been good in it...I think I want this for lunch 😂. I have an idea instead of buying a bag of shells buy a box of gv shells and powdered cheese for the same price and mix it with the velveta style box for added flavor
If one is that broke between paydays there are many food banks giving food thru truck give aways, churches that distribute etc. I volunteer at two then pick up from others for seniors that live in my mobile home park. There is so much food waste in our country one should never hesitate to use them to feed their families. Here in CA you just go to a Food Bank Map on the Internet ours ask for your zip code then they bring up all of those close address and time. Today we had to throw out three big boxes of bread many were $4. loaves.
I just love how she keeps trying to show people who are poor how to shop at Aldi... and it never quite works out. Walmart is the broke budget store along side Dollartree and Dollar General.
It’s so funny how we’re all different. I live for beef soup and stew while I really don’t Mexican food (that’s my “thing that I don’t like that others love item).
Brooke, when I bought my stove, about 8-9 years ago and it's EXACTLY like yours!! Anywhoo, I was told that the large burner on the front right is actually a canning burner!
Hi Brooke this is Sue, my grandpa and my dad use to make this and l do now as well, l love it, l just call it Tomato Stew, You take the hot dogs like you do cut them into coins, 1 large onion, some minced garlic or garlic powder if you don't have the minced, and 2 large cans of diced tomato's, you can saute your diced onions if you want, but don't have to, so, put in the onions, tomatoes, cut up weiners, and garlic, and simmer for a good hour, you can add some italian seasoning or oregano if you want, and if you have some garlic bread or fresh bread for dipping, it is an old fashion comfort food as well as a stretch you budget meal, and also freezes well. Hope you might try it on your gang. Maybe you could make your memaw's soup one day,
My mom used to only get canned veg ( corn, pras, green beans and spinach). We rarely had fresh veg. Often mom mixed in peas with macaroni and hotdogs. Not my fav but it covered all the food groups. Thank you for doing these vids. It is really great for people to be aware of food insecurity.
We love fried hot dogs and mac and cheese. I think I would have seen if I could have gotten a small can of peas and put in it, that's one way we like ours too. And yes brocc would have been awesome too. Thanks so much for sharing.
I love The Golden Girls! In high school my best friend and I would watch them after school. I named my daughter Sophia after Estelle Getty's character.
We do this with a bag of broccoli and tuna or canned chicken instead of hot dogs. The broccoli we will microwave and then chop finely. It would have been around the same price. Or can add a can of peas to yours would have a been great.
Broccoli YUCK! Oops sorry! I think of it like you do soups. Cheap side dish, egg noodles, then add a can of cream of chicken or mushroom soup. I add a little butter & milk but pasta water would work too! My kids loved it.
@@BergenholtzChannel I use a lot of vegetables. Just not broccoli. Picky, frozen peas in some & canned in others, not fresh. Many times I grind up to add to sauces. It works for me!

😂 I hope he’s joking on all that fainting lol! Thank you so so so much!
@@SouthernFrugalMomma This was one of my favorite faints ever. 😆 He just drops out of the shot entirely and you have the perfect reaction. I’m an actress, and I’m just saying… you might have a theatre kid on your hands.
I love these videos. Such an uplifting and inspirational take on a difficult situation. And you’re adorable as always.
I make this dish but I also add a can of chilli beans in chilli sauce and onion and it tastes like a chilli dog. I have learned so much from you I love you and your family. I appreciate you.
Even though I eat depression meals (I enjoy them), by following your pantry pulls, frugal shopping tips & meals I've saved so many more $$. 👍
These videos have inspired me to use what I have and not go to the store every dang day. Thank you, and I hope you do some camping cooking videos!
And l I love your hat! I just went and added some to my temu cart 😂
@@cynthiahamilton9292 He's amazing
Brooke, will you show us your pantry, what you have stcked back for emergencies. Ty
😂😂😂 You crack me up!!! I needed that. So glad I subscribed to your channel. All of it looked delicious! 😊
When little, one of my grandsons called those hot dogs “baby bologna.” Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰
My husband and I use to use milk in our mato soup instead of water, and then we'd put picante sauce into it. DElicious!
This is helpful for people who are in a tight spot realistically financially
I hate when people miss the point and want to know where the veggies are!!! The goal is not to go to bed hungry.
😂 this made me giggle! I know right? I’ve already deleted so many comments on here saying, where are the veggies?! 🫠
Do you use Raman noodles 🍜 🤔. Loving ❤ this series.
My go to is potatoes, green beans and smoked sausage 😋. After I boil the potatoes and drain off the water to the beans I add butter and dump and heat and go.
I love a good ramen noodle! Lol
Yes that is what it is when you have something as a kid all the time because of cost and you had it so much you can’t stand it as an adult! That’s me with ziti and Ragu sauce we ate it many times a week! When I make something like that now it has to have cheese and veggies or meat for my hubby 😊
I get it about not eating certain things! I personally hate hot dogs BUT look when you're broke - do what you gotta do!
I like my hot dogs almost burnt if I have to use cheap ones. Seems like the flavor is better.
Nothing wrong with any kind of pasta 😊 I would have picked up a tomato and added afterwards ( diced up). But I love tomato, I know not everyone does; and it would have kept you within budget. Love your energy ❤
Just wanted to tell you that I appreciate all you do!! You have inspired me to cook more! Thank you!
I’m so thankful for you and this comment!! Thank you for being awesome!
I always grab mayo and mustard from the gas station every time for “make it to payday” times
One of my favorites is to make chicken and rice with frozen mixed veggies.. I make a big pot then I will make chicken fried rice.. it's delicious and cheap goes a long way
Great video Brooke! I love seeing what you come up with other than beans and rice!
Girl, I loved the short you made of Siri saying Aldi the same way you do!
❤❤i like the pink cap. It looks great. Good meal plan.
Thank you for pointing out food pantries for people who need them! God bless!
I had to read the last part several times before I got it. Shark week. 🤣
Thank you!! I’m SO GLAD this channel is helpful to you!! Makes me feel like I’m doing something right lol I love y’all so much 💜
@@SouthernFrugalMomma don't be cutting yourself down. You are a tremendous help.
I love soups, stews, and chili so much!!! Zuppa toscana, borscht, clam chowder, ham and bean, matzo ball... so many options!
I made a box of mac & cheese Friday I forgot I didn't have butter or milk. I thought of you Brooke and saved a cup of pasta water. Oh my goodness it was so much creamier than with milk and butter. I will only use pasta water from now on❤
lol the way you talk about soup is he same way I react when I even see canned potatoes oh my gag me I am shivering just typing it lol
😂 canned potatoes are kinda “sus”, as the boys say lol
@@SouthernFrugalMomma so true we know lol I use to say if they are real potatoes where are the peelings lol
Love when you sing while you cook. 💕 that’s a tasty meal
Super cheap meal: corn dog casserole 😂
Two boxes of jiffy corn bread mix and a pack of hotdogs cut up in small discs.
Remember Pizza Huts Cavitini it was delicious and had at least 3 different types of noodles in it ❤
Ironically, you just prepared what my supper was 2 nights ago 😃 loll loll keep it up. 😁
When I cook dogs and Mac and cheese I add broccoli and cook all at same time in same spot. 1 pot meal
Amazing! Great meal for three dollars and change.
I love your enthusiasm. Thanks for another great video!
I actually like the idea of different size shells or different shapes. It gives it more interest and makes it more fun for kids. It helps with the illusion of not being broke.
$3 meal? I'm thinking biscuits and sausage gravy
Have a marvelous Monday and be blessed always, Brooke & Co.! xoxo
I am like you. I do not like soup for a meal. I always walk away hungry within the hour.
I have bought the cheap frozen bag of vegetables and the knorr sides and canned chicken and make a cheap meal !!!!
What do you mean “how to shop at Aldi but it never works out”?
Fed my kids when they were little made water biskets &coffee creamer Gravy
It’s so funny how we’re all different. I live for beef soup and stew while I really don’t Mexican food (that’s my “thing that I don’t like that others love item).
My babies are going to love this meal. Thanks Brooke ❤
Really enjoying and learning from this series!
Looks yummy! This reminds me of some meals mom used to make. This is something that is so delicious and never tastes like you're broke!
This was a treat dinner when I was a kid! I loved when my mom would make it. It seemed like a splurge even tho it was a budget meal. ❤️
Canadian Vegan here again ... this brought memories of childhood ... I have vegan hot dogs and boxed mac and cheese in the pantry! Doing it! Bam!
Also beans and hot dogs are good to together
Broccoli YUCK! Oops sorry! I think of it like you do soups. Cheap side dish, egg noodles, then add a can of cream of chicken or mushroom soup. I add a little butter & milk but pasta water would work too! My kids loved it.
PEAS are another option, if you hate broccoli.
@@BergenholtzChannel I use a lot of vegetables. Just not broccoli. Picky, frozen peas in some & canned in others, not fresh. Many times I grind up to add to sauces. It works for me!
People want to gripe about you not having a vegetable, I have a thought for this meal. Cook a small onion with the hot dogs, it's a vegetable and would add a little taste. Oh wait, Ryder doesn't like cooked onions never mind lol. Let these nay sayers come up with something. Love you and your family. Keep on doing what you do
Girl... My family does not a a strict food budget. I have 4 kids and they love this meal! They beg me to make it at least once a week. No matter what this will always be in our food rotation!
