I'm glad you are listening to Tool, a lot of work is put into each of their albums, each different than the previous. Lateralus imo should be listened to in it's entirety, the flow from one song to another is amazing. Tool's first two albums are probably their best less harmonic more hardcore metal/rock. 10,000 days is another great album, so many layers of beautiful sound. If you get a chance, listen to A Perfect Circle, another band Maynard has, first song I highly recommend is Judith. The original video. I always enjoy your critiquing and reactions to music videos. Wings for Marie and its partner song 10,000 days are emotional bombs. Put together, they’re 20 minutes, written after the death of Maynard’s mother (Marie). I think 10,000 days hits harder of the two but they’re tear jerkers indeed, especially since they are so deeply personal to him. Get tissues.

It's funny how you say you felt calmed (at least in the beginning)by this song. I have listened to it 1000's of times. When I first realized how it calmed me and brought me to introspection I added it to a playlist that I listened to while playing tournament poker and would just let it wash over me. It almost brings me to a zen state. Now when I've had a bad day I can throw this CD in my car and just go for a drive and it feels like it resets me mentally so I can go back to a mindset where I can clear my head, think, and then act rather than just react to whatever situation put me in a bad mood or brought about my bad day.
I enjoy all sorts of music, but somehow Tool is completely transformative to me. I love this about art and particularly music. The feeling it brings makes it greater than the sum of it's parts... It's not just a guitar, bass, drum, and vocals. It's how all of those things come together and evoke a completely different feeling or action in another. ♥️

The Fibonacchi Sequence is the basis for this song. Squared, the numbers form a perfect outward spiral.
One example is the syllables used in the verses:

    And 1
    White are 2
    All I see 3
    In my infancy 5
Red and yellow then came to be 8

Lol, I asked for a review of this a few times then after watching this again I realized I had seen this the first time it was uploaded. Apparently I missed it so much I needed to see it again. You did a great job here with the commentary. Looking forward to seeing more Tool on the channel and hopefully they all stay up long enough for everyone to enjoy. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to Maynard's other projects A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. A great place to start with a Perfect Circle would be Judith. It's named after his mother who was paralyzed when he was around 11 years old. Loosely about why god lets bad things happen to good faithful people. This is a theme used in other songs as well in Tool's discography. Wings for Marie (1 and 2) and 10,000 days are also songs where he sings about her life and time spent living after her incident and later her death. He mentioned kind of regrets putting so much of himself in these tracks as it's hard to bring this up over and over again in every performance, but obviously something he felt he needed to address artisticly to deal with how it affected his life. Another great A Perfect Circle song would be the more recent track The Remedy which is said to be about people being Trolls. As someone else mentioned there is also a couple great covers from the kids in the O'Keefe Music foundation that do an amazing version of Tool's 46 and 2 as well as a few other songs.

You are correct thinking heart beat. The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence. It starts from one, the next number is one, and the next number being two, creates the 2+1 which is three, continuing in this mathematical progression. That's how they found the chord progression. It began linking up to the Fibonacci sequence." The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)." In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8). Push the envelope (5). Watch it bend (3)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (2), so (1), much (1), more that (2), beckons me (3), to look through to these (5), infinite possibilities (8)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3. Lyrics Below:
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
    Lets me see
As below so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines
Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
    Lets me see
    There is so much more
And beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities
As below so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
    I embrace my desire to
    I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
    To feel inspired
    To fathom the power
    To witness the beauty
    To bathe in the fountain
    To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral to
    Swing on the spiral
    Of our divinity
    And still be a human
With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
Between the sounds and open wide to suck it in
I feel it move across my skin
I'm reaching up and reaching out
I'm reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me
    Whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
    Spiral out, keep going
    Spiral out, keep going
    Spiral out, keep going
    Spiral out, keep going

I love when people first listen to Tool and try to pick up the beat! First, it’s odd time signatures, second, sometimes the members of the band are playing different time signatures, third, Danny (the drummer) had 8 limbs and sometimes they’re all different times. But with all great music, it gets better with each listen.

Thanks for the great reaction, loved seeing your passion and honesty regarding this journey of yours to understand music better. Tool is an excellent teacher, try counting out the beat for "normal music" (any pop song) and then compare to a Tool track. Tool is the exception that proves the rule. 🙂

In this case, for me, the first 3-4 minutes was good but after that, it got a little episodic. That being said, I can definitely appreciate the joy this song seems to have brought you. 😁As always, BIG HUGS! ❤

I'm a bit ashamed to say (since I listened to this song approximately ~2030102 times), that I don't think I ever noticed the music=human evolution thing (thank god I don't have a reaction channel). Even the end sounded "futuristic" to me... I don't know. Did I know that? Is it common knowledge in the fandom? I don't know. Anyway, amazing. I liked it! Thank you! 🙂

This has been my favorite song since I was a teenager. I first really heard Tool in a Guitar Hero game. They had 3 tracks that were so different from music I'd heard before. Playing the songs was tricky due to their complexity, length, and the crazy visuals (one of Tool's demands if their songs were put in the game was that they get a unique background to go with the songs instead of an animated band playing the music). Trying to pass those songs with my lack of skill was a mental and physical test. But it made Tool stick with me, and I listened to Lateralus and decided I had to get that album. It took me several more years to really appreciate it, and a few more years to get into more metal, but Tool is basically what made me a metalhead.

I will only say one thing about this song and leave the rest to other friends. The number of syllables in each verse of this song is based on Fibonacci numbers (1-1-2-3-5-8-13...) and also musical notes. For this reason, the song has a special rhythm

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it or not but this song is written around the fibonacci sequence. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 etc etc. Look at the lyrical structure. Even the percussion.
I looked through your channel, I highly recommend Invincible, Descending and 7empest from Fear Inoculum. Descending is by far the best of the 3.

Things about this are the changing time signature. It is based on Pythagoras: 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8, 5+8=13. Also, evolution. The artist is Alex Grey, who before art made his money by making anatomy textbooks.
