  • We took the VW Touareg across Australia to see how well it copes with a load in tow. The load in question? A 1963 split-window Kombi single-cab ute.

    Hmmm, The size of the fuel tank shouldn't be an issue if you aren't towing anything.
    Sounds like the problem with the electronic brake and the headlights really isn't the fault of the VW, as the e-brake is after market and not OEM. All in all, sounds like the Touareg is a pretty nice way to get for A to B. Thanks for the video - was entertaining and informative.

    What a great video. I like the long drive feed back.

    Here in UK you can option the "Off road pack" which gives you underside protection and a 90 litre fuel tank.

    I really enjoyed this towing test, Carsguide, despite never having been down under! Beautiful scenery takes, well-made review! More of those!

    I've done alot of out back driving and the max distance between fuel stations on sealed roads I've seen, is about 300-350kms. So we'll within the Touaregs range and a chance to stretch the legs every few hours.

    In South Africa the new Touareg is sold with a 90L tank so the tank size issue is somethjng VW Australia can address.

    I towed an old vw type 3 on a car trailer with my vw 140tdi alltrack passat and I sat on 110kph and got 10L/100kms from Newcastle to Cobram. I believe the passat to be a great tow vehicle

    14.8lt/100k towing 2.5 tonnes is pretty good. I remember a workmate telling me he averaged 25 pulling a 2 tonne caravan behind his AU Falcon. A smaller tank these days is there so weight is lower, hence consumption better. I have a Discovery Sport 110kw diesel, supposedly built to get out of town and off-road, with a 54lt tank. Go Figure...!!! I struggle to get 600k's on the highway, and get about 500 on the combined. I find this frustrating coz my last car was a VW Passat 130Tdi with a 70ltr tank which rarely got under 1100k's per tank...and always on a combined cycle. Best tank was 1311k's. VW should offer tank size as an option on something like the Touareg..!!

    Does this model come with a space saver spare? If so, what are the implications of a flat tyre whilst towing?

    Looks to be a great step forward but look at the tow ball weight limit with more than 2 people on board. I have an MY18 V8 TDI R-Line (100L fuel tank), on a recent trip from Sydney to Sunshine coast with a 2700kg van attached and two bikes and a kayak on the roof we averaged an identical figure consumption figure.

    Brilliant
    Your friend needs to sell more cars so you can do this kind of reviews, or more road trips! I always struggle to find this kind of videos on UA-cam

      I'll take that as a good reason to get more cars. Thanks for the justification!

    Having been on the same trip towing a 2000kg caravan your story was very interesting thanks for taking the time I think you may have swayed me towards buying a VW as I call them tow rag.

    My 2015 V6 TDI Touareg has the optional 100 litre fuel tank, I get around 15-16 litres/ per 100kms when towing our 6.5 metre caravan at 100 kph, the bigger tank does make a difference when touring, guess i will have to put a couple of jerry cans on the back of the van when I do eventually upgrade to the current model Touareg, I really don't think I would choose anything else as they are just such a great package, and just get a Redarc brake controller fitted which mates with all of the standard tech, problem solved

    Nice video. I have owned a VW for 13 years now and just bought a new Touareg to add to the collection. I am interested in adding a tow pack but not sure who to see about this add on. Who fitted the row pack to the Touareg in the review? Was it by VW or was it through a 3rd party. Just asking because is a tow pack is not mentioned in the options list.

  • @daviddrummond489
    @daviddrummond489 4 роки тому +4

    Pretty ordinary journalism. You cant blame the car for your aftermarket equipment issues. Same with the add on mirrors. As for fuel consumption, when you are outback just fill up at every opportunity like normal people do.

    • @bluecent
      @bluecent 4 роки тому +2

      I dint hear them blaming the car for the controlle4 and mirror issues, rather they’re considerations when choosing either.

    Am I wrong but apart from some small rolling hills, is Australia basically flat?

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  4 роки тому

      Pretty much.
      There's a "mountain range" that runs down the east side called the "Great Dividing Range", and of course there are some mountains around the place (hills by most other country's standards). But yeah, it's pretty flat.
      Cheers

    I have the V8 Rline fitted with integrated tow module & electric brake controller which work great, it also has a 100L tank which gives me heaps of range, no trailer range of around 1200Km. The V8 is extremely fuel efficient. Don't know what tank the new V8 will have when it reaches our shore. The other thing I like about my model is the size of the brakes they are huge with loads of stopping power.

      I'm a prado owner and my previous vehicle was a touareg 150tdi. My prado at 110kph consumes 22litres per hundred towing 2ton. Love the prado but the touareg makes the prado feel like a Massey Ferguson tractor.

    This kind of fuel consumption in a Diesel engine is absurdly high. What was VW thinking when they produced that car?!
    And to add insult to injury they fitted it with a pygmy fuel tank.

    You can Fill up at the truck pump. It's piss easy get a pointy plies and pull out the plastic insert the truck pump nozzle will now fit. They do it for "f##k heads" out there that can't regulate flow with the trigger.
