Touareg was designed to compete with Land Rover, BMW, and Mercedes. Atlas was designed to compete with Chevy Traverse and Ford Explorer. They are not in the same class of vehicle.

@@DarkPhoenixTSi Your answer makes no sense: Both Atlas and Touareg are SUV's, except one is sold in US, the other Europe (among other markets). How do you infer then that Europe actually doesn't like SUV's, when VW sells Touaregs here by the buckload (on top of Tiguans, T-Cross's and T-Rocs), and in fact SUV's make up over a third of the entire car market here (remembering that the market for trucks like your F150 doesn't really exist here)?
Bought a V6 Touareg (2006) for $1500 (85k miles)... fixed it all up with a few visits to the junk yard, and it's running like a champ. Can't beat that.
Pick a part do it yourself wrecking. Savior for European luxury 4x4 ownership.
In 15 years time that Atlas will be in much worse shape than the Touareg is today.
That's because the Touareg was a no-holds barred design. It came with all the VW group had to offer all the way up to its W-12 engine. Sadly, VW doesn't build them like that anymore.

I bought my 65K mile 2007 Touareg V8 in 2010 for just over a third of what it cost new. After 10 more years she is still in very nice condition. The paint is bullet proof. The interior still looks fresh. The carpet is so nice you can't even get real carpet anymore. And best of all you can buy a computer program and hook up your computer to the Touareg and it will tell you everything that goes wrong. Mine has never been to a service department I take care of it myself. The only downside is that if the engine or transmission goes your done. Major issues that can creep up on you include $2k brake jobs, 4 fuel pumps, center differential joint, huge exhaust system, air suspension issues, and electrical. These are not for the faint of heart. If you got skills it is a great vehicle.
Pretty confused in Germany there still is the Touareg but never heard atlas before 😅

I own an 07 FSI V8 Touareg (350hp). Bought used in 2015 for a pretty great price. It's a fantastic vehicle when it runs, however reliability is very poor. In 4 years of ownership on a fairly low mileage for its age Touareg, I've dropped thousands on repairs. Multiple Batteries, keyless entry module, transmission control module, stepper motor, driveshaft bearing, the list goes on. Still a few I going issues that I refuse to pay for including electrical gremlins. Parts are very expensive, I just about choked when I was quoted for pads and rotors at the dealer. If you're handy and can do the work yourself, you can save money but it's still quite expensive. Just be aware what you're getting into. Sure, you can get one for a steal, but be prepared to deal with constant headaches.
Also, just traded it in on a 2020 tacoma off road. No regrets, but looking forward to reliability! I did test drive an Atlas, and it feels cheap compared to the Touareg.
I just bought a 2006 Toureg R and it’s unbelievable how nice it is for that year. It’s a beast on the road.
the Touaregs price killed it from the very beginning. If it was 35-40k back then, they would have sold like hotcakes. Even today, if you can find a good used one with less than 20k miles, it will last you forever.
its better to find one after 80k that way you can tell if all the manuacture kinks got worked out.

@@wierdinthewoods3733 I did this, bought a year 2011 one at 60k miles 7 years ago. She's on 114k miles now and I've spent money on bits and bobs but she's sweet as a nut now and I love her. Still feels modern, comforable and fits in well with even the new Touareg's on the road.
Picked up a 16 Touareg executive trim level this summer with the VR6. Absolutely love it! Best vehicle I have ever owned, tows my 21 foot center console with ease. Fully loaded with Fuel and trailer at 5100 pounds. No issues. The atlas can’t even sniff the capability of my Touareg. Sad they aren’t selling them anymore here.

@@yankeedoodle6293 I didn’t really want a diesel. Been down that road before, The cost of maintenance is what pushed me to the gas engine. the difference of cost for buying a tid vs gas in my area was around 8k for the same vehicle.

This was super fun to watch. I went from that exact Touareg to that exact Atlas. The T-Reg was hard to give up after so long. Great comparison. You got it spot on.
In my country we have both, the Atlas is US$39.000 and the Touareg is between US$86.000 and $94.000 so I wouldn’t consider the Atlas in the same league as there is such a huge price difference.
I had no idea the back window on the hatch of the Touareg opened like that. My wife still drives her 05 and she is going to be extremely shocked it opens like that.

My mom had a 2012 TDI Toureg with all the options and when I drove that car through the snowy Idaho mountains, there was nothing that could replicate how powerful and safe I felt in that SUV. She sold it to VW for the same price she bought it as, but I begged her to pass it down to me. So sad that VW has traded the Toureg for the Atlas which is BUTT UGG

I'd LOVE that Diesel except I understand they weren't reliable and they were very expensive to fix. Overengineered and expensive parts. Am I wrong?

I got a maxed out 06 V10 TDI Touareg recently. Full history Im the second owner roomy (good because Im 6'4) 140k miles. I love it so far
The Atlas is not a luxury suv. The Touareg was another example of "vw, a general consumer brand, made another car to compete with the luxury cars it already manufacturers." Id still take a Tourag over the Q7 or Cayenne...not Cayenne TurboS due to performance and not Q7 Exclusive for its interior...but the if not for its bad reliability it was something awesome.
You can buy 12 of Touregs for $50K. Even if each one lasts you just 3 years, you will be on Social Security before you need another car.

I had a 2003 VW Touareg V10 and it was fantastic. Absolutely one of my favorite cars ever with a monstrous torque of 750 Nm already at low rmp, however it was not a fuel economy champion. It had a lot more options than yours but it was so expensive. In Italy it was worth something like 120000€ so 140000$ in 2003

I've been keeping up with the Tourareg videos semi-regularly to see one get properly used. I had a V8 one briefly and wanted to share some thoughts before people go off to craigslist. These are at the age and price where many are not cared for well. Yes, you can get one for $4000 or less but please get a pre-purchase inspection if you're planning on keeping it. If the intake actuators are broken, there is a company that makes aluminium ones so you don't have to buy the whole kit since VW doesn't sell just the arms. The thermostat is behind the timing belt. I had a problem where water collected in the spare wheel well where the air pump is located. The battery is under the driver's seat. The one in the video has a rear locker, good luck finding one with that option but the center locker is there. The leather is quite good at least and the handling is very good for a 5000 pound tank. I really liked mine but I couldn't justify spending the purchase price in maintenance to get it back to daily driver reliability.
That's a lot of hail damage on the hood.
It was a $4000 car. You could spend $1000 with PDR and still come out ahead! :)

Two years ago me and my wife were looking for a new suv she test drove a brand new atlas she said it felt cheap and drove like a minivan. She ended up getting a slightly used second gen tdi touareg.

Yet (knock on wood) 70k miles in. Most common problems have to do with dpf egr. Have had plenty of diesel trucks in the past personal and for work so have some experience with this stuff. I’ve already looked up delete kits and they’re fairly priced for the tdi.
Does it have to be a certified used one with the fix? I found some cheap ones on car gurus, but not sure if I should stick to the certified ones...

Rear seat folding in the touareg was made like this to give the car a tight underbody. No hanging belly sliding on the rocks

@Lars Tomasson Really? The Touran, Golf, Passats of the mid 2000s had flat folding seats too. Why not put them in the Touareg? Because the seat bottom would be lower and then the Touareg wouldn‘t have the 4 inches more ground clearance.

Touareg was made in Germany, Atlas made in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Former is a luxury vehicle, the latter an average SUV.
Crazy how a cars location of manufacture is relevant to the overall build quality of a vehicle.
Touareg has always been made in Bratislava, Slovakia- not Germany.

Great videos! FYI - An old Touareg feature you keep missing is that IT DOES have a tow hook. That eye shaped screw thing to the right of the spare tire can be screwed into 4 different points on the vehicle (two on the front and two on the back) as needed to tow you out of a jam. There's a smaller metal piece beside it that "unlocks" the panels to access the tow hook points. Learned that from tow truck driver last winter after owning mine for almost 10 years!

They also put regular gas in it (says premium required on the gas cap). That would make the engine adjust the timing for less power and efficiency

Couple of things about the T1 Touareg. You dont vae to hold the key until it starts. just turn it and let go and it will start . There is a hidden storage box under the passenger seat in the front and you forgot to show the part of the center console box that holds up beverage bottles along with being an arm rest lol and the Radios DO have a auxillary inpur option . theres a vacant spot in the back of the head unit where the cable connects. and now theres a aftermarket Bluetooth auxillary and sandisc connection upgrade to he 2004s. (2005 and up had analog amps where they can just swap out to an android head unit .....2004 had digital making the upgrade difficult
Pulling a small camper through the Rockies during snowstorms to get the the fresh pow is what this does for me. Touareg can easily pull out a full size truck from a ditch in snow. The looks on their faces when I hop out with a toe-strap is priceless.
The Atlas sounds like my wife's 4 cylinder 2006 CRV.
Also, every time I watch one of these Touareg videos I decide I want one. Then I'm reminded of the mileage vs my 2003 TDI and nope out.
I picked up a 2016 Touareg TDI in March of this year. Love it. But I'd like to see a similar comparison with the Treg you're sporting.
The third gen Touareg is much better than the first gen, but it unfortunately lost the low range transfer case here in the US.

And then you have a real SUV in use, maximum usability or space that is only possible with that moving hinge.
Would you love to hit the ceiling with your head every few seconds due to a higher cussion position to get an higher positioned hinge that is needed to get the cussion vertical to get a plane + deep trunk?
The Touareg is a real Porsche era piece of engineering developed under Piech era, a grandson of the old Ferdinand Porsche based on his thoughts about a modular system of sharing platforms across the VW brands from Porsche over Audi to VW. In the VW all these options Porsche driver had to pay for were included.
Who looked for quality and not the fame of a brand could get everything for cheap from VW ... and so the volume of the complete production reached a volume that offered maximum of profit - just by scale they otherwise could not make.
Remember: in europe a Touareg was an alien regarding its size. Unuseable in italians small streets, uncomfortable in european parking lots .. but too small for american buyers.
For that time they made a damn good job cause you look at it as 15 year old piece but its early development stages and design sketches had started in the last century just 20 years ago.
Pretty long way and a car still good in shape even its higher percentage of electronic & mechatronic components.

I am german and I'm shocked to see what happened to volkswagen. they've cut costs and standardized their engineering style over nearly all models wich seems pretty cheap. however I slightly prefer the plain design to that old chrome details, I'm really shocked about the decline of functionality, offroad capability and mataerial quality... hope they will get back there one day

I had the old Touareg v6 tdi full options for a few years... it was and it is awesome in offroad, plus it has the compressor pump capability. My dad has the new one, front camera - good for offroad, diesel 286hp 6.1 (realistic 6.2 if you know how to accelerate it correctly) sec 0-62 mph so... for offroad the old one, for everything else the new one is better! P.s. in the old one the aux is audio in. Back then that was excelent to connect a mp3 player to the car.

Most of the features on the old touareg are paid for extras so not a good test for interior equipment.
VW should bring over the new Touareg as a top of the line model, even if it’s priced more similarly to the Q7 or Cayenne. It’s just so far better than the soccer mom Atlas. As a 2014 Touareg TDI owner, when I eventually need to get rid of the Touareg, I’d never even consider the Atlas in its current form.
The problem is, no one will buy it like no one bought the last one. Not many people are prepared to pay a premium for a VW.
Ryan L A lot has changed in just the last few years, with consumers paying $50k+ for SUV’s with lesser quality. I think VW was simply ahead of their time with the Touareg here in the US.
@@JMacGyver1 VW just can't command top dollar in the US. Every time they try to charge more than their value branded vehicles, they fail. Other brands could do this...just not VW. People still look at VW as the company that made a cheap Beetle.

The comparation that you are trying to make is the same as 2004-2006 Phaeton and a 2019 Passat.
If the new Passat has bigger size than old Phaeton, then they can do comparation between those two.

I have the same year with the V8 but in black and I love it,oh you forgot the folding mirror's bud great vid.
When folding the Touareg back seats lift the front of the bottom cushion only, not the back, you are fighting the hinge. I have a similar system in my Ford Escape, but instead of a hinge there is just a bent wire that acts as a hinge. And no place to store the headrests, which is why my father lost one when he owned it.
Came to the comments to say this. It's the same design as the 4th generation Golf/Jetta platform (just a little bit better hardware).
Grab the leather handle and pull it (kind of snatch it actually) straight up, then the rear of the seat bottom will slide forward allowing it to clear the seat back.

I love my 2006 V8 Touareg fully loaded with air suspension and center and rear lockers. Bought used at 125,000 miles in great condition. Though I dislike that it has to use premium gas and no aux for an MP3 player. It's well worth it. Though I miss my 2000 Jeep TJ that I built for rock crawling.
I have a 2005 V8. If yours has the navigation, there's an ability to add an aux cord. There are leads on the back of the nav system that you can hook up a special $10 cord to and run it through the center console. Pain in the butt to install, but well worth it

Yes there is an RCA plugs inside the storage compartment. I did buy an RCA to a 3.5mm cord but it still did not work with my MP3 player.
ICaughtYouBASStard Weird that it wouldn’t work. To get into AUX mode, you hit The CD button on the nav system, then hit the AUX soft key (lower right). Make sure the volume is turned up to 100% on your device
The old Touareg had outstanding build quality and frankly looks. I have owned three old shape Touaregs and I still have one now (2006). Sure it drives a bit like a bus but it works and it looks great and everything still works, 17 years old !! That's a quality built car.

Well, here in America Volkswagen has discontinued the Touareg.
The plastic is much better now. I don't think it is cheaper. For a utility vehicle, I want as much plastic as possible. If I could have gotten plastic instead of carpet in my new VW I would have taken it. Instead I paid a couple hundred to get plastic matts to lay over my carpet.

This era unfortunatelly was the last that cars were practical, reliable, estetic yet with electric comfort easy to maintain and at a reasonable price. Today is just expensive tablets and plastic
to lift the bottom of the back seat without struggling, just pull the front of the seat up first, that releases it and then you can pull it from the back and fold it down! (it's the same on my old mk4 golf)

Bro, the Touareg does have the Auxiliary port and its in the storage area under your arm rest area in the center, 17:20.
One question: why do you rate keyless start as a plus?
It makes steeling cars way easier. There are "extender boxes" which are able to extend the key signal, so that one "bad" guy with one box is near to you and your key while the other is next to the car, and this way the car thinks the key is nearby and opens and starts. They also sneak around houses and if the keys are near enough to a window, they can start the car and drive off. (Help against it: wrapping the key in aluminium foil, but then you always have to unwrap it to use it yourself, or buy expensive etuis)
-folding the seats: but with the atlas, you don't have the seat cushions as a barrier for the luggage. (You also don't have that in the newer Touaregs and other cars sadly, safetywise that was a good thing)
There is something wrong with that V8. My touareg does 0-60 in 7 seconds
All of TFL's 0-60 tests take way longer than they should. I'd guess it's because they're way above sea level.
High altitude and a high mileage engine perhaps low on compression

Well said, I am a 2012 Touareg TDI Executive model owner. Found one that hit a dealer lot after it sat in a warehouse for over 16 months. VW dealer acquired it, updated the diesel certification and I found it with 60k miles and certified pre-owned for $22k.
Got mine for $17k with 42,000 miles. Best decision ever.
Trims on all 2004 era vw was gorgeous, it did need repair if not well maintained and even so some things would stop need gluing and stuff lots of fabric stuff door card fabric, roof liner at times and some of the soft dashes would disintegrate if they hadn't had a cover on them all get really sticky where the leathery vinyl stuff covering the foam had been destroyed by UV but all in all just soft touch everywhere I had a mark 4 golf and now have a 2020 Golf R and my mark 4 golf probably had a higher quality interior even back then I would say it literally had almost no scratchy plastic at all if any it was built like a tank it had the hardest bumper, glass headlight housings and the crash bar that was like half the height of the bumper nearly but honestly that bumper was made of something that just it didn't break it didn't crack it just bent if anything wow even talking about it I just want to look for a nice two door GTI fourth gen to put away so much love for old Volkswagens and the engines were pretty Indestructible and very easy to work on from those generations now in my 2020 golf I wouldn't know the first thing I was doing apart from coding some of the features on cars network and modules and very basic maintenance I guess like there is so much that can go wrong in those things and mine has a lot of the same components as that big modern Beast you are driving infotainment speakers headlights pretty sure that atlas or whatever it is is based on the mqb platform same as the Gulf the Passat the Audi rs3 A3 S3 so many cars so many common components so much can go wrong 😂 I see why you have so much love for that old Beast and I feel like although it's a petrol hungry lump of a thing it proves my point that even it was built like a tank by comparison to that much bigger car

My 2010 TDI blows the Atlas away... On tech, fuel economy, off road, handling and it’s just way cooler.
What fuel mileage are you getting? I only get 18-23mpg and about a liter of DEF every 1k miles.
Moral of this story. Buy a used touareg
