I've been keeping and propagating Monsteras as houseplants for the past 36 years. In my experience it's quite normal for the oldest, lowest leaves on the stem to turn yellow and die off. I always snap off a leaf at the stem and discard it when it starts turning yellow. The same thing happens with large Philodendrons. They're incredibly hardy plants providing they're not allowed to dry out completely.
I recently (2 weeks ago) split my monstera and repot into three separate Pots. I’ve been getting yellow leaves almost weekly😢 using chunky mix and watered a week ago. What could be causing my issue?
I have a huge monsterra with such large leaves. But just in the last few weeks , 3 of the bottom smaller leaves have turned yellow. Gradually one by one. The only leaves left are the big leaves? Will they die too😢
I used to neglect fertilizer and depended on slow release added to soil. Now that I mix my own soils, I add a weak dose of 9-3-6 or 4-4-3 every water. Makes a significant difference. Very thorough guide to analyze problem!
When u don't have monstera and still watch this hehe yet still very informative in general, I'm gonna check my aglaonema with 2 leaves yellowing. Thank you
Thanks Richard, as we grow in the hobby and learn more and more, we can overlook certain things and thats what ive done with my Adansonia root bound! great vid! thanks for keeping me on my toes.
I'm having the same problem with a new Pothos. I don't see any pests but it may have been over watered. The roots seem good so I gave it some fresh soil and Hopefully that will fix the issue before I lose another leaf. 🤞
I have a small leaf on my young monstera turn yellow and it is the only leaf that turned yellow. But it was closer to the window when we got a really cold spell. And I also realized that the tiny leaf was getting too much light.. A simple turning the pots every few days and a pruning of that leaf and the monstera is happy again.
@@miav785 That could also be my problem but im only losing leaves at the top of the plant not on the vines. I did move it away from a south facing window. Alright sir, I am back with more questions and thank you for all your answers, I have taken you advice and am very happy. This video was an answer to prayer. This is exactly what our previous conversation was on. My monstera is not drinking water AT ALL anymore, has a bit of curling on one or two leaves and is yellowing just around the edges of most leaves. But, the yellowing is not as obvious as yours here. Its more of yellow colored fading (if that makes sense). I know I need to repot because it is massive and still in the 8 inch nursery pot I got it in. I see no pests, it is no loner south facing and is not drinking water. As a result, I only give it sips because I fear root rot. HELP!!!
@@SheffieldMadePlants I am going to be uprooting this Wednesday to repot and treat with peroxide. I wish I could send you pics somehow. I do not have any social media though.
Great information as always, thank you. I think you should rename yourself 'Plant Physician'. More fitting as our 'go to' point of call for diagnosis and treatment for all that ails our plants!
I have five huge monstera in 18" pots that get some yellowing leaves. They probably need repotting, which I will have to do in the spring. I'll probably have to divide them...or just give them bigger pots with more soil. I never expected them to grow so large, but they seem to be happy in my home. Luckily, they're pretty tolerant of conditions that aren't optimal.
@@SheffieldMadePlants I find that they can do better on the dry side...even if they get some brown leaves...than to be over-watered. Large, rootbound plants tend to suck up water more quickly, so overwatering isn't much of an issue. What's gonna kill me is trying to get them out on the deck in springtime to repot them, since they're really heavy already. 😝
I've repotted my monstera in a Lechuza self watering pot. It was root bound in the pot I bought it in so I've repotted in a Classico 21. I just took it out of it's pot and repotted it in pon without removing the existing soil around the roots because apparently you don't need to (but then every video I watch says otherwise). The leaves are wilting, some of the smaller lower leaves have turned yellow. I don't know what I've done wrong 🤔 I watered it from the top and let the excess drain into the water reservoir underneath. I tried emptying the water reservoir out but then the bigger leaves that were looking OK started wilting as well. The Lechuza instructions say to only top water it for 12 weeks, does that mean top water it over the sink so the excess drains out and not into the reservoir? Is the pon pulling water out of the soil left around the roots? Should I remove all the soil around the roots and repot in just pon? I have no idea what's going on! 😨
Thanks for the great video! I have a question, I have a golden Pothos that is becoming root bound, can I trim the roots when I repot it in order to keep it in the same pot without damaging it or stunting its growth too much? Thanks so much in advance 💚🪴
I’m new to house plants. Never have had a green thumb. Usually overwater. Trying hard to restrain myself. Question: I’ve got one stem growing a few new leaves each with 5-6” roots hanging down. Do you recommend I do anything with it?
I bought my huge monstera 5 months ago, and I'm not sure why the smaller leaves are getting yellow. I didnt fertilize it in the summer, I wonder if I should do it now even tho its november? I got two growing lights in case it wasnt getting enough light, but it didnt prevent leaves getting yellow. Do you recommend giving some fertilizer now? I also got myself a moisture meter. Before watering the soil is really dry everywhere else but small spot in the center of the soil it says 4-5. I give a fair amount of water once a week. Does this mean its too wet even after a week? Might I have a root rot problem instead or is 4-5 dry enough in the middle?
If most of the soil is dry it should be ok. Might be wise to check out the roots though. If the plant is still growing then continue feeding. It's under a grow light so sounds like it will be
Hey Sir Richard!🪴 Great video!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I am watching this keenly but I am not quite there yet. A few months ago, my son left his plants with me when he returned to University. One of them was a Monstera that he was rooting in a jar. During the summer, I put it in a pot but it went downhill pretty fast. I figured it was because I put it in soil that was far too dense. But I was able to save it by cutting off the rotten roots and soaking it in Hydrogen Peroxide. I’ve even took another cut off it. Now, it has rooted very well again in a jar of water and has three leaves and one new leaf starting.🪴 Question: Do you think I should wait until Springtime to put it back in a pot of well-draining soil? Or should I transfer it to soil now? I have never had a Monstera before so I don’t know much about them.🪴 Thanks in advance for your great plant care advice! We appreciate you!🪴
