thanks for sharing ... I'm an owner of the first iteration of the mini and viewing the videos and photos you've uploaded I really don't think the changes are wrenching enough to justify the 2. The video is of course better but not amazingly better and yes the flight performance will also be better. Nice comparison. New video suggestion: can you compare the regulatory, hurdles / requirements of flying the mini-2 vs the Magic Air 2? FAA registration, getting permission to fly in certain spaces etc? Would help new drone users dramatically. Thanks.
Both drones are under 249kg, in the USA and Canada drones 250kg and above are required to be registered and the operator needs a liscense, these drones were specifically made to sort of exploit that rule
I had a Mini1 for two months and sold it. I've had the Mini2 for a week and its jaw dropping how much better it is for $100 Canadian. Connectivity is flawless. Power is shocking. It plows through wind. Sound is half as loud and apparently due to harder plastic. As for the camera, I haven't noticed a huge difference but I also haven't done a lot of editing in a week. I'm also still learning that aspect of droning. I wonder how much better the Mini3 will be?? LOL
@@utkarshsahu thats a great price for an M1. I guess it all depends what you want to do with the drone. Theres nothing wrong with the M1, its just that the M2 is a more capable drone. Speaking as a Canadian, where we have some of the strictest drone regulations and biggest no-fly zones, the big answer to 'why Mini 2 and not Air 2" is that the Mini is 249 grams... which was very intentional on DJI's part. One of the limits in Canada is that 250 gram marker. Drones under 250 grams do not have to be federally registered, and can be flown without requiring the NAV Canada "Basic" operator certificate. (You obviously still have to follow all of the restrictions like no flight within 100m/300' of developed areas, buildings, houses, parks, no flying over events, traffic, etc., plus altitude and wind speed restrictions, no flight within a radius of any airport or helipad or prison, hospital, government building, etc., and more - but you don't need the certificate, and don't need to register the hardware.)
One year later I'm watching this as a potential first drone buyer in Australia and I have choices of a DJI refurbished Mini for $339 as the cheap option , refurb Mini 2 for 629 , brand new Mini 2 Fly More Combo for $949 ( three batteries and all the spares ) or a DJI Mavic Air 2 for $1499 , all in aussie dollars . Right now I'm leaning to the $949 option , that equates to $699 USD at the current rate of exchange . I don't want to buy a toy but I don't want to sell the farm to buy a drone either , especially as a novice . Constructive thoughts welcome , thanks .
Great video Billy! I'm soo tempted to pick one up but still want the Air 2...Id rather have something a bit bigger and capable but the Mini 2 is such a little beast
About 2 years ago around here you used to see people fly drones all the time, but now I rarely see them. And I think 90% of people don't need more than the Mini 2 even if an Air2 is better. Even the Mavic Pro original- I haven't seen anyone fly those for over a year.
I have the mini. I'll likely get the mini 2 for the raw photo feature (even though I feel the mini could have had a firmware update to shoot in raw) but I also like the new range. The reason I i'd get the mini 2 over the air 2 is because I still won't have to register the drone or have a license to operate it. I basically see the mini 2 as a mavic air 2 mini ;)
Gday Billy, At the end you ask "if you've had the mini 1 why wouldn't you upgrade to the Air 2". I have the mini 1, yes im thinking about upgrading to the mini 2 but now I'm thinking why not wait until the mini 3. Yes I woukd love to upgrade to a Air 2 or Air 2S, but it's not a question of whether I could, the question us "why, woukd I?". The mini's have something that none of the other drones in the "Mavic" range have, the mini's have the deal breaker for any other mavic drone. WEIGHT!!, or more precisely lack of weight. Been a sub 250g (.55lb) drone means no one knows where I'm flying it because I don't have to register it.
I am a total fan of drone photography and video but i have never flown a drone. And I would like to begin right now. What drone should i buy? A cheap one, a better one and learn cautiously? What should my experience curve be like?. Thanks.
I crashed my mini-2 then bought another then stuck the second one up in my pine tree about 78 feet high.. then I called my tree buddy and he got it out with his bucket truck..then I got the first one fixed....I should stay on the ground...But now I have two dji mini-2`s....Great Video !!! True Story
When you say there are less software limitations with Mini 2, does that include for mapping? The Mini can only use Dronelink. Can the Mini 2 use Pix4D?
Just to be fair. Mini 1 supports Litchi, DroneLink and other 3rd party tools, so you have "Follow me" mode, Panorama pictures and some other features that you don't have with Mini 2. And while in Mini 2 you have Occusync 2, you have just one extra minute of battery, so cannot go beyond 3.4 miles unless you don't want to return the drone. Plus the shaking gimbal issue with Mini 2 that was reported recently and the orange line at the top left corner. Finally, the remote control in Mini 2 is larger than the drone itself.
Strangely, after editing both the raw and the jpeg, there's very little difference. If anything very unusually the raw started to fall apart displaying colour noise etc well before the jpeg. Both when zoomed in look just as clear.
I totally agree with you! In my case, I always shoot in RAW with my Mavic 2 Pro. Now, between the Mini vs Mini 2, I like more how the JPEGs look on the former than the processed RAWs on the latter. The software handles the JPEG processing very well, especially bright highlights.
What about battery capacity? Are the batteries the same as the mini? Specs show capacity for the mini 2 as 5200 mAh. Does this figure in to the distance? I have the mini and am considering the mini 2 but wondering if the batteries could be interchangeable. Thanks!
FYI, the Mini 2 camera is different. It has a higher performance processor, providing over double the bitrate, which allows the sensor to process and record enough bits to support 4K. The Mini 1 camera is clearly different, with less performance, regardless of the sensor being the same.
Dude nice video well made and explained. But gee you talk like the wolrd will explode in 10 seconds and you need to tell s 40 second story before that! Makes me very nervous ....
Does the mini 2 have active track and obstacle avoidance? Also, does active track always have features with it, like circling its target as it follows?
Can you check the firmware on the mini 1 It seems like you're getting in error weak signal or Adjust antenna due to the firmware update on the app I think the mini 1 is having some problems Can you check on that
Please add this to the comparison: DJI Mavic MIni 2 does NOT have access to the SDK, meaning there are fewer apps for it. (No programmable routes/etc.) DJI currently has NO PLANS of porting their SDK to the Mavic Mini 2, whereas it IS available with the original Mavic Mini.
To process 4k videos, you need a lot quicker proccesing unit, so you cant just add a 4k camera on same unit and make it shoot 4k, as with this logic my old nokia 3200 could shoot 8k videos with new camera attached..
Nice in depth comparison! I was sold on getting the Mini 2 but there are rumors DJI is coming with the mini 3 as early as April 2022 so I'm gonna hold off for a bit. Hopefully the mini 3 wont be to much of a price jump.
thanks for a great video...i need some tips what kind of micro SD card would be sufficient to capture 2.7k (not 4k)? and would love some details on how much I can record on a 64GB card?
Yes it can go 6 miles but with 31 mins of battery its safe to say it will only be going 4 before it has to return to home, I hope that extra speed will help it out
I disagree with the idea that it was definitively artificial limiting of the hardware. Is it possible DJI limited the first Mini to 2k so that people would buy the Mini 2? Yes, it's possible. But it's also possible the first Mini had a slower mobile processor and didn't have the horsepower to process 4k video. The Mini 2 likely has a processor upgrade that they don't advertise because who really cares. If you could unlock the 4k capabilities and force the software to record in 4k I'd be the whole drone would choke up. It'd probably interfere with some core processes too, or simply skip frames and be below 30 FPS. Or ya know...maybe he's right and it is all artificial limiting. Apple does it with their phones after all. Tesla with their cars. It's a common, sleezy practice.
Question, Why not splurge on the bigger Mavic? I use the Mini's for world traveling as it's frequently considered still a toy and doesn't need to be registered in some countries.
The only problem with upgrading from the Mini or Mini 2 to the Mavic Air 2 is FAA registration. The former are both under 250 grams while the latter is more than double that. Any R/C aircraft over 250 grams must be registered with the FAA and have the registration number added to the aircraft before flying.
@Billy Kyle really very useful info, thanks for that. Unfortunately I have to admit that I do always get a feeling of extreme stress after I listen only some seconds to you on this channel. It feels like you are under extreme time pressure, need to multitask 100 further things at the same time what stressed me extremely. Would appreciate a more relaxed, quieter kind of presentation if possible. Your content is great. You might have heard of the tech channel Mrwhoistheboss recently? According to the many comments I'm not the only one who finds his voice and presentation very pleasant. Guessing it has to do with him seemingly being in a good mood, even loughing most of the time. One can feel this in his voice. It's same with you in some of your VLOGs when your loughing.

No registering and no license 🤔...are you from uk If so is this the case in the UK with the mini 2
Congrats on your subscription numbers Billy!
Thanks for this amazing usefully video 👍
Amazingly helpful video dude,
thanks
Gday Billy,
At the end you ask "if you've had the mini 1 why wouldn't you upgrade to the Air 2".
Thanks for such a great review!
Of course! I’m glad you enjoyed.
Looks like the Ben Franklin Bridge and center city Philly in the background.
Thanks for sharing 😊
Just to be fair. Mini 1 supports Litchi, DroneLink and other 3rd party tools, so you have "Follow me" mode, Panorama pictures and some other features that you don't have with Mini 2. And while in Mini 2 you have Occusync 2, you have just one extra minute of battery, so cannot go beyond 3.4 miles unless you don't want to return the drone. Plus the shaking gimbal issue with Mini 2 that was reported recently and the orange line at the top left corner. Finally, the remote control in Mini 2 is larger than the drone itself.
Beautifully analysed. ...thnx.
Have you tried the Lichi app yet thanks for the bids bud! I love the Lichi app for tracking me while cycling
The mini 2 can track you in video?
Someone told me it doesn't have tracking 🤷♀️
So glad I found this channel. I’m in Jersey right over the bridge. Actually, the bridge in the video lol
That's awesome!!! You're local
@@billykyle yessir. Love your content. I fly around here and the beach. Some good spots.
Thank you nice comparison
Very good video as usual Billy. I sure would like to see a one inch sensor in this tiny package. I would pay double or triple the price.
What about battery capacity? Are the batteries the same as the mini? Specs show capacity for the mini 2 as 5200 mAh. Does this figure in to the distance? I have the mini and am considering the mini 2 but wondering if the batteries could be interchangeable. Thanks!
Subscribed! Great review!
Thanks for such an informative vid :)
Glad it was helpful!
FYI, the Mini 2 camera is different. It has a higher performance processor, providing over double the bitrate, which allows the sensor to process and record enough bits to support 4K. The Mini 1 camera is clearly different, with less performance, regardless of the sensor being the same.
Billy, do you know if the DJI Smart controller works with the Mini 2?
Dude nice video well made and explained. But gee you talk like the wolrd will explode in 10 seconds and you need to tell s 40 second story before that! Makes me very nervous ....
Does the mini 2 have active track and obstacle avoidance? Also, does active track always have features with it, like circling its target as it follows?
It doesn’t have obstacle avoidance, it has 2 sensors on the bottom so it can land easier.
Awesome review ❤️😍
Can you check the firmware on the mini 1 It seems like you're getting in error weak signal or Adjust antenna due to the firmware update on the app I think the mini 1 is having some problems Can you check on that
@Trapper John didn't think about🤔🤔 that I saw another droner install the old version on his mini 1 And it seemed to work but I am not sure
2:18 the first Mini has shooting mode buttons though.
You are so professionale man ✌🏻✌🏻
Can you buy the Mini 2 propellers for the mini 1, also is there a way to unlock the fractures in the mini 1
Nice in depth comparison! I was sold on getting the Mini 2 but there are rumors DJI is coming with the mini 3 as early as April 2022 so I'm gonna hold off for a bit. Hopefully the mini 3 wont be to much of a price jump.
This aged like milk.
Right… At this price point iI rather buy macic air 2 or second hand mavic pro2
Where I am the mini 3 is literally double the price of the 2
Hey, very useful very thorough 😍😍

thanks for a great video...i need some tips what kind of micro SD card would be sufficient to capture 2.7k (not 4k)? and would love some details on how much I can record on a 64GB card?
Hello you have won🎊 text the above telegram to claim your prize🎉 🎉.
Great job Billy
Yes it can go 6 miles but with 31 mins of battery its safe to say it will only be going 4 before it has to return to home, I hope that extra speed will help it out
4:30 wait so are you saying I can hack the camera and remove the software limitations if I knew how to?
In theory.. yes. I’m sure there’s a way. Might bit be the easiest thing to do, but I’m sure it’s possible.
I use the Mini's for world traveling as it's frequently considered still a toy and doesn't need to be registered in some countries.
awesome video
thanks bro. from philippines
You're welcome!
I think the most important question is, what happened to the marina at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge?
The only problem with upgrading from the Mini or Mini 2 to the Mavic Air 2 is FAA registration. The former are both under 250 grams while the latter is more than double that. Any R/C aircraft over 250 grams must be registered with the FAA and have the registration number added to the aircraft before flying.
So as far as dealing with wind does it refer to wind speed or gusts?
Thank you for the files, Will go through them and decide to buy
Will the batteries for the mavic mini 1 work on this new model thx
Super super Subbed! Thank yooouuuuu Brother!!!!
Thanks ...tons. Would love to get a bigger DJI but we have flight paths all around us and it will be a bit before getting qualified...
Hello~
dji Mavic Mini and Mavic Mini 2 Comparison explanation Thank you.
Have a lively day~
@Billy Kyle really very useful info, thanks for that.
Nice job! 👍👍
Michael
