  • Due to the coronavirus I'll be staying in a lot more than I had anticipated, so I picked up this not running, project 1999 Suzuki DR350SE dual sport to work on while I'm home. The bike currently does not run and needs some love and care. This DR350SE is the first bike I've had in a long time, and is my first dual sport motorcycle! The 1999 has really nice off road suspension and is basically a dirt bike for the street. Follow along as I work on this motorcycle and various other projects through the quarantine!

Just got a 95. All stock, 6300 miles, runs great. You already got the nice tank and rack....I gotta get those.

Awesomer choice! I have a 93 Dr350S and rebuilt and customized it from the ground up. Now looks like a 70s scrambler. Here are the mods you should definately do:
-Remove Snorkel from Airbox, it restricts the flow and is only there for making the induction noise quieter, but noone will notice
-Get a new Exhaust pipe (manifold), the stock one rusts easily and restricts the flow heavily
These 2 mods already make a giant difference. But wait, there is more haha
-New exhaust (i have a GPR but anything will do, the stock one is massive, susceptible to rust and restricts flow too. Just dont get a supertrapp or dominator, they are cheap in quality and way too loud.
-Best mod: Tm33 Carb (flatside carb) gives you a lot better throttle response, especially with a better responding throttle tube. You have to add a second hole as big a s the stock hole to the airbox though.
-For suspension: new spring in the back, for the front even new spring didnt make a difference so i added some stainless steel "sleeves" to give them more preload. Suspension is probably the "weak" link
But man let me tell you, with these mods you will have a super reliable, easy to maintain and well balanced bike that is still compatible with newer bikes. Wouldnt trade my bike for anything new!
Also: Could you please explain how to set the idle properly and tell us the jet sizes?
Super stoked that someone is building a DR350! Subbed!

Thanks for the comments! I certainly can make a video on a procedure to set idle when I get the chance. As for more mods, I’m keeping this on quite a budget for now but will modify the more that I ride it and decide where I want to improve it!

Nice! You got one of the only two years the SE had the dirt model suspension.
Adjusting the compression and rebound on the fork and shock to factory spec as a starting point may be needed as a lot of owners play with the adjustments without knowing what they do.
Whatever you do, please don't cut that front fender or throw away parts. These are getting rare.
If you ever want to part with the rear luggage rack i'll be interested in buying it.

That's awesome to hear, considering I plan on using it for mostly off road and dirt roads. I can tell that the suspension was adjusted, I'll certainly set it back to factory and go from there. I have no plans to throw anything away or tastefully modify it! I plan on keeping the rack for now but if it comes off I will let you know.

Thanks, will do! For now I plan on keeping it stock, but if I upgrade it I'll certainly be showing that here before I list it.

    Nice bike and garage :)
Have a fun with it. Check carb vacuum port (when it is unplugged choke is not working). Also check basics like spark and fuel (floater may be stuck) ... It must start :)

Suzuki DR350's are the Toyota Corollas of bikes, just put gas in it and keep the oil clean and they will run forever!

What did you pay for the bike? I’ve always liked the little DR. Interested to hear what they’re going for these days.

I got this one for a real deal since it needed work. Around me well running ones are often listed for $2-3,000, which in my opinion is a bit steep

I did a build on a 96 350se a few years ago, here's a link to the video on that build that may give you some additional ideas. I love these bikes, unfortunately I sold mine a while back but am looking to get another, hopefully a 98-99 which has better front forks than mine had. Good luck on the build.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.
