Hi I have been searching for this technique using other material other than royal icing coz I don't want to waste the egg yolk! I am so glad your video popped in! I will definitely try this fondant brush technique! Count me in as a new subscriber! 😊
Wow! Thanks for this! I'm so scared with royal icing and I didn't know this is possible with sugarpaste. You are a genius! Now I ca finally try vrush embroidery and do dots on my cakes. Such great knowledge added to my cakey journey. Can't thank you enough!
I like the twist of using thin gum paste. Never seen it before. Very well explained. Loved the tip of the double line on the longest stroke, makes perfect sense.
Love watching everything you do this, thank you for sharing it, will be practicing , using sugarpaste. I'm addicted to patchwork cutters, so adaptable, even the little ballerina I've just used, can be posed differently.x
Beautiful, I love your work...great tutorial!! I am going to try the brush embroidery on my cookies with royal icing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!!
WOW thank you that was FANTASTIC. Your Camara work shows all the details brilliant. You have another subscriber. Love Marina from Newcastle upon Tyne England xx
Hi Martin, yes you can use royal icing, in fact it was royal icing that I originally used many years ago.You can create finer work with it and use a number two piping nozzle and a number 1 paintbrush, but sugarpaste and a larger brush is quicker :)
Hi Nermel, yes I think it is, although over here we use fondant to dip fancies but I would think you have the rolling out fondant. Doesn't it get complicated!!
Hi Julie, thank you for your lovely comments. This is perfect for a wedding cake and we will put an example in our new Cake Display 2 not sure when this will be available as we have only just put on Cake Display 1.
This looks amazing! If you wanted coloured flowers would it be better to do it with coloured sugar paste, or with white sugar paste dusted with coloured powder?
+Poppy Butler Hi Poppy, you can do both, coloured sugarpaste gives a more solid colour but dusting later can be more delicate. Try dipping the brush in a mix of dust colour and alcohol and brushing the colour on when working the icing. This gives a delicate finish and a white edge around the petals. This also looks great with royal icing and the Renshaw ready made royal icing is perfect.
Thank you Amy, glad you like our cutters! You can buy them directly from our website www.patchworkcutters.com. Alternatively, click on the 'Suppliers' tab at the top of our website for a list of suppliers near you.
For the sugarpaste I would leave the icing to dry for two to three hours before dusting. If you use royal icing then one hour would be sufficient time. It really depends on how warm the atmosphere is.
Hi Mildred, I have just tried it and it seems to be working ok here, we haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems so I am at a loss for what to suggest. All I can say is keep trying, sorry!
The sugarpaste will dry back to the same consistency as it was before the water was added. As with any icing it is only the moisture evaporating that dries it out. When it is dry you can paint it with a mix of alcohol and lustre dust. I use food grade isopropyl alcohol instead of normal alcohol as it dries so quickly. It must be Food Grade and state this on the bottle. If you are unable to use alcohol then try pure lemon extract as this also dries very quickly and is available from most health food shops.
Your cake look fabulous! I really want to give a try this type of decoration. Unfortunately I am new with all this brushes busines ( not cakes busines ;) ). Could you please advice what to buy- which brands of brushes you are using (dusting and no 6 is that all i need to know?) and if they have any specific names or something. Sorry to trouble you and I really hope you could advise me something in this matter. Thanks in advance
Hi Aquavita, you can use any numbered brush depending on the effect you are aiming for. A very fine brush such as a number (1) will give very fine detail, a number (3) will still be delicate but a number (6) will be bold with a deeper detail. Always remember long sweeping strokes and you won't go wrong ;)
This is probably a stupid question, but can you still achieve good outlines if you only have a thin star nozzle? I mean as the icing will be brushed out anyway? Thanks.
Thank you Maggie. You can buy our cutters on our website: www.patchworkcutters.com, find the Large Christmas Rose here: patchworkcutters.com/item/large-christmas-rose/131.
Mariahs Sidekick Hi guys, yes you can use rolled fondant, but if the one you use is too stretchy try a different brand or royal icing with a little piping gel added to slow down drying time. ( 1 teaspoon of gel to 4 tablespoons of royal icing )
I'm curious if you've tried this with white chocolate, or candy melts? I'm not a professional baker, but I want to try this technique with white chocolate on a ganache glazed flourless chocolate cake.
+Colleen McCullough I haven't tried this Colleen but if I were I would thicken my chocolate with a few drops of water ( see our Easter PDF tutorial on our website www.patchworkcutters.com) and pipe and brush the same as for royal icing or sugarpaste. The brush will need to be rubbed with a little vegetable shortening to prevent the chocolate from sticking. It can then be wiped clean and not rinsed in water. I need to have a play with this one :0)
I am disappointed she has not been able to answer you because I have the same question. Am also wondering if this can be done with other types of icing, buttercream in particular. As people will be able to tell, I know little to nothing about decorating, but am fascinated by it nonetheless.
carlos olguin before she thinned the sugar paste, the paste was just the same as gum paste. After she thinned it down and used it to pipe with it became royal icing. gum paste dries rock hard when left in its solid state. the royal icing will also dry hard but it is a lot more brittle because it was thinned down. you could also make royal icing with just powdered sugar and egg whites until you get your desired consistency
Gay Lyall you can try to use buttercream but it won't work well because it won't dry out like the royal icing will. instead it would melt and all your hard work will be wasted. royal icing is really east to make, just powdered sugar and egg whites mixed together until desire consistency. more whites will make it thinner, more powdered sugar will thicken it

The gum paste works best using one without too much stretch, that is the reason I use the Renshaw brand. Hope you enjoy trying it out.

Such clean work. Absolutely stunning. Thank you! Can you apply this technique to buttercream as well as fondant?
Hi Sally, thank you. I don't think it would work so well with buttercream but I will give it a try with Italian buttercream and let you know.
Beautiful 👍👍 thanks for sharing
Amazing tutorial! Very well taught!
Thanks a lot!
Is the brush embroidery only possible on a fondant covered cake?
Looks good on a royal iced cake and cookies, you could use royal icing as an alternative to sugarpaste for the brush embroidery.
Thank you Marion, that's so very lovely. x
Thank-you for sharing!! Enjoyed it very much.
Thank you, Terri !

Awesome! Thank you so much!
Very beautiful and immaculately done. I would like to do this too. How long is the drying period before brushing or painting on the colors?
For the sugarpaste I would leave the icing to dry for two to three hours before dusting. If you use royal icing then one hour would be sufficient time. It really depends on how warm the atmosphere is.
That is absolutely lovely. Thank you!
Hi Mildred, I have just tried it and it seems to be working ok here, we haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems so I am at a loss for what to suggest. All I can say is keep trying, sorry!

Beautiful work. How hard does the sugar paste set? Is it possible to colour it metallic using ggold lustre dust and alcohol, or is it too soft?

Great video thanks
Im confused, is it rolled fondant or gumpaste that you make flowers of? Gumpaste dries much harder than rolled fondant.

Can I use fondant for the sugar paste? Great video x
yes, it is the same thing.
Hi Ruby, yes rolled fondant is ok as long as it isn't too stretchy before adding the water.
can you use royal icing for the same effect?
Questions: where do you buy Sugar Paste/Brand and same thing with the Luster Dust - brand name and vendor? Thanks! Beauiful video.
Sorry for the late reply Rita, in the US I would try Global Sugarart or any vendor listed on our website.
