My old (1970) new (2023)

My young sister Melanie passed away last night, just had to listen to this 😘
I hope her spirit is resting easy in a good place, and that you are OK .. It's nice to have songs that help us remember our loved ones fondly .. All the best .. Wayne
@@wayne_twentyfive Thank you.
This guy had a ton of hit songs, and nobody even knows who he is. This one reminds me a lot of Rosemary.
The more I listen to Tony Burrows the more I listen to Tony Burrows. What a super-talented, handsome charmer.
I can't get enough.
The legend himself! This song should have been one of his many smash-hits!
Fantastic song and what a marvellous artist Tony Burrows was andn is!! I'm definitely a huge fan of this musical genius!! xoxox
Song penned by Tony Macauley and Barry Mason, who also penned "Love Grows Where my Rosemary Goes".
Love this song, what a talent Tony Burrows is!! Brilliant. :)
This guy Tony Burrows was born talented LOVE HIM !!!!
It goes without saying, yet I’ll mention it here anyway, this is absolutely a fantastic song. Legend really. 😁♥️
Tony burrows has to be one of the best singers of all time,.look at his record.
tony burrows a national treasure in the music industry..such a clear voice and vocal range a busy man responseable for many hits in a different guise ..good on you tony
Tony Burrows - surely no-one has been a one-hit wonder as many times as him!
Los comentarios hacen casi igual que. noescuchadomi musica gracias vvanderful.xxxx
Another super song from Mr Burrows, this is my favourite and takes me back when I first heard it at the Nevada in Bolton in the 70s
Mr Burrows is a super singer. A lot of talent until now.
I was so surprised at the time around June 1970 when this song didn't make any impact here in the UK charts especially as it was Tony Burrows' follow-up (as a solo-artist) to his hit with Edison Lighthouse 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)' which stayed at number 1 from the end of January - early March 1970 in the UK. I've always been a great fan of all his work (apart from the Pipkins' Gimme Dat Ding which I actually like now) and he should have much greater recognition for his talents.
holds a special place in my heart just for my daughter Melanie
Tony Burrows. Every girl was in love with him in the 70's
+Rosemary Davies Especially if she was named Rosemary!
Me Too
Gorgeous guy with gorgeous voice
This guy is awesome!
Tony Burrows sang background vocals in Elton's epic, "Levon". The 2 voices you will hear in the song are Elton's and his, only.
Thank you for posting this, loved it then and still do after all this time!!
What an Absolutely Great Song!!! Love It! 5*s Thankyou...Anita..
Thanks for such a great song! I feel as if I go back 16 years old.
I'm so pleased to see this on UA-cam, I think it was Tony Burrows' first solo recording after Love Grows in 1970. It should have been a big hit then but wasn't. Thanks poppinhoppy.
I love this song!... I don't remember hearing it here, in the states. It is a beautiful song, and it's too bad, that it didn't get airplay, all that much.
I just looked it up and it reached the 80s of the BB-HOT-100, so it was probably a hit in a few cities at the time.
I heard it in 1970 on WTIX, New Orleans' Top 40 station. I bought the record.@@pcno2832
What a fabulous singer, I love this track so happy, reminds me of my chopper bike and happy 70's summers. Thanks for sharing.
Fronting five different bands at the same time appeared on top of the pops twice in person and once on record. Same program in 1970
"I've Got You On My Mind" (Cook-Greenaway) was recorded by White Plains featuring Tony Burrows, and also by The Drifters, featuring Johnny Moore with backvoice of Tony Burrows.
This is a great song, Tony sings it just perfect one of my all time favourite songs
I love his voice.
i've been looking for this song everywhere.. so glad you have it on youtube..
I don't think it's Tony on 'I've Got You On My Mind' but he does sing 'My Baby Love's Lovin''. Tony Burrows and Ron Dante - magnificent!
Tony Burrows was not the lead voice on White Plains "My Baby Loves Lovin''. White Plains officially confirms it's Ricky Wolff singing lead on the song. Tony was doing backing on chorus.
The main voice on "I've Got You On My Mind'' was Pete Nelson.
All Tonys songs made you feel great. He was with so many bands because everyone wanted him to front them as he was so good. Please check out White Plains and Edison Lighthouse The latter was a fake band for visual purposes only. Tony sang Love grows where my Rosemary goes Please look it up as its so good.
im 58 and when i was young my sister Rosemary bought the single love tony
Oh I "LOVE-LUV" his singing voice, of course Tony Burrows, I always wished I knew more about his personal life, such as is he/was he married and if so how many children, I remember watching another video here of Mr. Burrows which was an
"interview and he mentioned that when the Edison Lighthouse/Where Love Goes,
Rosemary Grows record came out, that he was married with a family, how many children I wonder is he father of?, and if he is still married" .
man of many talent saw him 3/4 times on top of the pops quickley checked what beer i was drinking lol
Tony Burrows is one of the most worshipped men in the world.
I remember this song from 1970,radio 1 played it constantly, don't think it got very far in the UK charts.
Man of a thousand voices loved him
BELLO TONY😍😘
tony was a real machine to write hit bumble gum music.....and ,at this time it worked very well for him,and for his fans.
One that go away! Don't remember it but Paddy Mcdee played it last night. Excellent!
My cousin Tony married his girlfriend Melanie right around the time this song came out. In fact, this song was played at their wedding in 1970. They had been in love since they were teenagers and were considered somewhat of a super couple. Unfortunately, their happiness was short lived. Tony died of tescular cancer in 1973 at the age of 25.
man of many talents remember watching top of the pops he was on 4 times had to chech the beer i was drinking lol
My name is Melanie. 😳
Lovethis guy and all the bands in was inxx
Another Tony Burrows vocal hit.
It isn't a hit. #87
GREAT EFFORT TONY 🏆
It's lovely. I got a copy off Ebay. One I missed out on.
i allways thought any song tony released on his own should have charted with the sucses of lighthouse.white plains. brotherhood of man .flowerpot men. pipkins.... just shows the buying public of the early seventys

Tony Burrows was the Darlene Love of UK pop
It's funny that this familiar voice only hit #87 in Billboard, as a solo artist.
Tony Burrows - Take Away the Feeling - 45 rpm , search it on UA-cam. I sent the vinyl to my friend whopfrog months ago. The flip is "Lazy Weekend".
If anyone is sitting on a film clip or just the rpm version of Tony Burrow's "Take away the feeling", write me, befriend me, anything... LOL
I had it favorited here, but it's gone now and I simply can't find my favorite Burrows song anywhere :(
Please can you upload Tony Burrows I've still got my heart Joe cos its my mothers favorite :~)
This one cost me 7 bob from Mrs Langfords Electrical shop in Market Rasen, that's about 35 pence now. (can't do dollars!)
Yea good version but the Strangers nailed it ! Remember growing up in this era . . Great times . . . only remember the Strangers . .
Tony Burrows was in so many Bands at the one time I used to think there was more than one of him lol. Lots of number ones too! I do like Australian band The Strangers version of this song better though
There is no mention of Tony Burrows in the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles 575 pages as a solo artist there is no justice in that for Tony and Melanie Makes Me Smile would have been a big hit Tony hit the US Billboard Hot 100 with this song which peaked at number 87 in 1970 on the Bell record label number 1103 it failed to chart in the UK
To those who know Tony Burrows better than me: The guy singing in this video is the same guy singing "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes"?
It can't be the same guy, right?
Yes, he is - a lot (all?) of this video (not the song, obviously, but the video) is actually from "Love Grows" (see ua-cam.com/video/OqcDG_xLWPY/v-deo.html). In addition to Edison Lighthouse, he was also the lead singer for The Flower Pot Men on "Let's Go to San Francisco", White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'", "Gimme Dat Ding" by the Pipkins, "Beach Baby" by the First Class and "United We Stand" by The Brotherhood of Man. The first five were all "One Hit Wonders", but the Brotherhood of Man had other hits (including their Eurovision win) after Tony Left. All total he sang vocals on 100 Top 20 hits in the 1970s.
@@zork999 John Carter already clarified Tony Burrows did not sing on the original recording of Let's Go to San Francisco. It's John Carter actually sang lead on it. Ricky Wolff is the lead singer on My Baby Loves Lovin'. Tony Burrows sang backup on the chorus.
@Lorraine Jon - on the "My Baby Loves Lovin'" hit version by White Plains Tony Burrows is the double-tracked lead on the chorus. Ricky Wolff sings solo on the verses and "no more lonely nights" bridge.
Burrows absolutely dominates the chorus which is the main hook of the song.
I helped compile "The Voice of Tony Burrows" compilation CD for which we interviewed Tony as well as co-producer/co-writer Roger Greenaway. These are the people that made the record and our story is straight from them. A listen to Burrows' solo version reveals that the verse sounds nothing like the hit record but the chorus sounds virtually identical. That's why.
Listen for yourself. ua-cam.com/video/8nh3Opl5UOg/v-deo.html
I thought this was from Terry Williams of Kenny Rodgers and the First Edition. Terry sang it on that show I guess.
Patricia Carlyle yes! Great group too Kenny Rogers & The 1st Edition.
Is"Lazy Weekend". on UA-cam? I'd sure love to hear that one...
Many years ago I sent the vinyl record to a friend in the USA and he published it on youtube.
there was a much better version of this by Australian band The Strangers.
Has anyone got it please?
thanks
@kirbygene yep, same guy.
A better version is from the Australian group The Strangers.
Tony Burrows was so prolific.... a really good pop vocalist. Good old song although I agree the Aussie version by the Strangers (Terry Walker vocals) was probably superior, certainly a raunchier voice. Look up "Strangers, My Melanie" and judge for yourself.
Yes, Tony had an excellent voice that he used with professional discipline to sing the song as written. This is a good demo version to inspire someone to improvise, as The Strangers did with orchestration to great effect: ua-cam.com/video/BszOAMZitsA/v-deo.html
@Brian Vogt - this is good for being a demo by a disciplined pro singer for others to use to do a real version? You could have just said you liked The Strangers' version better. Instead you had to make a haughty, scathing and condescending comment about this gorgeous recording and his beautifully sung version of it. You realize this was just a while after his "disciplined" rendition of "Love Grows" topped the UK chart for weeks and was a Top 5 hit all over the world?. And that he managed four more huge hits under four more group names? I guess people were too busy enjoying the song to pay any attention to your gross rudeness and condescension.
@@souldeep69 Just learn Tony wasn't the lead voice on "My Baby Loves Lovin''. It's Ricky Wolff. Tony was doing background voice. And Roger Greenaway sang the lead vocals on Pipkins "gimme me dat ding". Tony was the one talking in gravelly voice.
@Chess Hanavas
I was actually a compiler on the Tony Burrows compilation "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - The Voice of Tony Burrows". Tony himself was involved in putting together the CD and provided much information about the tracks. Ricky Wolff was the lead singer on the verses and bridge of "My Baby Loves Lovin'", but on the chorus, Tony Burrows' voice is notably out front, enough to qualify him as a co-lead singer on the song. Burrows' voice absolutely dominates the chorus. The beauty and distinctively melodious sound of Tony's voice on that incredible chorus makes the record as great as it is.
Yes, he was the gravelly speaking accompaniment to Roger's falsetto on the Pipkins records - but yeah, it's him, and both performers made that song a hit.
Tony's beautiful singing on "Beach Baby", "Love Grows" and "United We Stand" in addition to these qualifies him for the legendary status he has earned.
u cant beat the strangers dont try i know i was there
Compare this with the Aussie version by The Strangers. Both are great but I know which I prefer.
Jeez!White guys were so pretty in those days. I can remember when practically every dude looked like this!
zenileon
AND THEY WEREN'T GAY!!!!
In the Pop Annual it`s spelled "MENANIE"??!!
I actually like this one better than the version by The Strangers.
I don't.
Strangers version is soo much better
yes it is his vocals on the strangers version are much better whoever he is.
Including Ivy League
The Australian version by The Strangers is better. Great song.
The Aussie group, The Strangers, had by far a better version
He's great, but I prefer the original by The Strangers.
the strangers is better version , more punchy
The Strangers version is far better
everyone wants to have their moment. Why the stupid intro? This is not a radio station. I guess when you're desperate for attention you will even ruin a good song
Barry Marino that is heartbreaking. Beautiful though they had this song to play at their wedding though.
