It happens but you shouldn’t be a dick like that guy. Just because your a mechanic doesn’t make you an expert in every single vehicle that was ever built. I should know I am a mechanic and own my own shop. I have had young kids straight out of school show me stuff I didn’t know about new vehicles. The guy in the story is just a dick and deserved to be ripped off like that.

That must be some shitty half ass mechanic. If I was a mechanic selling, what I think, is a junk car, and someone is willing to try to fix it and has enough integrity to pay me a fair price if they manage to fix it, I'd take them up on it. Because what do you really have to lose at that point? Either way, you're getting rid of the car and making some money off of it.

I mean, if my "friend" who I haven't seen or been close to in years (potentially for good reasons that I haven't been close), why should I let the significant other in?
The husband needs to be forward with his spouse. But it might just be that the friend doesn't trust the friends judgement in partners for reasonable reasons.

Story 4: yeah, in the USA family courts are insanely slanted in the woman favor always. It's so insane that the family courts will ordered that an abusive mother still have visitation even if she had been sent to jail for having abused her children. One of my cousins had to wage a half decade long court battle to finally have his ex-wife stripped of visitation rights after multiple investigated and proven reports of her abusing his kids. She went to jail twice for it and yet the social workers still were pushing her to get visitation rights.

MY brother got full custody of his son when his ex was found to be unfit. Her house was trash, she was doing dominatrix (plus extra) work in the home, living with a 2-time felon (dog fighting) that was barred from owning dogs, yet they were raising pit-bulls, and drugs were found in the home. He went to pick his son up from daycare and they had all ready turned him over to the mother. Years later, with the help of a private investigator, they found her living across the state. Legally she had kidnapped him, but they state declined to press charges. My brother fought for the return of his son, but she fought it in court until he aged out of the system at 18.

Another horrible situation is in Florida if a child was born during the marriage and you divorce later you’re still stuck with child support even if she cheated and you prove via paternity test finding out later it’s not your kid you’re still forced to pay because you were married at the time. I can relate to that first story. Being a mechanic myself, I like looking for cars for sale. I found myself a 1969 Dodge Charger (like the General Lee) that supposedly had a blown head gasket and the transmission was shot. The guy only asked a thousand for it. I messaged him and bargained with him that if i could get it running, I'll take it for half price. He agreed. The next day, i went down to his shop, and the car looked amazing. Turns out, he was dead wrong. The only thing wrong with the transmission was that the gear timing was off because the gears weren't the right size. As for the Engine? Not a single problem other than not enough gas. I told the guy I got it running, and he demanded $50,000.. I'm like: "F you buddy" so I gave him the $1000 (decided to be nice) and drive off. I still have that charger to this day..

Both myself and my father both have personally stories very close to the 1st story. Although in both of our cases we both got kinda screwed and didn't get our cars.
In my father's story one his work associates bet my dad $100 that he couldn't fix his old Ford pickup with a weird engine vacuum problem that my dad was able to fix in 20 minutes. The guy didn't honor that bet.
And in my case I was able to track down a mysterious electrical problem in a 3 year old Mazda my aunt decided to sell to me for a few hundred. I bought that car for my mother to help her get back on her feet after my step dad died. We had an agreement that mom would pay me back and give me the car once she got back on her feet. Well, it took 2 days of work but I was able to correct a serious of electrical faults that were causing the issues. First off my aunt tried to go back on the deal since I basically only paid $400 for a car she paid almost $10K for. But the title was already in my moms name by that time. But I never even got my $400 or the car, because about a year and a half later my mom remarried and the guy she married decided to just sell the car I was letting my mom use _and_ my teenage brothers cars. Because Clint was kind of a POS and mom was too much a doormat to stand up to him. Both the Mazda and a car my little brother car were in her name so it was our word against hers.

Story 2: first mistake, working for McDonald's. I was verbally threatened, overworked, and mentally abused while working there. I even got extremely sick one day and was told I had to finish out my shift. For information, I was described as being white as a sheet and I was nearly blacking out as I requested a moment to go to the bathroom. Upon reaching it, I prayed to the porcelain goddess as they say for 10 minutes. I almost didn't get permission to do this and my vision was getting dark as I spoke to the manager and while in the bathroom. Once I came back, I explained my situation and they said I should finish out my shift. Yes it was only 1 hour to 30 minutes, but were talking about I just got very sick at work and I worked directly with the food. I was allowed to do some minor tasks in the break area until I left and had no leaving chores, but I felt uncomfortable they wanted me anywhere near that kitchen, and I still had to return the following day. I was better within an hour or so of the incident, so my family figured I got too hot while at work which is very uncommon for me. I was often berated for being too slow, and I was but I had never worked before and I don't agree with the speed over quality and accuracy idea that McDonald's has. Make the food right the first time, not completely wrong and too quickly because you want to service over 50 people a day.

To kind of emphasize on the second story here, I also happen to work at a McDonald's and I hate it there. I was training this coworker who's been there longer than me and I got promoted to Crew Trainer before he did. This pissed him off as he saw me to be the one trying to ruin his future in this franchise. I told him no he would have to work harder and do more for the job. He then stormed off and management had a talk with me on how it was my fault any of this happen. About a week later he got his friend to sign up and they made my life a living hell in that work place. They both would actively criticize me for being Jewish and make fun at the fact I wanted to join the military which I signed on to the Marine Corp. They would actively harass me in front of my managers who did nothing but tell him to stop. It wasn't until my coworker walked out and later his friend found out and blamed it on me. I told my shift manager who I'm really good friends with that she needs to stop this as this has been going on for far too long. She said she'll right up my coworker which she did and as a result the next day this guy walked out on his shift. It amazes me that during this time McDonald's management refused to do anything. My manager fought non stop to try and get them both fired but it wasn't until they did something that hurt management that got them fired. McDonald's is a shit hole and I don't recommend it as a first job or a job to go career with. They pay poorly and will hire literally anyone including criminals who have a very bad criminal record. I still happen to work there as my schedule is a lot stricter so I can't get a new job at the moment, but this company truly fucking sucks. I have so many fucked up work stories about this company too. I've been there 2 years almost 2.5 years and it's just a massive shit hole.

Child support one happened to my brother. He was paying because he thought he was the kids father. When he found out he wasn’t he stopped paying and took her to court. The judge said since he has been paying for so long he was a defacto parent so he needed to keep paying or go to jail. He went to jail over it several times because he refused to get a normal job and have his wages garnished. Eventually he started his own painting business and it took him years to pay back the back pay so he could get licensed and bonded. He had to pay until the kid turned 18 never got a dime back.

The car mechanic is the same as someone who sold a run down house with everything stripped out of it for $20k, then comes back a year later after the new owners put a few hundred thousand into fixing it, and demanding $600k, because they didn't know how to fix up the house and didn't have the money before.

My brother dropped by gave it a quick once over and said that it was probably an ECU problem and he would be back later with his equipment. He didn't need to return because this guy looked up a solution on youtube, There was a small fire and the car was a write off.

This guy was constantly complaining about this or that, example we had a customer who changed their order after this guy started their food and yelled loudly that it didn’t make sense why the customer would do that, this guy claimed he never swore but in the next and previous sentences he swore and he was finally fired after he grabbed a female coworkers wrist she called the gm and the gm came in a few minutes later and fired him on the spot

The woman in story 3 needs to see about moving back in with her family if she has any until she can get back on her feet. If that's not a possibility since she's disabled she needs to apply for disability, EBT & any other resources she's entitled to like state run housing, section 8 or any type of shelter that will get her out of that car until she can get her own place. That's just ridiculous, the husband clearly doesn't care abt her the way he should. The whole she can't even go in the apt. to take a shower or use the bathroom is despicable just bc "they don't know her well" makes it seem like something shady & untoward is going on. As for the last story if I were that guy I would also look into suing that judge bc what she did is not only heinous but illegal. She shouldn't have just lost her judge title, she should've been completely disbarred. Unfortunately what she did happens all the time where a man can be forced into paying child support for a child that isn't his if he took on what is considered to be a fatherly role, but usually that only happens when the actual father isn't there to take on the financial responsibilities. The woman who took him to court is horrible, but it's not the least bit surprising that judge, tho excuse me lawyer she's worse than dog crap on the bottom of your shoe & that's an insult to dog crap. Idk how she's still being allowed to practice law, even more astonishing is how she got an advisory position seeing as how she clearly knows jack abt the law.

The last story, i would be suing the judge too for blatant personal bias, i know it sounds sexist to assume a female judge will always side with a female platiff but in this courtcase it sounds like that was what happened. By the judges logic if a mother with baby lives in a house share with other tenants then the mother has the right to claim child support from all those tenants? As they technically financially helped her and helped keep her to a standard of living. 🤔

My dad and grandfather on his side are huge gearheads as are some of my friends and just people I grew up around so I grew up around a lot of mechanics and the like. Some of the insane attitude some mechanics can have when it comes to their ego is just well...insane. They seem to think they are the absolute experts in everything car, and when someone comes along making another suggestion or telling them something that contradicts what they think, they dismiss it out of hand. They also look down on average everyday people that do not know these things about cars. To the point where they actually joke about ripping them off or tricking them with jargon and other things.
Now this is not all mechanics of course, but I have met quite a few, and a look behind the curtain of that industry and what the people I have met have talked about doing, and their general attitude toward "normies" is, I really think this profession needs to be audited more or something.
I was very glad to hear that first story.
