The 2019 Nissan Maxima SR is NEW but is it BETTER?

- The Nissan Maxima SR is NEW for 2019. Nissan did a mid-cycle refresh with all new design to the front and rear of the exterior. Inside there are very subtle changes that bring a very upscale feel. The SR trim package takes the style and performance to the next level. Did NIssan do enough to make car buyers want to drive one home today? Check out all the details on what Nissan calls their 4-door sports car.

I have leased a mess of Maximas and other Nissan cars since 93. Never had a problem with the CVTs with any cars. I bought my 2019 Max lease because there's nothing out there to buy or lease. I like evaluations like your honest judgements about cars you test. I am happy to own my 2019 Maxima SL
You’re the best commentator about talking about cars. Thank you for being such a great spokesman and letting us know everything about the car. The good and the bad that’s great. I’m glad to listen to you before I buy a car really helps me decide whether I buy it or not. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Very honest report. I have 2019 SL and I appreciate your comments about the car. This is my 8th Maxima.
I've got 2016 max in the family. Always thought it was an amazing looking and overall great car but this refresh makes it even better. Maxima is def one of those cars you need to see in person to appreciate
I totally agree with you! Plus I really love the interior of it!
I like how they made it more aggressive and wonderful it is. I can tell Nissan is stepping up their game.
So very true! My favorite part was the interior!
So far has been a great car and over 31 mpg on the highway easily with 300hp. In the city really have to coax it to get 20 0r better. But a great car and no issues so far.
I just got this exact car in the same color and trim model 2 weeks ago. Only difference is I got it with the premium package. Absolutely love it. Get so many compliments and I cannot wait to drive it in the summer!
Congrats Ron! I hope she brings you plenty of smiles per miles!
I have always been a Maxima fan. My Aunt has had 2 in her lifetime and I loved both of them. ❤️ The Maxima is everything I want in my next vehicle. A sporty, sinister look with plenty of power under the hood mixed with the comfort & convenience of a 4 door sedan. Every one I see on the road catches my eye! It’s nice to see comfort & performance in the same vehicle. Just because I NEED 4 doors and a trunk capable of carrying groceries doesn’t mean I want boring & lackluster. 😜 I enjoy your reviews & this one just sealed the deal for me! Thank you! ❤️
My first road trip car rental was a 2018 Máxima, I fell in love with this car. Smooth fast ride and luxurious look. One day I plan on picking one up.
I totally agree with you! Thank you for sharing your input from your experience!
Had a 95 maxima. Awesome car. 195,000 miles and was still going!
Thanks for sharing that great info!
I had mine 99 sr with 250.xxx miles and still sold it for 2000$
@@z1ggyn124 Great car but I think you meant se not sr
I like the cvt in my maxima sr and don’t understand why everyone hates on them. I somewhat feel like car enthusiasts are being a little snobby about it or jumping on the band wagon of it’s not real gears or cool. My opinion is the maxima is a little above the accord and Camry with its interior design, layout and overall feel. It has a great center console and makes the driver seat feel like a cockpit. I’m speaking from the view of the SR midnight edition I have so it might be different in an SL or SV even though the cars are all very similar.
I really like the way that you discuss pros and cons of vehicles. You are well versed on design features inside and outside of the vehicle, the mechanics underneath the hood, and how the vehicle handles along with how the design can be improved upon. Thank you for being informative!! Buying a vehicle is a major decision and you need to be well informed, before you purchase one.
Thank you so much for saying that and your fantastic support!
Maxima fan since 2011.
I am so glad that you liked this one!
Maxima fan since 2005😊
Maxima fan since 96
Maxima life, baby! +1 for the Maxima fan club :)
Here also. I have a 7th gen. I want the 8th gen but I don’t want a cvt anymore so I’m still believing they will come with a regular transmission one day.
If you want instant response, put it in sport mode. I honestly find this gearbox more responsive than the 8-9 speed gearbox. It has better throttle response, and does not need to wait to downshift.
Also, it is not supposed to be a sports car. It is a comfortable full size car.
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
I'm absolutely loving my brand new 2022 Nissan Maxima SV! I love the cvt in it to. I have zero interest in owning a traditional automatic ever again.
If they put a DCT it would make the car $50k and that puts it in some fierce competition. They don't sell very many Maxima's now (60K a year in 2015), if you put it in the same class as BMW, Audi, and their own Infinity brand they will sell even less. Now its priced to compete with high end Toyotas and Hondas. When you learn to drive the CVT and it does really make the most out of your engine. People whine about how it doesn't have gears or shifts but the thing holds you in peak torque the WHOLE TIME. That's what its supposed to do. The pushed back in your seat feeling never lets up like a normal automatic or manual so the sense of speed is crazy. These things are sluggish off the line yes but are monsters at highway pulls. Lastly 300bhp is a lot of power for a FWD vehicle. If they added more they would have tons of torque steer and grip issues. Most car engineers say that 280-310bhp is the most fwd cars can handle before needing wider and sticker tires that screw with the suspension set up.
I appreciate your feedback and perspective!
Agree with what you said! The Maxima is very fast off the line though. The CVT is oriented for a smoother and more efficient drive. Here are dragy acceleration results.

Well said
Very well stated.
Because of the gas mileage restriction, most auto companies are going to GDI engines, but after a certain amount of time the valves carbon up. To kind of help keep this from happening, they are going to GDI (AND) port fuel injection. Now you have 2 things that can go wrong, ad a turbo paired to an in-line 4 cylinder which most car companies do now and you have 3 things to worry about now. Nissan took a virtually bullet proof naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and put it to a CVT that is actually one of the better ones you can get. Don’t confuse this with the Mirano’s CVT, this thing ratchets you up to 60 in 5.7 seconds.
Ditch the cvt and make it a nismo and you got yourself a deal
Now you are talking!
Luis CVT is fine. I love it. Will not look back at an automatic. Maybe I have to drive it more. But first time I fell in love.
JWiLLfoReaL I agree I love the cvt too
Can’t forget AWD!
One thing you won't be able to attain in other large cars is 38 mpg on the highway. Maxima will surprise you on long trips. The fuel mileage is astounding for it's size
That is a very good point! Thanks for watching!
Exactly, that's all point of having 6 cylinders engine with a CVT transmission to be fuel efficient. I believe the Maxima give the best of the two worlds, it's not a supercar but it feels sporty, fast and it a great car for a daily driver.
@@ynegra0481 I agree
Hi Joe, how have you been?
This was the best video I've seen of this car since it was updated several months ago. I congratulate you again for your excelent work.
Thanks for this video.
Greetings and see you soon.
Hi Alexander! I am doing really well! How is life treating you?
That is really wonderful of you to say! I really felt like people have forgotten about the Maxima. Thank you for your wonderful words and for allowing me to bring this car to you! You are so very welcome!
Love the MAXIMA!! We've had four throughout the decades. Ultra reliable, fun and spacious...and best of all: It's not a Camry!!!
I appreciate you sharing your input and perspective! Thank you so much for watching!
I have the 2018 Maxima SR midnight edition and I love it.
I have a 2016 SR and, aside from a harsher ride, no complaints.
@@fidelbanuelos9601 I too have a 2016 SR. and I agree. Honestly, the SR is the most deserving of the 4DSC badges they hide in the head and taillight lenses!
Nice, fair review. Love the Maxima. I have a '17SL. Best car I have ever owned. The 300hp CVT coupled with the overall exterior and interior treatments clinched the deal for me. In my opinion, with the 2019 they messed up the very fluid front lines of the previous 2016-2018 models. Not as aerodynamic looking. Also, too much fake plastic air inlets in the grill. The chrome accent on the bottom of the front end spoils the manta ray look of the 2016-2018. Sides are identical. I do like the new rear end treatment however. For those of you who like to knock the CVT, well all I can say is you have never driven a 300hp CVT. With buried gas pedal, she takes off at any speed like a cat with scalded balls! The CVT responds instantly with none of the old "rubber band" effect of the old 4 bangers.
I appreciate you sharing your input and perspective! Thank you so much for watching!
2016 SR owner here. I completely agree. These cars are Rocketships once you learn the CVT operation. I also prefer the look of the 2016-2018 model lineup's front end.
Same I love my 2016 sr more than this one I agree
You're right. The cvt in the Maxima is spot on! People just don't know.
This will be my first car! Amazing job Joe.
I've always liked the Maxima
They are really nice, especially the interior!
Raiti's Rides yes,I was impressed when I test drove one in 2017
Yes amazing, only down fall is the cvt lol
forza388 the CVT isn't really a disadvantage in my opinion...I would prefer to have a regular transmission, but people just like to bitch for no reason you know? If I don't like something I'm not going to talk about it
@@ALEX-sh3tx bro you're paying 48000 canadian for a car that doesnt have dual clutch like the germans !
Had a 2010 maxima with cvt 150,000 miles and not one issue. I since upgraded to the 2016. Alot of people don't want to admit that the only thing they don't like about the cvt is the noise it makes and thats really if you floor the peddle or drive it like a race car which is why I would guess its mostly teenage kids complaining about the cvt.
Thanks for sharing that great input from your ownership!
I have a 16. Reason why I stopped by. Just wanted to say I love your presentation. Very detailed on the body lines, etc. I notice half the thing you described when waxing.
I was just impressed that's all. You have to be a sales guy lol. Shit. I felt like you sold me the car, I want it now. I just my 16 a month ago too. Thanks again.
Hey Julio! That is so awesome of you to say! The great thing is I'm not a sales guy, just someone who love to share their passion for cars with others! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
I have a 2019 max and love this car
The interior looks really perfect.
I couldn't agree more!
The best car reviews. Thank you Sr Raitis
I think Nissan did a good job with the styling of the Maxima. They need to upgrade the engine.
My 2014 Silverado has a foot e brake.
I feel like you showed your age when mentioning the high beam switch being on the floor... lol.
As always, great review. Very detailed.
I appreciate you input! I don't mind showing my age because there is a lot of experience that comes with it! ;-)
The engine is awesome! They don't need to upgrade the engine they need to upgrade the Transmission!
I had a 2018 S model as a loaner for a week and was so shocked to have fallen in love with it. The interior quality was WAY above my expectations especially for the base model (all the same leather dash and doors, just seats are cloth). I found leaving it in Drive Sport was the best for hooning it too. On a long straight this new CVT pulls very well all the way to its limited 135-138 mph top speed. Sadly the CVT is very loose feeling in this model even compared to early CVT maximas. My friend has an 09 SV Sport (essentially that gen’s SR) and the CVT in it simulated gears much better. It actually has a slight shift shock and gives you that sensation of a traditional automatic transmission. Hell, his will chirp the tires from a roll shifting from 1-2 under WOT.
I got this same car but it’s the Pearl White color. The Pearl White really makes the black on the car really pop. I wish the Maxima, Nissan, and SR badges on the back were blacked out though.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your Maxima!
Criticize the Maxima for its CVT, nissans invested so much into making a great CVT it’ll take a lot for them to switch back to a traditional automatic. It doesn’t have AWD but if you compare it to its competitors, most of them don’t offer AWD, and those that do, their sales aren’t showing much of a difference. Now you said the maximas steering was not great but I’ve been behind the wheel of an SR and I think it’s steering and handling is great for its class. Every car has their advantages and disadvantages, but the Maxima has a reliable V6 that nissans been using for years and has proven reliability for years, it’s quick for a 0-60 in about 5.7 seconds, and it sounds great. This car has a lot going for it, if you think the car looks nice from the exterior to interior, I wouldn’t hate you for buying it standard with a CVT. Everyone seems to be very one sided with the Nissan Maxima, I just wanted to share the pros against the cons.
The whole driving experience coming out of a turn and getting on the gas was not fun in this car.
Amazing 👌
if you want to know if the car is good and reliable use for Uber. I rented Maxima for Uber, and ooh, man, best car out there. I drove for 12 hour shift for 30 days. And this car, drive smooth, very good on highway gas. I plan to buy the new one and use for Uber. I plan to put 200K miles within 5yrs.
Chris Gnay cvt aint a bad transmission
Altima 2019-2020 Has AWD on CVT 👎
I also like the pearl white on this car which I have on my maxima
It really pops in the sun!
I love my new Maxima !!
Had a foot e-brake in my 2010 Nissan Altima, and also have one in my 2016 Kia Sedona van. Works out just fine and doesn't ruin the console.
I'n just so surprised because so many other cars have electric e brakes!
This needs a nismo package but with an actual power bump
I totally agree with you!
You don't want much more than 300 hp on a FWD car, torque steer is a bi-atch.
At least 30 more hp with a tune you can get to that
I love this review! And my gawd that maxima looks ❤️🔥😭❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the compliment and I am so glad that you love it!
Good review Joe! I like the Maxima but have to agree with you on the CVT. Big zonk!
Plus a little more power would be nice. Keep up the great work and I’ll continue to watch.👍👍
I am so glad that you liked this one! I totally agree with you! I will keep them coming!
I used to have a 2017 and just got a 2019 last week same color and with the dual panel sunroof it is great and I love it grabs lots of attention
Congrats! I am so glad that you like this one!
Love your videos. Love your passion for cars. I remember when the maxima had 190hp in the 90’s was killer. Was verging into the luxury category long time ago. But as enthusiast, I feel Nissan is dead. I don’t know one person in my circle of friends that would ever consider this car. Nissan sadly is like the Acura story. Acura and Honda have come back strong in the past 2-3 years. Nissan is just fading into the abyss. Keep up the great reviews.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate you taking the time to say those things! You are spot on! It seems like Nissan had all this focus on the GTR and let everything else slide! They need to bring back the excitement! FAST!
You do a great job demonstrating the rides and their features..thanks!!

I really appreciate you saying that!
I just really wish there was a NISMO to this car! It’s even on the Sentra and versa note in Japan!
I totally agree with you! Especially if it has AWD and 400 HP!
Raiti's Rides,
It actually does have AWD but on a different version......
It would also be nice if it was FR ( front engine, Rear wheel drive). What do you think?
That would be fun, and add an additional 100 HP!
Raiti's Rides ,
EXACTLY
I like the design of the new maxima good review too, make more reviews for gtr r35 👍🏼
I will get that together for you Victor!
This car is beautiful
Just picked up a 2019 Maxima Platinum. I will say, even with the dual moonroof option, I have quite a bit of head room at 6'2". I would say they should upgrade the engine, but 300hp with 30mpg for my commute is about as much as I can ask for. If they offered a manual transmission the car would be completely perfect for me. Maybe if this CVT ever gets tired and dies, I can figure out a way to swap one in from a NISMO or something. Thanks for the great review!
You ever swap out your cvt for a 6 speed, it's about a $5,000 project getting one out of a 2007-2012 V6 altima
I have a 2017 maxima and i love it.
I am so happy to hear!
Best Review for the Maxima ever brother. Nice job 😎
I'm also a powerlifter, and I own a 2017 Maxima SR 😊
Very cool Jeff!
Please start showing us what the new daytime running lights look like, what the turn signals look like, and the brake lights. Headlights & taillights are so much more different than they were 10 years ago, they are starting to look like an art form of lights.
I will put that together for future reviews! Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you Joe. Totally agree.
Just looked at my comment and had a wth happened moment? Sorry for the duplication of same. When originally writing it the computer had a "blink" and it appeared as though my original comment was "blinked" out of existence. I guess I ended up being in two places at the same time. I own a J30 V6 3.0. I just love the manual gearbox. If this Maxima had the GTR's gearbox, or the 370Z 6 speed manual it would be a big hit. Looks fantastic sad it is only available in the US... If the Mazda 6 is in Europe the Maxima can also be here.

For the tune of around $5,000 you can swap out the cvt for a 6 speed out of a 2009 or so Altima. There are several 7th gen Maxima 6 speeds out there
Damn they seemed to make it look better every year!

I’m not a car fan but this exact maxima made me fall in love with it. The color is just right and the rims matching the mirrors, fake fork vent , taillights and front grill of the vehicle... And the little wing /spoiler on the truck makes it much lovable ! Four exhaust ?? V6 too?? I’m getting that for the wife definitely 😅... was that coolant dripping out of the exhaust? That was horrifying

I have always been a fan of Nissan. We had a 2003 Infiniti i35 and a 2005 G35. Both were excellent. What are your thoughts on Nissan?
As a company they seem to be trying create a resurgence! It will be interesting to see what happens!
Still the good first sedan I want to buy one.
Wow that Maxima looks Hot! The CVT trans killed for me.
The Maxima is a great car, but it still needs the following to steal more than 40k from me:
*Bigger screen, tesla style with Android. They should partner with google to bring an stock version of Android to the head unit.
*Give us an option for regular Automatic Gearbox, and another option for people who want Manual Transmission. hey, its an SR version, c'mon Nissan!
*Rear Wheel Drive and AWD as an add on. Torque steer in the Maxima is a let down.
*small turbo. it will add a few horse powers, but will create the structure to be able to make the most out of this car.
Thats how I see myself paying 40 or 50k for this car.
Very well said! I wish we could send that to Nissan!
Excellent review
It has always been a great car for Nissan, agree with you on the zonks, like you said more power. I have to say it anyways, It will always be beaten by Toyota. Great video Joe, 👍

Not a huge Nissan fan, but awesome review! Speaking of the foot e-brake, have you seen a car with a button dimmer switch on the floor? My dad had a car with a foot operated dimmer switch. If I remember correctly, it was an early 80's Buick.
Yes sir I have! Many of the cars from the past had them. It is funny how they disappeared. I was shocked to see the foot actuated e-brake..
LOVE the manual ebrake!
Great review and fun looking car!
Thank you Jacob! The only thing that hurt this car was the driving experience from the CVT!
great review... Really enjoyed it

Another Zonk for me is it not having AWD. you can get the new Altima with AWD but not the Maxima!? That's a deal breaker for me. Nissan has to definitely up their game in that department. and your right Joe,they need to add more horsepower. At least 325.
325 hp. with AWD would definitely make me a buyer. But until then...
Can we add our own mods to make it more hp ?
Front end has alot going on, maybe it will grow on me. Over all love the car and it’s 300hp
I can totally understand where you are coming from. The interior was my favorite part!

Amber Allry yes they do the headlights are standard on all maximas. The Fog lights are only on SR and Platinum now
