Alas, I had a less powerful microphone back then, when I did Iron Hands, and was a lot less experienced. We are striving for constant improvement on the channel at the moment. Sound first, which seems to be going ok, slowly getting there. Later it will be images. A personal bugbear of mine, as I am absolutely tragically bad on a computer. So graphics and visuals will only ever be the best I can get them. Apologies, but I think the old videos show our journey as a channel, as a community. Maybe one day I will go back and upgrade the old ones, but that won;t be soon. Too much lore to impart. Badly, but hopefully fun! :)

I like the concept that they are resurrected Astarties from Istvan v into the human webway. It would explain why when they are encountered they seem to be from multiple different Legions. In some ways it seems as though they are resurrected Marines that have ascended to "Imperial demon Hood". They don't seem to appear or disappear in the same way that other demons do. They usually require rituals or portals to enter the materium. The Legion of the Damned don't they just appear. This seems more like they are coming from a webway then the warp itself. The Saints seem to do much the same thing. I like this idea because it doesn't seem likely to me that the emperor would leave his human webway project unfinished. It took him maybe a hundred years to build the thing. Magnus did damage it. But I don't think the emperor could go ten thousand years without attempting to fix it. And it would explain why two of his primark's seem to disappear. He resurrected the iron hands primarch in the webway then Dorn seemed to vanish into the Imperial Palace which had the only physical way into the webway. What do these two primark's have that would make them useful after the web way has been repaired. They are both engineered and specialised for the purpose of building and constructing infrastructure. The iron hands Primark was designed to be a superhuman machinist and engineer. Dorn was designed to be a superhuman architect and structural engineer. If the emperor was going to create a backup plan that required the use of the webway he would need it to be capable of handling a large number of humans. Perhaps a loyal Imperium worth of humans maybe even their loyal worlds. It has been shown that the Eldari have a sun inside their webway. I don't see why the emperor would think smaller than the knife ears. But he would still require his best engineers and Architects to create a structure for such things and an infrastructure for the people. Not to mention the defense of such a huge project. I could see those two primark's taking thousands and thousands of years doing that work especially since they were obsessively loyal. It would also be a good place for his birth scream as a god. Using it in such a way he could cleanse it of any remaining enemy influence. Maybe some small warp demon residual effect remaining inside of it. It would also hide his Ascension to full godhood from the rest of the Galaxy. Maybe even mask it from the entities in the warp. He may have already ascended to full godhood and nobody noticed. In short maybe in opposition to the ruinous Powers the emperor has actually constructed what the citizens of the Imperium would consider a heaven for them. And has been engineering it to be truly massive and well-protected. It seems odd that in some stories extremely loyal soldiers and Marines seem to vanish after their ordeals. Maybe the emperor recruited them to this heavenly host to add to its defenses.
Came here after watching your Fall of Cadia vid (excellent work as always btw). Sounds really cool, but I think these guys would need to be pretty heavily regulated in the tabletop to prevent being an "Always Win" button. Maybe some restriction like they can only appear once for a few rounds per game or psyker units can banish them? Playing against an army that can't be beaten wouldn't be very fun
A young 13 year old me painted a space marine from the Warhammer 40k box in Legion of the Damned livery. Nearly 25 years later I've bought my first 5 models and painted one so far (Death Company Intercessors since you asked). May have a crack at it again if I start getting better at painting. I cannot get enough of the Damned Legion, after finally getting ahold of some models I cannot wait to bring their Awesome power to the battlefield, and I absolutely love your voice
Amazing video as always brother Baldermort, the Legion of the Damned are one of the key tools at the Emperor's disposal, and I agree with you that they represent the Emperor's apotheosis into a true deity of the Warp. Though, I'm not sure it will occur any time soon, as I believe that for Him to become a true god requires that His physical body dies. My theory is thus: The Emperor's body will likely die as Abaddon is in the Sanctum Imperialis, intent on destroying the Emperor once and for all, succeeding where Horus failed. Dante (giving in to the Black Rage) will fight Abaddon, as the greatest son of the angel fights the greatest of the Sons of Horus and I believe, history will repeat itself in a tragic twist, and Dante will die. However, thanks to Dante's sacrifice, the Emperor will finally decide that He can no longer be just a man and give in to godhood - the ultimate sacrifice for the man that decried religion as the greatest of evils. He will ascend, Terra will be destroyed thanks to the Talisman of Seven Hammers and Chaos pantheon will be in balance as the first of the pantheon of Order will ascend. Just a wild guess, but I suppose that is all theories are at the end of the day.
Thank you for sharing your vision, brother Potato. I do like it, but it deviates from my own a bit. But then, that is most of the fun isn't it? You never know -I may well borrow some of this imagery for future tales if you have no objections. After all, if it aint broke, why fix it? :)
@@Baldermort Well the most fun in the lore comes from discussion! I know the problem with my viewpoint, that it focuses solely on the battle between humanity and the forces of the ruinous powers. Considering that there are so many threats to the imperium outside of chaos. I cannot wait to hear your take on the ending of Warhammer 40k, I know my problem is that I focus too much on Imperium vs Chaos, so I want to see how you deal with that.
@@tyrstead5872 I second this, Baldermorts' narration oozes grim dark. LT & 40k are both insightful but not a patch in terms of the theatre of delivery.

I actually did a prognostication (shudders) for Sisters stating I wanted this and it would be a good idea. But then, I hoped sisters would be able to summon LotD like chaos summon daemons. Ah well. Maybe one year. :)
@@zacharylopez8683 How would you model that? Really the idea of a primarch leading the LotD would have to be Sanguinous. Flaming wings and all. He is the Emperor's Angel after all. Perfect to embody the hopes and dreams of humanity.
@@Baldermort always a pleasure, i am in the middle of playing the 3rd installment of a 10 year campaign . First part was about guardsmen, and their fall to chaos. Second part about a group of deathwatch who became almost demi primarchs and held the second council of Nicaea. that redacted the emporer´s words about no more librarians. and shamed the black templers. Before they went into the black library... Third is about a group of acolytes who have been picked by the the former space marines to carry on the emporers work. The group is comprised of ( a sanctioned feral world psyker, a spirehunter from necromunda, a sister of battle from the golden light , and a commisar with speciality in necrons.. Main premise of the story is the "star child" :) as you also had picked up. Our campaign is alot in line with what you talk about in the videos. (timeline is before the fall of cadia leading up to the fall)
they are the first Marine "legion" that I painted and won my first painting contest with those figs, and never lost a battle with them, but this was back in the late 80's or so... In lore they are still my fav, besides Custodes... If they come back, I am DEF getting these guys, just to much of my WH40K history is with these guys...
Legion of the Damned, the Emperors answer to the saying of fight fire with fire. The enemy summons demons, well looks like the Emperor is summoning his own demons. They are technically demons or warp spawn entities.
Deathwatch were indeed a unit from the Blood Anges that you could take and produce absolute *insane* assault groups with. I was pissed when they moved to being an army because it was a nerf to BA's and messed up my army (not that I play at all these days). I would *love* to see a Legion of the Damned faction (only keep them to the smaller scale because the Emperor didnt make Primaris marines, he made Astartes and Adeptus) - particuarly anything that deviates from the standard marine in a new paint job (like Spae Wolves and all their viking-bling)
I painted a squad of them in the 90s, so fun! They are very grim dark! There was once a white dwarf with a great feature on this army and had a special character who could use a magical skull to siphon life and resurrect a fallen legionary. The bikers looked like Ghost Rider. It would be great to see them get some new love by GW.
May i ask what video you did on your thoughts for the end of the 40k universe please. I play all in your playlists and cant always find the corresponding videos. Yet another great video, i do so enjoy when you talk about the more hushed parts of the lore...
Fantastic into story as always brother 👍. You have a talent of making every existing faction sound cool and these are awsome. They would make a cool and deadly kill team. Time for some conversions 😉 also...they kind of remind me of Spawn
If they are a massive legion comprised of space marines who fell in battle over many centuries, then it would fitting that they be led by not one, but by two primarchs who also fell in battle. The two being sanguinius and ferrus manus. So that when the blood angels or iron hands or any of their chapters are in battle, the legion of damned would come to their aid with their respective fallen primarchs leading that undead legion.
Back in 2nd edition, a friend of mine converted his entire blood angel army into the legion, extrapolating changes based on that white dwarf article. It was horrible to fight a near company's worth of damned marines, nobody wanted to play him much after that. Did a good paintjob though, the flaming land raider looked great.
I'm a big fan of the Imperial Daemons theory for LotD, and I believe that the Sisters of Battle Order of the Golden Light also are Imperial Daemons. I love both factions
At one point you could take a character and dreadnought for them and vehicles and have them as a allied force with your main army but when they changed the rules for death company from rolling for each unit to see if any succumbed to the black rage to just buying the units and then there was death company dreads and vehicles so they just got rid of them shame I really liked them and would love it if they came back
Aye, this is so. I just think that a full Legion of the damned army would be awesome. I may well be wrong - probably am - but my scooby sense tells me we are not far off having one. But then, I've always been more shaggy than scooby, so it could be wrong again. :)
I hope this becomes a army...I would splurge money on this just because of how unique and cool this is. It is either Legion of the Damned, or Salamanders for me.
Excellent. I also hope the LotD get a bit more of the spotlight. Damned Dreadnoughts would be very cool indeed. I was disappointed to see they'd found a place in Legends. Hopefully it's just temporary.
Well, brother Arthurion, I think they are missing a trick and look at how popular these guys are? Hence I really believe they will release a damned army. They;d be fools not to with this much interest. :) Thanks for listening, brother Arthurion, always. :)
According to the space marines codex Legends pdf I downloaded today, the legion are not among them. And you cannot choose them as a chapter name either. So there is something afoot for sure but we must wait to see what Gdubs has planned for them
Now, there is always the long held suspicion that the legion of the damned are one of the unnamed legions. The "lost" legion returning in what form they could.
There are two, one seemed to have a very bad genetic defect (angel boi was afraid of going that route with his legion) The other betrayed the emperor in some way, that Russ had to beat them down. He did state that before the Burning of Prospero that his wolves had killed marines before. Perhaps one or both have heeded the Emperor's call and the Imperiums need for his own Daemons of Light
My head cannon states that the legion of the Damned are small shards of the BIG E's consciousness and warp presence, or manifestations caused by the sacrifice of 1,000 pyskers souls that 1 soul sacrifice for 1 Damned soldier
I think this could be a really cool new army where they are fully introduced by saving Gulimen or bringing a Primach back from the warp or something. Anyways thank you for this amazing video
“The flesh...is weak.” That was all the towering monolith of silver arm and scorching skull uttered. His...its? Words crackling as they burned from a mouth that no longer existed. Daemons had spilled from the Never. That swirling Overneath that coiled and slithered in and through the thin comprehension of what man knows as reality. All was lost. All was being murdered. Hope was not being lost. It was being eaten. Doom swelled before each soldier, knowing this was well and truly the end. Prayers were cast high even as the mouths that uttered them were ripped from loyal jaws. Fire burst from nowhere as their hope died. Great pyres of spectral flame roared beyond reality, the sudden inferno driving the Abominations back. And from the flame, strode a giant. Silver arms afire. Skull of silver eternally aflame. Burning pinholes he mistook for eyes locked with his own, shriveling his own soul. “The Flesh...is weak.” was all that was uttered. A hammer of magmatic matter burst into being within its massive hands. The Daemons roared their rage in return. But the Iron skulled warrior simply advanced, the danger utterly disregarded. All around him, hundreds of fiery phantasms clad in bone and scored armor swarmed out from the Never, their Ghost Bolters firing utter fury. And nothing but. What could a man do. But drop to his knees and cower before such absolute madness? I am but a man. Possessed of a mans temperament and durability. I am no coward. But If Death is my payment for my laxity of duty, then so be it. For I know now that the Emperors Will exists beyond my reach of understanding. I know. I do not need to believe. Now, Inquisitor, do your duty. The Damned await me on the Line.

There’s just something so badass when Commisars are total badasses like Ricard or Yarik seeing a ummie ina pointy ‘at leading ogrin into battle against demons and just so casually telling other solders that he’d be right back.
I’m not sure how a man like that can charge with such heavy adimatite balls
So, hear me out....They show up JUST when they are needed, never reload, take absurd amounts of damage, never get truly caught by the authorities..... The LotD is basically the A team.
Rofl!!!!! If you need help, if you can find them. ‘. Lol!!
I listen a lot if vid from your chanel. The audio on this one is far better than the iron hand (that I listen maybe 15 time). Your word is clearer. You should put paypal donation in your description and mention your patreon and paypal. You deserve it for sure to have support
@@Baldermort this is journey, every youtuber had a bad first video but they do progress in a regular basis. Maybe in a 6 months or more you will redone some vid and you will be proud of the progress. Sun tzu said play on your strength and reduce your weakeness. May the god machine be with you
Stevens xrp aye, he did. Gotta love some Tzu. :). Hmmmm. Still thinking of doing that. Think people should know it really. Especially as war gamers. Hmmmmm. ;).
Good night for a 40k ghost story...love the channel
Oh they were never that bad. Honest. Points cost could resolve that nicely. I hear you though. I hear you. :)
A young 13 year old me painted a space marine from the Warhammer 40k box in Legion of the Damned livery. Nearly 25 years later I've bought my first 5 models and painted one so far (Death Company Intercessors since you asked). May have a crack at it again if I start getting better at painting. Thanks for the amazing content
God i wish they would do more for the Legion of the Damned. They are such a cool part of the lore. Also love the vids brother.
The one I have been waiting for!
Awesome!! As all ways.
Thank you kind sir.
Thank you for listening and for commenting, brother Silent. :)
Baldermort you give me goosebumps with your stories they are just amazing!!! I love it when I see you've uploaded a new video! Brings a smile on my face every time
I wish theyd make a book from the perspective of the hive fleet, and how hungry they are, it’s thoughts, and it’s plans.
I've loved LotD since it first dropped in WD. Bring it on with Mannus as their leader!
Damn straight! :) I loved that first WD. Loved it. But I think Death Company just took all of their mojo over a decade or more. :(
Thank you for listening, brother. :)
The voice of the Warhammer 40K universe! The Allfather protects!
You are fantastic! Love your narrative.
Please make a video on the Stryxis!
Crumbs, now that is arcane lore. One day I just may. :)
Thanks for listening, brother Claes. : )
Thank you for this. I adore your work and I was so excited to see you did a LOD video
A brief introduction to the "Adeaptus Spooky, Scary, Rip-N-Tear(y)"
Omg it would be awesome to have a Legion of the Damned army with everything that comes with it. Great job as usual sir.
That's what I thought! I know people may not agree - but seriously. these guys are loved! Loved! I just hoped that GW might see the passion and might actually get one out for us. Never know! :)
@@Baldermort GW are not known for doing what the fans like but we can dream.
Beautiful work as usual, Baldermort!! Recently came to know of them and I've been very intrigued by their curse.
Loved the last bit at the ending, with you thinking outloud. Please do that more often
A very extremely awesome video as always Baldermort's Guide.
the rule of cool rules. these guys are cool.
Matticus Machinist it doesn’t indeed. The second rule - straight after ‘have fun’.
I love the rule of cool. :).
The best 40k channel I watch right now. How about a Legion of the Damned land raider, yes please Brother Baldermort
Thank you for listening, brother Boxall. :)
Excellent video yet again thank you brother.
Thank you for listening, brother. :)
A Good and interesting video about a subject I don't really care about.
Your videos are good as always.
Thank you for listening, brother. :)
My two favorite theories of who they were are either they are The Lost Legion or the battle brothers of The Traitor Legions who remained loyal.
This gas been an amazing production, you sir, have earned a new subscriber and have inspired hope for new additions of the Legion of the damned, if it comes to fruition I would be fully able to seriously dedicate my attention to the hobby.
That commissar’s exchange with the colonel was awesome
I cannot get enough of the Damned Legion, after finally getting ahold of some models I cannot wait to bring their Awesome power to the battlefield, and I absolutely love your voice
Amazing video as always brother Baldermort, the Legion of the Damned are one of the key tools at the Emperor's disposal, and I agree with you that they represent the Emperor's apotheosis into a true deity of the Warp. Though, I'm not sure it will occur any time soon, as I believe that for Him to become a true god requires that His physical body dies. My theory is thus:
The Emperor's body will likely die as Abaddon is in the Sanctum Imperialis, intent on destroying the Emperor once and for all, succeeding where Horus failed.
Awesome stuff mate
Thanks boss. :)
Got a great voice for this dude
By far the best warhammer narrator!
Well, in the little leagues. Nobody comes close to LT and 40K theories. Nobody. :)
@@Baldermort They are good, but you have the voice of a commissar. I stand by my original comment.
@@tyrstead5872 I second this, Baldermorts' narration oozes grim dark. LT & 40k are both insightful but not a patch in terms of the theatre of delivery.
Man I havn't busted out my legionnaires in a long time. I wish GW would give them some love in a white dwarf or something.
Testify! Thank you for listening, brother Freybrand. :)
You had me rolling in laughter at the end :P Great video as always.
Blooming fantastic
Thank you sir! But do remember it is all your fault. You did lean on me, old chap. :) I rushed it a bit,. which I regret now. But it wasn't all bad. :)

Sorry, I am a bit tired. I don't really know what that means? Sorry. Could you re-phrase it for me? (Yes, I know I am dense about on-line things)
Thanks for listening, brother. :)
@@Baldermort I mean your patreon and other such things that we can support you with.
What do you think of the idea that Ferrus Manus could return as the Primarch of the Legion of the damned?
I actually did a prognostication (shudders) for Sisters stating I wanted this and it would be a good idea. But then, I hoped sisters would be able to summon LotD like chaos summon daemons. Ah well. Maybe one year. :)
It would be cool if he was also headless to. Just a black mist with 2 floating red eyes in its place
@@zacharylopez8683 How would you model that? Really the idea of a primarch leading the LotD would have to be Sanguinous. Flaming wings and all. He is the Emperor's Angel after all. Perfect to embody the hopes and dreams of humanity.
THE EMPEROR PROTECTS!!!!!!
He does indeed! Thank you for listening, brother. :)
(timeline is before the fall of cadia leading up to the fall)
johnny Brravo now that sounds amazing. Amazing. Enjoy it! To the fullest. :).
But having a loaded bolter never hurt either.
they are the first Marine "legion" that I painted and won my first painting contest with those figs, and never lost a battle with them, but this was back in the late 80's or so...
Yes, Inquisitor, this comment right here.
In dedicato imperatum ultra articulo mortis.
I agree with them being the dead souls of lost marines.
Definitely one of my favourites
May i ask what video you did on your thoughts for the end of the 40k universe please. I play all in your playlists and cant always find the corresponding videos. Yet another great video, i do so enjoy when you talk about the more hushed parts of the lore...
The end of the warhammer universe and the cicatrix maledictum is the name of the video. ;).
Thank you for listening! .
3:58 Thank you sir, the mechanicum can just give me a new set of bionic ears.
They must TRULY be his Angels of Death
Idea for a follow up video: Intro to the Fire Hawks
The legion shall return
The Corpse God's own minor deamons.
The Eternal Chronicler yep. Had to be done. I know - now - they’re legends but I hold out hope they will indeed bring them out as a faction. :).
@@Baldermort seeing as GW is discontinuing their model line I fine that doubtful.
The Eternal Chronicler true enough, but they know their popularity. I hope they do a line in them, not just a model. Time will tell, I guess. :).
They will get a codex when they are given a new commander which will be one of the dead or lost primarchs like Ferrus Manus or Sanguinius
Aye,. I would love to see Ferrus lead them. Love. :)_
roland flynn or maybe the emperor himself ?
At one point you could take a character and dreadnought for them and vehicles and have them as a allied force with your main army but when they changed the rules for death company from rolling for each unit to see if any succumbed to the black rage to just buying the units and then there was death company dreads and vehicles so they just got rid of them shame I really liked them and would love it if they came back
Aye, this is so. I just think that a full Legion of the damned army would be awesome. I may well be wrong - probably am - but my scooby sense tells me we are not far off having one. But then, I've always been more shaggy than scooby, so it could be wrong again. :)
If they make a box of these guys, I want to see a Guy Fieri head option for the captain; He'll take the foes of the Imperium to flavor town.
I hope this becomes a army...I would splurge money on this just because of how unique and cool this is. It is either Legion of the Damned, or Salamanders for me.
Majorkill brought me here now I can’t stop what a voice and ambience
Thanks for listening, brother Arthurion, always. :)
According to the space marines codex Legends pdf I downloaded today, the legion are not among them. And you cannot choose them as a chapter name either. So there is something afoot for sure but we must wait to see what Gdubs has planned for them
Nevermind, they had their own Legends pdf, fair well ye spectres of vengeance :(
Now, there is always the long held suspicion that the legion of the damned are one of the unnamed legions. The "lost" legion returning in what form they could.
Ahhhh. A nugget of gold I had not heard, until now! Hmmmm a fun thought. Thank you for it, brother. :)
@@Baldermort My pleasure. It is always fun to hand off the old stories to another old salt :P
Now that is a cool theory 👍🏼
There are two, one seemed to have a very bad genetic defect (angel boi was afraid of going that route with his legion)
The other betrayed the emperor in some way, that Russ had to beat them down. He did state that before the Burning of Prospero that his wolves had killed marines before. Perhaps one or both have heeded the Emperor's call and the Imperiums need for his own Daemons of Light
Huzzah Another video to listen to while painting.
Thank you for listening, brother Crimson. :)
I got into 40k as a kid. I might a full legion of the damned army. I found an online codex at one time.
My head cannon states that the legion of the Damned are small shards of the BIG E's consciousness and warp presence, or manifestations caused by the sacrifice of 1,000 pyskers souls that 1 soul sacrifice for 1 Damned soldier
Paint it all black and shimmery haha like it. And livery “ To Purge & protect”.
I think this could be a really cool new army where they are fully introduced by saving Gulimen or bringing a Primach back from the warp or something. Anyways thank you for this amazing video
“The flesh...is weak.”
That was all the towering monolith of silver arm and scorching skull uttered.
I almost charged with you yelling lord baldermort..
I really do believe they are the souls from the Istvan drop site masacre , vengeance made manifest with help of the emperors psyhic might , and notice how they are called LEGION of the Damned not CHAPTER of the damned lol
And just imagine a ghost rider ish Ferrus leading them...holy moly
I work at a retro gaming store in the deep wilds of Canada. I'm going to start playing this content at work. I'm interested to see how the customers react as they shop. Most of them are either Star Wars, Star Trek or Pokemon fans. I think your work would be the perfect intro to someone who is unfamiliar with the lore.
Black Templar thanks, brother Black Templar. :). It is designed for new players.
Might want to avoid some of chaos factions. ;).
Tell me how it goes. Well. If you feel like it. :).
no ammo is require ! perfect job emperor !
The Emperor's own deamons. I wish the Legon of the damned would be an army, but I sadly don't think GW has the guts to do such a thing. What are your opinions on the star child. I know you said you are making a vid about it but can you give us a little sneak peek?
Blash Casual covering the start child very soon. Very. :) I know about GW. But I firmly enjoy believing that dreams can come true if they are shown there may be a sale in it. :).
In service of the imperium even after death
Holy Terra, 200 Ogryns. A stroll hahahaha
I always found it incredibly bizarre that chaos was only evil in the 40k universe.
Hnnn. Fair point actually. ;)
Legion of the Damned Dreadnought? Well, there's ONE Dreadnought that would fit right in the Legion and would look reallyyyyy good with ethereal fire on him.
I want to reject the idea of what has got to be the 20th "Space Marines, only better!" army at this point when there are so many more interesting ideas that could be armies, but.... Yeah the track record of GW over the last 20 years goes to show that "Space Marines, only better" is literally they only thing they are willing to put out for the 40K setting.
