My Lore theory on the Legion of the Damned is that they are the 2nd legion. The Emperor looking forward into the future, foresaw a time when all would be lost. He sent for two of his legions, the 2nd and the 11th. He told their Primarchs of what he had seen and asked for them to travel through the warp into that dark future. The 2nd volunteered to go first. Big E applied the full might of his power to them. They burst into flames and became the Legion of the Damned. A force capable of surviving till that distant time within the warp. Seeing this the Primarch of the 11th refused to have this horror befall his people, and because he already knew of this dark time the Emperor had to put down the first of his sons. The 11th legion was mindwiped, and splintered into the other legions, with the Ultra Marines gaining the largest number. And my reasoning is they are the "Legion" of the Damned. Not the Chapter of the Damned. And the 2nd and 11th are known as The Lost and the Forgotten. Lost in the warp, and forgotten to all fits this idea perfectly.
Current lore says that they're the fire hawks, which is an ultramarines second founding legion. The coolest thing I've seen suggested about the legion is that ferrus manus is actually leading them. Lets be honest, a flaming primarch sounds awesome.
@@ThePigeon5734 White dwarf #99. Index Astartes: Legion of the Damned, by Rick Priestly. It directly states that the fire hawks, after their emergency warp exit began to transform and slowly die, and that they chose to not die without a purpose "So began the unstoppable war of the legion of the damned". It is not speculation. It is LORE, as written by the chief lore writer of 40k
I've been waiting for LotD minis for 20 years. I don't have the skills to convert my own squad. I hope the added hype for the LotD of late will push GW to finally make some minis. Probably not.
If you want something simple use human skulls instead of helmets and freehand some flames along the armor. Maybe use chaplains bodies for characters and shave off the ecclesiarchy icons
@sakhban7190 I got nothing against printing, but I personally don't like painting resin. It could just be the resin I used, but it was always a pain to paint over. I also really like kitbashing, so it's alot of extra fun there for me.

Actually, the Legion of the Damned go all the way back to the very early days of 40k, someone on the studio painting team at GW came up with the idea and it slowly grew in popularity. If you hunt for a bit, you will find some pics from the old White Dwarf magazine that had a few of the RTB01 space marines painted up in that now famous paint scheme of black with burning bones and skulls. There was even a Reaver titan in Legion of the Damned colors and markings someone did for Golden Demon way back then!
I would really love to see how you would fix the Night Lords. I think they are okay but could do with way more of a vampire style aspect to them. So would loooove if you could do them
I still remember being in High School 2 decades ago just starting my Dark Angels Space Marines and my friends dad showing me his LotD Marines and explaining their lore and thinking it was cool as hell but then hearing very little about them for the next 20 years except in little tidbits here and there. I always like to imagine that they are the Emperors Will manifested, in a way his own "Daemons" but not chaos aligned.
I was never a big fan of the flame decals on the Legion of the Damned's armour since it makes them look tacky, but a marine wreathed in flames always looks pretty cool in my book. I did wonder, since you mentioned that in the lore they were formally the Fire Hawks, if you would sculpt flaming bone hawk wings instead of the ribcage on the armour. I also think that if/when GW gets around to re-sculpting them officially that they should incorporate more of their spectral nature since they are imperial daemons after all.
One thing I absolutely love about your videos is the music you play in the background when you both paint. I'm not familiar with the genre names at all but would love to know the styles/genres used in your video to listen to when I do my own painting at home 😊
I'd love to see a legion of the damned Dreadnaught, but with a twist. Rather than stomping around on those big chonky legs, it would be like floating on a massive plume of fire or something. Idunno, maybe I'm just too stoned.
The stippling layers and highlights are an amazing departure from the smooth textures and dry brushing I usually fall back on. This seems like a great technique for my IWs. Well done.
This is the coolest Black Legion mini I've seen. The pose, the sculpt, the paint job, everything just oozes intimidating hopelessness. This is fucking sick man, impressive work Lucas 👏🏻🙏🏻🤙🏻🤘🏻
didn’t realize until now, but a legion of the damned kill team is an absolute no-brainer. They could add so much flavour for the models, keeping it small & semi-exclusive without committing to a full range. Hell it’s probably finished and waiting on release. Would sell like crazy
I’m a believer that, just like Celestine, the LotD are summoned by the Emperor when needed. They are originally the slain of Isstvan 3&5, the War in the Webway shows them being led by a figure that is described pretty heavily as Ferrus. The Fire Hawks could have been added to the Legion.
Here are my proposals for future ideas: 1, recreate the 4 iconic heroes of Warhammer Quest 2, make a nice miniature or Malus Darkblade 3, make a space dwarf. GW made 2 fine models for Necromunda (don't say League of Votann, they are just shorter and roundier space marines...), but it's not like the old squats 4, make a decent chaos dwarf hero or sorcerer 5, make a new but classic Morathi with very few clothes, to show the painting skin of a flawless female, without muscles and heavy shades (way trickier than supposed to) 6, Gotrek and Felix (Gotrek got a nice update for AoS, but the classic Felix is out in the Old World) 7, Tyrion and Teclis guys, like a modern version of the high elves, not the weird update from GW 8, do whatever you want, it's always entertaining to watch, you two!
Here is a challenge, what figures (War Hammer or what ever) would you use to make a Chess Set of 32 pieces Each side starts with 16 pieces: eight pawns, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, one queen, and one king. What figures/Chapters/Factions would you use.
I like the idea that the Legion of the Damned are the souls of the Astartes of the Legions of the Death Guard, World Eaters, Emperors Children, and the Luna Wolves.
Not sure if you're familiar but that... That ain't an aquila... Jokes aside, freaking love you silly people. Thank you for keeping the love for 40k alive!
The Fire Hawks, the original name of the chapter and an amazing history. Always wanted to do a chapter of them. Think its time for the Greenstuff and to release my Sgt Centurius from his Tomb.
I had an entire Legion of the Damned army in 3rd edition. I ran them as Alpha Legion in the 3.5 CSM codex and took them to Games Day Chicago. Everything infiltrated except for the captain on a bike. It was fun.
@SquidmarMiniatures I would really like to see and in depth tutorial about painting black armour. Especially how you are placing the highlights correctly or how to approach it? In the video it just looks like random speckle highlights - but in practice...well it isn't 😅 An in-depth video of painting black armour would be awesome 😎👍
Awesome job as always boys but I think you missed a huge opportunity not painting that plinth to look like a candle that way the mini would like the most metal wick ever!
So, on the lore it's a bit muddled. There was a book called Legion of the Damned which does portray them as ghostly beings (one appears to a few characters in the book but seems to not be seen by others, though later they do manifest to kill chaos marines), but also heavily implies that they're the Fire Hawks (empty coffins with the Chapter insignia falling from the sky, a massive ghostly star fortress which matches the one the Fire Hawks owned, etc). It is, however, left open to interpretation whether it's just the Fire Hawks or it can expand to other marines (the final lines of the book are a quote, ending with "Perhaps these damned legionnaires had pledged themselves as such. Perhaps one day I shall know. There are worse fates in the galaxy for a battle-brother, intent on serving one's God-Emperor into eternity.") Then, in the book The Chapter's Due, it's implied that the Legion are literal ghosts of dead space marines as Uriel Ventris is approached by a damned legionary who seems to be Remus Ventanus, who tells him the mortal name of a Daemon prince so he can banish it later. Then we have the Fall of Cadia, which confirms them to be some kind of Warp being, as when the Cadian Pylons activate and begin to close the Eye of Terror, the LotD on the ground vanish as daemons and Celestine lose their power

Amazing painting... its easier to see the details on smaller mondels like this space marine.
So they are like the Oathbreakers in LOTR, I did love these guys when I collected 🤘🏻
You should totally paint some up like the Oathbreakers 😀
Legion of the Damned are my favourite, the thought of loyalist spirits of vengeance is cool af. Also it’d be cool to see all the 40k legions in a fantasy style armour/weapon set up etc.
