There's actually a short story from the White Dwarf of August 2019 where Guardsmen are fighting Tyranids and get annihilated, only for Space Marines to appear in scaly, azure blue armor. They help the Guardsmen who are enthralled by them and are grateful. The marine then says 'For the Emperor' :)
The best way to explain the alpha legion is as such: Half of the alpha legion is loyalist well the other half of the alpha legion is chaos but no one in the legion knows witch half is witch
The loyalist half consider themselves the antibodies of the imperium purging weakness to make the imperium stronger, the chaos half forget why they purge things and just enjoy the action for what it is.

I always thought that the Alpha Legion were not double-agents, but *triple-agents*, a false flag twice over. All of the Primarchs had/have an implied purpose in their design, after all, and one struggles to pin down that of Alpharius/Omegon... the Legions already had weapons of terror, confusion, infiltration and subversion. So what, then, can be the point of the Legion who embody all of these things alongside impenetrable mystery? Allow me to propose a hypothesis; the Alpha Legion and their twin Primarchs are, in fact, a *contingency plan*, a sort of "dead man's switch" against the exact sort of no-win scenario that the Imperium has found itself in. An unknowable and borderline-unstoppable force who nevertheless do not conquer or destroy as much as they subvert and mold, their ultimate purpose being to save the Imperium from itself from the outside. When the time eventually comes, I tentatively believe that the Alpha Legion will throw aside all their masks and activate every asset they've sown and cultivated on both sides of the conflict, then to finally help the Emperor truly die and enact a grand plan to deny both destinies presented by the Cabal. To find the Third Way. The Emperor Protects, Hydra Dominatus.
I could see but grant you may they are quadruple agents to remove the corruption of the empire, chaos, and the cabal so that the imperium can be restored To what it was supposed to be. They wade through shit and slit the throats of brothers so that we may walk through flowers and birth children. No chaos mutation and words with the emperor
Although im not a fan of the alpha legion I’ve often had the same thought! I have also wondered what they know about the dark angels my preferred legion but that’s a conversation for another day. Great hypothesis though.
@@JD-jr8nq Aaah, the First! They're my pick as well. Alpha Legion are in my top five, but Lion's Angels are still top of the pile as far as I'm concerned. With the Fallen in mind, Lord Cypher's movements have a certain... Alpharius-ness about them, don't you think? I'm not suggesting that Cypher is/was one of the Twins in disguise, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's some sort of conspiracy or connection going on there between the Fallen and the Hydra.
I'd love to see an interaction like this. An alpha legionare in the midst of battle against the blood angels,his commander is dead at the hands of a new "primaris marine" and to keep moral amongst his brethern he shouts "I am Alpharuis!!".He hears a gasp behind him and is greeted by a death company intercessor.He looks at the legionare with fascination and proclaims "Brother!You have returned!Why...why why why must you have turned from the emperor's light!You have become a heretic!A once noble brother of mine turned traitor...what is your excuse for this." Well, I write the stories and the run downs too. I usually say 'to quote' when merely reading out. I do that sometimes when I just cannot match the brevity of the codex or source material. : )
The emphasis on planning, deception and secrecy really makes me feel that they are truly Tzeentch's chosen legion rather than the thousand sons. Alpharius: Just as planned. Tzeentch: Hydra dominatus. Me: I am Alpharius.

Nice theory but wasnt it actually stated that magnus was originally fated to be what became horus? The gods chosen Champion against the emperor etc. But he grew to strong to manipulate as horus was

I'll always love the Alpha legion because they feel like one of the least outlandish factions in 40k, they don't care about honor or glory, just brutal efficiency and misdirection of enemy forces, they fight not just to win a battle but the whole war at the same time, they don't truly follow chaos but nor do they follow the ideals of the Imperium. They will always be my favorite group in Warhammer and I like the approach that GW and their writers took to depict the faction as well as they have, we're not meant to understand their endgame because they play it so close to the chest. Regarding Rogal's perceived disgust for their tactics Wolf Lord Rho actually covered an encounter between him and Alpharius (back when Alpharius was still loyal). An interesting between them was where Rogal was apparently able to recognize the real Alpharius out of his sons who were disguised as him.
An enemy that cannot simply be rooted out with strength of arms or unbreakable ideology. Truly an entity that could be described as 'grim dark'. Here's to hoping they get some codex love in the near future

If you look at it from another perspective what would be the most eficient way to act for the Alpha Legion, divide the Legion each and every splinter beliving that they are the true Alpha Legion each one working for a diferent purpose but when combined like the pieces of a puzzle they make a complete image an image that only Alpharius or Omegon can assemble and see, an end to their and their Legion long work.
My favorite legion is Alpha Legion because everyone can see them as they like. Traitor, loyalist, neither or both. They are doing there one thing, but not one thing is similar to other. They are separated and united, one and many. They bring ordered chaos and bring chaos for order. And I think they do this for the war, so that it will never end, to never see both professes. That's why in Horus heresy they helped both loyalist and traitors. Hydra Dominatus brothers.
Hearing about operatives of the Alpha Legion, how they might have hidden talents and accomplishments they do not recall... it reminds me of a TV show called Dollhouse. For those unaware, Dollhouse revolves around an organization capable of taking memories and skills from a person and putting them into another person's body - even combining them to form entirely artificial personas, with any personality or skillset the organization might desire. What if that's what the Alpha Legion can do, either through arcane technology or some quirk of Alpharius' gene-sons? Consider, the Alpha Legion's use of sleeper agents, able to fool even themselves. Consider also that it's said that an Alpha Legionnaire can take on any roll required, equally adept as a infantryman or a vehicle driver, as a Raptor or a Havoc, even able to assume command should their leader fall - like a hydra growing a new head. No army could possibly have so many people with such a diverse array of talents... unless they were able to somehow share memories and skills. On the one hand, it's terrifying. As an Alpha Legionnaire, or even one of their agents, who you are can be overwritten, your deeds forgotten, and you can be turned into whatever the Legion wishes you to be. But on the other hand... your own talents and memories added to the pool, never to be forgotten. And in a sense, you can never truly die. The bodies of human and Astartes alike are nothing but shells - should a skilled pilot or renowned champion fall, he may rise again in the body of another Legionnaire, ready to continue the fight. Who you are becomes unimportant - but at the same time, you become the Legion itself, part of an insidious, but magnificent whole. You are Alpharius, and Alpharius is you.
Always great to be more informed about a faction I know little about, but you summed the legion up so well in one sentence: “The other traitor legions serve Chaos, the Alpha Legion *ARE* Chaos.” Excellent work, brother. Thanks again for doing what you do. :)
Thanks a lot for the support, brother Richard. They are a tricky lot, the Alphas. Took me a while to formulate any opinion at all out of all of the jumble. You know me, I don't like to do the obvious and do have a rather strange way of looking at things. :)
If they ever did get a codex it would be really interesting to not give them chaos or imperium keywords but give them limited access to certain units from both.
For my money, their armor, colors, and imagery have the most aesthetic appeal of any Legion, loyal or traitor. I have always loved that shade, like bronze oxidation. It's very 70's, earth-tones and turquoise were big back then. May sound weird but, every time I see the XXth, I think of album covers from 70's Prog Rock bands. Thank you Baldermort!
I've thought about that too since the book came out. I mean, of course all Imperial Fists players agree with Dorn and think Alpharius is dead. But they underestimate the ability to create pseudo-primarchs from the perfectly trained sacrifice. Dorn mentions that he felt his brothers death. But did he? Or did he feel only the trickling wave of a "primarchs" death in the flushing wake of validation in conviction in the face of.. "killing Loki, the traitor, once and for all"..?
Knowledge is power, to deny it is to take away that power. And they will turn on one another to gain it back. And we will cull them to our leisure, their true intents bubbling to the surface. And new seeds to be harvested.
Alpha Legion is one of my definite favorites! Basically when you mix a Perturabo/Curze/Mortarion style win-at-all-costs craftiness and also Out-Tzeentch the Tzeentch!

Marc Boutin not according to existing wisdom. The 2nd was quiet and taciturn. He was quoted to be at threat to the imperium’. Rumour has it they got nailed by the old uncle himself. Hence their numbers on his throne. Other rumours are the Rangdan ‘did for them’. But yours is a fun thought. :).
The 2nd aka the carcharadons are exiled and only return to the galaxy to resupply then go back into the outer darkness to take the fight to the imperiums enemies were they are strong ( though its likely theyre original geneseed has been spliced with nightlords and ravenguard stock, as theyre primarch is dead and they cant replace it any other way)

Thanks for covering my favourite faction in all of 40k, their mystique is what draws so many to them. The people who say that the Alpha Legion are contrived are, I think, exactly right and that is what makes the 20th legion so great indeed. The alpha legion are so artificial, their methods so unrealistic, that one has to consider every possibility, even Occam's Razor: that the Alpha Legion are all smoke and mirrors. If you have read Dan Abnett's Inquisitor novels, then I'm sure you'll understand my excitement to see the next installment... Hydra Dominatus. Only one critique with this video and it's the missed opportunity that was: "Welcome gentle listener, I am Alpharius..."
Brother Potato, you are not wrong. I love Alphas more and the more I know of them. Yes, some throw stones, but some will throw stones at anyone who is not their faction. Alas, I think GW actually encourage tribalism, but they do not realise sometimes how this can go waaay further than they intend and become venomous. Sigh. Some times it feels like I'm actually being acused of heresy *shiver* I would love to hear your take on some of the other traitor legions, especially the Iron Warriors, who always seem so criminally underestimated by their fellow first founding legions. I think your way of speaking would work perfectly for a bitter Iron Warrior, slugging through the mud, coming out victorious and then heading to the next front to do it all again!

I took public speaking and all the writing courses I could when I was in college; narration and proofreading are fun for me and I have to say: You are Great at what you do. Seriously, Best 40k Lore Narrator. I always liked the Alpha Legion, but never knew much about them. Their color scheme and aesthetics are amazing. Watching your video, I learned both more... and less than I knew. One of the few lore videos where the intent matches the subject so seamlessly.

I think it would be cool if they are split between the emperor and chaos like was mentioned, but it happened once the two possible futures were revealed by Grammaticus. They decided to each take a path so they could hedge their bet, so to speak.. or something along those lines. I'm new to all of this and late to the party, but you're an incredible lore master!

IDK what passage that was from but I really like how the former Arbities was justifying the mutant culling to himself with all the mental gymnastics about it being all a trick. It actually makes it feel like people could legitimately act like that if the imperium was real. The intro is the best Alpha Legion story I've ever heard. It really captures the insidious nuance of their overly complex machinations and how deadly they can be perfectly.
Whether it be Grimdark or Lovecraftian horror, an important adage to keep at the ready in times of uncertainty is this: *_"A good mystery always trumps a lousy answer. ALWAYS."_* That is why the Alpha Legion remains my favorite faction in 40k. Thank you for doing them justice, Baldermort.

Ok , This is weird. Watching this presentation I was put in mind of a book I read years ago, maybe decades ago now. I was set in the 40 K universe and dealt with the adventures of an imperial inquisitor during his investigation into a conspiracy surrounding a mysterious ''hydra''. This investigation took him and his companions deep into the eye of terror itself. The Hydra , as I remember (dimly , ever so very dimly ) , turned out to be a translucent substance or creature or something , not of this world . Instead it was half of the warp and half of this world , a third way if you will . The threat , or promise , was that , once released and given enough time , it would spread into the mind of all living men., rendering each vulnerable to psychic possession. The story ended with an audience with the emperor himself, or part of his mind, in the throne room of holy terra. It turned out that the emperor had long been schizophrenic . If I remember rightly , the whole thing was a scheme of the emperor, hidden even from himself. That's about all I remember . I don't remember any mention of the Alpha legion but the number of bells ringing in my head suggest to me that this may have been the germ of the story or legend. i wish I could remember the title. Does anyone else remember the book or story ? Maybe a bit better than I do ?
I think Legion wide end goals don't exist for the XXth. Obsessive compartmentalization, instances of the Primarchs appearing to undertake independent initiatives, and the loss of one or both Primarchs would leave the organization without central focus. Cell structures work for terrorists because the larger ideological goals aren't secrets. I think the Alpha Legion is fractured into traitor, loyalist, and renegade cells. Their secrecy, duplicity, and obedience are so ingrained that most of them may not recognize a lack of unified purpose upon encountering another cell.
Do we deserve less? I personally thought this one was sub par, but time was against me. We deserve the best, the brothers and sisters here - so I will do all I can to make that happen. :) Thank you for taking the time to listen and then comment. It means a lot. :)

Hey Baldermort, I just wanted to ask if you've heard of the Warp entity, called The Hydra? I heard about it when I was looking into the sensei but apparently the Ordo Hydra is an Inquisition faction that seeks to join all of humanity using the Hydra to make a single human Hive Mind to combat Chaos. I've always found the Hydra symbolism of the Alpha Legion and their quirky lack of individuality more than a little coincidental. I think the Alpha Legion are Traitors in the basic sense but I dont think they serve the Chaos Gods Edit: apparently it's a psychic virus but still oddly fitting said Virus could also have affected the early Tyranids
Definitely my favourite Legion, always bought into the third Primarch but had never considered the third head representing a third way 🤯 That's what I love about Alpha, they make your head fall off at every turn hahaha. Not sure if they're still at it in the current Dark Imperium era but found it really interesting they were happy for none Astartes to identify as being part of the Legion, respecting their roles and achievements during The Heresy, in many ways the most inclusive Legion as they're not Great Protectors like The Salamanders or simply see mankind as servants like The Dark Angels (or chattle like World Eaters) they respect humans as humans can do what Alpharius can't sometimes. Not disagreeing with you - I just know that - from my perspective only as an old hand but certainly not even your equal in knowledge I'd wager - retcons and unreliable voices can make anything grey again. Was it omegon or Alpharius? Not sure. I know I should be, but I am not. Perhaps I am just romanticizing the thing too damn much, but we all know I do that endlessly. :)
I am constantly amazed at how well written and cleverly presented your videos are. You do a tremendous job of presenting this wonderful mythology in all it's nuance and complexity.

If you aren’t confused about the Alpha Legion that you don’t know nearly enough about them. (Or do you?!?) Also I just realized the XX of their legion is a hint at there being two primarchs!
Seems to me as though they're more likely agents of the Emperor, rather than devotees of Chaos. Their tendencies aren't those of chaos undivided: decay, sensation and bloodshed don't typify them. That only leaves change, Tzeentch, who is renowned for mutations of form.

The alpha legion are not loyalist. At all. They use sorcery and have plenty of demon princes. The are marked by chaos and attack imperials.

I always thought that the Alpha Legion were not double-agents, but *triple-agents*, a false flag twice over. All of the Primarchs had/have an implied purpose in their design, after all, and one struggles to pin down that of Alpharius/Omegon... the Legions already had weapons of terror, confusion, infiltration and subversion. So what, then, can be the point of the Legion who embody all of these things alongside impenetrable mystery?
Allow me to propose a hypothesis; the Alpha Legion and their twin Primarchs are, in fact, a *contingency plan*, a sort of "dead man's switch" against the exact sort of no-win scenario that the Imperium has found itself in. An unknowable and borderline-unstoppable force who nevertheless do not conquer or destroy as much as they subvert and mold, their ultimate purpose being to save the Imperium from itself from the outside. When the time eventually comes, I tentatively believe that the Alpha Legion will throw aside all their masks and activate every asset they've sown and cultivated on both sides of the conflict, then to finally help the Emperor truly die and enact a grand plan to deny both destinies presented by the Cabal.

With the Fallen in mind, Lord Cypher's movements have a certain... Alpharius-ness about them, don't you think? I'm not suggesting that Cypher is/was one of the Twins in disguise, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's some sort of conspiracy or connection going on there between the Fallen and the Hydra.

I'll always love the Alpha legion because they feel like one of the least outlandish factions in 40k, they don't care about honor or glory, just brutal efficiency and misdirection of enemy forces, they fight not just to win a battle but the whole war at the same time, they don't truly follow chaos but nor do they follow the ideals of the Imperium. They will always be my favorite group in Warhammer and I like the approach that GW and their writers took to depict the faction as well as they have, we're not meant to understand their endgame because they play it so close to the chest. Anyhow good video, I like your content. Hydra Dominatus.

Regarding Rogal's perceived disgust for their tactics Wolf Lord Rho actually covered an encounter between him and Alpharius (back when Alpharius was still loyal). An interesting between them was where Rogal was apparently able to recognize the real Alpharius out of his sons who were disguised as him.

If you look at it from another perspective what would be the most eficient way to act for the Alpha Legion, divide the Legion each and every splinter beliving that they are the true Alpha Legion each one working for a diferent purpose but when combined like the pieces of a puzzle they make a complete image an image that only Alpharius or Omegon can assemble and see, an end to their and their Legion long work.

My favorite legion is Alpha Legion because everyone can see them as they like. Traitor, loyalist, neither or both. They are doing there one thing, but not one thing is similar to other. They are separated and united, one and many. They bring ordered chaos and bring chaos for order. And I think they do this for the war, so that it will never end, to never see both professes. That's why in Horus heresy they helped both loyalist and traitors. Hydra Dominatus brothers.
I'd suggest there's a fourth option they may be following... They've bloody well confused themselves into forgetting whose side they're on.

Hearing about operatives of the Alpha Legion, how they might have hidden talents and accomplishments they do not recall... it reminds me of a TV show called Dollhouse. For those unaware, Dollhouse revolves around an organization capable of taking memories and skills from a person and putting them into another person's body - even combining them to form entirely artificial personas, with any personality or skillset the organization might desire. What if that's what the Alpha Legion can do, either through arcane technology or some quirk of Alpharius' gene-sons?
Consider, the Alpha Legion's use of sleeper agents, able to fool even themselves. Consider also that it's said that an Alpha Legionnaire can take on any roll required, equally adept as a infantryman or a vehicle driver, as a Raptor or a Havoc, even able to assume command should their leader fall - like a hydra growing a new head. No army could possibly have so many people with such a diverse array of talents... unless they were able to somehow share memories and skills.
On the one hand, it's terrifying. As an Alpha Legionnaire, or even one of their agents, who you are can be overwritten, your deeds forgotten, and you can be turned into whatever the Legion wishes you to be. But on the other hand... your own talents and memories added to the pool, never to be forgotten. And in a sense, you can never truly die. The bodies of human and Astartes alike are nothing but shells - should a skilled pilot or renowned champion fall, he may rise again in the body of another Legionnaire, ready to continue the fight. Who you are becomes unimportant - but at the same time, you become the Legion itself, part of an insidious, but magnificent whole. You are Alpharius, and Alpharius is you.
Always great to be more informed about a faction I know little about, but you summed the legion up so well in one sentence:
“The other traitor legions serve Chaos, the Alpha Legion *ARE* Chaos.”

For my money, their armor, colors, and imagery have the most aesthetic appeal of any Legion, loyal or traitor. I have always loved that shade, like bronze oxidation. It's very 70's, earth-tones and turquoise were big back then. May sound weird but, every time I see the XXth, I think of album covers from 70's Prog Rock bands. Thank you Baldermort!

I've thought about that too since the book came out.
I mean, of course all Imperial Fists players agree with Dorn and think Alpharius is dead.
But they underestimate the ability to create pseudo-primarchs from the perfectly trained sacrifice.
Dorn mentions that he felt his brothers death. But did he? Or did he feel only the trickling wave of a "primarchs" death in the flushing wake of validation in conviction in the face of.. "killing Loki, the traitor, once and for all"..?
Knowledge is power, to deny it is to take away that power. And they will turn on one another to gain it back. And we will cull them to our leisure, their true intents bubbling to the surface. And new seeds to be harvested.

Thanks for covering my favourite faction in all of 40k, their mystique is what draws so many to them. The people who say that the Alpha Legion are contrived are, I think, exactly right and that is what makes the 20th legion so great indeed. The alpha legion are so artificial, their methods so unrealistic, that one has to consider every possibility, even Occam's Razor: that the Alpha Legion are all smoke and mirrors. If you have read Dan Abnett's Inquisitor novels, then I'm sure you'll understand my excitement to see the next installment... Hydra Dominatus.

I would love to hear your take on some of the other traitor legions, especially the Iron Warriors, who always seem so criminally underestimated by their fellow first founding legions. I think your way of speaking would work perfectly for a bitter Iron Warrior, slugging through the mud, coming out victorious and then heading to the next front to do it all again!

I took public speaking and all the writing courses I could when I was in college; narration and proofreading are fun for me and I have to say: You are Great at what you do. Seriously, Best 40k Lore Narrator. I always liked the Alpha Legion, but never knew much about them. Their color scheme and aesthetics are amazing. Watching your video, I learned both more... and less than I knew. One of the few lore videos where the intent matches the subject so seamlessly.

The intro is the best Alpha Legion story I've ever heard.
It really captures the insidious nuance of their overly complex machinations and how deadly they can be perfectly.
Whether it be Grimdark or Lovecraftian horror, an important adage to keep at the ready in times of uncertainty is this:
*_"A good mystery always trumps a lousy answer. ALWAYS."_*
That is why the Alpha Legion remains my favorite faction in 40k. Thank you for doing them justice, Baldermort.

Ok , This is weird. Watching this presentation I was put in mind of a book I read years ago, maybe decades ago now. I was set in the 40 K universe and dealt with the adventures of an imperial inquisitor during his investigation into a conspiracy surrounding a mysterious ''hydra''. This investigation took him and his companions deep into the eye of terror itself. The Hydra , as I remember (dimly , ever so very dimly ) , turned out to be a translucent substance or creature or something , not of this world . Instead it was half of the warp and half of this world , a third way if you will . The threat , or promise , was that , once released and given enough time , it would spread into the mind of all living men., rendering each vulnerable to psychic possession.
The story ended with an audience with the emperor himself, or part of his mind, in the throne room of holy terra. It turned out that the emperor had long been schizophrenic . If I remember rightly , the whole thing was a scheme of the emperor, hidden even from himself.
That's about all I remember . I don't remember any mention of the Alpha legion but the number of bells ringing in my head suggest to me that this may have been the germ of the story or legend. i wish I could remember the title. Does anyone else remember the book or story ? Maybe a bit better than I do ?

I think Legion wide end goals don't exist for the XXth. Obsessive compartmentalization, instances of the Primarchs appearing to undertake independent initiatives, and the loss of one or both Primarchs would leave the organization without central focus.
Cell structures work for terrorists because the larger ideological goals aren't secrets.
I think the Alpha Legion is fractured into traitor, loyalist, and renegade cells. Their secrecy, duplicity, and obedience are so ingrained that most of them may not recognize a lack of unified purpose upon encountering another cell.

3rd option in reality is: "We´re looting this bitch you call galaxy, grab some eldar hookers on the way out and head for another universe! Oh yeah and we mess with both sides for entertaiment purposes only."
They may not be villains.
They may not be protagonists.
But they are for certain antagonists for every side at the same time. They can drive the plot forwards.

Hey Baldermort, I just wanted to ask if you've heard of the Warp entity, called The Hydra? I heard about it when I was looking into the sensei but apparently the Ordo Hydra is an Inquisition faction that seeks to join all of humanity using the Hydra to make a single human Hive Mind to combat Chaos.
I've always found the Hydra symbolism of the Alpha Legion and their quirky lack of individuality more than a little coincidental.
I think the Alpha Legion are Traitors in the basic sense but I dont think they serve the Chaos Gods
Edit: apparently it's a psychic virus but still oddly fitting said Virus could also have affected the early Tyranids
Definitely my favourite Legion, always bought into the third Primarch but had never considered the third head representing a third way 🤯 That's what I love about Alpha, they make your head fall off at every turn hahaha. Not sure if they're still at it in the current Dark Imperium era but found it really interesting they were happy for none Astartes to identify as being part of the Legion, respecting their roles and achievements during The Heresy, in many ways the most inclusive Legion as they're not Great Protectors like The Salamanders or simply see mankind as servants like The Dark Angels (or chattle like World Eaters) they respect humans as humans can do what Alpharius can't sometimes. In this instance it was Alpharius who died. Omegon felt the psychic backlash of his passing half a galaxy away. Joe bloggs marines don’t do that.

Not disagreeing with you - I just know that - from my perspective only as an old hand but certainly not even your equal in knowledge I'd wager - retcons and unreliable voices can make anything grey again. Was it omegon or Alpharius? Not sure. I know I should be, but I am not. Perhaps I am just romanticizing the thing too damn much, but we all know I do that endlessly. :)

Seems to me as though they're more likely agents of the Emperor, rather than devotees of Chaos. Their tendencies aren't those of chaos undivided: decay, sensation and bloodshed don't typify them. That only leaves change, Tzeentch, who is renowned for mutations of form.
