- What's up guys? A short little how-to video on how to get off a rusted on rotor when beating the crap out of it with a hammer just doesn't work. I have a '98 Camry that sat for a year here in New England. After taking off the front wheels, I found the front pads with parts of the backing plate rusted off. The driver's side rotor was frozen in place with rust. I tried some JB Blaster. I tried various hammers, ball-peen, small sledge. Not a hint of movement.
Then I found your video. I had only one bolt that fit but this started working right off the bat. I tightened and rotated three times. Each time moving a little more. Easy! Thank You!

I was in out of options until I ran across this video. Tried this method and was never so excited to hear the subtle crackling followed by finally a snapping sound of the rotor being disengaged, along with the sight of rust dust. Victory was mine and the next and final rotor's bully tactics were no match for this method as I repeated the same steps on the front driver's side, completing everything in nearly NASCAR pitstop speed and able to enjoy the rest of my day.
Dude, just wanted to say thank you! You saved me hours, maybe days, of beating, heating, and treating. I've had some stuck rotors and usually my "go to" method is my 8" claw and gear puller. But today I was working on my SUV and the rotors were larger than the puller could expand. Your method is great. You're awesome GoodeZilla!

I beat on mine, I used Kroil oil - which breaks everything, I layed hands on it and prayed, got a bigger hammer….. and NO movement. Then I watched your video! Maybe 30 sec and it was off. THANK YOU! All I could see in my mind before your video was either a torch or a tow truck embarrassingly taking my car to the garage to have a mechanic finish my very easy brakes. Blessings to you.

Best advice I’ve ever received on UA-cam helped out so much. I spent the last hour hammering and doing all sorts of crap and bam literally 5 min it’s off.
Absolutely Brilliant. I spent hours trying to remove the rear rotors on my sons 2013 Camaro, and to no avail. In desperation, I went to UA-cam and found your video. Within minute they popped off. In place of the impactor, I just used a standard 3/8” socket wrench on the bolt. Worked perfect. Thanks for sharing the tip.

Excellent tip, worked great. Beating on them with a hammer was going nowhere, this worked really well. It put a big mark on the rotors but the rotors I was removing were junk anyway so no issues there. These are the best kind of UA-cam instructional videos. Short and to the point, and easy to follow. Was just changing my rotors for the first time today and the left one was STUCK. This method surprised both me and my dad and worked great! Will remember it in the future.
This! This was what I needed. I ran to the hardware store, got a bolt and nut and got that rotor off so fast compared to all the whacking and grunting I was doing before. Thank you for sharing!!

Thank you for this video, this trick saved me yesterday! After trying with a heavy hammer without success i didn't know what to do. Luckily i found your video and got the job done. Over the years the disc has rusted so solid that it made a loud bang upon separation. Like when removing balljoints.
So this method should work even with the rustiest of brake discs.
Thank you!!! Worked like a charm on my 2012 Ford Escape today which spends most of its time in the rust belt. Very quick. I used both caliper bracket holes with two shoulder bolts, nuts and washers with 3/4 inch heads. Just went back and forth between the two since the car was in park and I couldn’t spin the front rotors. Both rotors separated in less than a minute once I started ratcheting. The sound of that rust seal breaking was awesome.
Absolutely legend of a video. Spent 3 hours hammering with no progress. Got it off in under 5 with this. I do recommend getting two bolts to push from top and bottom hole to divide the pressure to not risk breaking your knuckles.

I am also here to sing high praise of this video. It really saved my ass when I told my buddy I could do his brakes and rotors. Passenger side came off with some persuasion. Driver side wheel took a beating to break free and the rotor was taking second to no issue afterwards. So much gunk around the hub rotor connection in the front and we beat on it til the cows came home. Actually more like 30 minutes which is about my previous rotors removal tolerance. Thanks to this video I will now bow to no rotor. Great trick and I’m sure you didn’t invent it. You did make it easy to find and easy to follow. Thanks again car friend.
You saved me a couple busted knuckles. Couldn’t get an impact in there but with a ratchet and some muscle I heard the beautiful pop of the rotor breaking the seize. Awesome low cost useful tip!

For those wondering screw sizes... Most caliper mounting bracket bolts are m14, most equivalent size in imperial is 1/2. So a size down would be 7/16ths, then 3/8ths. In metric the next lowest would be m12 or m11
I did 3/8 and had it off in less than a minute

Hey, I really appreciate you sharing your technique. I was going crazy and using a screw with a clamp turning it and didn’t work. This solved my problem in 1minute compared to 1/2hour going crazy lol

Massive thanks. I beat on my rotors for an hour, didn’t budge, got super frustrated. The hammer method also worked, but not this time. Got some bolts, 5 mins later OFF! Saved me from the dealer charging god only knows what for this normally simple job. Once again, a big thank you for this video!

Watched your video, dashed to my nearest "industrial hardware store," got two 3/8" bolts, nuts and washers and gave it a try . . . the first one finally cracked open . . . sounded like a gun shot and I thought: "OMG--what have I done???!!!" but on close inspection the rotor had just broken free . . . no damage to the car! Thanks so much for sharing this amazing technique!!! The other side broke free very easily with your technique--no "big bang!"

Thank you for sharing this amazingly simple but effective procedure. This popped my stuck rotor off first try. It took only a couple of minutes to set it up. I used both bolt holes at the same time to better distribute the force and turned the bolts with a pair of hand wrenches. You get a well-deserved thumbs up!

Hi. I don't normally comment on UA-cam videos but this is an exception. After a lot of head scratching I nearly gave up on trying to remove my Brake Discs (UK name) I resorted to youtube to try and find a solution. I bumped into yours so gave it a try. Amazingly after a lot of turns on the Disc it 'Cracked' and the disc was free! Thank you so much for this solution it worked very well... Now I need to do the other side.... 😄😅

I am not typically a person that comments on stuff, but I have to THANK YOU!!!!! I was doing a full 4-wheel brake job and the last one was seized badly. I only have this one car and I am pretty far away from anywhere i could rent a puller. I was not sure what to do and then i saw this. I had to take a piece of 1/4" steel to "bridge" across the rotor as the bolts were hitting right on the edge of the inside hub but that worked well. Again, thank you sooooooooo much!!

Iwas working on my van and the rear brake rotor with integrated bearing where stuck. i used your methode only difference i used hand tools because of the bearing . moved the rotor 90 degrees at a time until it came off. THANKS THANKS THANKS! Didn't even need the impact driver. This old SOB can't believe how easy it is to be a DIY guy these days...back in the 80's I'd be losing my mind and have no one to reach out to.... I'd like to think I'd figure this out, but I was leaning toward gear puller!

Thanks for creating and posting this video!!! My experience...I noticed that tires needed rotating on the 2007 4runner. A wheel stud snapped while tightening a lug nut on the first 2 tires in the rotation. The lug nut seemed to be taking more turns to tighten than the other lugs then it snapped. I took a break then finished the last 2 tires with a torque wrench. The next day...the rotor would not budge after several minutes using a rubber mallet and a hammer & a block of wood. This video popped up in a search. There was just enough clearance for a 3/8" nut to fit between the rotor and brake caliper mounting arm. One nut fell between the rotor and backing plate, but I bought 3 nuts and 2 bolts. Also, I am glad that I had a bottle of anti-seize to apply to the contact surface of the wheel bearing assembly and rotor to help the next person that needs to remove the rotor.
BE VERY CAREFUL DOING THIS!! - I found out the hard way and ended up with bent calliper brackets!! I have now added washers to try and stop the carrier from rubbing, but now have uneven wear on my rotor due to the outer edge being further away
Yup, bent caliper mounting points is possible. Instead of using a smaller bolt, I used the caliper bolts. And my rotor was stuck so bad I almost stripped the threads!

Dude! This tip saved me big time. I managed to get one side off of my '08 Volvo V70 by hammering so I figured to do the same again. I beat it for hours until my arms were tired then called 2 friends to help beat on it more. Sprayed it, heated it & used a puller with no success. Started to crack the rotor off it's hub and stopped beating on it. It got dark and I packed away the tools figuring I'd have to pull the strut & get it pressed off at a friends machine shop. **Then I found your video!**
Next day I found some bolts on hand and set it up like you showed (very nicely.) When I heard it pop loose, I practically lost my $hi+! Still took some work back & forth to get it off, massive rust on the hub rim.

Thanks for the tip, worked on one of my rotors, the other one the e-brake pad was rusted to the rotor, ended up getting my neighbors large gear puller. Will definitely use this in future endeavors

Not all rotors have the jack screw (tapped holes) machined into the rotor, and this is an excellent solution without using a bfh.👏 Pro tip that is useful for this and other applications. As always, Goode stuff, Dustin! Cheers, buddy.👊
Exactly! The new rotors that I put on, have the screw holes for helping remove them...but the stock rotors didn't. So as you saw I had to do this for both sides...worked great! Have a great Sunday Mick!

Awesome idea. I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee and used this on the front rotor and pad replacement both sides. I wasted a lot of time/effort with the hammer on the right side and your method worked in a few minutes. Didn’t even bother with the hammer on the other side as your method was quick and straight forward. Thank you!

thank you for your post, my new go to way for removing stubbornly rust seized rotors. After aboutr 3 hour of heating tapping and banging i went to youtube and found this post, and for a 57 year old working on a 99 ford F150 w/ 260k miles my rotor was litterally welded to the center hub. But once i used your method as you ddescribed i heard a old sound "PING" - the sound of rust freening itself. So i spent the rotor to a different position and repeated the procedure 3 more times, 30 minutes later i was back on the road! Well described, easily executed, mechanically effective!!

Omg, how easy is this. My rear brake rotors looked like they had been on from the factory in 2004 truck because they still had the small stud lock collars on them. You could see the rust line around the center hub portion where the rotor meets it was solid. Your video was the first one I saw and bam, 5 min is all it took, each side. Didn't damage anything. These rotors also have the drum internal for the emergency brake. That bolt is now a part of my toolbox. To add to your tip, I added another nut at the end of the bolt for more surface area to contact the rotor face. This works great!

Just want to come here to say thank you for posting this video (I rarely post anything online haha!). My rotors are old and rusty. I hammered the hell out of them and sprayed 1/2 bottle of WD40 to no avail. The two threaded holes on the rotors were too corroded to do anything good. Finally I watched your video and grabbed two long 3/8 bolts. I followed your steps, but I did it manually with a wrench. I didn't want to bend the knuckle that holds the caliper with an impact wrench. Finally, I heard a loud pop and the rotor was released. That was such a satisfying sound!! For those who struggles, I think the key is to do it slowly. Tightens and releases the bolts. Rotates the rotor and repeats. Don't over-tighten cause it may bend the knuckle or strip the bolt. Eventually you will get it. I was replacing my rotors so I didn't care whether they get destroyed or not, but I would put something between the bolt and the rotor to prevent it from scratching and denting if I plan to re-use the rotor.
This is a great tip for a super annoying problem. I was banging at the rotor with a sledgehammer and it would not budge. I used the bolt technique and each one of them came free within a few seconds. I did not have an impact wrench so just cranked the bolt with a normal ratchet drive and a socket and it worked. The key thing was getting the pressure on the OTHER side of the rotor which this technique does.
I am constantly working on older cars, this is the best brake tip I have come across by far!

thanks, this helped me... didn't use the bolt method, but when I heard you hit it with the sledge hammer, I just grabbed my big hammer and wailed away at it.
I can't tell you how aggravating it is to have your dealer tell you (a) the caliper is seized (it wasn't), (b) the stabilizer bars are shot (they weren't) and (c) there was metal on metal contact (brake pads were still good). They wanted to charge me $1500 to do all that including replacing two perfectly good calipers. This is why I appreciate people like you contributing these videos to youtube. It's like you helped me save $1200 - $1300.
