I have an BS in Petroleum Engineering with almost 40 years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry. Twenty years international. If you're a US National DO NOT get a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Get a BS in CHE which is more flexible. Finding a job after 55 is almost impossible. Add in a hostile industry environment in the US you'll need to work internationally and the national companies will hire their nationals first. So think long and hard before you get a PE degree especially if you want a long term career.

Thanks for the question and for your interest in petroluem engineering. I don't know much at all about the North Sea or the market there, so I'll speak of the USA. The job market is hard for most industries right now, especially O&G. It's very cyclical and there's no way around that. Follow my advice in this video and that should help you stand out, but we're both small fish in a huge pond. There's likely to be times where we're out of work. Hopefully not though. In terms of getting a job, you can do some online applications, but I'm not fond of them at all and generally disregard them as a waste of time. You need to make connections within the companies that you're looking at and people in the industry in your local area. Maybe do some shadows, go to networking events, etc.. Once you've got the in it should be easier but still isnt a guarantee. Does this help?
How much calculus does a petroleum engineer use on a daily basis??? I hate integrals and derivatives and Cal 3 is getting me this semester...I have a 3.95 GPA and and an AS in Process Technology with emphasis on petroleum refining...I was operator for Chevron for about 6 years before I decided to become an engineer but I HATE the calculus how much of that do you use on a daily basis???
Thankfully practically zero. That would likely be the response of most PE's. There are definitely those who are more involved with modeling or programming who might use it. Not to say it would never come up, but it doesn't look to be too common. Having a basic understanding of it though is important, as nothing in our industry is really linear.

There are GIS analysts or techs in oil companies that are typically into lease, well digitization and at more advanced level, they develop GIS systems. Some geologists go in GIS side since it includes map creation and geologists are familiar in prod maps and heat map development. You dont need petroleum engineering for GIS. Today, IT degree with basic GIS and ESRI skills can help you get into GIS. Petro mostly work for upstream. GIS can work for upstream, midstream, land management, water and utility and distribution companies.
Hello! I recently graduated college to become a teacher. I was teaching for 6 months and realized that I wanted to go back to college and major in petroleum engineering. I feel motivated to go back and I'm exited! I am from West Texas and we have seen a radical change in the oil industry since the oil prices fell. I am starting my courses this summer but a lot of people are telling me to major in something else since all this is happening, do you think it is a good idea to continue this major? I feel that it will get better but people always telling me this has gotten to my head.
Hi Karina. I think you should finish what you started. Oil and Gas are here to stay. If you can't get a job domestically, you can always go to Canada, Australia, Middle East etc

Thanks for the question. There's definitely scholarships available you just have to search for them. Many petroleum related professional organizations will offer scholarships. Also, maybe checkout SPE. They might have some too.
I'm not good at maths, Chemistry and Physics, but I love to do Petroleum Engineering regardless of job insufficiency. Do you think I can do PE though I'm not good at those subjects?
I really want to pursue PE but I live in central west Texas (about 2 hours from midland/Odessa & 4-5 hours to dallas and houston) and really like the town I’m in. Is there no hope for me to live here once I graduate? I don’t want to travel everyday to one of these towns
There's still some options. Some roles can be rotational where you would live 2 weeks in company provided housing (on site or off site) and then you'd get like 2 weeks off. That might be a fair mix for you. Otherwise, just know there are a lot of other places with oil and gas too. For example, I currently live in the Denver area. There might be other areas that you wouldn't mind moving to. I did a video on where PE's work...you might check that one out.
I have a bachelors in electronics and communications engineering and started my career in the oil field industry where there were no opportunities for me in my Acadamic profession and since then I worked with service companies and reached outstanding outcomes after almost 10 years in the industry and recently I had an influence of pursuing a master of engineering in petroleum online. Do you advise I go for that ?
First, please realize that is it not just being good at math that will make a good engineer...in practice, math isn't usually what makes one great. However, in school, it's important to show your proficiency with it and we must be able to understand basic math principles and operations for the job. If you go into research, you would need to be much more proficient, however. Anyways, to do better grade-wise, I'd recommend checking out helpful UA-cam channels and math websites like Khan Academy. Once you surpass Khan's level, look for other math professor videos on UA-cam to reinforce your learning. Second, practice practice practice. Third, don't be afraid to visit your professor or professor's assistant and ask for help. Take good notes. Fourthly, utilize a strong friend group as I mentioned in the video. Try and do as good as you can, but keep in mind, the most important part is realizing what is happening, what it is useful for, etc... Knowing those things will be more helpful in the long run than knowing exactly how to do complex problems without error.

I'll try. I'm gonna have to be pretty broad. Conventional wells have many more styles, design, completions, etc...because it's a broader category. Unconventionals are way more similar.

A good resource for you might also be the video I posted recently on advice for international students. I would recommend the masters more for if you want to go into research or do some more advanced work. But yes, oil and gas companies hire internationals too.

Hamza Khan getting admission is not a problem. But you should have a strong reason for doing it and show that in your SOP. I’m a Petroleum Engineer myself mining is more safer than petroleum. Only if you’re passionate about PE, do it or else both pay almost similar mining being more stable

Good questions. They're definitely hard to answer because I cannot predict the future. Less demand would indeed decrease the price if supply is held steady. However, who knows how fast (or complete) the transition would be and if batteries are even the best option. Note that however, right now in the US, most electricity is generated from natural gas...so perhaps gasoline and oil prices could go down but what about natural gas prices? Hard to tell. Energy systems are quite complex and hard to predict impacts.

Sounds like a cool story! Have fun in Alaska...unfortunately I don't know too much about Alaska operations. If I was you, I'd look up the companies that operate there and start getting on their radar. Reach out, make connections, see what their job offerings are, etc. Other than that, just go to school as anyone else does, but just target those companies for internships and jobs throughout college and beyond.

You can come get the graduate master or PhD degree here in USA. Also Canada. Some famous schools are Univ of Texas, Texas AM, Colorado school of mines, USC, Univ of Kansas, LSU, La Lafayette, U Wyoming, Texas Tech.
I wouldn't recommend trying. Either get the degree or do something a step down from engineering. For example, be an operator, a tech, or something else.

Thanks for reaching out. Don't let your gender change your career path. It's irrelevant. I know and work with many phenomenal women in the oilfield and they all love it. Also, number of jobs or access to sites isn't dependent on gender...what they're talking about is old biases and preconceived notions about women on site...typically thought of by older men. This is fading out industry wide, as it has no place in our industry. Either way...like I said in my last comment, it's your mindset and approach...attitude. Even if you run into that, you CAN change their mind and prove yourself to those select few. But it shouldnt hinder you in hiring at all. BTW we all face biases in all industries in some way. Engineers in general face it from operators (field guys) and there are many examples. Again, this is in every industry.

You're going to have a tough time but really hardwork and focus is key. Just study extra hard and be resilient.

That might be a fair mix for you. Otherwise, just know there are a lot of other places with oil and gas too. For example, I currently live in the Denver area. There might be other areas that you wouldn't mind moving to. I did a video on where PE's work...you might check that one out.
I have a bachelors in electronics and communications engineering and started my career in the oil field industry where there were no opportunities for me in my Acadamic profession and since then I worked with service companies and reached outstanding outcomes after almost 10 years in the industry and recently I had an influence of pursuing a master of engineering in petroleum online. Do you advise I go for that ?

First, please realize that is it not just being good at math that will make a good engineer...in practice, math isn't usually what makes one great. However, in school, it's important to show your proficiency with it and we must be able to understand basic math principles and operations for the job. If you go into research, you would need to be much more proficient, however. Anyways, to do better grade-wise, I'd recommend checking out helpful UA-cam channels and math websites like Khan Academy. Once you surpass Khan's level, look for other math professor videos on UA-cam to reinforce your learning. Second, practice practice practice. Third, don't be afraid to visit your professor or professor's assistant and ask for help. Take good notes. Fourthly, utilize a strong friend group as I mentioned in the video. Try and do as good as you can, but keep in mind, the most important part is realizing what is happening, what it is useful for, etc... Knowing those things will be more helpful in the long run than knowing exactly how to do complex problems without error.

Subsea deals with subsea equipments like pipelines. So they are more mechanical/ structural engineering than petroleum engineering.

I'll try. I'm gonna have to be pretty broad. Conventional wells have many more styles, design, completions, etc...because it's a broader category. Unconventionals are way more similar.

A good resource for you might also be the video I posted recently on advice for international students. I would recommend the masters more for if you want to go into research or do some more advanced work. But yes, oil and gas companies hire internationals too.

Hamza Khan getting admission is not a problem. But you should have a strong reason for doing it and show that in your SOP. I’m a Petroleum Engineer myself mining is more safer than petroleum. Only if you’re passionate about PE, do it or else both pay almost similar mining being more stable

Good questions. They're definitely hard to answer because I cannot predict the future. Less demand would indeed decrease the price if supply is held steady. However, who knows how fast (or complete) the transition would be and if batteries are even the best option. Note that however, right now in the US, most electricity is generated from natural gas...so perhaps gasoline and oil prices could go down but what about natural gas prices? Hard to tell. Energy systems are quite complex and hard to predict impacts.

Sounds like a cool story! Have fun in Alaska...unfortunately I don't know too much about Alaska operations. If I was you, I'd look up the companies that operate there and start getting on their radar. Reach out, make connections, see what their job offerings are, etc. Other than that, just go to school as anyone else does, but just target those companies for internships and jobs throughout college and beyond.

I wouldn't recommend trying. Either get the degree or do something a step down from engineering. For example, be an operator, a tech, or something else.

Also, number of jobs or access to sites isn't dependent on gender...what they're talking about is old biases and preconceived notions about women on site...typically thought of by older men. This is fading out industry wide, as it has no place in our industry. Either way...like I said in my last comment, it's your mindset and approach...attitude. Even if you run into that, you CAN change their mind and prove yourself to those select few. But it shouldnt hinder you in hiring at all. BTW we all face biases in all industries in some way. Engineers in general face it from operators (field guys) and there are many examples. Again, this is in every industry.
