I worked for a Refactories contractor for 10 years dealing with anything at temps from 400° to 3500° in the field, One company we done work for was a Powdered metal process company that manufactured Rods, Shafts and Bearing Races among other products.
Its a very interesting process, as you state the base mix is a powdered (finely ground) metal with a wax added into it to help the part hold its shape after being forged in a press up to 300 tons, this forging process takes all of about 10 seconds, the mold slams together with such force that there is enough heat generated that the wax melts to help the part hold its shape, at this point the part is very brittle and shatters like glass if dropped, the part then goes into a gas fired leaher furance for tempering and strengthening and then through a carbonizing furance where carbon is introduced into the part for more strength, these 2 processes can take upwards of 3 hrs combined at temps reaching upwards of 2800°.
The finished product is what you hold in your hand before any machine work is preformed.
It is really an amazing process if you think about it, you start with a powder and wind up with a finished part that can withstand the forces of a 1000+hp or more engine. 😲 Simply Amazing

Great video as usual! I'm 53...been wrenching a long time...I am a helicopter mechanic... built a lot of bbc... and starting to lean towards building an LS. Have watched your vids for years, thank you for this one as I like horse power and making it as cheap as possible was kinda the way we did it in the 80's with big blocks. Thanks!

After watching numerous 'red neck' rebuild videos, it was very refreshing to see one done correctly and that respects the engineer's recommendations. Red Neck logic is best explained by example: a Red Neck farts, just then it begins to rain. The Red Neck concludes that farts cause rain.
Unlike these folks, all of your explanations seemed well researched and were pretty much correct. However, on oil flow and pressure you had the relationship correct but not the objective from an engineering standpoint.
The clearance does affect flow, but the clearance is not set to attain a desired flow in order to attain a specified pressure. The clearance spec. Is set by parameters including film strength, oil pressure, bearing area, force applied by the rod, rpm and some other factors. Each of these have their own individual factors such as viscosity, coefficient of friction, temperature and type in the case of the lubricant, and so on. It is actually quite complicated and often confuses the best of us. 🤯
Desired oil pressure is maintained by a pressure regulator, not by setting clearances. One pump must provide lubrication and hydraulic action for many different devices that have different requirements. Hydraulic lifters, for example, are very sensitive to pressure. They must generate enough linear force to open the valve, but not so much as to prevent it closing.
As the main and rod bearings wear and flow is increased, pressure drop occurs as you correctly pointed out, but it is the job of the oil pressure regulator to compensate. When the regulator can no longer compensate at idle due to all of accumulated clearance increases, a high volume pump can fix the problem. This may be what leads people to think the volume is what controls the pressure when in reality the opposite is true.

The powdered metal is actually made by blowing the molten metal at very high air pressures into a chamber through a nozzle and it actually nearly vaporizes the metal. It is not ground into a powder. I actually did some contracting work years ago at a powdered metal foundry where this exact metal powder is made and the process is very interesting how they do it. Once the metal is powdered it is run through massively long ovens that use hydrogen fueled nozzles to reheat the powder and dry it.

Where LS engines are concerned and stock components in the LS engines :
    N/A, the engine is Okay
Boost or Juice, set the ring gap loose
All of this is contingent on getting the tune right, sufficient timing, etc.
My N/A LQ4 6.0 with a Sloppy Stage 2 cam and BTR springs in 243 heads, along with hardened pushrods, bigger injectors TBSS/NNBS intake, 92mm cable operated throttle body and a tune runs fine.
So I'm adding an LSA blower. 8-10 pounds of boost.
While I'm building a stroker 6.0 with an L8T crank.
I'm not sure if my machinist loves me or hates me. He goes along with me, which is good enough. Next up, finding compression height for the pistons.

Sorry I think I missed the bit about the bore but did you bore it out oversized or just hone it? I was looking at the piston to see if it were say 30 thou oversized but am sure it said standard. From what you’ve said the bores are specially coated so does boring out remove that and therefore not advised? By they way your knowledge is amazing. Only comes with tons of experience.

Do all 350 blocks have to be machined for the 400 crank and big end of the rod. I was told this engine was a 383 it is .030 over, but with the pan off there is no machining done on the oil pan rail or anyplace else. is this possible. Thank you

    • @pjnelson5827
      @pjnelson5827 3 роки тому

Factory 3.75 inch crankshafts will have the larger 400 main bearings, but most aftermarket cranks will have the smaller 350 mains. Also, many aftermarket connecting rods will have smaller big ends so that there is less interference in the block. It is possible that your engine was put together with a nice aftermarket rotating assembly that was made for a 350 block, so required minimal fitting.

Torque to yield means we wanna convince you to buy new stuff when your old bolts are just as good, maybe even better, since they have been heat treated a million times and wont break like new ones right away! There is a study floating around on someone testing all three options, including studs! which are worse for street use in my opinion! Since they have a tendency to make the bearings into ovals, so you will need machining to use them correctly!

If you're gonna be pulling heads off regularly for a race application, put in head studs, it's that simple. No idea why guys think they're saving, or they're being "cool" by reusing tty head bolts. Those same guys that do that are the guys that say to "don't even look at the cam bearings" and ... they might have a point in a way, but they CAN and DO fail. @@Myvintageiron7512 since I’m planning to put edelbrock Avs2 on it so I’m gonna go with 800 cfm because the Avs2 are not available in 750 they jump right from 650 to 800 . So I think the 800 is just fine. Thanks appreciate it.
