That last comparison screen really makes a point. With enough rpm, a small amount of torque will give you the power, but more cubes means more torque where you’re going to use it on the street. I found it amazing that the 5.7 made the 500 hp with such a small cam. Most 5.3 blocks can take that 3.900 bore, and that might be easier than finding a 6.0... Another amazing presentation! By far my favorite channel.
Back in 2008, I used Dart heads on my LS1 with a too big cam from Futral. With the LS6 intake, ported stock TB, catted longtubes, Borla catback, SLP lid, 4.10 gears, and tune I made 430 rwhp. I ran 121 mph on street tires. Lesson learned, check Dart's valve guides as mine were junk brand new and after pulling them and getting them resleeved as it was drinking a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, it spun a rod bearing on the subsequent re-tuning pull.
LS3 LLoves cam's and boost. True words, My LS3 with LS9 cam and AGP twins made 605 at the wheels with low 15deg timing on pump 93. I feel the heads are a huge factor in these making so much power. I've seen several tests with the different heads in the LS family. What I would like to see is the new LT heads, if you Tig the Injector port closed and mount them on the LS family, they are said to out flow even the 823 heads stock. I was told by a head shop the stud pattern is the same.
According to Brian Tooley the extra air flow is due to the direct injection having an increased airflow rate of 8% due to the fuel not obstructing the airflow in the port. When you disable the DI and go straight port injection you are going to lose 8% of the airflow when you inject fuel into the port!
I know this is “ls how to” but I’d like to see the same thing with a small block and big block Chevy. Another video idea “should you build a big block or ls for your hot rod?” I’d like to see a dollar per horsepower comparison at a few different horsepower levels.
I think that 4.8 is a killer combo, if the 5.3 had the same top end as the 4.8 I bet it would have made at least 500 with more average power. If you look close you can see that the 4.8 didn’t loose any low end

I'm most impressed how little bore and stroke the 5.7 has over the 5.3 and the power curve is that big of a difference. Always seems like the 5.7 gets overlooked, wish I went that route Instead of 5.3 in my truck
5.3, 5.7, 6.0, and 6.2 LS engines all share the same stroke. Only the bore changes with each displacement change. I imagine that the higher compression that the ls1 is sporting, as well as the larger bore unshrouding the valves a bit more, are the likely factors in its dramatic difference vs the 5.3. Since many 5.3 blocks can take an over bore to reach the ls1 bore, building an iron block ls1 is a pretty straight forward process.

Can you use stock 5.3l lm7 push rods with Brian tooley stage 1 cam? I just bought new springs, pushrods, lifters, and upgraded rockers with bearing kit.
Great stuff! No one else does it like this, you are the man Richard! How about a comparison of the "truck" cams. I just put a BTR stage 1 truck cam in my 5.3. It runs great, but have no idea of "the numbers" it is making. The 400, 500, 600 etc combos are great, but at what point on these combinations, would I be needing a torq converter and or gears? Getting ready to build another 88-98 Chevy pickup with a 5.3. Based on ease of tuning and a target around 450-500, would you go n/a over turbo? Thanks again for putting out such great material.
The challenge for me is the limited availability of a decent manual transaxle from GM. The best they have now is the F40 that is only certified for 300ft lbs. I could go with the 4T80 that some guys are pushing well over 800hp but those are very heavy transaxles. So in this situation I'm seriously pushing the limits of the F40 with 500hp. I've hear of people getting gears cryo hardening. I have a lot of research to do.
So a buddy and I are gonna tackle my LS 6.0L LQ4 and 500hp would be my sweet spot I'm feeling..... can you point to place I could buy this sloppy 2 cam and I need springs as well? Thanks much appreciated

I just picked up a LY2 for my E36 Project, I'm gonna send the heads over too TEA for their Stage 2 CNC along with Hollow Stem Valves and hopefully milling the head down to 58 to 60cc and use 0.027 headgaskets. I also plan on running Brian Tooleys Custom Road Race Cam which is a 235/250 113+4 lsa .614/.605.
I'm on the fence whether I should stick with the TBSS style intake or pick up a Holley Hi-Ram
Love love love that you put the 5.7 in there for us aussies, Im looking at buying a local Holden here but it comes with the 5.7 and I'm not really sure of the 5.7's potential as ive driven one before and was disappointed, They feel flat to me when I compare it to the 2 litre turbo 4 cylinder powered car i have been driving that was made in the 90's. I want bottom end grunt through to high rpm or else why have a V8? HELP!
Mondy888 mond put a stage 1 cam and you’ll get a heap of low end improvement. The stock cams are generally tiny. Sloppy stage 2 would be great as well.
Oh and put a blower on it. 😀
@@philistineau Heres my plan as an over all package:
-Cam swap, grind unsure at this stage
-Springs, solid lifters etc
-Re lap all valves
-Head swap (factory heads but up the comp ratio and then hand port and CC chambers and alter chamber design if needed
-Port match intake and exhaust manifolds
-Lower the oil pressure to 45-50 pressure
-Sump mods
-Extractors
-Race plugs
-Multiple Big engine breathers
-Tune
Run the 6.2l with 706 or 799 heads with a cam! I picked up a l92 short block from the pick and pull yard and am going to run some 799s I also found. Wanted to get an idea of what kind of power it would make with just a cam upgrade
I did that with a 6.0L LY6
Did anyone else have the audio cutout between 11:40 and 12:29?
Hey Richard, did I hear you correctly? I have a 2004 lq4 from a Chevy express 3500 motor home and all I need is the sloppy stage 2 cam to break 500hp?
Okay now I want the 6.0 Ly6 with STG2 cam lol more I watch your videos the more I change my mind on what I want for my Yukon XL lol
Can u do more for a 5.7 power upgrade
Awesome. I have an 05 ls2 from a gto set up going in a 49 ford f1 pick up and am looking to run a turbo. Truck weighs 4300 lbs and will be running a ford 9 with 3:73 or 4:11 due to the t56 6 speed. What can will push me over the 500 with turbo
I have a 04 sierra 4.8. Watched both videos for the 400hp and the 500hp. Are u changing any fuel components, fuel rails, injectors, pumps? The fast intake manifold do u have part# used in the application? Appreciate ur time thanks!
Stock injectors won't feed this power level. We have a big pump on the dyno and these motors require bigger injectors
I made 461 on my 5.7 ls6 block
Will be nice if you add the number of the Injector size
I’m thinking about some ported 706 heads for my ls1 🧐
What is your preferred ECU, that would be an awesome vid. Thanks for all you do.
they all make the same AF and Timing-I usually tune with Holley (cuz I'm not a tuner)
@@richardholdener1727 Thanks
Can you use stock 5.3l lm7 push rods with Brian tooley stage 1 cam? I just bought new springs, pushrods, lifters, and upgraded rockers with bearing kit.
Yes you can!
@@richardholdener1727 thanks! Love the info and vids.
Rich, you have the best job in the world!!
I have the best WIFE in the world
@@richardholdener1727 LoL good call
The challenge for me is the limited availability of a decent manual transaxle from GM. The best they have now is the F40 that is only certified for 300ft lbs. I could go with the 4T80 that some guys are pushing well over 800hp but those are very heavy transaxles. So in this situation I'm seriously pushing the limits of the F40 with 500hp. I've hear of people getting gears cryo hardening. I have a lot of research to do.
Did you ever discover the AR5 transmission comes stock in the Chevrolet Colorado's and canyon
@@timbowalk They are rear wheel drive. The F40 is front wheel drive. The Fiero is a mid engine car that uses FWD components.
Perfect thinking on stopping the corona virus, also! I’ll be working on getting my egt’s up so the air will be purified
gonna light the wick on an LS1 with SS2 cam, 706 heads, and 11.1:1 compression. gon be fun!
So you just put a cam for the 4.8?? What lind of springs? Do you need a bigger. Torque converter?..
4.8 NEEDS MORE THAN A CAM FOR 500 HP, YES ON SPRINGS AND YES ON CONVERTER
So your pistons crank is stock on the 6.0
Hi just wondering if you can run these set ups with out a new tune.
NO
So a buddy and I are gonna tackle my LS 6.0L LQ4 and 500hp would be my sweet spot I'm feeling..... can you point to place I could buy this sloppy 2 cam and I need springs as well? Thanks much appreciated
that is an easy search on google
