- As night falls on February 16th, 2007, two men race towards destiny as the field behind them is consumed in a torrent of fire, smoke, and sparks. How did it come to this? Who are these two guys? Why did no one pick them to win this race? And how did Clint Bowyer finish this race on his roof and on fire? Well, let's rewind and find out.

“Clint Bowyer upside down and on fire” is arguably as iconic as that actual finish
I miss that 07 Jack car. What a cool looking paint scheme.
He's lucky as hell not to have gotten screwed up in that one.
Finished 18th too lol. Not too bad
@@Razz415 dude hell yeah. Badass paint scheme
@@Razz415 It was nice to see JD's on Austin Dillon's car at the roval last year
Well, this is officially the 2nd craziest Daytona 500 ever.
No this was the craziest
Are we forgetting 2012 boys?
Earnhardt Sr dying doesn't rank???
@I don’t know what I’m doing All the time you're right. That actually brought tears to my eyes.
2021 update: *3rd craziest*
Larry- “Will unofficially finish upside down in the 18th position”
Darell - “On Fire. I mean, Joey Chitwood couldn’t do that”
Joey Chitwood - “Is that a CHALLENGE?!?”
Great vid S1ap. Keep them coming!!
Oh yeah, congrats on 50k subscribers!
This is brilliant storytelling. That was a storybook finish for sure. I felt bad for Mark. I was rootin hard for him, as my driver, Gordon, was back there in the back of the top 10.
What a finish. What a video.
Wow, amazing video, really hits home, your commentary at the end was beautiful. I remember watching this live in 2007 and while I can't say I remember the rest of the race, as a life long Mark Martin fan, this finish will forever be burned into my memory. As much as it hurt then, I look back on as proud moment, no dirty racing from either of them, just two gentlemen, laying it all out on line.
I had started watching nascar some in 2006 and enjoyed it but I was only 7 with the attention span of a goldfish but this race just a few days after my 8th birthday is what made me a nascar fan for life. I can also happily say that my favorite race of all time was one of the greatest of all time.
That last minute pass made me go like......YEEAAH!! What a hail mary of an overtake!
This is some of the finest narration I've ever heard, good job👍
These videos are awesome. Outstanding work! Liked and subbed.
I remember watching this race with my dad. RIP dad!
Another great video!!
The 3 attempts at a green white checker finish didn’t come up until the
2010 Daytona 500. One attempt was all they got in this race. If a yellow came out after the green the race was over regardless if they made it back to the white or not.
Harvick start this race 34th snd won unbelievable
Whose a worse person?
Harvick for passing Martin at Daytona? Or Hamlin for passing Matt DiBenedetto last year at Bristol?
Heck Slap, that's a good topic for a future video!
"Biggest heartbreaks in NASCAR history"
Wasn't there a five wide a year or two back at the Daytona 500 how come I can't find it?
S1ap its 3 15 am let me sleep bro
And Mark drove what was essentially the 36 Pontiac Ken Schrader drove in 2001. I hope y'all do realize that.
Yeah, Harvick driving what was the black 3 and Martin driving what was the 36. Almost like it was meant to be, again, just like a movie.
@@48fanfromky As S1ap said in the video
I never realized that. Holy shit man that's fucking mind-blowing.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I didn’t even think about that... that’s wild.

Hahaha!
You spelled "blackflagsmatter" wrong
SovietOnion you spelled “TNTman93” wrong
Cody blackflagssucks and in a year or so, S1ap will be the biggest nascar UA-cam content creator.
My Dad said he was watching this race and was cheering for Mark Martin to win, only for one of his least favourite drivers to win.
When they were interviewing Martin, they asked him if he was disappointed and upset that he he came only inch’s from wining the 500
However Mark replied with saying
“I just came second in the greatest race in the world, I feel amazing”. That goes to show what kind of guy Mark Martin is.
He's a great sport
I remember this race and Mark saying that. He was one of the best
Mark still earned $1,102,258 for finishing second
@@CJODell12 I wouldn't be mad either
The fact that everyone behind them was affected in the wreck leaving those 2 alone side by side for the lead is almost movie like.
It looked like a scene in Cars
If they gave Academy Awards for UA-cam videos, you deserve one.
As a die hard Mark Martin this was the most painful thing to watch.
My mom loved mark Martin she screamed so loud when he lost the neighbors called to make sure she was okay
0:37 That’s bizarre that a submarine could sink A FREIGHT TRAIN
Well a landing crew sabotaged and blew up the tracks and derailed a train but I guess that's sinking one... also more famous of bizarre history in war being the fate of Germany's most advanced battleship being sealed by a torpedo to the steering and propulsion by a lucky stringbag with wings that couldn't be hit because it was actually too damn slow to hit by AA.
As the saying goes, History is often stranger than Fiction.
JonManProductions yes it is indeed
*could sink a freight train*
@@JonManProductions Didn't expect to see you here.
That’s just history for you
This is like an unofficial episode of SB Nation's Rewinder.
Welcome, to a moment in history.
Even uses the same music too I think? Absolutely excellent. Incredible job, this video is a masterpiece
i thought it was for a second there
He very clearly follows their format, even down to the song used at the end.
That's definitely what he's going for.
An underappreciated sport like NASCAR deserves a series like this.
Came here to say the same thing. Few months late watching the video but really enjoyed it. Would have always like to see rewinders for motorsport, specifically nascar and indycar, hopefully Slapshoes delivers some more.
Can someone tell me what the songs are? I can't find them on UA-cam or Google
One of the best parts of this is Harvick saying “I got so excited I broke the damn mirror in half!”
I don't watch nascar but your videos are so interesting.
Ditto.
Well, if you ever wanted to watch just one race, then today would be your day. The Daytona 500, the 2020 version of the very race mentioned here, will be starting in just a few hours.
Sounds like you should start watching!
@@Director_Orson_Krennic You jinxed it
There are a lot of big changes coming to NASCAR over the next two-ish years. Now is as good a time as any to get into it.
This was the first race I ever watched and it's always awesome to see a video on the subject. Like opening a lost closet box and finding a ton of old stuff you loved.
Thank you, S1ap.
Clint Bowyer: You finished side by side?........That’s cute
Why did I read that in Clint's voice
I believe the Exact words were and quote “upside down and on fire.”
As a mark Martin fan. That race finish hurt so bad. I remember watching it on TV stunned that he had come that close to winning the Daytona 500. I found your channel because of these videos on Mark Martin. I gotta say as someone who hasn't cared about Nascar since he retired. You've put a little spark back in my heart for the sport. Thank you
I'm still bumbed Mark Martin didn't win. He always had shit luck
I think Alex Bowman’s Valvoline paint scheme that he’s currently running reminds me of Mark Martins paint job that he ran in the 90s.
Probably didn't expect such a short shelf life for this vid, huh? Coincidentally i was waiting til after this years race to watch. And what an insane finish we got...
Videos like these just put the hype up for this years Daytona 500 up another few notches. Great stuff as always!
And the hype led to a rain shocked Daytona 500 that is still delayed
@@nathancao520 Yes... unfortunately it was a letdown of the highest magnitude this year...
This didn’t age well
That was such a close race last year
This video is as great as the '07 Daytona 500 finish! Great job! Also, I love the poetic feel to this starting at 8:21.
I remember pulling for Mark after that caution. Hes always been a cool guy.
Heck of a finish though. Hope to have a finish like that today.
Me after 2020 five hundred “Maybe not”
I would nominate the 2020 Daytona 500 now
I say 2021
Then this year happens
Great video, and I can tell it's a significant moment for you personally as a Mark Martin fan. For me, this race still stands out in infamy as my brother and I picked Tony and Kurt to win the race. Kurt was my pick, so I followed his progress most of the week. It may seem like it in hindsight, but hardly anyone seemed to be picking Kurt to win that 500. He was overlooked in each broadcast, including the Shootout, where he ran 3rd, and the Twin 125s, where he finished 2nd to Jeff Gordon only because Gordon had an illegal car. He broke out in the 500 itself, when he led most of the laps because Tony Stewart's dominant car kept giving up track position with miscues on pit road. It would've been incredible if they both made the distance as they were clearly the class of the field, but that's how things go in the 500. At least Kurt didn't finish last like Tony - which I still rib my brother about.
I watched this race at a bar called "The Bar" in Goodview, Minnesota with my girlfriend, Denise. At the time she was from Minnesota and I was from Ohio. It was the first race she'd ever watched, and her and I even had a picture on the front page for a local newspaper from Winona, Minnesota. I saw a young man taking pictures at The Bar and asked (somewhat jokingly) if he was a freelance photographer? He replied that he worked for the Winona Daily News, and I told him I was in town to see Denise and watch the 500 with her. He asked If I would mind if he pictured us for a spot in the newspaper, and I said of course not. That would be great! The picture that made the newspaper was of me fist pumping the start of the 500 and yelling "Yesss!" and Denise sitting next to me smiling beautifully at the television while I expressed my enthusiasm. As the race came to the conclusion I was rooting for Mark Martin to win. I am a die hard Dale Jr. fan, but I truly wanted to see Mark get a pinnacle win on his career. Of course Mark didn't win, but I was not terribly hurt by Harvick taking the checkers either. Denise passed away from complications from a surgery in 2013, but I still remember this race as a highlight in our relationship. It was the day she became a true NASCAR fan like myself. Thank you for the break down, S1apShOes. You brought back many fond memories for me this evening.
This might've been a little emotional atleast as a Mark Martin fan
Not anymore after tonight... prayers for Ryan Newman...
This really makes me that much more excited for the 500 today lol
This race was the first race I ever watched and after I was hooked. I still remember my dad accidentally turned on the race and in slow-motion Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch we’re crashing off of turn 4.
"i got so excited i broke the damn mirror in half". yup, thats Daytona for you
Only in Daytona
That on-board shot from Harvicks car shows you how much side drafting it took to get from 7th to 1st in 5 miles. Brilliant video.
Nothing like getting a slap shoes video just waking up. 👌
I've been a lifelong Harvick fan and was standing up on the couch watching this whole race. Was in 3rd grade and went to school way too hyped up on Monday. Gives me goosebumps every single time I watch those last few laps.
I’ll never forget witnessing this on Live television
And then there was last night!
Yo i just want to say that your videos have made me interested in NASCAR, whereas a month ago I couldn't have cared less. Very informative, and very easy to follow even when not knowing much about the sport. Props! Hopefully it makes a big comeback as I think now more than ever we need these non-human to human contact sports.
0:04 Larry Mac is the GOAT the way he says "side by side". He's so underrated..
This is why i love Sports, in particular Motor Racing. Its full of stories you just couldn't write.
The final year of the Gen 4 in Cup. That style of car will be missed.
I’ll never forget watching this live! Still wish Martin won, but what a finish!
I have had the very fortunate circumstance of making it to see the Daytona 500 twice in my life so far. Strangely both ended with a car crossing the start finish line upside down and on fire. (2007 and 2020)
when Mark got out of this ride after running the first few races I believe he was 1st or second in points.
I was thinking how this felt like an SB Nation video and how you ought to say, "Welcome to a moment in History" right before you let the moment speak for itself. And then you did. Also how about Bowyer finishing the 500 in the most Clint Bowyer fashion possible, upside down and on fire. 😂
Martin should have won TBH
In other rulings, he should have.. but yeah, those years were weird.
Hey S1apshoes being a die hard mark fan as a kid like me, I’m sure you were pretty disappointed that day. I can clearly remember going to bed right after this just furious! But hey mark took it graciously and Kevin’s the man I pull for every week now ... still this one always stings! Great video keep me coming! 🏁🇨🇦
I hated this race. It looked like Mark Martin would win but Kevin was still the closer and Mark was always the second driver.
I saw the Rocking Chair when I went to Mark Martin Ford in Batesville.
Hey random person scrolling down the comments..
Have a wonderful day :)
Mark Martin-Mark Webber. Extremely talented, had their chances, but always something went wrong at the most important time and they finished 2nd...
DimZ at least Martins team had his back
@@BMK500 true
I remember seeing this race live on tv. So many wrecks that year and I was only a little kid rooting for Gordon. Then I saw Martin and Harvick side by side in the last lap and I was just awe-stricken at the events that happened behind the two. Bowyer flipped and on fire going through the infield, seeing the Number 5 spin out and cause the last Big One of that race and then seeing that most iconic finish of the 29 and 01 was just incredible.
I watch this raced. I always remember "that time Clint Boywer finished the Daytona 500 upside down." I was a Tony Stewart (IDK RN, havnt followed in YEARS). I dont rember much, but i was probably pissed about that crashed.
I remember seeing this race on TV as a kid. It was definitely the moment that I got super into NASCAR.
Long time Mark Martin Fan I hate I thought he had it the wind in 07 Daytona 500 how's the fan 95 to 2013 until he retired that's okay not winning the Daytona 500 and that's okay not to get a championship I have accepted that now Mark will always be a champion
This was the race that made me want to learn more about Nascar, Quick rundown here: i'm Brazilian, i was 12 years old when i saw two guys drag race each other on a Brazilian tv sports program here. After this race i started to learn english just to search more about the sport, i bought and played a lot of Nascar Thunder 02 and 04 on Playstation 1 and 2 using Dale Sr, Harvick and Ricky Rudd's #28 Texaco car on Thunder 02 (i've always love black racing cars), This is the race that i got hooked up on Nascar and even started to learn a new language just to know more about it, where it came from, who was the best driver, the paint schemes, etc.
Thank you 2007 Daytona 500 for bringing me all this!
You know this always makes me feel sad because Mark was so close to getting at least the 500.
Hey slapshoes, first let me say I really enjoy your videos, you do great research. But I was wanting to make a video request for a video about superspeedway/restrictor plate racing dominance. I recently seen a list of active drivers with superspeedway wins on the Nascar app, but they only counted points paying races, and Brad K had the most with 6. Dale Jr won 6 times just at Talladega, and then like 17/18 times at Daytona counting non-points and points races. And Dale Sr won 10 times at Talladega and like 34 times at Daytona counting all races. I think a video on this topic would be interesting, it would be cool to see active drivers totals counting all non-points and points races and also who else in the past was as dominant as the Earnhardt's
I keep rewatching it hoping Mark Martin somehow wins
*FUCKING HELL S1apSh0es ..... your passion for NASCAR is OUTSTANDING*
I'm not even a fan of NASCAR & I was glued to my seat for this one !!
One note here: Mark Martin had two Talladega wins; one in 1995 and the mentioned 1997 race.
The Closer closed, and S1ap’s man finished second..... dang
Annnnnd I'm crying again. Great editing and storytelling as always 💗
If only Mark had covered the top line, maybe he could have had a Daytona 500 to his credit, but that just speculating on my part, in a what if sense
You think The 2007 Daytona 500 deserves a closer look how about the season
Well now I think we have a new crazy finish #prayfornewman
Newman is expected to survive.
1976 and 1979: “Am I a joke to you?”
This race is so bittersweet for me. Mark Martin is also my favorite race car driver of all time, but this race was so damn good. I know everyone talks about how incredible the 1992 Hooters 500 was, but the 2007 Daytona 500 will likely forever remain my favorite race of all time
Ah Yes
The Finsh That Made Mark Martin Fans Wanna Forget
Had a "golden boy" like Gordon or Davey Allison or even Jimmie Johnson been in the lead when Kyle Busch crashed, would NASCAR have thrown the yellow/checkered?
Broke my heart as a kid to see my favorite driver come up short and I hated Kevin harvick for years for what felt like to me stealing my guys win but he won clean and now he’s going into the history books as not only one of the most polarizing drivers ever but one of its greatest champions ride off into that sunset Kevin harvick you earned it
And, you forgot one thing:
This was the *LAST* Daytona 500 of the now iconic Gen 4 cars.
That was a true farewell to the 500 from these cars. They said what they were: Fun and hell chaos in earth.
I’m a big fan of both and they both have stuff to prove by winning this so I wouldn’t really care which of the 2 won
The saddest Daytona 500 ever
If you were a die hard Mark Martin fan
Otherwise it would be 2001
2:36 Fun fact: I have the right quarter panel off of that very car in my room. 2001 Daytona Busch race. It has the verification sticker and everything
no joke, mark martin retweeting this let me know you uploaded this.
As a diehard Mark Martin fan this one really hurt. 16yr old me went from jumping in celebration to throwing the remote in disgust
As an Arkansan, Mark Martin is one of the best people to come out of this state. Like Dan Mario, he couldn't win the championship. He's one of the best of all time.
I don’t know why rcr ever brought back the three 2001 should have been the last time we ever saw the 3 in NASCAR
Mark Martin finished second in the Daytona 500 and second in the points championship 4 times. He always came up just short.
It would be super neato to see a feature on 71 Dave Marcus! The wing tip shoes!
are you going to Daytona 500? because i go to school in daytona and a meetup would me cool
This was it. I was six years old at the time and this was the first race I ever saw. And now all these years later I look back and see what a hell of a race started one hell of a passion for me
Its funny Harvick bush Stewart Martin bowyer would all drive stewart-haas cars later on
I remember Clint saying the only way his finish would have been cooler is if he won the race upside down and on fire.
