  • While many of the sport's most popular drivers have come and gone, one man stands alone at the top of the pile as the perineal fan favorite. A humble soft-spoken Georgian, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville is THE most popular driver of all time in NASCAR history. So let's find out how he became so popular and why it's so important to NASCAR's history.

S1ap you forgot one of the most important and telling tidbits of all in this video...
Bill Elliott's popularity not only led him to withdraw from the ballot, but it also results in Chase Elliott not even going by his real name...Bill Elliott II. Try Googling that name to see for yourself.
Even Dale Jr. himself never felt led to do that.

So now we have videos on Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, Bill Elliott, and an entire series of videos about Mark Martin. Now we just need videos on Harry Gant and Kyle Petty and we'll have videos on all of the drivers that could have won the 1992 championship going into Atlanta, as well as a video on the race itself.

I couldn't agree more. I've been a diehard NASCAR fan since 1972. To me, the 1992 season was the best ever. Although Bill was my guy, I liked all six that went into Atlanta with a chance that year. I was at that race. The crowd went insane when Kulwicki was announced as the winner of the championship. Probably the absolute best feel-good moment I've ever witnessed. Thanks for the great video Slap... and YES!!! Finish this series out with Harry Gant and Kyle Petty stories.

I remember when I was, like...five years old. My dad was VERY eager to take me to a car show that was happening in town. Now, at the time, Bill Elliott was (and of course still is) my hero.
Turns out the reason my dad took me there was because Bill was there signing autographs. And the line literally stretched around and zigzagged through the center hall there. He was only slated for short amount of time but he absolutely refused to leave until every last fan got their chance. And little kid me was ESTATIC.
Coolest guy I'd ever met. Anyone who says "Don't meet your heroes" clearly didn't have Bill Elliott as theirs.

I got back stage pass at M I S through B Parsons team. R Petty's 1000th start. Got to hang and talk to all kinds of drivers. Petty was mobbed all the time. Talk to Bennie, H Gant, M Martin. Got about 15 minutes with Elliot as he sat against a wall exhausted. But when I said something about his car he wouldn't stop explaining the technical questions I asked. Great detail and I think he liked the fact I understood all was he was explaining. Got his picture and actually posted it near a 1/25 scale model I built of the million dollar winning car with upside 9 looking like an" E". The model was on a trailer that was pulled by a Ford p/u painted to match the raceway. Wanted that picture signed but didn't bring it to the race.

It’s mainly thanks to UA-camrs like s1ap and EmpLemon that I’ve been able to actually learn more about the man in black. Funnily enough, my big bro was and still is a Jeff Gordon fan. Roush, Yates, and Penske were competitive Ford teams in that time span - he would have been a good fit at any of them.

It just makes sense. A musical piece piece to convey the sheer skill Bill had and power too. Just like Wing Zero. I always associated that theme with another Nascar driver: Jeff Gordon in his prime (1995-2007). Men like them were unstoppable. Dale Sr, if I had to guess would be Epyon.

It became Kasey Kahnes the very next Season but it’s still Bill’s & has his name on it & that’s why I built it.
It was dope though, I had to paint the whole thing , every piece , the body , all that , just decals is all that came to put on and it turned out great. Looks Official.

My dad's favorite driver, I still have many fond memories watching races with him. He would take the Nascar calendar, pull out all the pictures of the Chevy drivers, and place them around the dartboard in the garage. Our basement had a black and white checkered floor and Bill and other Nascar memorabilia everywhere. I still have all my Racing Champions cars with all the versions of Bill's 94 cars. He's a huge connecting piece between me and my dad who passed away before Bill's resurgence in the Dodge #9. And even though Chase drives a Chevy, he's my favorite driver now.

Bill was the reason I got into,NASCAR racing in the 80’s. We lived just a short drive from MIS and went to every august race. He owned that track in late 80’s, seemed unbeatable there. What a great career he had. He was shy, bashful but fast as hell on the track. Thanks for all the memories Bill, hope your son can do just as well.

This made me wonder what would’ve happened if Bill would’ve had a successful ride through the back-half of the 90s? This guy spent over 7 years (late 1994 to the second to last race of 2001) without winning once and still ended with 46 career wins. It makes me think if he was in a competitive ride, what could he have done? How many more wins, and possibly, championships, would Bill have had.
