      Hi everybody this is PS4 Controller Fixer23 here. I'm going to show you an important tip that may increase the lifespan of a PS4 Controller. Before I do that make sure to subscribe to my channel, and if you're already subscribed hit the thumbs up button. Also, don't forget to hit the notification bell to stay up to date on all my videos. Also, follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I have a patreon account now. For just donating $20 a month I can continue you great videos and I'll send all the people who donate a lock of my hair and picture of my PS4. Let's get started. *Pointless 30 second intro. This video is brought to you by Raid Shadow Legends. Now I usually stick to games on the console, but this mobile game is so phone. I was hastened of this game at first, but after 30 seconds I was hooked. This is easily my most played game. You can have fun playing too. Link is found in the description below. So I have a special guest with me today. Say hi to PS4 Fanboy8. Thanks for helping me out Fanboy8. I'll be joining him in a video on his channel in the future, so subscribe to his channel. You don't want to miss out. PS4 Controllers cost about $60. That is a lot of money. Doing this one thing could cause them to break. So don't do this. Really don't do this. I did this and it broke. I had to order a new PS4 Controller. It cost $60 and had to wait for it to ship. I highly recommend you take my advice.
      Do you mean as opposed to something like that?

    Super late to the party I know but just in case anybody is curious -
    Using any 5V USB power source will be absolutely fine. The Amps rating is simply the max the particular charger can output, it isn't forced into the controller rather the controller takes what it needs (up to the maximum output)
    Short version: You're ok to use wall chargers or any other 5V usb power source, same goes for new Dualsense controllers.

      @@AngeloT2001 could be the connection prongs in your cable and/or controller got slightly damaged or bent. This happens a lot. If they both get damaged then they won't line up but an undamaged cord can line up with a damage connector and an undamaged connector can line up with a damaged cord. So if the slots in your phone are not damaged, they can still receive charge from a damaged cord. The issue a lot of ps4 users run into is the two little triangle shaped prongs sticking up from the charger cord can get pushed down and will will not securely latch into the controller even if you push and hold the cord indy the controller with your hand. Many other devices have their own internal patches so that they can accept most 3rd party charges.

    Alright, hobby electricians guessing games aside: you do notice that the plug for the battery does not connect directly to the USB inlet, right? There is actual charging electronics inside the controller that make sure to not overcharge the Li-ion cell. The charging current will also be limited by it, so there is no harm in using a more potent charger, as it will only "provide" as much current as the device "accepts", so to speak. Many modern chargers are quite smart, I noticed that mine completely shuts off the power after the controller is fully charged to save some energy.

    Good advice, but I bought my PS4 in 2016 an I've never used it to charge my controllers since I turn it off when not in use. It's a waste of energy to put it in sleep mode just to charge the controllers. I'm not a daily game player nor even a weekly game player. I some times go a whole month without powering on my PS4 Pro. So if you play every day then you might be motivated to keep it on.
    I'm still using the same controllers after 4 years and I use a USB power HUB with 2 dedicated power only slots to do my charging of my controllers and of my other devices among which is my Galaxy Note 9 and my Galaxy 4 Tab. I have not experienced any issues to date with my controllers (no kids use them or abuse them) and I will continue doing what has worked for me. Also note that my USB HUB has overcharge and overcurrent protection, and is 5.0V and rated at 2.1A. I do, however, unplug the controllers after they've finished charging -- when I remember to do so, that is...

    Although I'm late to the video someone still may want some information regarding this.
    So, most "slow" phone chargers these days give about 5 volts at 2 amps while fast chargers like for example Quick Charge 3.0 from Qualcomm goes up to 12V at 1.5 amps. Here's the thing though, our smartphones communicate with the charger itself and if the phone either doesn't need that full 12 volts or it doesn't support quick charge then the charger reduces the current to 5 volts up to 3 amps if needed (in QC3.0).
    ALL this happens with good chargers though that sense what device you are plugging in and the device itself must have the required chip to communicate with the charger. If the device doesn't have that, for example there are many Bluetooth headphones that are charged at 5V at maximum of 1amp, tons of other devices as well, I got Bluetooth controllers that on the back says "Charging at 5V, 0.5amp or 1amp". If you connect a fast charger to that device then the charger may try to charge it as fast as possible, even if it doesn't go 12V, then it may go too much on the amperage. Don't forget that my example is about the QC3.0 which goes to 18W, there are so much faster chargers out there going up to 120W!
    Since I've never seen a solid information that these kind of devices like a PS4 controller have those chips that allow them to communicate with the charger to give the right current etc, it's always better to play it safe and use a old brick (yes, it's rare for newer ones to have low amps) that have a maximum of 5V at 1amp like that video stated. Personally I use for similar devices my old Xperia bricks which are 5V at 850mAh to simply not overcharge the battery and eventually kill it.
    Lastly, the dude that commented about his battery in the controller expanding from using a phone charge it may be from the reasons I already explained, a fast charger, a cheap charger that gives too much for a buck with zero safety circuits inside (I mean, what do you expect for such price except a house fire?) or simply a faulty battery in the controller, everything is a possibility.
    Hope this comment gave you some more information about the topic despite my long comment since fast charging is so deep with all these protocols out there from every company.

      It usually happens when you set your controller down flat when have it plugged in like how it shows in the thumbnail. I’ve tested it myself too. I’ve had two cables start disconnecting constantly around 4 months of purchasing them when i laid them flat. Now I unplug the cable every time I’m not using a controller for my PC, and it’s still working fine after nine months. It seems leaving it flat puts pressure on the chargeport and cable making it mess up overtime. Hope this helps you. Just disconnect the cable from the controller whenever you’re not using it for your PC.

    Been charging my controller with my wall adaptor for years and I've never had any issues and I won't stop tbh. Chargers don't usually force all their power into a device, it's more like the device pulls the amount they need (to an extent as sending too much power can still destroy them). Hence you can use a more powerful charger than your phone supports and your phone will only charge at it's max rate.

    • @garyt123
      @garyt123 2 роки тому

      Not power, voltage. Overvoltage may cause problems.
      You could plug a 0.5A rated device into literally ANY amperage charger and it will either take all the amperage it can get (if the charger is rated at less than 0.5A), in which case the charger may overheat, OR it will take exactly 0.5A (regardless of whether the charger is rated at 0.5A, 2A, 10A, etc.).
      However if you were to plug in ANY amperage charger with the wrong voltage (so 6v, 9v, 12v, etc.) then your device will be damaged. Thing is, that I know of, NO USB chargers have higher voltages than any USB port will accept. That's a standard. They are all 5v.

    I've been using the like this for years with no issues.
    The science behind wall chargers or any power adapters doesn't support your theory. They have to provide at least the power of the device they charge.
    If they can provide more they will adapt to the needs of the device.
    Only if they provide less they can cause actual damage

    • @Nicksperiments
      @Nicksperiments 4 роки тому

      That’s what I was thinking too. The chargers won’t put out 9v unless the device calls for it. Maybe there’s something wrong with the controllers that fools the quick chargers into thinking it’s a quick charge device

    • @migomezch
      @migomezch 4 роки тому +2

      Nicksperiments Chargers pretty much universally (and for USB, 100% definitely) supply controlled constant voltage up to a maximum current capability dependent on the charger. If your charger supplies 9V, it will always supply 9V, and this breaks down only if a device tries to pull more current from it than the charger can put out, effectively shorting it out even if there is some resistance from the device (and then, if it's USB, it will shut down entirely and turn on again intermittently until the "short" ends).
      The only special circumstance with USB is that Quick Charge allows the device to ask the charger to switch to a higher voltage (by communicating with a digital protocol over USB) which supports faster charging for devices that have this capability. The voltage would still be constant, but at a higher constant level.
      As Valentin said, what this video says is bogus. What's happening is most likely batteries going bad because they've exceeded their lifetime, have manufacturing defects, or suffered impact or heat damage of some sort. This is a normal thing batteries do. It could also come from issues in the controller's charge circuitry, which could be failing to stop routing power to the battery when it's fully charged. A charger cannot cause this to happen unless it's damaged and would fry a controller just as easily as a phone or any other device.

    "Overcharging" would imply a battery is hold a higher voltage than the manufacturer recommends. This is not a concern because the voltage is measured by the USB Devices (PS4 controller) charging circuitry and it stops when it gets to it design point. USB spec dictates 5volt +/- 5%. The battery likely stops around 4.2v-4.7v.
    The only way around this is to charge the battery outside the controller with a higher voltage source. You can not circumvent that internal charging circuit from outside the controller.
    Amperage is the measurement of the flow of electrons in a given circuit, this "flow" is why the term "amps" is used interchangeably with "current". The reason that's irrelevant is because we are talking about a specific load (PS4 controller). For example, all the wall outlets in a US residents home are 15 - 20 amps which is limited by a circuit breaker to protect personal and property damage in the event of a short circuit. You can plug a refrigerator that requires 10 amps and/or a night light that requires .1 amp into the same outlet with no fear of the night light exploding. Both devices will only use the amperage the require to operate NOT the all the amperage available.
    Put it this way, you recommend not using a charger that supplies more than 1000mA (1amp) meanwhile the ports on the PS4 are 1500mA (1.5amp) USB ports. The controller its 5v - 800mA which is the most they will be using (its right on the back).

    Good video but the thumbnail made me think it would be about something else to make sure the cable is positioned well in the controller while it's charging making sure it's not bent potentially damaging the charging port.
    This is an issue I've been having with dualshock 4s for years I predominantly use the usb cable to play I don't like having to worry about charge and when I stop playing I just leave the USB in and every DS4 controller I've ever had eventually became a pain cause the USB gets loose and falls out easily. My current DS4 I use cannot be played wired because of this and every time I need to charge it I have to find the perfect angle and leverage combination using a book to prop my DS4 up against my PS4 that's the only way the cable stays in.
    I try to be careful and make sure I'm not damaging anything when using controllers but this always happens and I've come to think dualshock 4s are just really poorly made. I've never had any issue like this with any other controller I was hoping there was some fix for it that I wasn't aware of.

    As someone who has every Xbox and Playstation (besides Ps5), this is why I prefer using rechargeable AA batteries in an Xbox controller. AA batteries last longer, I'm back to full charge in 20 seconds, and it only costs like $20 for like 3 years of batteries. Wish Playstation would go to batteries. Even when the battery pack stuck out on the 360 it still didn't get in the way either.

    I’ve used my vita charger (5 Volt 1.5 Amp output) for years. I’ve yet to suffer any damage as a result. The key is not to use a quick charge cable. Hell most electronics recommend not using them period due to risk of overcharge and overloading thanks to output exceeding tolerances.

  • @Atlink
    @Atlink 3 роки тому

    As someone who is an electrician, this is not very good advice. It's not BAD, but it's kind of misleading. Wall chargers are listed with their maximum output. This shows how much the charger CAN output, not how much it WILL output. The circuitry within the controller (or other USB device) will only allow the current it is rated for to flow through.
    Think of it like this: Not everything in your house uses 110v AC (in the US), but all of the outlets supply it. This is because the individual devices will only output a certain amount.
    The input voltage/amperage on the battery is what is allowed, but if you were to plug these batteries in DIRECTLY to the power source (let's say a 2 amp charger), you could potentially fry the battery almost instantly. Most Lithium batteries have a minimal amount of circuitry that will allow only so much current to be applied to the battery, and I'm not 100% certain whether this is in the battery itself, or within the controller (for safety reasons, it's likely in the battery).
    If the battery only accepts 1A of current, it will only take 1A of current.
    But why does my controller charge faster with a 2A charger, and not a 1A charger? Depends. Are you using your controller? You're leeching power that could be used for charging. On top of that, no battery charges at 100% efficiency, nor do all outputs on USB chargers. Typically, you'll get about 800mA on a 1A charger, and probably 1800mA on a 2A charger.
    The biggest thing - don't use crappy chargers. Ones from Samsung, or other reputable brands will work just fine. If the charger cost you 10 cents, stay away.

      I do as well, for the last 5 years and never had a problem. Chargers and device that accept charge have a way of communicating, the charger can charge at higher output, but the device/controller tells it what is the maximum charge it can accept. I have a USB power meter and have checked this. There's a board on devices that is intelligent to ensure that over the limit current does not go in

      Well, you can actually charge with anything you have, the problem is that the battery damages faster. I have a controller that I bought with a PS4 Pro last year and this one I used a Samsung charger, the battery life is like half now. The one that came with the PS4 doesn’t have that issue since I always charged it with the PS4.

    There should be a protection or regulation board inside the shell of those lithium batteries that prevent over charging and under charging. In other words, you can't overcharge them. However, this does not mean you can't get a battery with a poorly manufactured board or just a bad battery. We are talking about Sony, after all.

    Voltage is the only thing that matters, as that is what is pushed to a device from the power source. Amperage is pulled from the device. So as long as the charger is 5v, any amperage will work. A 500mA charger will only supply half the charge rate and a 2A charger will only supply 1A, as that is what the DS4 controller will ask for. I don't know what the controller consumes, but let's say it draws 500mA while in use, a 500mA charger will only maintain the current charge and only continue to fill the battery when the device is off.
    Other than that, any charger can have a surge during an anomaly such as a lightning storm power outage, if using a cheaply made charger or even a badly wired home; too many things to cover that can go wrong. Buy quality products and use surge protectors and you've minimized the risks.
    I go one further and keep most devices on UPS battery backup.
