Hat tip to the late Jason Miller for his acting in this movie. Through the whole movie, he carries the pain, guilt, and anguish on his face over his mother's death. Very convincingly, I might add!

it's the only movie I won't watch alone, it's different from scary movies, when you watch it..it feels like you might manifest something, there's few horror films that are made with actual quality and effort and they still aren't at this level, only The Shining comes close in terms of quality imo, this film basically made a list of everything horrifying and did it, even the medical procedure is scary, haha, I think it even took 4 people to play the little girl, it's really an achievement

The story is based on a case of exorcism involving a young boy that author William Peter Blatty heard about in 1949. Originally he wanted to do a case study of that event, but after speaking with some of the people involved, they wanted to protect the family. So, Blatty changed his directon and wrote a fictional story about the possession and exorcism of a child and he changed it from a young boy to a girl.
The story is actually about Father Karras. He's a guilt ridden priest who's doughting his faith, but then he's presented with something he can't explain. In the end he commits the ultimate act of love by sacrificing his life for someone he never met. Remember, he never met Reagan, only the demon.

Father Karras willingly jumped out the window, to protect Regan. If you rewatch the scene when the demon "takes" Karras, Karras (while possessed by the demon) tries to strangle Regan and we see Karras internally fighting the demon. Karras knew the demon would be too strong to not push him to strangle Regan, so Karras sacrificed himself to save her.

Ellen Burstyn tells a great story about this. The following year, she was in Arizona filming "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," and she and some of the other cast and crew decided to go see "The Exorcist" one night to unwind (!). A lady in the audience became overwhelmed and passed out, and several people gathered around her to try to help her -- including Ellen, at first, until it dawned on her that maybe this poor woman probably didn't want to come to and see a member of the "Exorcist" cast in the flesh right away! So she withdrew. (Might've been even worse if it had been Max Von Sydow, I suppose.)

@Miles Doyle wow!!! i took my time and read it all!! ''Marian typing btw''
before I was... well I think I was.. an atheist.. but many questions couldn't be answered by science alone... an example is how a kid who is just 3 years old, falls form a 8th floor building on his belly and gets up few seconds later without a single scratch? based on science this should been very simple.. calculating the weight, the speed.. and the distance? u guess.. he will be close to a human pie or pizza.. but no... he defy laws of physics bcuz probably those laws are just theories that we still try to prove.. but God who made this world, knows when is our time and when is not.. secondly I read about this amazing soldier who saved a lot of Americans in WWII.. in Japan's war Doss or so was his name.. he saved around 70 soldiers in one night.. but bcuz he gave an oath to not bear arms of any sort.. cuz he was a medic.. he even went to court for that matter, but I will make this story short.. he saved a lot of people that one night, after a failed attempt to assault Japan's beach on top of a hill.. and the next day too.. there is soldiers who confess saying ''by mistake he was running in front of us while shooting, our guns will click and crack and stop shooting.. something or someone wouldn't allow him to die'' you see he was a 7th day adventist.. who kept even the Sabbath Holy.. he always kept his bible and praying.. God wouldn't allow him to die!! and he dies at almost 90 years or so.. if I am not mistaken..
so after seeing all of those stories.. and I struggle with my life and my dark thoughts..at some point in my life I wanted to kill myself.. but a very low silent voice.. but with a strong vibe said ''come to me, is time to surrender'' and I believe it from the deepest parts of my very soul.. it was Jesus... i cried out loud and beg him to show me what to do.. and he did.. in fact this very UA-cam that we started me and Joy is bcuz of that.. bcuz we almost fall apart.. and divorced.. but now we are working on this together and God blessed us beyond measure.. i will always honor his name.. i will believe in his son's sacrifice and I know now.. that everything in this world is no such thing as ''random'' everything has a purpose.. and at the end those who denied Jesus before men, he will deny them before the Father Matthew 10:33

Fun fact: the medical center scenes were filmed in Bellevue New York City and the staff were actual medical staff members. The guy who inserts the needle into her neck in the movie, in real life went on to become a serial killer who was eventually arrested and convicted for his crimes.
Also, the real boy who this was based on is still alive and well, and living a possession free life in Maryland. The exorcism took months to successfully complete and took place in two different states. They had to start all over with a new priest doing the exorcism as the first priest was severely injured when the boy took a piece of metal from one of his beds and injured the priest. He required many stitches to close up a wound he received from the boy.

The director of this movie - William Friedkin - is a very talented filmmaker. He wanted to make the scariest movie ever, so he combined three things: 1. A truthful, natural style, almost like he was making a documentary; 2. The best technology available at the time - sound, film editing, lighting, set design, makeup, etc.; and 3. a knowledge of psychology that he could use to terrify both his actors and his audience. This film is a masterclass in psychological manipulation. Every possible method was used to keep the viewer nervous, but the most intelligent decision was to show the end of the story from the young priest's perspective, because he can't decide if what he's seeing is real.

Second, when you do find them, they first send you to a psychiatrist. Meanwhile strange stuff keeps on happening in the house, it terrorizes you. You have to wait, with that entity in the house. In my case, the help never came and my family was torn apart. This wouldn’t have happened if more priests were willing to be exorcists. There are just not enough exorcists in the western world.

YES! This movie was based on a true case of a 14 year old boy.
The whole reason why the demon possessed Regan is 1-She didn't have any beliefs in God or Satan. I have read that the most susceptible people to be possessed are non-believers. 2-The demon's ultimate goal was to get the soul of Father Karas because his faith became weak and to possess a priest's soul is a GREAT PRIZE for demons because priest are anointed men of God. And the demon DOES admit his ultimate goal when Father Karas makes his second visit and the demon says it would bring them closer and Father Karas asked Regan and you? and the demon replied "YOU AND US"!!! At the end the demon succeeded but Father Karas was smarter than the demon and sacrificed his life for Regan and sacrificing your life for someone else is the greatest gift of all.

This film was also nominated in nearly every major category for Academy awards - it won only 2 - for best sound and best screenplay - it lost best film to "The Sting" - which is a fine film - but really can't match the cultural impact and lasting legacy enjoyed by; "The Exorcist".

We saw Karras fight and take back his identity before he crashed through the window to his death, taking the demon with him. I have one criticism of the scene, that it was WAY too short. First and foremost William Friedkin's steadfast direction truly grips you from the get go building slow tension burns and fantastic acting all around (Linda Blair so s/gotten the Oscar for this). Compelling and based in reality is what makes it truly terrifying. Kudos to the iconic make-up artist Dick Smith's amazing make-up effects (sadly long before his category could even get an Oscar nomination!) Great reactions and nice that you caught Lee J. Cobb from 12 ANGRY MEN as the police detective (sadly this was his final film). I was lucky enough to meet Friedkin a few yrs. back and he was very nice and thoughtful. 📽The great thing about Friedkin's style/ ability was his 'steadfast' mindset on realism. The major fault of nearly every horror film, dare I say, every film of today. I mean, pound for pound, ...directors, writers, actors, score, film-editing and the birth of so many of today's categories due to the incredible/monumental innovations in the "arts & sciences". And your right, his gritty realism of "The French Connection" '71, was the same feel as "The Exorcist", disguised as a horror film.
📽How/Why did H'Wood ever forget that treating any genre, within the context of true-reality is what makes or breaks a film. That's why The Excorcist worked ...it felt real. Respect to the premise, story, characters, etc... Forget that it's horror, imagine what you do as being no different than The French Connection, an actual true subject. Hackman killed it and by the way, so did Jane Fonda that same year for "Klute". To this day, for me, the best-true honorings for best Actor/Actress ever. If you haven't seen Klute, Donald Sutherland being the movies namesake, put it on your immediate list.
📽Not a criticism, just a correction, ...Tatum O'neal won for best Supporting-Actress for '73 over Linda Blair. For years my brother and I thought it was a travesty how she beat out Blair. We thought it was because she starred with her father (Ryan) ...but then we saw "Paper Moon", by Peter Bogdanovich, another great of the time. As soon as the movies finished, my brother and I looked at one another and said ..."Ohhh, I get it now ...there was never a contest!"😲😏
📽That l'il girl stole that whole film from what was supposed to be her father's. If I understand correctly, he was even jealous of his own daughters fame overshadowing him. But he was a nasty, egotistical little fart in the first place. Bogdanovich had a particular fondness for B&W, in which the movie was filmed. All I can say is, just like the 70's, another great movie...
...and that goddam l'il girl kicked some f**kin' "A"!🏃🏼‍♀🤸🏼‍♀🏆

The demon was voiced by an actress from my hometown, Mercedes McCambridge. She had recently gotten sober but for this role she drank whiskey, gargled with raw eggs, and did much more to provide the incredible vocals, which to me are the scariest thing in the film. She was also very religious, so it couldn't have been easy for her to play the role. When Regan kisses the priest at the end, I think some part of her knows that a priest saved her and she is thanking him.

To this day this movie scares me because as a believer it’s way scarier than a guy with a knife. I’m sure you’ll hear it from other comments, but it IS based on a true story but it happened to a boy in the 50’s. Also, the other one in this lane that you have to see is The Omen. Then watch one of stories about all the horrifying things that happened while they were filming The Omen. It scared the sh*t out of me. There’s a newer and the original from the 70’s but all that bad stuff happened to the original which stars the dad from To Kill a Mockingbird! Also, (just saw you mention it) Silent Hill was scary too!

If you're curious about father Merrin, remember how the two priest decided on Lankester Merrin because of his experience and the one priest said that it almost killed him. There's a movie about his first encounter with this demon, I believe it's called "The Exorcist Origins". There's of course "The Exorcist 3", it picks up, I think 5 years later and there's someone masquerading as a serial killer who's been dead for the same amount of years. George C. Scott plays the part of the detective from the first movie and he finds himself in some deep s**t, when he finds out what really happened to his friend Damien Karras.

As far as I know, William Peter Blatty (who wrote the script, based on his own novel) was inspired by a case that happened in the 1960s of a boy who supposed to be possessed by a demon. He also wrote and directed the incredible and very scary ''The Exorcist III'' (just skip Part 2, because it is just horrible). Btw, ''The Exorcism of Emily Rose'' (2005) is based on a true exorcism case of Anneliese Miche in Germany, in the 1970s, it was a year later made in a more realistic way as ''Requiem'' (2006), which imo is an excellent movie. Greetings from The Netherlands.

Interesting fact, the demon statue at the beginning of the movie is called Pazuzu.
He was actually a good luck demon in some cases.
His scary visage was used to ward off the evil child snatching goddess Lamashtu during and after childbirth.
He also snapped the wings of the Lilû to stop them bringing an evil wind.
Having said that, he also brought the southwest winds to make famine...
    Sumerian mythology is really interesting.
And the Exorcist is still the scariest movie of all time! 😱😱😱

To be fair, the crucifix scene, while disturbing, was necessary to advance the story. Remember that up to this point, Chris as an atheist, and even after the mental health and medical communities advised that she seek a religious solution to Regan's "issue" she wasn't considering it. It took something so horrible and revolting to shake her world view and make her seriously consider religion. You should check out THE EXORCIST III to see what happens to Karris ... this wasn't the end of his story.

This is the movie that, along with Rosemary's Baby, redefined the horror genre by ignorjng all the usual tropes, like scary music, jump scares, darkness, the night, and scary weird people.
Most of The Exorcist takes place in daytime, with no music, and no jump, scares. The scariest thing for most of the movie is the spinal tap and the other medical procedures.
But when it went into overdrive, it did not hold back. A 12 year old girl masturbating with a cross? Don't see THAT every day. And you won't. For all the talk that this movie is dated, show me the underage sexual horror in another movie. You can't.

    Two things…
    First thing:
There is a actually two different movies that claim to be prequels to the this movie both being filmed at the exact same time with the same actors. It’s just two different directors and cuts called ‘Exorcist: the beginning’ (2004) and ‘Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist’ (2005). Almost like the same kind of thing that happened with the two Justice league films. Both of the films are similar but tell very different stories. Both are focused on the old priest when he was a younger man and the first time he faced the demon. Explaining why the demon was afraid of him in this film.
    Second thing:
Funny that you mentioned watching Silent Hill, I actually live very close to the town that inspired the Silent Hill video game/movie. It is a town in central Pennsylvania named Centralia. It is a place where there is a mine fire burning underground and it has been burning since 1962. The place is a creepy ghost town now where all the houses are just gone now and there is cracks in the roads where the smoke of the fire is just pluming out of the ground. Up until just a few years ago it was a popular place to visit because of the closed and abandoned highway that visitor graffitied all over. Appropriately nicknamed graffiti highway. But a few years ago the state buried the highway to try to discourage visitors because the whole town and old highway are extremely dangerous and could collapse into the ground at any time from the fire. If you visit on a cold foggy day it is almost exactly the same vibe as Silent Hill.
