      You didn't get the point, did you? Dresses can be beautiful, but they are just clothes and people can choose which clothes they want to put on their body. There was a time when women were not "allowed" as the commenter said, to wear pants. They were FORCED to wear dresses and only dresses. So it's not sad that she chose to never wear a dress again, once she was given the freedom to wear what she wanted. It's liberating.@@nathanstein589

    I need to know if she gave her the charm or the bracelet. A charm like that, at fair trade gold prices could be 350 for the probably 8 grams of gold inside of it. This is ABSOLUTELY a reasonable price to pay for fair trade clothing. The cost of the fabric and the labor alone, not to mention the increased time for production if using older machinery. Hand sewn? Beautifully written story.

    Growing up I was forced to wear skirts & dress for religious reasons. I remember begging over & over for years to wear pants. I still remember the first pair I got. And later I was able to convince my mom to wear pants. I don't wear dress anymore but she will on special occasions but she says she'll never go back to how it was before. Being restricted on movement and what you could do. 💜

    My mother was born in 1960. When she was a kid living in Indiana and going to a school with school uniforms, they made her go to school in a skirt in the snow. She says that she remembers the year that they allowed her to wear pants to school and how happy she was because she wasn’t cold anymore. Women wearing pants is relatively new and people should be aware of that fact and hope that women can continue to wear what they want in the future.

    I 100% believe that women in the past had “fainting spells” due to heat exhaustion, having to be as covered as they did. I get overheated even in shorts and t shirt 😮‍💨

    • @dizzysinclaire6795
      @dizzysinclaire6795 Місяць тому +8

      It's actually not as hot as you'd think. The clothes back then were made of much more breathable fabric and they had all sorts of different ways to make an outfit less insulating in the heat! The fact that linen is no longer widely available and cheap is a crime agaisnt humanity, truly. Plus like, you'd definitely be used to layering up like that

    • @jst2708
      @jst2708 Місяць тому +3

      1 reason that women😊 fainted was because their corset was so tight it cut off their air & restricted their organs from growing

    • @ashleighlewis8938
      @ashleighlewis8938 Місяць тому +9

      It was quite a few reasons actually! Heat exhaustion did play a part in some cases, but not as common as you’d think. For summer, they made clothes out of lighter fabrics to avoid overheating. Corsets are another well known culprit, but actually most women didn’t tightlace their corsets. A corset to them would have felt like a bra to us. Slightly uncomfortable yes, but definitely not enough to cause medical issues, and it provided support for their bust and helped them to stand up straight. One reason a lot of women fainted was just malnutrition. Before enriched flour was available, malnutrition was a huge problem, for men and for women. A lot of women were also anemic, so they had a lot working against them. It’s something we don’t think about a lot anymore, because in the Western world we have much better access now to nutrient rich food.

    • @irishime
