- Here I spoke with Viorica Marian, Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University, and is the Principal Investigator of the Northwestern Bilingualism and Psycholinguistics Research Laboratory. Most recenetly Prof Marian published her excellent book “The power of language” which i read earlier this year that discusses how languages change the way we percieve the world as well as the benefits of bilingualism. I wonder if multilingual people are more likely to tolerate mental effort at a deficit. This could just be rephrasing the compensation hypothesis. Its certainly true that speaking several languages can make word recall fluency slightly more effortful even in ones first language. Fun stuff!

Thanks for asking the reason why Sheeky, the compensation hypothesis does make sense 🤔 if increasing the cognitive effort/load to the brain is what truly prevents it, theoretically other cognitive complex tasks also should help, e.g. playing instruments with proficiency 🎸 , doing advanced math 🤓, memorising difficult words, etc.

I am fluent in English, Japanese and Arabic. Everyone around me says that I am good at making decisions. Maybe now I understand why.
It would be interesting to know is there a difference in people who can sing several languages but are not fluent in those same languages. In other words they can't carry on a conversation in the particular language they can sing.
Mimicking sounds requires much less cognitive effort: you can learn how to sing a foreign language song without knowing any of its words meaning. If you do learn them, then you you are making progress in learning the language.
