I am currently making myself a "58" Korina one.. my daughter is actually wanting a V so I am doing both at the same time but hers will be a surprise for her birthday. Love these guitars.
@@mikeblack73 Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼! That is really cool! It truly is fantastic time together. My daughter has a pink and black Firebird style that she and I built together. That was her first one.
@@donbishop6994 I certainly think there could be people who know more… But he has such an encyclopedic knowledge of all the models and variations and special additions and words and stuff… It’s really amazing how they’re all organized in his mind. And then he does a very very good job with his editor of splicing in all of those images and references.
I'm amazed that those non-potted pickups didn't totally squeal into Infinity when the dirt was kicked on. It's great that the distortion did bring out the flavor in them. Seriously, what does the korina wood do for the Explorer beyond cosmetics? Is it about something other than heritage, since that was what was used when the bodyshape was introduced in 1958? How does the sound honestly compare with the mahogany this model was built from?
I can't stand those plastic Kluson tuners... it cheapens the overall look of the guitar. I've been calling them "Bum's Teeth" ever since I saw somebody say that online. 😅
@@markcheetah4960 LOL. I like the shape, tulip/keystone, whatever, but, like you, the green plastic gets me as well. My LPJ came with chrome Kluson type tuners with black plastic knobs, replaced the with HipShot and swapped the buttons for black kidney-bean shaped (like Grovers) ones.
Because I like to sometimes roll off some tone for one pickup but not the other, i prefer tone controls for each pickup, so if a guitar has three knobs I would prefer a master volume/tone/tone set up. It makes me wonder how easy it would be for mento get used to master tone (Although I have a Mustang with master volume/master tone, I almost always use both pickups together and the phase options help me work around that-and it’s also singlecoil vs humbucker)
I know of a 1963 korina with a factory fitted bigsby and a custom made badge were the bridge poles would be.I had the honor of doing the set up and intonation on that Beaty and I really can’t think of a better crafted instrument of that model and lve handled all of the runs they made over the years and that 63 with the bigsby was the best
I have a feeling Gibson said something, but I found out a while ago that Reverend made a slightly asymmetrical Flying V called the Volcano. And of course Reverend uses Korina for everything, AND they had a natural finish option. (No pointed headstock, just their usual 3x3 headstock shape) So an almost Flying V in Korina with a natural finish. Yeah, I think Gibson said something.
I’ve got a 2011 dark cherry Explorer. I love the neck. But the pick ups (not sure what they are, I think they are original, but with no covers). The pick ups just don’t do the guitar justice. I’d love to get some more powerful pickups for dirt, but also clean sounding (my current pick ups are really muddy). Any recommendations on a pick up up grade for my explorer?
Speaking of pickups being potted. Are tar backs done the way they are for the same reason as the wax potted pickups? Every time I hear Foreigner's Hot Blooded it reminds me of the summer the song was released. I was 16 and ended up in the hospital with you guessed it 103° fever. Went home after 5 days but it ruined my summer because it was another two weeks o could not go anywhere. I could not get out the house except to go to the doctor. I finally was released from this as school was getting ready to start up again.
Salutations Austin! Beautiful Explorer! I was really surprised to hear that it is a one piece body, that is exceptionally rare on such a large guitar. I think the wood grain is particularly attractive too. It sounds good, especially with some overdrive. I think that Gibson is kind of overdoing prematurely aging many of their guitars, and after purchasing an Explorer for $5000 dollars, I would prefer that it looks brand new, if they want to make them more affordable, they could just offer them with the satin finish, which could be polished to look nice and new. I believe that most people tend to treat guitars that look new, more carefully. I guess it wouldn’t take too much effort to have the pickup covers re-plated and polished to look just like brand new, as well as the stop bar and possibly the bridge too, but the bridge didn’t look worn. I really like the whole instrument, the walnut finish is just a little bit different than a lot of other Explorers. That green and red one was nice a while back, also. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
I have an Exployer Bass in Korina Epi Great bass, weight is not bad definitely lighter than my Gibson Thunderbird Total of neck going into body is 4 1/2 fretts , so the neck looks really long, but it is a 34 scale
There are also some more weird explorers like 2011 Melody Maker Explorer. They are maple body/mahogany neck. Kinda untypical wood combination for Gibson but fun guitars nontheless.
I have owned many of these... back in the day meaning late 80's early to mid 90's they were cheap but that being said they were always a sound of their own and a real joy to play....
I have a 76 Reissue from 2006 and I get fret buzz on the low E string at zero and first fret. Even with a relieved neck the problem still remains (maybe it’s less buzz but it’s still there). The string gauge is 0.11-0.56. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Find a good luthier NOT a guitar tech to adjust the neck and set up the guitar for you. It's worth the cost and your problems will fade away so you can truly love and enjoy your guitar. Good luck!
I really enjoy the videos about explorers although I don't own any Gibsons at the moment I have an epiphone v. I am a big time explorer guy it's probably because I'm a bigger guy kind of like James hetfield and I like guitars that are bigger and balance out. Would love to see you do some heavy metal pointy guitars a little more often. Maybe a Dean Razorback or a Dean z. Or any pointy style explorer type guitars. Very informative show. Thanks again
This is a nice looking exployer but for 5000 they can keep It! You can buy a nice new explorer in mahogany for 1600 bucks today and Korina one from epiphone for 1100 both in hard cases.
Exactly. I paid £1800 for my 2021 exp. Same wood, nickel hardware & mine has the strap button in the right place. What ever the differences are between that and a standard Gibson run model, they don't add up to an extra 3 grand.
Yeah Gibson are a luxury instruments made for doctors, dentists and lawyers…the average players isn’t gonna bring a 5000$ guitar to a gig so Gibson usually isn’t our best choice of guitars. I have a Godin radiator reissue (kind of a les Paul type guitar) I paid 1000$ Canadian for it and it has none of the quality check issues that Gibson have and better quality wood and made in Canada. Hell, even my Ibanez AR420 TBG is a better guitar than most Gibson’s and it’s made in China. Both guitars have better specs than most gibsons i see on this channel 😂
Sorry but there is no comparison. You get what you pay for. I have one of these, I also have a 92 explorer that is really good but it is nowhere near the custom shop. The 58 Gibson resonates and sings. The Epiphone is not the same in any way. I really wish it was because I would play one and save some money but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Ok so I always thought the Explorer was the coolest guitar, but as a 100%disabled vet, I make about as much as a fast food shift manager. Any suggestions on a way to find good and still affordable to someone without that crazy money.
@Jordan Pratt so about 8 months or so of saving up, not bad, way better than 20 years lol. Personally I think the VA aught to issue instruments to anyone that they classify PTSD, damn thing really helps, makes you crazy in a good way haha.
I am disabled too , but I got a Epi Exployer bass in Korina for not much with a case , somebody bought it and returned it looks like it was never even touched. I noticed prices went up after I had it a little while . M.S. is what disabled me at early 30s Guitar playing went out the window with left hand fingers, hate guitar strings but bass strings are A ok

This the only modern reissue that sounds as it should. PERFECT tones. You really should keep this one, you will appreciate the tonalities of this guitar as you playing abilities progress.
Wow, the drastic differences in the color of the multiple pieces of wood is "shocking"! When it's a Gibson, it's normal, and to be expected. If it was an Epiphone, then it would be expected, and that's why you pay more for a Gibson? Hilarious.
Great looking guitar! Although I prefer the color of Korina or classic white this one still looks pretty darn good. Love the looks of those Kluson tuners on it too!
