    📚 Description: In late 2021, Gibson released a collector's edition of Korina Flying Vs and Explorers that used scans from the originals to create them like they've never been reissued before. The Murphy Labs division aged them and they used Brazilian Rosewood fretboards. Set to be collector's items from day one - the Flying Vs retailed at $20,000 with only 81 made which only lasted in stores for one week. The Explorers - were limited to only 19 in production and had a suggested price of $30,000. None of them were ever listed for public sale though. You would have to be one of the lucky few who called the Gibson Garage to secure one - or have an "in" with a dealer that decided not to keep theirs or be a Gibson endorsed Artist. I was lucky to get one of these for review and demo! Please enjoy this video on the 2021 Gibson Collector's Edition Murphy Labs Aged 1958 Replica Korina Explorer with Brazilian Rosewood fretboard review and demo video!

    I understand relicing as an aesthetic choice and I fully support it as a playing comfort choice (sanded necks are amazing) but trying to retroactively place a guitar into history just so collectors can blow their load pretending they have the real thing, is kinda pathetic honestly. This run would have been cooler as a complete reissue run, make them like they would have looked back in '58

      Totally agree! All this artificial aging.. I don't get it...Too much money is asked for this aspect of a guitar and it adds nothing to the sound. Leave it new and spent money and time on the PU's for example or something else that can be heard when the guitar is played.
      But that's the whole thing, isn't it? These guitars are not meant to be played, just to be kept as an investment so the sound and finish is basically irrelevant..
      Not sure whether Austin is 100% behind this guitar, I hear some disappointment every now and then.. and rightfully so...

      I don't have a C+C machine. I could do a better job by hand, and I am... let's put it generously... a fast improving novice. There are luthiers and woodworkers around the world that can hand craft things to within millimeter tolerances, and you would think for over $10,000 a pop, Gibson would be able to hire some of those people to make flawless instruments. Were the originals flawless? By no means, absolutely not, but something like this would have been considered a minor defect even in the 50s. However, these guitars are worth a staggering amount of money compared to the inflation adjusted original prices, and as such, should be a reproduction of the IDEAL 59 explorer, not some could-have-been-B-stock one. The only reason they're valuable is the limited edition rarity/novelty factor and the name brand, and in that sense, Gibson really is becoming the Supreme of boomer guitarists.

    It's cool that they come with a cover to protect the case that's for protecting the guitar, but how are you supposed to protect the cover that protects the case that protects the guitar? For that kind of money I think they ought to solve this very important problem.

    One possible but trivial reason I can speculate as to why Gibson used both black pick guards originally (& didn't include both for the Explorer) is maybe bc they thought if they did em in white, they'd have to match the anti-slip leg rest on the treble side of the V as well & if that were white it may get dirtier more quickly compared to a black version of it. Just a thought

    • @av.punk.801
      @av.punk.801 2 роки тому +2

      IIRC, even on the original (like ORIGINAL original) white guard ones, the leg strip was still black. I think its because there were SO many players on the OG V that swapped for a blackguard, whereas the most notable players of Explorers (The Edge comes to mind) tend to keep em white. Marketing above all. Just speculation though

    Re: Control Cavity Cover fit ... Gibson could have made a template for the cover that fit tightly in to the routed ledge surrounding the cavity, but remember they were trying to minimize small, inconsequential handwork items, so making the cover slightly smaller than the rout eliminated any potential fit issues and allowed them to quickly install the cover without any handwork involved. Just one small thing that they did to boost productivity and control production costs.

    Congratulations trogly. It's really great when people are so happy to get something and you got it lol. I hope that you enjoy it and it gives you great joy apparently it does and that's really great good for you bro. I wonder if they would make that guitar you know the way it came out new and 57. New one and that's how you got it. I think that would be pretty cool too. But seeing how I'm like Mr Magoo on steroids and I'm virtually blind severely legally blind I couldn't tell the difference anyway. Well that's not true I suppose I could tell you know how shiny something is and I can have my fingertips to feel things so I tell that way but yeah really great man explorer is probably one of the next guitars I get after the Epiphone 59 limited edition Les Paul and then I'm probably going to hopefully if things work out all right in the near future buy a used Gibson explorer. My favorite guitar was always the firebird and I achieved that in 2017 and it's still one of my favorite guitars. Is it one of my best playing guitars no actually probably the cheapest guitar around is probably one of my best playing guitars. And that's an old electromatic ratchet 5435 project. It's free the 2016 and 17 upgrade where they change the correct logo and put on the metal tips and all that I'm sorry the metal knobs and made it more a period correct. But yeah I'm not going to go at the phone on my explorer when I get it. It'll most likely have to be a used one. And I've come off my crazy high horse worrying about what condition a paint job is on the guitar because I can't tell the difference anyway lol crazy right a blind guy worrying about how shiny and perfect to finish on a guitarist. I suppose if it's a collection or collectible that would be an issue but otherwise it's just something that goes through my head or went through my head that I finally realize that what am I what am I doing I can't see it anyway LOL anyway enjoy probably considered us Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

    Even with the kind of rough recording tone you can tell the guitar has got a great sound. Body relic looks pretty great, but typical with all of the other Murphy Lab stuff including the heavy aged R0 I recently reviewed they only half do the hardware. Jack screws looked shiny, switch looks shiny, thumbwheels look Shiney, etc. At least they aged the strap buttons, regular Murphy Lab's don't get that. The pickup aging looks quite bad and the tail piece aging looks real bad. Tuners actually look pretty good, and the checking seems a little overly spiderweb-y but not too bad. That back plate routing is insanely bad though, no doubt they messed up but didn't have enough korina blanks that size to redo it so they just hoped the owner wouldn't care.

    Great review! I'm trying to decide on taking the leap into either a '58 Korina Flying V or Explorer Reissue. Between this Explorer review and your review of the Flying V, it's really not making my decision any easier. I love them both. Many years ago I had an Ibanez Destroyer 2 which between it and my Ibanez Lawsuit LP were my 2 main gigging guitars in the 80's. Sold the Destroyer and still have the LP. Any way, I know how well-balanced an explorer-shaped guitar can be and being a LP-guy, the Explorer-style is more similar to a LP than is a V. I had also heard that Explorers generally tend to be bigger and thicker-sounding than Flying V's, i.e. more like a LP and Flying V's have a hybrid LP/SG/Strat-like quality. What do you think?
