This is the sister video to our video to "The Flying V: A Short History". The great story of the Explorer is driven by how very few were made back in the '50's.
First and foremost, I need to thank Dave Rogers from Dave's Guitars. Dave owns an original 1959 Explorer, one of only three guitars built that year. He sent me endless pictures of that amazing guitar and he quite literally made this video possible as images, particularly detailed images of original Explorers, are almost more rare than the guitars themselves.
I also need to specifically thank Dave's photographer, Tim Mullally, who worked with me to grab images of the key features of the guitar. Everyone at Dave's was incredibly helpful. It's funny, but the week prior to calling Dave I'd bought a left over PRS Mira S2 Semi-hollow from the shop online. Beautiful photography and amazing customer service. Clearly I owe a debt of gratitude to Phil Jones, who shared with me his knowledge of the "Korina guitars". I met Phil through the owner of the V prototype from that video and so now I owe that guy twice as well. Phil has been a tremendous source of information and has proven to be a great editor as well (my bad spelling is always a problem.). And on top of all that, he's a very funny guy.
As always I need to thank the real experts that wrote the books I used in my research. Tony Bacon at the front of that list with his book, "Flying V, Explorer, Firebird". I highly recommend everything Tony's written.

I agree, im a rythm gutiarist myself. I had my LTD Snakebyte at the shop for repair and maintence... Played on a Strat and SG while waiting was absolutely horrible, it was like i started guitar all over again.

I've been buying Epiphones for years as an economical necessity alternative to the Gibsons I love. I own no Gibsons but have 5 Epis: an SG Junior, a G-400 SG Standard w/smaller pickguard, an LP Junior 'baccy burst, an almost new LP Special I in TV yellow, and a G-300 Strat style w/hockey stick headstock in surf green. Paid around $100 for each except the (lefty) G-400 which cost $364 new. Maybe someday I can sell them all and buy a yacht.
The Strat style Epi w/hockey stick headstock is actually called an S-300, not G-300. 3 single coil pups, 5-way switch, whammy bar, and Strat-esque body. Love the surf green finish. Got it used for $120.
I'm why James plays an Explorer, he has my old 76 Explorer I lent him to play our first gig at the Whiskey a-go-go just after I left the band, haven't seen it since.
A high school friend who learned guitar with me recently passed. His wife wanted me to have his guitar. Just got it yesterday. An '84 Explorer - the same year we started playing together.

I got a Hamer Explorer about 18 years ago. It was originally selling for $1000, but it fell off the wall of the store and the top wing broke off. It was a clean break, right along the seam. The repair guy fixed it, and they cut the price in half. It sat in the shop like that for almost a year. Since it wasn't selling, they cut the price in half again and I picked it up for $250.
The best deal You ever made. Maybe the best explorers came out of Hamer 👍
The hamer is called a blitz. Did it have a kahler tremolo?. Chicago hamer's are very good guitars.

Both the explorer and Flying V back to back? It’s a dream come true. The only Explorer I have is the one my grandad and I built. It’s made out if black limba and has a 25.5 inch scale length. It’s more pointy than a normal explorer so we called it the voyager. Unfortunately Grandad passed away before we could finish it so my dad and I finished it in his honour. After his death my dad and I realized he had been working on it while we weren’t there and he accidentally cut himself while chiseling our the control cavity. My dad varnished over the blood so that grandad would always be with the guitar. It has a strange energy as a result.

@@creamydistortion Nobody in Megadeth plays a strat. Kirk Hammett from Metallica does play one from time to time, but it's made by ESP. Yngwie is a strat guy, but he's more of a shredder.
Now, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith form iron Maiden are strat guys all the way.
Honestly, if you put a humbucker in a strat, it plays any metal just fine.
They don't balance too well, though.
I’ve only played an actual Gibson explorer once, but it’s unforgettable. The guitar itself makes such a big sound it almost feels like it doesn’t need an amplifier. And the way you can get such raw, gritty metal tones all the way to clean straty like tones is such an experience. The guitar deserves more recognition.

Well done. Glad you Included Allen Collins, he is who I associate an explorer with the most........nothing more iconic than seeing him RIP the freebird solo on his explorer.
I think I agree with you, though when I think of him, I tend to think of his four Firebirds. He played it much longer than he did the Explorer. And he had an original Korina Explorer he got from Clapton, although there are those who dispute whether he really got it from Eric. Plus, he still carried his 4th Firebird on the road as his backup guitar, after he got his Explorer. Other people may think of another guitarist when they think of Explorers. I was more into Skynyrd and southern rock than I was into metal, blues, jazz, or any other genre. I did see a fair number of Explorers being played by heavy metal guitarists, but I have think harder to come up with their names. That style was big in metal. Allen had all his Firebirds modified - his own, unique way. (Interesting to research!)
Mathias Jabs is a legend !! I've always loved his playing, unique sound and tones, epic memorable solos, extremely good technique, lightning fast , and tasty melodic player, one of my favourites.

The Snakebyte guitar is James Hetfield's signature guitar that was drawn and made to his specs and released in 2011 I believe.
The ESP EX series was their modified explorer ever since. Which features sharper angles.

He actually played the snakebyte back in November 2010 at the end of the World Magnetic tour. It was an early version of it with his new Hetset Pickups. :)
ESP was doing the sharper angles on the EX guitars in the late 90s. I remember seeing a black LTD EX hanging in a music store around ‘98.
Not sure exactly when ESP and Gibson came to the agreement, although there were a few of those black and white Explorer copies that made it into the States in the 90s-they go for stupid money now.

Wonder if we’ll get a short history of MusicMan instruments. The stingray bass is absolutely iconic and would be a perfect choice for an upcoming short history.
I don't think anyone could really argue that the P-Bass, J-Bass & then the Stingray have had the most significant influence on all other solid-body electric bass designs/concepts. The profound tonal impact on Western music of those 3 instruments is almost unbelievable - Leo? How did you know? 😂 & please feature the Bernard Edwards Stingray that was passed to John Taylor - that particular instrument & the influence of what was played on it, has shaped the low end groove of almost every bass-centric genre since.
I've loved the explorer ever since I was a little boy, even before I started playing. About three years ago I finally saved up enough to buy a 2017 model USA built Gibson Explorer in a transparent red finish, and to this day, every time I pull it out of the case, it feels just as special as the day I bought it.
I think I bought the same Axe but 2016 model. R496 & T500 pickups in red. From about 2017 Gibson murdered the design by adding auto tune and weird hardware. As an Edge fan since 1980 I promised myself if I could ever smoke my Yamaha I'd be worthy of an Explorer.
I'm still not worthy of it but the minute I played some early U2 Riffs suddenly I got the tone I couldn't get on my Yamaha.
Owning an Explorer, its like dating a Supermodel. Suddenly all my rock mates want to visit but only to get their hands on a legendary axe.

Being a metalhead, every time I say I want an Explorer people always assume it's because of James Hetfield. I love Metallica, but it's really my dad; he owns a Brendon Small Thunderhorse and I want always watch him playing it, and even before I played guitar I thought it was so cool to have such a commanding presence. The Explorer, along with the 67 Flying V, is an absolute classic monster of rock and metal
I bought a brand new Les Paul in 1982. $700. Played that thing for 25 years and everyone asked me if it was a relic but it was all me. I was done with it in 2006 and sold it. In 2008, I picked up an explorer. The white one with the ebony fingerboard. It's a big heavy chunk of mahogany like the Paul, thick Gibson sound like the Paul but has a more aggressive Edge to the sound. It's got a huge baseball bat neck which should bother me but on this guitar it doesn't. I bond with this Explorer more than I ever did the Les Paul. it's easier to play and solo on, and I can reach up to the 22nd fret whereas the Les Paul, you're pretty much done at the 15th fret. It definitely gives me more of what I always wanted out of the Les Paul.

The explorer is always special to me because of Frankie Sullivan from survivor. I remember seeing the music video for Eye of the Tiger and Frankie is playing his white explorer and it blew my mind.

Man, thanks for this and the V great documentary. Thanks for filling in the details of the history I've witnessed since the 70s when the Explorer first caught my eye. Very well done, sir.
A couple of extra notes. The original 1957 Futura prototype was sold to a blues guitarist in Austin,TX in 1959/60. He displayed it in his car’s rear window for a decade and then left it on his back porch until it was rediscovered in the mid 70’s. Gibson also produced at least 2 Explorer basses in the late 50’s. They were 30 1/2” scale and had the familiar Explorer headstock except instead of the tuners being 6 on a side they were 3+1
I must admit, in spite of playing guitar for almost 40 years, I have never played an Explorer. By any maker. Not because of a dislike for them, just never played one. Gonna have to try one if for no other reason than it would be kind of a shame not to. And at least that way I could try running the guitar strap over the body like Allen Collins played his, to see how much of a difference - if any - it makes in comfort, and ease of play.

Keith, thanks for making the history of these instruments so approachable for so many.
The Explorer was one of those left-field designs that fascinated me in the upper 90s as I was first learning how to play. Back then, I led by example, which was how my first electric guitar was a Stratocaster. Knowing that Eric Clapton, Alan Collins, Tommy Shaw, The Edge, the members of Metallica and Def Leppard, as well as others I admired had played an Explorer at one time or another definitely piqued my curiosity, even though I knew what an awkward beast it could be to carry around and hold. I can say that the Ibanez variation was the only model from that brand which tempted me, although the model I ended up getting at the end of 2008 was an Epiphone. One of the first things that I figured out was that you could play jazz and rockabilly licks on it, as well as the more customary hard rock with which the model is associated. Turned loose of it after less than four years (on July 14, 2012). I could get another, but it would have to be for more than the novelty of owning one like it was before.
That’s all good, Cyrus Freeman, but have you ever tried the Explorer’s fraternal triplet, the Flying V? I’ve only played that a couple of times myself, but it wasn’t half bad.

I'm a lot like you in that I wanted an Explorer when I saw James with one in the 90s. The difference is that I absolutely fell in love with it when I played one. I have, I think, 4 different models by different manufacturers right now and am always looking for another. I love the balance, the access and the feel it gives.
I will agree that it isn't for everyone, though.

It's crazy, but even though I've loved the Gibson Explorer for as long as I can remember, I've only played two of them once (I'm 52 years old). And the thing that struck me most when I played them was the fact that the big upper horn of the body resonates like crazy through your whole body, which makes it a unique experience because it's like you can feel its power running right through to you.
The other thing that blew my mind was the playability of the Explorer. I was sitting down when I played them. Both times. I never played one standing up. But sitting down the Explorer is one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played. It's ergonomically perfect. Having your right arm (if you're right handed off course) on that body, sitting on your lap, automatically angles the guitar in such a way that it makes everything seem to be precisely where it should be. Great access to the upper frets as well.
Since I lost a leg I'm forced to sit down during gigs. The Explorer could very well be my next guitar. I should have bought one 30 years ago anyway.
I'm not a huge Explorer fan so I thought I'd just watch a few minutes of this video. Twenty seven minutes later I'd have to say I'm a fan, really enjoy your stuff Keith, amazing amount of content in under 30 minutes. Good job........

I got two Explorer stories, so far:
1: My first good guitar was my 2008 "Faded" Explorer, in satin cherry. My grandfather bought it for me after he noticed I had been struggling with my unplayable Stratocaster copy. It was Guitar Center's Labor Day sale, and grandpa only paid about $699 for it brand new; the original price was $899 if I remember correctly. I wanted an Explorer because of The Edge; when I saw the _Beautiful Day_ video, I knew that was the guitar I had to have. "Cherry Sherry" (as I call her) became my main guitar with my high school band, alongside a black Les Paul Studio, and a black Fender Telecaster Deluxe Blackout, which has three pickups and a 5-way switch like a Strat. Sherry is all stock - though I plan to replace the nut soon; the old one has worn too deep after 12 years of playing - I still play her, and I plan to be buried with her.
2: Last summer (2019,) as my Gibson collection was really growing, I realized I had three Les Pauls and two Firebirds, but still only one Explorer (the aforementioned Cherry.) My local Guitar Center had a whole slew of used Gibsons come in from a fellow collector looking to clear house. This included two Explorer Pros from 2007, a black one, and a tobacco sunburst one. The Explorer Pro has a smaller body, no pickguard, and knobs that slat the opposite way of the standard Explorer. Guitar Center was asking $899 for each of them, and I was undecided on which one to take. I ultimately decided on the sunburst one because I thought it played better than the black one. The previous owner had replaced the pickups in it with two Dimarzio Super Distortions, so it’s a screamer, especially in the D standard I have it set up for. Both my Explorers are two shining examples in my collection, and I'll sure be looking for more.

It makes me smile to see several people in the comments naming The Edge as their Explorer incentive! :-)) Not long after I had started my very first own band in the late 80's, our guitarist bought a Hohner 'EX Devil' while I got myself a 2nd-hand Hamer 'Blitz' bass, both Explorer-shaped and also inspired by The Edge playing his during the tour of U2's 'War' album. Our visual impact was more that of ZZ Top though, just younger and without the beards x-))

My old band was more of a pop-punk band - think Sum 41 or Blink-182 - and we always covered U2's _I Will Follow, Out of Control,_ and _11 o' Clock Tick Tock._ I got so many compliments from upcoming guitarists about Cherry Sherry, asking me what kind of guitar it was. And during our one recording, a compilation of covers & three original songs - the engineer told me: "Son, I don’t know anything about guitars but I do know this: don’t ever sell that one; it's the best-sounding one I've heard in 20 years recording bands." Let's say I took his advice and I'll never get rid of Sherry. She's showing her age after 4 years onstage and 8 more in my house. The finish on the back of the neck is pretty much gone, there are some scratches on the headstock from my sloppy, teenage string changes, and a large gouge on the back of the body from when I hit it on the side of my guitar stand. It's amazing how characteristics like that become unique to your own guitar; they show it's *your* guitar.

My first experience with an Explorer was when guitar hero first came out, and one of the guitar-controller shapes was an arctic white Explorer. Ever since then I've been fascinated, and as a 9 year old I would draw the Explorer shape on guitar bags, notebooks, etc. When I got more serious about guitar at the age of 19, I was playing a show in Memphis and toured the gibson factory before it moved to Nashville. Among the 335's, the Explorer was what I was most intrigued by, and tried to convince my parents to buy it for me, to no avail. 3 years later, I found a 2016 black Explorer in a pawnshop outside Nashville. It haunted me for about a year, until I decided to go play it some more. I pestered the hell out of those pawn shop guys, but they enjoyed me coming in and playing it so often. Listed at $900, I scraped together every penny I had and grabbed anything I could sell. I came away that day with my first explorer for $700 out of pocket, and I have never looked back since.

Great video! Rick Nielsen was certainly one my first "Explorer exposures"......with his Hamer Standards and later seeing his real Explorers. I've loved the Explorer since 1976 or so when I first saw it as a 12 year old kid. Awesome guitars and quite balanced compared to Les Pauls or SG's!

I bought a used one of those in 74, then again another one 2 years ago. I really like them, the look, the sound. I have quite a number of guitars but I’ve just always enjoyed the look of those and the V. In general though the Strat, Les Paul and Tele are my go to thrash masters as the Explorer is heavy :). Luey Sixty-six - ya, the 2018 feels like strapping on a Buick. And a les Paul, to me, is more comfortable to play - keep in mind in 63 :)
Yeah, they are heavy but the beautiful sustain and fantastic tone are worth the struggle!
Deon Chase - agreed. They are wonderful guitars. On the last Blue Öyster Cult album (Curse of the Hidden mirror) I used a Tele with a humbucker in the bridge. On many commercials TV shows,commercials and a couple video games. I usually ended up using of all things a heavily modified Peavy T-60. It’s the heaviest guitar I have and I have quite a few. It has custom humbuckers with coil taps and sustains better than my Les Paul. Crazy piece of lumber 👍

Since you mentioned the Moderne, I wonder if that was aimed at younger players. For example, when i was a teenager, I LOVED the Moderne body shape. I HATED the headstock, which is ultimately why I never bought one. If it had the Explorer headstock, I probably would have jumped on it. Today? That is exactly the opposite of me, so I am glad I never bought one.

John Cougar He’s surely referring to a Gibson “reissue” or other copy, since there are no originals (beyond *maybe* a prototype or two). I have an Ibanez Futura copy of the Moderne from 1975. Cool guitar, plays & sounds really good, body made of a Japanese ash variant called sen, Guild style headstock.

I have an explorer and I was waiting for this video, thanks Keith! Something really unique of this guitar is how comfortable is to play while you’re sitting, also the tone is full and dark that you could get great jazzy tones from it.

Very interesting, nice to see the history on this. Just a word on the ESP model explorer it wasn’t the snakebite that replaced the ESP explorer, that’s a recent model made for Hetfield. Instead they just made changed the design slightly pointy explorer and called it an EX.

Since I started playing, I wanted an Explorer. Had one, but it had neck dive and was so big in comparison to my height so I hadn't really played it and sold it. Now I am playing Duo-Sonic, which is much more comfortable, lighter, and smaller. But still, when I go to sleep sometimes I dream of playing an Explorer in front of 500 000 Russians. It's the most badass shape ever produced. Gorgeous.
I fell victim to the timeless allure of the Explorer one random winter day in Sam Ash Music on 34th in NYC. I didn't walk in to shop guitars, but one of the Natural Cherry, 2014 120th anniversary models caught my eye & wouldn't let go. I had to give myself permission to buy that guitar. In my mind; the hair bands of the 80's had largely popularized those guitars (Def Leppard & The Scorpions being stand-outs), as I'd forgotten, the Edge, & Hetfield had played them too. As a virgin rocker still in jr. high, I loved the shape over any other, but somehow could never picture myself playing one as an adult. So over 50 years after the original release, some people (like me, & I'm a fairly liberal guy) still found the shape "racy". Any doubt evaporated the second the salesperson put that treasure in my hands; if you've never played an Explorer, the first time is one of the best. I, like most people, imagined the shape would be difficult to manage, & it turns out to be the complete opposite. The Explorer is hands-down the most balanced guitar shape I've ever experienced, & that goes for both standing & sitting. The second realization is the body thru vibration. It has a feel no other guitar has; as if all that balance, somehow convinces sound to leap from it's body. I'd passed the point of no return, & had to pull the trigger on that guitar.
It turns out that the 2014 anniversary model wasn't well received; not in my neck of the woods anyway. I purchased that Explorer in late 2015, & even for a couple hundred under the typical $1399. I would later discover that only 200 of the Natural Cherry, & 200 of the Natural Black models were made, a fairly limited release; further confusing me over the fair price I'd paid. Then I learned the model was becoming known for having a ridiculous amount of cosmetic problems; I could have just examined my own more closely. Multiple points of the cellulose finish had cracked away from the tuning pegs. At first I was pissed & wondered if I'd somehow, I'd overlooked the blemishes at purchase, but after a few weeks I could care less again. The guitar just sounds & plays that well. I couldn't stay mad at her. Despite all that, the model has increased in value over the few years, although I just saw one in "near mint" condition on Ebay for the base $1399, so I suppose it depends on the situation. I couldn't recommend an Explorer more, especially if you're looking for some inspiration.

I'm surprised that you didn't spend a little more time on the mid 1970's Ibanez Destroyer. Probably the first "replica" of the Gibson.
My first guitar was a 1979 Gibson Explorer in black and and then later got a 1976 Ibanez Destroyer in the natural finish. I always thought the Ibanez played better - but it could be that I just liked the the finish better on the Destroyer. Regret selling them (as usual).
Anyway, keep the history lessons coming - I really enjoy them - and thanks.
Did the Ibanez bring the monster Gibson tone along with the augmented playability?
@@lueysixty-six7300 It did. I believe Eddie Van Halen used an Ibanez Destroyer on their first album on the parts that were non-tremolo. By their third album he cut a chunk out of the body with a chain saw that also removed most the tone. It looked cool but he even says that he killed it.
I've considered getting a Destroyer. Partly due to nostalgia and a fondness for old Def Leppard. I had a bolt-on neck version back in the early 90's before I bought my Explorer new in '94.

An Explorer looks like one of my mom's coffee tables from around the time I was born in '57, which fills me with a sense
of nostalgia. So I always found it weird that the guitar that's the ultimate in '50s space age design had long become the
iconic guitar with musical genres that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the '50s (musically or visually, unless you
count Rick Neilson), as heavy metal and modern hard rock.

"A 50's coffee table". I was just thinking that seconds before I read your comment. That's what came to my mind as well - seeing the Korina guitars. Even though I enjoy U2's early albums, the explorer always reminded me of futuristic furniture - a slab of wood with a guitar neck protruding out one side. I guess it's a polarizing shape and I'm on the 'MEH' end of the spectrum. The original production numbers and prices (and updates for inflation) were really interesting.
Nah, it aint wierd. Explorer scream agression with its size and shape. A metal rythm guitar born long before its time :D

The Explorer is perphaps the best design Gibson has ever done. And IMO, Gibson is underutilizing this guitar along the Flying V and Firebird. I also feel they should make said guitars for bass players (along with more Thunderbirds). They would be awesome bass designs.
The Scorpions band members played Gibson guitars. Explorers, Flying Vs
and even 335s.

Gibson never listens to the musicians. That’s why the company is going downhill. That and they’re sue happy current owners. Fender is the opposite.
I hate stock Fender strat guitars. Sure they sound great and look cool. But most of their specs bug me. Position of the Volume, no angle to the neck, crappy trems, and noisy single coils. I custom build my own to get the exact features I like.
Not now, they've turned that company around, quality has gone way up and are selling like crazy
Ron Padgett it’s not ok that tooling marks are “ok” straight out of the factory. Sadly, it’s how you can tell it’s a real Gibson these days. I’m not saying it hasn’t gotten better but it’s still not the best QC. Fender wins in the QC department.
Donald Mousseau Well it sounds like you know exactly what you want. Like you, I end up customizing my guitars with parts and features that suit my needs. USA Fenders are always set-up very well from the factory. MIM and Indonesian models will always feel like they need a set-up right out of the box. I bought a $700 MIM tele that was shipped to me straight from fender and EVERYTHING needed adjusting. The neck was even sitting crooked in the body neck pocket. After a full set-up it played as nice as my USA tele, didn’t sound as good though.

By the way, Fernandez had a line of 'signature' guitars during the early 80's that included a Ritchie Blackmore Strat, an Angus Young SG and also a Clapton Explorer with the chopped body! Personally, I believe the *2nd* story is true; It was sold to him as custom-made by Gibson, and he got rid of it once he found out this wasn't true, feeling embarrassed and angry.
