Exactly! I had a guy tell me how his 327 in his s10 made 600-700hp NA... I said you realize that's nearly 2hp per cu. in.? That would be an insane combo

We have an alloy Windsor (bored / stroked to 417ci) that makes a little shy of 2HP/ci NA (on Q16).
And it's running a four speed manual H pattern box too!
We're going to throw a 'tiny' shot of NOS at it this season make it a trifle more exciting.

Contrary to your disappointment in the video, I think the 427 was very strong! My personal rule of thumb for a strong NA engine is 1.4 lb-ft per cu in at the torque peak and 1.25 lb-ft per cu in at the horsepower peak. Your 427, with very good parts in it except for the rockers, was well over those numbers by my calculations. By comparison, the 363 NA numbers were well short at about 1.3 and 1.2 respectively. It didn’t have 13:1 compression so maybe that’s understandable. It’s all good info, as we’ve come to rely on you to provide. Thanks!

Richard, was the 427 expectation that better shaft rockers would allow the engine to make more power by running higher RPMs, or were the rockers being used already cavitating and stealing power that a stiffer set-up would have been able to accommodate? Was the intent to give it more cam? Just trying to understand how it would make more power.
I am looking at an LS version of this approach and was thinking 750hp was about the limit of what could be expected, and to be honest would be plenty nuff. Probably targeting a usable 8,000-8,500 rpm redline. Just tying to get as many vantage points I can before dropping coin on that kind of build.

How in the world did that 331 make 448 with an xe274? Those heads must have been ported to perfection. You see I am trying to guesstimate my power. I am running a 331 with 9.6 cr and afr 185 heads with a performer rpm and comp 281hr cam with 1.7 ratio rockers. I figured it made 420 hp. So for my 388 build i bumped up my cam to an edelbrock 2281 ( 299 duration) in hopes of making 520 hp...your 408 stroker in the previous video only made 534 which made me think that no way my 388 would make 520, but maybe those afr 185 heads flow better than the trickflows on the 408.

It's really good information, data on top of data, especially if you haven't spent any money yet and you are going to start a project soon. It's a man taking years of dyno data of tons of engine combinations and laying it all out in front of us broken down and organized with all the answers we look for when we are about to make a change on our hot rod or maybe a new build and money is critical and any mistake has a good chance of putting an end to it.

I can't find the article. The website is down. I took a screenshot of it years ago but that's on an old phone. If I remember correctly it basically said the LS has many Ford attributes such as bore spacing, head bolt pattern, deep skirts, cross bolted mains, firing order, etc..... because it was designed by a Ford guy. I think it was Robert Yates that had a hand in the head design specifically.
Supposedly the LS head bolts onto a sbf but it needs some Frankenstein parts to make it jive.

Lol, low compression? How bout 13:1 with twin precision turbos, 22psi boost, carburated running meth, around 1300hp to 1500hp. I dont get why guys still build engines that run below 9:1 compression ratio. If you have proper fuel available from the pump, or the car wont be used as a daily, give it compression. Id like to hear your opinion Richard.
Im thinking about playing with high compression and some boost, but will be on a 4 banger. Highest octane here in my country is 95 unleaded pump gas. We dont have many options when it comes to v8 engines. A run of the mill old school small block engine will cost you more than buying a 1uz and swopping it into the car, including everything you would need to get the auto tranny shifting and tuning. Hence every 2nd pickup here runs a toyota 1uz.
