One of the most informative motor channels I’ve ever come across on YT. There’s plenty out there, but these guys really do the experimenting for you so you don’t have to do it yourself. The amount of money I’ve saved through just watching these guys experiment with different diff ratios and different turbos and superchargers
This dude is literally a saint. I don’t think everyone understands how valuable his non mythical advice is to the car community. So much bullshit, and idiot youtubers giving out misinformation, and creating stigmas about platforms that really have a lot of potential. You can make anything fast if you build it and run it correctly for its design strengths and weaknesses. Shit, you can throw ring gap in a Prius, and throw a K03 on it and probably make it toot and scoot. Often it’s human error, but we live in a society where it’s somehow better to open your mouth at all, even if nothing but shit comes out. I often notice guys talk about shit they have absolutely no idea about. Remember kids, it’s cooler to admit you don’t know shit about something, rather than dig a grave down to dumbassville and embarrass yourself trying to sound cool or smart. The car community is riddled with this mindset.
We split a 302 block on the dyno right at 800hp. It split right down the middle. It was at 15lbs of boost. Then we made some braces in the lifter valley and a better girdle and it lived after that boost level and it went in a customer’s fox body and ran 9.0’s and 8.90’s for about 2 years before he changed the set up.
I remember when MM&FF tried that...they ran out of wastegate springs just over 1000hp and tried to modulate boost with the throttle...which ended up with big swings in the boost coming on and off and eventually scattering the bottom end. I have to think Holdener, at the least, knew about the test...even if he wants to deny it to distance himself from that train wreck! 😆
Thank you sir.... I'm building an 88 mustang GT and due to family and kids. It's somewhat a budget build. I was already thinking about buying a cheap eBay kit (if I can find a single turbo setup) but this made up my mind. The motor has the basic stuff. Gt40P heads, Edelbrock upper and lower intake, 70mm throttle body, mild cam (was in it when I bought the car) full exhaust that won't matter with the turbo. But I'm realistic with what I've got. If I could sniff the 500hp range I'd be really happy in that light car. Just worried about the whole block splitting thing. But I figured with an eBay kit if the turbo itself ends up not lasting, it's alot cheaper to replace a turbo once the rest of the kit is already in place. Thank you for your videos
The man of the year Richard Holdener thank you for the turbo content we are waiting on cam test just like you ls guys get on a built stock botton motor..... put a boss block in the my 94 but It has same top end as this except it has an fcam
Man you need your own online shop. You make all these awesome videos imagine how many people would buy from you. Cheap eBay turbos, good turbos, turbo kits that fit certain cars with certain engines, cams, intakes. If you can get them directly from the manufacturer then come with competitive pricing you'd make good money. People trust you. Need a partner?! Lol
Awesome to see some 5.0 turbo love. I have the same turbo on mine and also using a Holley computer I'm already at 6.3psi and wanting 10-12 keeping the rpm down and the timing low let see how far this 302 can go
Love to see you test a remote turbo test. Then see how much exhaust length and intercooler pipe effects boost and lag ect. Love the videos! Iv been learning a ton!
Im glad you used the same manifolds that most of use would be using, cheap long tube, incompatible with your build, beat to shit manifolds! Thanks! Loving the content just subbed.
Keep the Ford Videos coming Richard!!!!!!!! Love to see some 351w Videos .... Ford big Bangs .... Maybe even some after market block test. Thanks for all the great content you have been putting out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did something very similar on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0. It has a 3 to 1, 3 to 1 stainless steel header, custom y pipe/up pipe, heavily modified 96-98 intake, Edelbrock head, small Comp Cam that is bigger than stock and a single turbo. It's running 9psi of boost. The power from 2k to 5k is amazing. Haven't had it on a dyno to know exactly what the power is. It easily out accelerates my 15 Silverado that has smaller tires and better gear splits in the transmission.
Could you try doing a comparison between blow through carb vs tbi (such as fitech or sniper) and a multiport system on a turbo or centrifugal supercharger?
I really want to see an intake manifold test for the 5.0 ford motor. I want to see the new Holley hi ram as well as the truck flow edelbrock ones, there is no tests like that I can find anywhere and want to make a more informed choice to buy one.
302 Chevy VS 302 Ford!! I know any motor of a given displacement will make about the same power but I would love to see a junk yard 302 Chevy build. Vortec 5.7L 4.00” bore block, pistons, & heads with the L99 3.00” stroke crank and 5.94” rods!! LT4 hot cam kit or better! -does the 4.9L 302 SBC kill the 5.0L 305 SBC? -does the 4.9L 302 SBC loose out to the 5.0L HO Ford?? -carb VS TPI + boost
I know this is an older video, but thanks for doing it. Love the other guys vids, they are AWESOME!!! Don't run yourself into the ground dude. Get some rest. I think most of us won't mind too much if the pace of vids falls off a little. The content is great! Thanks again.

Ok, so we talked about splitting blocks in your last Ford video. Now I'm curious, we know torque is the enemy, especially at lower RPMs, can you make *more* power NA by winding the motor high? Can you, or have you, made 600HP NA with a 302? That's 120HP/l, which I would have thought is unobtanium with a pushrod motor until recently, but I think with the right combo you could do that.

Could be some packages like light NA Bolton's, full NA Bolton's, Full NA and turbo, and for the guys out there that look for the nitrous or methanol injection a stand alone pack, ash the fox body and 93-95 sn95 engine bay is the same it can be cross gen and would get a lot of support in the international community as you seem of what you're talking about (let's not forget tuning you could give a file with the turbo kit or as a separate) So people can build as they have the money or enjoy the process, have a trusted source and you make some bucks in the process (please don't try to get rich with the kit the exchange rate for dollars in my country is very high and a fully prepared car costs an eye, don make it an eye, a kidney, the other eye and the other kidney 🥺) Love your content sorry for my English, hope to hear what you think 👍🏽
I would like to know the same thing. Was looking at different ones last night. With H/C/I, which Ebay GT45 is the best trim choice? More wisdom please Rich, great work.
Can we please get the details on exactly which trim GT-45 turbo you used or recommend for this type of package? Which heads were used in this test. Great videos......I even enjoy all the LS videos and I'm TRUE BLUE. Always love your content.
Finally a ford 5.0 do-it-yourself garage turbo build. Just my recommendation but could you touch more on the tuning and specification side. What kind of eBay Turbo? What timing and air/fuel ratio do you recommend? Subscribed!
These stock block , stock bottom 5.0's HATE RPM. Harmonics will literally snap the crankshaft in half at the #2 main if you rev above 6k regularly. Rev to 6500+ and it's lifespan is 5-15 hours of race use. And it will leave you scratching your head because harmonics don't leave any evidence behind. Happened 3 times in 2 years racing in 24 hours of Lemons. Only way around it is aftermarket block and forged rotating assembly that is INTERNALLY neutral balanced instead of 50oz external.... which costs around $3500 when you could just get a 5.3L for $600. The guys that made theirs last were long time fox body tuners with a rev limit at 5500rpm. Powerwise , they'll handle 550rwhp +/- 30hp before breaking the block, every time.
There is a big difference between between the early 28.2 and later 50oz inch 302/5.0 crankshafts. Obviously. You can physically feel the difference in the balance in the damper by the difference in the cut. The earlier crankshafts are reputed to be stronger as well and I don't know if this true but I can imagine that the early cranks that have a lower balance won't have as many issues if you want to Rev them over 6k regularly.
Good to see you here I'm a subscribe and loved all your exhaust experiments with e46 swapped 5.0!!! .That being said I agreey buddy had a stock bottom end on a turbo for upwards of 15 years he mad a best of 409 hp to the wheels and 468 torque and it ran like a champ but he shifted at 5400 no higher . Believe or not it survived many years ona stock t5 . He mad a home made jig to add bigger valve reliefs and was almost done and gouged a big nick in the cylinder wall so it wasnt worth spending the money money to repair . He built a dart 363 kept turbo and it made with same turbo 650 hp 754 torque at 5200 rpm lol he couldn't go higher as he re an out of fuel with 120lb injectors.
Richard in your opinion, what is the maximum of boost you can run on engine. Before you need to open it and gap the rings? Or what boost pressure would you recommend for a untouched bottom end daily driver?
Seems like he mentioned that in another video. Safely 7-8psi is what's been mentioned in some circles. Kinda like the turbo kits for totally stock vehicles. Some of those are 5lbs max.
Its not a boost level, its ring temperature. Things that change ring temp include boost, inlet air temp (intercooler or not), fuel used (E85 is better), timing, amount of time under boost and load (WOT for 1-30 minutes even at low boost can be bad) just gap them for long term use
@@Turbo_Todd thank u. 5-7 psi seems to be the norm around GM supercharged vehicles. Not sure about the Buick grand national or the later cobalt SS psi.
Hey Richard, can you do a test on the Windsor block with standard head, tds or after market option heads and put Cleveland aftermarket heads, with this turbo setup?
I don’t know I found I was doing the no helmet thing when I started. Now experienced, I always find myself just putting the helmet on from start to finish. And obviously lifting between welding
Unless I'm welding upside down directly underneath something I usually omit the helmet. Most of the bench stuff I end up using gloves and a 4" glass lol.
I started working on my turbo system before the video ended and Richard said it had to fit in the engine compartment. Now my turbo is under the bed of my truck. Help!
Yes! Finally more Ford videos, thank you

Thing ran pretty good NA - 350-375 lb/ft from 3300-5700.
That's not a torque curve; that's a torque tabletop
Pretty impressive for a 5.0
plateau
I agree that engine N/A set up would be so much fun to drive on the street. Endless torque is so much better than a huge turbo spike IMHO.
@@bill2178 stock 5.0 runs pretty good if you give it some more air, fuel and timing
good heads and good intake plus good duration on the cam to take advantage of it all. 224 and 232

Ron Gravel Is the 302 block the same in a fox body compared to a sn95 ?

I really feel like the average hot rod guys and girls could do a lot of damage with a 550 hp small block! Good job Richard as always.
Do a big bang on a 302. I wanna know of the blocks rly do split down the middle

Rich, can you do a video where you purposely split the block? Just like when you ran that SBC with no oil.
should be easy, just put the timing back in at the bottom and itll split in half at current hp/torque levels. lol
You could even score the block and it will peel away from the internals nice and clean.
I vote a test on stock blocks with arp studs, sbf, And sbc. Hell I’ll donate the sbc block.

Canton main girdle, eagle steel rods , crank , and forged diamond pistons . Then your good to go .
girdle won't stop the block from splitting unfortunately
Try that with downs ford upper intake manifold! Made just under 900 hp with intake change out 720 hp well know upper and lower
have tested the downs Ford box upper-it (like all the others) loses power through much of the curve from short runners

Richard in your opinion, what is the maximum of boost you can run on engine. Before you need to open it and gap the rings? Or what boost pressure would you recommend for a untouched bottom end daily driver?
Great question
@@richardholdener1727 thank you Richard for replying. Not the specific answer I was looking for, but knowledge is power.
Early birds get the worms
Hey Richard, can you do a test on the Windsor block with standard head, tds or after market option heads and put Cleveland aftermarket heads, with this turbo setup?
The was meant to say tfs not tds
The trouble with TDS is, they burn your city down and defund the police. I hope they find a cure.
Cover intake ports when welding next to them... ; )
Hello, What is the blueprint head model number. Thank you
With that cam.. would have been a nasty street motor
Also... was that guy pushing the tip of the welder up against the metal , using one hand and no helmet? 😂
@@CanadaBud23 You should cover your skin if you're doing more than tacking. UV radiation = skin cancer.
I started working on my turbo system before the video ended and Richard said it had to fit in the engine compartment. Now my turbo is under the bed of my truck. Help!
Hey richard, you ever play with the nissan vg30 or vq35 engines? Plenty of junkyard potential there
What weight oil should I use for a Journal bearing GT 45 turbo engine👍👍👍👍
5W-30
How much horsepower is safe for the block
I subscribed just because of this video!
Why dont you run higher levels of N20? Worried about any part in particular?
