It’s very expensive to have children. Women are expected to work throughout pregnancy, take a few weeks off work then back to work. Then there’s childcare expenses. Then when she gets home it’s housework, feeding the family, and putting them to bed. It sounds exhausting. People want a life, not servitude. It’s a very different world from when I had children. I took care of my children at home until they were teenagers before returning to the workplace.
Yeah $150 per day, per child for childcare, and your job wants you to work 5 days a week. And if you get paid $200 per day after paying for childcare you have $250 for everything else. It's a joke, not to mention the address stress of everyday life. 😅
They are saying that women who want kids should prioritize family but why should we do this when it’s not beneficial to us? Why should women sign up for a life of hardship and financial struggle for the greater good of the world in a world that’s not prioritizing making child bearing more desirable to us?

If you want to have kids, go for it and if you don’t, then don’t. It’s that simple and it’s nobody’s business
How can people have kids first and then start a career???? How are people going to pay for all their living expenses, childcare expenses, education expenses, if they aren’t working? Does he think money falls out of the sky?
He is explaining that, as a society, we didn't take into account that fertility has a limited window and our current expectations are not sustainable or realistic. (just to point out, 80% of childless individuals are childless due to circumstance and not by choice.) He is simply bringing awareness to the situation before it becomes so bad that having a career will be the least of your worries or not even possible. The current trend of depopulation isn't a slow decline, it will fall off a cliff (careers will go with it too). We need to seriously find a solution to this and think about it deeply.
Nobody wants to employ a 40 year old beginner, even if she has a degree. They want work experience which you can't get caring for a child and doing housework.
@@chriswatson1698no but why can't we employ 30 year old beginners and have children in our 20's when fertility is at it's highest. After all most of us will be working well into our 70's. So even in your 30's you still have 40 good working years ahead of you.
@@chriswatson1698The vast majority of people, with and without degrees, have jobs. They don't have engrossing careers. They don't have "callings" (unless they become priests or nuns). If people are cash and time-poor (because they have to work A LOT to meet their basic human needs), they won't have kids. No one wants to have kids just to see them suffer or not have time to see them at all. Unfortunately under our current economic system, we squeezed the working and middle class to the point where they can barely look after themselves, and have no spare resources to look after someone else. It's funny how wealthy people see it coming but are doing nothing to make living more affordable. Most don't want a family in an unaffordable and unsustainable environment.

The trillionaires funded the conditions to encourage this. A lot of billionaires are on board as well. They intend to replace the low IQ masses with Ai and robots. They just need a controllable select few for breeding and creativity. The species might actually be better for it if Ai doesn’t get out of control.
Two Canadian demographers back in 2016 said the cell phone has a HUGE impact on women deciding to delay having children an to get jobs and leave villages and poverty for the city to live without children. All this is actually a big POSITIVE aspect to empowering individuality, but the side effect is fewer children.
Exactly. Women have realised that they don't want to buy in to the endless drudgery of childrearing and lack of liberty.and time for travelling and doing fun stuff. Tubal ligatures and vasectomies should be for free for all!
I'm struggling with the notion that women don't know it's harder to conceive as they get older. I'm British, mid-50s, childfree (by choice) and I believe my generation of women knew this; at least I don't believe it was just me and my circle of friends.
This is the reason we need more young people. Young people want chance and make an impact, and they are innovative. Old people want to keep the status quo.
You are right . The rich profit from over population. especially the grain for famine suppliers. They really coin it . One firm actually confessed to manipulating grain prices for extra profits. Just the ultra rich....A year later they came back to find that the teeming population was now one a billion and these super immune few had no appetite at all for menial labour and would not carry bags or repair cars .Even worse the ultra rich caught the new infection and in another few months were also only a hundred in number. Not entirely... Once one has made the eco-responsible or moral decision to not add more innocent human beings into this massively overpopulated and dying planet, it doesn't matter how much money/financial benefits a government is willing to offer, many people will still refuse to procreate. Having to compete for housing with childless, double income couples is causing housing costs to skyrocket, further disincentivizing couples that would’ve had children with a single income. Or, if your single and a millennial or gen z, your going to have to room with 3 roommates to afford a crappy place. Of course your not going to afford to marry and have kids in that situation.
How are childfree couples impairing family creation and housing affordability? They have to pay the same astronomical amount of money for housing. It's not like they get a discount if they don't have kids. Even with two incomes they are struggling to pay rent or mortgage. Here in Europe, couples get thousands of Euros a year if you have children
@@azmodanpc hmm I’m not sure about families with multiple children. But I was just saying being a childless couple even on modest incomes the people can afford luxuries that’s why the luxury market is booming even as fertility rates plummet. At least here in the US I don’t think there’s too many benefits to having kids at least not that I’m aware of.
It is because childless couples can keep the extra cash and push into the housing market, whereas couples with children who have naturally more expenses and actually need the space have to spend a lot into their children, making them compete with a very different and more rich group.
@@aysepersona4194 Childfree couples may need less space to live than couples with children. Those houses are already too small for them. If I'm childfree and looking for a house, I would rather buy a cheaper, smaller house.
@@azmodanpc unfortunately, the statistics show, that this is rather not holding true. Childless couples orient their square footage around their BUDGET, not their space needs. This holds true for most people in most situations.
Mothers are penniless. Another person controls the means by which she satisfies her own needs and that of her children When a woman does most of the child care, or takes time off work when her children need adult attention, she is investing in the earning power of that child's father at the expense of her own. She must have a well established career of her own to be secure, because the father of her children is free to abandon her at any time and halve her living standard, on no grounds at all. Then the years of investment that she has made in supporting her husband's career, will go to benefit another woman, probably younger and with a career.
If I can’t afford a house and Expect for it to raise in value so I can make financial gains from said house how would I expect my made up children to afford the current trend?
That's the issue, isn't it? World population growth was a sign of success. It means we have better science, better health care and more food. But I don't agree with Shaw when he says everyone should have a choice to have kids or not. That's how we ended up in this situation, i.e. overpopulation in terms of resources. I worked for almost fifty years in a stressful job. Now that I am retired it is the first time in my life that I feel that life is worth living.
The rise in infertility is to do with the modern lifestyle we are living. Processed foods, less exercise, sedentary lifestyles, instant foods, over working which leads to more stress. Chemicals in the food, air and water that gets into our system and messes our hormones. Also both men and women are too busy pursuing their career rather than coming together and raising a family in a traditional environment where the father manages the income and the mother manages the home.
I think the problem is urbanization. Cost of housing is extremely high and space is tight. One or two people living in a small apartment is doable, you start adding children to that mix and it becomes crowded way too fast. Not having a child as an easy decision when you live in 500 square-foot apartment that you can barely afford. That all comes from moving into a city.
Childrearing still predominantly falls on women and unduly burdens them in so many facets. People should not be surprised that there is an increase in Child-Free people. Let the world reset. The model of having more children than an aged population is not sustainable in the current world with people living increasingly longer.
You have to find a man that wants you first. By the time most women want kids, men are now just checking out. It's no longer worth the risk. Men and women are choosing loneliness over the other and procreating.

It's an illusion of choice. Growing government with extra taxes, going off the gold standard in 1971 all has led to the shrinking of family's. The children watched their mothers juggle the work and home life seeing their struggle. They observed and learned that it's not only hard it's impossible to give a 100% to both. Government is the problem not the solution, taxes and worthless dollar keeps us enslaved chasing an illusion of worth. Young people are seeing having children as providing another slave to the government corporation, unless they find or are able to break out of the monetary matrix children will be a burden instead of a blessing.
Less people means more room for other species, which are increasingly at risk from our societies. The Natural World needs more room with less of us and more space for them!
Exactly. Earth's ecosystem thanks those who have made the eco-responsible choice of not having kids in this massively overpopulated planet with rapidly depleting resources and catastrophic climate change previsions. Breeding is selfish.
Its not just the career part, its the cost of living! But the 2 are interconnected because due to the higher cost of living ppl feel the need to prioritize career so that they can make enough money to live. How can one even think about having kids if on 2 incomes sometimes ppl still struggle to stay afloat? Rent and housing costs have increased exponentially. In Toronto, a 1 bedroom apartment is now $2000 or over, depending on where you live. That's half or more than half of someone's income in a lot of cases. If you have kids you need more space. Not to mention cost of food...cost of everything has gone up. So yeah, i dont see this get better any time soon. Make it affordable to live comfortably on 1 income..maybe then things will improve.
Many people have rationally considered the pros and cons of breeding have arrived at the conclusion that breeding is not right for them due to ecological or moral/ethical issues. In general the childfree by choice community are way above average IQ level because they have thought through this very process.

Look at a population evolution graph, it has shot up in the last two centuries with an incredible speed, what we see now is the correction that follows such an growth . Animals will not reproduce if conditions are not right, generally they need a surplus of food available above their own needs to raise offspring. I believe the same is true for humans. High housing costs, high work hours, poor job security, poor wages in relation to living costs, high utility costs and the added stress of having children adding to an already financially stressed population means that people will choose not to reproduce. If the conditions are not right, educated people in the developed World will not have children, they know and understand the stress they will be under if they do. Others will argue that 3rd World countries do not have this problem, but this is a poor comparison as children are an asset that can be put to work at the age of 5, in the developed world a child is an economic burden until the age of 16 or 21 depending on tertiary education length. Many animals like deer can actually re-absorb the fetus back into their own body if resources are too scarce to support offspring.
Austrian here, we have 4 children, (1 is severly mentally handicapped), and we talk a lot about all this. As I Learned that Most of my childhood friends have no kids i was shocked. I am 42 my kids are 23, 20, 15 and 12. I hope at least one will have kids.😢 We had no money with the small kids, all our friends had shiny things and holidays, and we were at home caring for sick kids. Howcan a new car or a new phone or a job be more important than family. 😢 Its bad
Why do you hope people have kids? If someone wants kids great but for many people work is more demanding, cost of living is high, requirements of education are high, and there are no strong incentivise to have kids. In fact, not having kids means more disposable income, less stress and more autonomy. You’ll have to make a really good case for parenthood in my opinion otherwise only those who really want to experience it or those that have accidents will. Good day
Its not so much the material things but also the time and energy both work and children demand that frightens people...maybe you just can manage but what if there's a disruption one way or the other...its a dilemma...i admire the couples that are daring enough..
People who choose not to have kids do not prefer the new car or the new phone. We prefer opting out of parenthood. Not living as a family is our aim, time is our wealth - additional consumption is just a bonus, nothing more than a side effect.
As a childless person who moved up in the socioeconomic ladder when I started working, I'm just beginning to experience the benefits of this status I no longer have to deal with clothes/shoes that disintegrate after half a year I no longer have to deal with phones that get cranky after a yr I don't have to worry if I have the means to buy everything on the doctor's medicine prescription Being on a higher economic ladder enables a person to build a better credit score which means lower interest rates in the future when buying a house/car Descending to a lower economic status is something I can't afford because I'm witnessing how the quality of the 'affordable' things my family used to buy when I was young is becoming worse over the years while its price is becoming less affordable
Why have four! Didn't you consider the environmental impact of adding such large number of new resource consuming humans onto this resources-depleted planet? Why do you hope one of your offspring has kids? Do you think you will be cheating death?
When emotive words such as 'frightening' are used, then there absolutely is a bias, if not an agenda. It is one thing to report that countries are below replacement level, it is another to make a judgement call on that. Quite apart from which, unless you think that we can grow forever, then sub-replacement and a birth gap is a mathematical requirement at some point anyway. The question is how it is to be managed.
Numbers in some coutries are frightening. It's not just population decline but collapse. Fertility rate in South Korea is so low and declines so fast that if the trend continues the Fertility rate in about 25 years might be virtually zero. China alone will lose more people by the of this century then all the people living in South America. Nobody knows how to turn Fertility rates back up. Scandinavian coutries have generous benefits and are still Below replacement and dropping.
@@bobsontheepic42 Numbers are not frightening, they are just numbers. It's whether an individual chooses to be alarmed. Just as some people are alarmed by declines, others are more alarmed by the increases that we've had. It's the bias of whoever makes the programme as to which side they take.

This interview seems to be putting all the pressure on women rather than on men and society in engineering a world hostile to childbirth and childbearing.
No he is saying that women can only have children so long. They are not like men where they can have children into their 70s. A woman at 40 has like a 5% chance to have a child naturally and past 43 the chances to have a child naturally is less the 1%. If you take IVF into account a women 40 and to 45 years old still have less than a 15% chance to have a kid with her own egg. Then even with a egg donor the % is still low unless she is healthy and has a healthy uterus. And that is after taking account having to pay anywhere from 30k to 100k in IVF cost just for an attempt to have a child.
Overall this is a European, Asia and a western world problem. Africa and the Middle East does not have this problem. So those regions possibly will be the future leaders of the world.
We can say that young people should have children to replace the elderly and dying!!!! But have they really thought about how they are going to feed the whole world if some of those countries can't produce much or any food in the future
Food production methods around the world have become incredibly efficient to the point that we now produce too much food. The problem (and potential famine) around the World is caused by conflict, corruption, and disrupted supply chains, as they have been for circa 40 years.
Family doesn't always equate to children. Siblings can be family too. Aunt and Uncle, grandparents, adopted, godparents, cousins, niece, nephew. Not having kids doesn't mean not being loved by another person and to not love in return.
What I see many people don't understand (and we can see it in the comments) is that fertile age for women is not equal to the time when they have menstruation in their life. Data shows that while the probability of having conception is high starting from ~15 (start of the cycles, number is approximate) it starts declining a little bit after ~25 years. And while this probability is still high on average at the age of 30, but starting from age 35 the decline of a probability of conceiving can be rather described as a sharp fall. It is average and normal. So while the menopause comes after 45 for most of the women, there are almost no chances to have kids after 40 (without IVF and preferably frozen eggs). And of cause there are some lucky individuals to whom this general statistics doesn't apply, but the number of them is very very small. So if an average woman discovers that she has problems conceiving at the age 36 the problems can be attributed to a normative decline in fertility and not to any specific health problems (due to diet, air pollution or anything else as suggested in some comments). The generation of our grand moms had the same pattern in fertility, but they were not interested in having child at 36 (it's a random example) cause they already had 3 kids by the time they were 30. And unfortunately IVF is no magic wand. It certainly increases the chances of having kids if there are problems with natural conceiving, but the effectiveness again tightly correlates with the woman's age. On the other hand men have an illusion that they can catch up after 40 because they don't have the problem of menopause at all. But hard truth is that while theoretical possibility is there, only very few successful man will be able to find someone in a fertile age as a potential mother of their child. Vast majority of those childless men after 40 will remain childless. But everyone tends to forget about men.
@@carmenricard3332 to those interested I would suggest to search in google "women's fertility with age" and "women's fertility with age research". Lagos, yes Lagos is about to become the first 100 million city! Just imagine the sheer horror of that?
Me.too. I'm concerned and disappointed that people are not concerned about the environmental impact of adding more uselessly-needed humans to this overcrowded planet.
I don't want that authorities and overall other people are discussing and speculating why women don't make children. Having kids is not other people's business, it's a personal decision. What authorities should do is just show a way to how to adapt economically in this situation. Not to tell how women should consider their personal decision due that declining fertility. This is just natural reaction over populated planet so don't even think about start baby propaganda.
Women are more concerned about careers, money, and security than having children and a family. Then it's too late because they are too old to be having children. The demographics now is that everywhere you go seniors and elderly people.
Education of women, at least in the current way we are doing it, is a species ending development. Cross culturally it is being demonstrated. Maybe the alternative is to shift education for women to only ages 0-12 or 14, and for men ages 0-14 to 18 educate men. If you look at the current pattern of 0-21+ for both genders and compare that to the fertility window for women starting at about 12-30 which is 18 years of safe reproduction. With current education patterns we are eating into 9 years of that window, and even worse we are eating into those years by placing women in environments where child bearing is reinforced to be a failure and that cultural reinforcement doesn't fade quickly once they are out of those environments. And that is even before we start talking about further education towards masters/phds which is another 4-8 years cutting into woman's fertility windows. We to rethink how we usher women into working adulthood. Honestly I don't think women should be incentivized to work during this period of their life, then accelerate them into the work force at 30 if they choose to do so. Allow them to enter and catch up in companies. University should be banned for everyone under the age of 30, there are so many reasons why this would be beneficial A SIGNIFICANT quantity of 18 year olds have 0 clue what they want to do with their life, let alone what they want to spend a ton of money getting a degree in. This whole thing stemmed from treating men and women the same and shoving them into education paths that worked fine for men, but fundamentally do not function for women due to the biological reality of their gender.
@@koy540 In the end it is a choice. Even if you banned women from education why would make them have a child? Those who want to have children or are financially ready to have children will have them. You don't need secondary education to get a job or have a career. Banning secondary schooling for girls will just create resentment and make it harder for women financially which could cause fewer kids.
@emeraldspark8794 well i believe my argument was banning everyone from college until 30. Not just women. But I am glad you emphasized choice. When do women pay for their choice to not have kids? They are externalitizing the cost of their choice on the rest of society. "What do you mean cost?" You might shortsideldly ask. Well, how about the complete collapse of society that is currently happening. Our population is about to start falling incredibly fast. Our entire world economy is set to implode in a few decades do to the choices of women. This attack on the human species these hedonistic women are perpetrating deserves a punishment. I purpose any woman able to have kids that fails to have 2 children should be banned from voting and owning property.
You prioritise what you want in life. If women wanted children they would have them in their prime. The women who leave it too late clearly are undecided so don’t think are too bothered when they end up not having kids.
@@koy540 In other words, you can’t accept that the way we’ve set up our society is fundamentally flawed as it requires us to constantly grow the population instead of keeping it steady. As a result, too many people are now on the earth and we’re killing the environment. So, as of now, it seems the choice is between a massive population drop now, or a total population drop within the next 50 years. That’s the future you’re giving your children. 😋
Population decline is a concern because the world economy is based on capitalism and economy growth. Your economy can’t grow if you don’t have kids and this can cause recessions/depressions. This is common economical sense. If nothing else you must replace the population. The worse case is you have more elders than children so your population is upside down. You don’t have enough people to pay into taxes and pay into social security which runs up a Deficit and the country will have less resources to provide to the public. You see this now is places like Greece and Italy. Where their economy has shrank and less jobs and less taxes brought in. You have literal ghost towns. This also leads to nationalism and anti immigration. A shrinking population where you need immigrants, but the population gets angry because they feel that the immigrants are getting access to the shrinking resources which then causes a rise in racism and nationalism with the shrinking population of the area.
In aftican society to not have a child can be very isolating for any woman. Even a highly educated African woman knows that if she doesn't have any children the husband will marry another wife or father children outside. To be unmarried in African society for a woman is a big headache, even married women avoid friendship with you in case you snatch their husband. So no sane African woman can afford to refuse to have children, you are treated as an outcast and the most vicious attacks come from fellow women. So this declining birth rate cannot apply to Africa, it can never happen,i am an African I know what I am saying. I saw what happened to my auntie, it was so sad...
It will happen in Africa. I'm from west Africa. Birth rates are pegged to women. However, the issue now is those women will not find males that want them. Risk reward has changed.
It is a very serious issue like climate change. Advance countries like Japan and Italy failed miserably to reverse the shrinking population trend so what about the state of poor developing nations like India. Migration is nothing but a termperary solution. Laborateries are to be set up to produce children in the near future accepting sperm and eggs from healthy intelligent people. Hope China is able to initiate the big step without a delay
No it isn’t. Assuming at some point Net Zero will be abandoned in favour of more effective measures (such as proper flood defences, relocation initiatives, building in newly temperate areas, air conditioning etc), we will need tax receipts to pay for those measures. Fewer people, lower tax receipts.
Good talk on the subject. Along with population replacement and matting migration and governments panicking about social support systems and funding. Some countries have similar problems and others unique problems from the society. Small armies of single men and women in countries. A lot of left behind and bias imprinted. STD rates contribute a little to infertility rates and birth complications. But the big thing is a lot of females are sold on things like saving eggs which has a low viability rate. I'm not sure most of them know about prime birthing age or even if they want kids. A few kicker compounding things with a range of statistics pointing to things.
This is such a controversary topic. We are told that there are not enough children but we are dealing with overpopulation, societies struggle to house people and unemployment is on the rise, the environment can't cope longer with us. Natural scientists keep telling for decades that there are too many people on Earth and nature suffers. So where is the truth?
Who will be pushing our wheel chairs when all of us are in wheel chairs? Who will be our care givers when all of us are in retirement home complexes? Who will fix the public utilities and their power cables, water lines, sewage lines? Who will fix that and fix this? Who? Not to forget is who will be the police to maintain law and order?

Having to compete for housing with childless, double income couples is causing housing costs to skyrocket, further disincentivizing couples that would’ve had children with a single income. Or, if your single and a millennial or gen z, your going to have to room with 3 roommates to afford a crappy place. Of course your not going to afford to marry and have kids in that situation.
How are childfree couples impairing family creation and housing affordability? They have to pay the same astronomical amount of money for housing. It's an illusion of choice. Growing government with extra taxes, going off the gold standard in 1971 all has led to the shrinking of family's. The children watched their mothers juggle the work and home life seeing their struggle. They observed and learned that it's not only hard it's impossible to give a 100% to both. Make it affordable to live comfortably on 1 income..maybe then things will improve.

too many unproductive workers actually
Did not know that 😮. ( The animals part) I love reading comments on UA-cam. I learn so much
Austrian here, we have 4 children, (1 is severly mentally handicapped), and we talk a lot about all this. As I Learned that Most of my childhood friends have no kids i was shocked. I am 42 my kids are 23, 20, 15 and 12. I hope at least one will have kids.😢
We had no money with the small kids, all our friends had shiny things and holidays, and we were at home caring for sick kids.
As a childless person who moved up in the socioeconomic ladder when I started working, I'm just beginning to experience the benefits of this status
I no longer have to deal with clothes/shoes that disintegrate after half a year
I no longer have to deal with phones that get cranky after a yr
I don't have to worry if I have the means to buy everything on the doctor's medicine prescription
Being on a higher economic ladder enables a person to build a better credit score which means lower interest rates in the future when buying a house/car
Descending to a lower economic status is something I can't afford because I'm witnessing how the quality of the 'affordable' things my family used to buy when I was young is becoming worse over the years while its price is becoming less affordable
Why have four! Didn't you consider the environmental impact of adding such large number of new resource consuming humans onto this resources-depleted planet? Why do you hope one of your offspring has kids? Do you think you will be cheating death?

At last some common sense in the population discussion, well done.
Having a kid seems stressful

@@JJ-te2pi I wish it were nonsense, unfortunately reality doesn't bear this out. Show me a high fertility, high IQ African nation.
But everyone tends to forget about men.
only in developed countries, in underdeveloped countries women get pregnant even at 50!!

Too many historical factors. WW2 and it’s aftereffects (PTSD etc)was a big one.

In other words, you can’t accept that the way we’ve set up our society is fundamentally flawed as it requires us to constantly grow the population instead of keeping it steady. As a result, too many people are now on the earth and we’re killing the environment. So, as of now, it seems the choice is between a massive population drop now, or a total population drop within the next 50 years. That’s the future you’re giving your children. 😋

A declining population isnt bad we just dont want a sudden drop
Choose :
Civilization?

Hope China is able to initiate the big step without a delay

Fewer people, lower tax receipts.
Good talk on the subject. Along with population replacement and matting migration and governments panicking about social support systems and funding. Some countries have similar problems and others unique problems from the society. Small armies of single men and women in countries. A lot of left behind and bias imprinted.
