Population Decline: Crisis or Opportunity?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 чер 2024
- The world’s population may have recently topped 8 billion for the first time, but where the worries were once about the world becoming too crowded, now the concern is about a drop in global fertility rates.
There are very real fears that a shrinking, ageing population could be catastrophic for the global economy and its healthcare systems. But some experts argue that there might in fact be an upside to population decline - especially when it comes to the earth’s natural resources.
In this episode of The Agenda, Juliet Mann speaks to Stephen J Shaw, data scientist, demographer and Director of the documentary "Birthgap - Childless World", Peter Elwin - Director of Fixed Income & Head of Food & Land Use Programme at Planet Tracker, Haleh Nazeri, Longevity Economy lead at the World Economic Forum and Dr Jennifer Sciubba - demographics expert and author of the book "8 billion and counting: How sex, death and migration shape our world”.

Corporations and governments are terrified that they're going to run out of wage, debt, and tax slaves.
I was just about this lol thank you.
do you really believe that?
@@WilliamSantos-cv8rr yes
@@Stoddardian Good luck with then because what I have seen so far is the billionaires giving all the support for the poor not forming family.
“If this society wants more children, they have to figure out ways of giving people like me more money”
growth has been behind most of us for decades, except of course for the rich.
Gender equality? Well I am all for it and increasing paid parental leave, etc. But to claim low birth rates are due to a lack is a stretch... it wasn't too long ago that birth control wasn't even an option, or opting out of marriage. Celebrate the progress people ✨️ 💪 🎉
quality of life is a thing you know.....
Yes and that will drop significantly in the years to come. Welcome to a world where almost everybody will become much poorer over time.
No countries come out of it because the people who have the responsibility of shaping the bounds of society won't ever listen when the society they are shaping screams out: we can't afford anything!
There are too many "excess", "unnecessary" people over there
Well...HERE. Europe is massively overpopulated.
On top of that, I grew up in a emptyish town, post factory... It was lonely, very lonely... None of you will actually enjoy the population decrease. As it decreases your depression will increase.
But, you can move when you're an adult. People are lonely now with all the tech we have now. Americans don't even like children playing outside & put in noise complaints when they do. So, I live in a community full of children but everyone hates them & attempts to make them stay away from each other. Population decline 🩰 💃 🎉 😊
They would enjoy more food being available once we exceed that limit and the starvation starts.
Extrovert, introverts exist. Just fyi
Empty spaces & roads give me immense joy. Im getting goosebumps now at just the thought 😊
@@Withnail1969 the opposite happens, less food, restaurants permanently close off sections of restaurants.
90 to 95 percent of women wanted to have a child during their childbearing years i think this is a bit high around here a lot of women dont want to have children at all
😂40 % women is childless in Jerman
When they're young they want their future self to do it, and when they're old they want their past self to do it. But they never want it here and now.
I agree!
@@castirondude That's an interesting way to put it.❗❗
A 100% a blessing for a tired overcrowded planet !
Who likes gridlock, lines, scarcity, polution, and a degraded quality of life !
Welcome decreased population !
It’s very good that we are coming to an equilibrium. With our planet and its resources. All successful organic species have a constant population in a given context. Nothing bad with that.
An older human population will signify that we will have more knowledge, prudence and wisdom and less desire to conquest through wars.
Lord Have Mercy! Why won't anybody say what needs to be said. This problem is laid right at the feet of women and the feminist movement and as the third world becomes more liberated for there women this will be there future. Women can definitely get educated and get jobs just as men and that may make them free, that is debatable if someone is free because they have Job. The problem is men can not do women's part of our society they can not have babies. If women don't go back to having babies our society and people will disappear. (But women will have had a good Job) What a victory.👍
Good point. But realize this: there WILL NOT be a global Handmaid's Tale implemented successfully. The Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu tried to implement this by banning birth control and this failed HORRIFICALLY. There were abandoned children in orphanages that died from neglect. So it's not about thinking of FORCING women to have children only, those children MUST be WANTED and RAISED properly for humanity to have a future. Understand that women will NOT go back to being relegated simply to the domestic sphere and bearing the total burden of raising children again. That era is over.
The market for people is declining. About time
There is no population decline.
Exactly. We just gained 100 million plus people last year.
@@NashHinton The media has people lost in a world of nonsense.
You want kids, increase my pathetic wages and reduce my 60 hour workweek hours.
Increased toxic wastes (plastics etc.) combined with cuts in medical services led to an increase in the percentages of people reaching the age of 100--entirely predictable.
People without children should get a fraction of the vote and a fraction of the pay and additional tax burdens than people with children. They are effectively free riders. People with families should be favored by all government agencies.
That will only encourage more childlessness. So yeah, let's do it.
Woman marry across and up hierarchies and men across and down on average.
Woman become more awesome, and educated which result in less viable male partners.
Most women who do not have children do so mostly bc they prioritize their careers or never found a quality partner. I think less than 20% of childless woman are childless bc of not wanting children.
Housing is also crazy for 2/3 bedrooms rn and student loans are crushing Americans (micro problem).
Great video btw!
@@XXmtdnacommunism and socialism wasn’t exactly the best for family formation or survival compared to capitalism.
But yes you’re right but however I do think the video was good
Only developed countries see it as a crisis coz they don't have unemployment problems but the developing countries with millions of jobless people who have to seek jobs outside their countries see it as an opportunity atleast they will get jobs
We need that growing population of older people to start 'declining'. That makes more resources available to younger people, and would induce population growth
The thing is that people are actually aging less quicker as compared to the past.
Why? So those young people can be exploited for profits and taxes?
@@JoJo-ie8sl it's easy to make more resources. My whole life I heard we don't have enough water, yet it's the one thing we have the most of. It just needs innovation, and getting things done to get the salt out of it when we need it
Is the s&p 500 still a good investment?
I'm guessing it will be extremely difficult to make quick money in the near future. Possibly difficult to make much money at all.
Prepare for living standards a la 1924...if we're lucky. If not lucky, then the Stone Age.
nothing to be worried of the AI will massively increase productivity
What about the other side ? Consumption?
Really? AI is the solution? AI can do all the work for us and we'll all be forever rich? 😂
If there was no slavery and wars africa would be 7 billion people by now africa doesn't have population problem it has enough space for 7 billion people
Which country wants population please come to India and import people because India have 1.5 billion people
It's an Opportunity. We need less people. My wife and I have no kids. It's better.
100 million people will live to be 100 years of age in 50 years .🤔🤔🤔
The lifespan has actually decreased since 2021. Wasn't there some new medicine that came on the market in 2021?
The Planet feeds on us, don't you think the carbon cars make the carbon that the plants use to build their structures and do chemical exchanges of oxygen.
Yes, more CO2 = more plantlife and greenery.
Carbon-dioxide not carbon monoxide.. we are not feeding the earth we're poisoning it and ourselves
Y'all are talking about CO3🤦🏾♀️ it in fact doesn't benefit the earth at all
Opportunity
Agree. Change = opportunity.
Funded by the Chinese Government WTH 😂
You obviously love India with huge blowout in population.
China have managed its population growth well…..
Many young couples want few children ….so as to have a better standard of life.
👍🇧🇷🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳🇿🇦➕️👍👏👏👏✌️
Is this woman really going on about the gender pay gap in 2024 24 minutes in? Wow
The pay gap is pretty much non-existent between young men and young women in fact more women out earn most young guys these days the only reason why we have a pay gap has to do with the older generation of men still working corporate jobs or grandfathered in with their union manufacturing jobs making $40 an hour but that's not true with the younger men
Are you really trying to make a point without backing it up with any substance at all?
We need protection of all humans life from moment of conception.
If having a boy and a girl means having both (by inventing such a future) and man taking it into his own hands and making a strict global rule that every couple in the world should have only one boy and one girl (only two such children) without any discrimination in the world. And if the same rule is applied to future new couples, tell me whether the world's population will increase or decrease, why will it remain the same?
It would decrease because of child mortality
Blame everything except the actual problem. The real problem is the banking industry manipulating currency.
