Missed opportunity to show off Dead or Alive’s stage design! The series is known for having a lot of the most interactive stages in the genre, especially 5.
i agree their stages have TONs of things to interact with and a lot of the highest damage combos rely on using stage gimmicks and then some of them actively feature into the games complex stun system too
Some stages get pick because of frame drops. Stages are often the most graphically demanding part of fighting games. In Them's Fighting Herds, you can choose to change the 3D stages into 2D pictures if you have a low performing pc. I wish more games had this feature because deleting some of the stages assets makes it more payable for people.
In Smash, this isn't possible now because the 3D is weirdly important to hitboxes. Since some of them involve the Z Axis. Realistically, this isnt hard to fix necessarily, but its there ig
@@illford Considering Smash Ult. is only playable on switch (without mystical methods), it wouldn't matter, everyone has the same hardware, + game is optimized enough. Non issue.
Fun fact. SFV training stage was banned in competitive play for a while. This caused a Ryan heart to lose a winning match because his opponent chose the training stage, voiding the match and forcing another match.
My favorite stage of all fighting games is the pit from mortal Kombat. Imagine stubbing it out with some cyborg above a 2 meter wide bridge with a 300 feet drop with impaled demons at the bottom. Metal af
I think Brawlhalla does an okay job with stages overall, one thing they didn't really account for at all was color swaps being a problem, alot of fighting games like Guilty Gear, Smash, and Skullgirls, have alternative color swaps, but pay attention to stage backgrounds and colors most of the time as to make sure their color swaps do not blend in with some of the characters. This is really frustrating to deal with in Brawlhalla because some people do have trouble seeing the differences in the shade of blue, and in 2's running blue on alot of the maps just give a better advantage, especially on maps like Fangwild where it's all blue, and in 2's blue isn't really blue and it's more like teal, and it's really easy to blend in with the background, of course competitively it isn't a problem since we have yet to see fangwild in comp play. Although it is rather annoying to deal with this sometimes, especially from a casual players perspective, I know there was a problem with some color on Demon Island being to hard to see with those small bushes in the background for a couple months and after people kept complaining about it BMG finally lightened it up a little so it wasn't as bothering, but it still is a bit. but none of these fighting games are perfect, but it just shows how much they really need to account for so nothing bad happens competitively.
4:29 Usually in Smash Ultimate, the stage roster is limited to around 8 or 9 stages. The most common ruleset I've seen is Coinbox, a weekly tournament co-hosted by Hungrybox (?), which uses the following 3 Stock - 7:00 No hazards Starters: Battlefield, Final Destination, Town & City, Pokemon Stadium 2, Smashville Counterpicks: Kalos Pokemon League, Small Battlefield, Yoshi's Story
This video is so informative that I went from a "Stages in fighting games like SF don't matter because they don't have hazards at all. it's just an aesthetical difference" to a guy who now knows how to take advantage of a stage great vid!
I wanna make a stage where when someone combos more than 7 hits, a girl in the background just flashes their ass. And to make sure that the stage doesn't get banned, I'd give every other stage some sort of gimmick that is very clearly unfair and the ass stage is the only one without that gimmick
My favourite stage is probably Corneria from Melee. I played on Hyrule Temple and Final Destination more, but they're specifically best for casual and competitive play respectively. Corneria's the perfect 'semi-casual' stage in my opinion.
One of my favorite Fighting Game stages is from a small Tekken-like fighter called Schwarzerblitz, and the stage is called "Doorway to Heaven," it's the top of a skyscraper.
My favourite is Balrog's Casino from both street fighter 2 and 5. I've never felt like many other fighting games have maps as memorable or cool as the OG.
In an interesting part about smash is that if you look at the stage list for competitive, all the stages boil down to beong simular to Pokemon Stadium, Battlefield or Final Destination
my favorite i1v1 and 2v2 map is shipreck falls, and i tink that brawlhalla shud allos moding the stage and the background, some maps looks EWWW like great hall, thundergard stadium, crystal temple, miami dome, etc
another potential issue with stages, if you're dealing with online tournaments, is lag caused by certain stages. i believe the white house stage in guilty gear strive is typically banned because some of the stage transitions and background details can cause lag spikes during matches.
I've always wished for there to be a preferred map in matchmaking queues instead of a banned stage, like I hate great hall but getting demon Island more often is worth dealing with it sometimes
you forgot to mention one crucial thing about stages in fighting games: music. of course this video was more about the technical side of stages, but for plebs like me, the music (if it's not possible to change the soundtrack) is usually the deciding factor. therefore, my favourite stage of all time is Hidden Retreat from Tekken 6.
I don't really have any favourite stages but there's one i absolutely hate would be destroyed namek from DBFighterZ because of the horrendous amount of fps drop it produces for me btw nice vid
My favorite stage is MVC2 Carnival stage. That stage still sticks out to me even as a kid. The crazy background the weird ass clown that freaked me out. There’s something I like about the sprites and 3D backgrounds of MVC2
great vid man really enjoyed. I think my favourite stages are Distant Planet and New Pork City from smash Brawl just because they are very nostalgic to me.
I love your videos and the subtle jokes here and there I just want to make a suggestion that when you make a joke you pause the background music for more emphasis. but 10/10 I wanna watch it again
Okay I get why people pick it, but I'm so sick of seeing the purgatory that is the training stage being played. Like for the love of god, can we please get anything else? Even a simple boxing ring or soemthing? Maybe put up a disco ball and some fairy lights in the training room idk. Also, One of my favortie stages is the Battlefield and Omega verisons of Electroplankton for the sole reason that you can use the background as a green screen. An actual answer is probabaly Mementos though.
This video in a nutshell: With the exception of obstructive or highly distracting elements in the foreground/background, stages have zero impact on traditional 2D fighting games. They're literally just there to give you something to look at, in game performance is completely unchanged by them. Stages really only matter in other fighting games because it's actually involved with the fight, and your interactions with the stage can change the whole match.
Smash ultimate actually added an omega mode which gives 2 comp maps (battle field and final destination) stage skins. U were able to do a sweaty 1v1 on a super Mario ahh happy go lucky backround 😂
I didn't know that about Tekken, what? I played it once a long time ago, never knew it had extended maps with wall breaks. Come to think of it, doesn't Marvel vs Capcom do something similar?
Completely unrelated question: I'm getting burnt out of brawl, any tips to not get burnt out easily? Oh yea. , I love how You've improved , I genuinely hope you get big one day, much love 💕
Depends, if you're just bored of a certain game mode you can try playing other ones. If you're bored of the game as a whole, the best option is to just take a break and play other games until you feel like playing brawl again
as a katars player, i can confirm that thge stage does matter; SERIOUSLY WHO THE FUCK DECIDED TO MAKE A STAGE THAT REMOVES EVERY COMBO FOR A WEAPON IF YOU'RE STANDING ON 90% OF THE FUCKING MAP?

More like unimportance. The only games where stages matter are Netherrealm games, Tekken, and DOA. The rest are basic and interchangeable on a tournament level.
The stage choice also matters in SFV, albeit to a lesser extent. Like Typhoon mentioned in the video, the beach stage is banned because the water can hide certain grounded projectiles and moves. The Fields of Fate stage has the same issue, but it is also just about impossible to tell how far from the right side corner you are on that stage due to the background all looking the same on that side. Additionally, if a stage has a background that moves too fast or erratically, it can cause motion sickness, which is why Skies of Honor is banned. Some stages may also have obstructive foreground elements that can obscure projectiles, moves, animations, and even entire characters, such as 90% of the stages in Brutal: Paws of Fury (I can't be the only person who knows this game exists, right?).
you know my beef with other smash rip offs is that their stages suck ass. they ain t creative or crazy just the same plane shit with difrent backgrounds
Too much complaining about too little. Whenever they ban a stage from tournaments it is the players fault at NOT being good enough to read their opponents inputs as they actually should.
