Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021.
Super Smash Bros. Is a crossover fighting game series published by Nintendo. The series was created by Masahiro Sakurai, who has directed every game in the series. The series is known for its unique gameplay objective which differs from that of traditional fighters, in that the aim is to increase damage counters and knock opponents off the stage instead of depleting life bars. The original Super Smash Bros. was released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64. The series achieved even greater success with the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee, which was released in 2001 for the GameCube and became the best selling game on that system. A third installment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was released in 2008 for the Wii. Although HAL Laboratory had been the developer for the first two games, the third game was developed through the collaboration of several companies. The fourth installment, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, was released in 2014 for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, respectively. The 3DS installment was the first for a handheld platform. A fifth installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, was released in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
Virtua Fighter is a series of fighting games created by Sega-AM2 and designer Yu Suzuki. The original Virtua Fighter was released in October 1993 and has received four main sequels and several spin-offs. The highly influential first Virtua Fighter game is widely recognized as the first 3D fighting game released. Similar to most other fighting games, the default gameplay system of the Virtua Fighter series involves two combatants needing to win two of three rounds, with each round being 30 seconds long or more. Combatants utilize various attacks in an attempt to deplete the other fighter's stamina gauge and deal a knockout (K.O.), winning a round. If a character is knocked out (or falls out) of the ring, their opponent wins the round in a Ring Out.
Lethal League is a competitive projectile fighting game where you have to hit an anti-gravity ball into the face of your opponent to win. The ball speeds up with every strike, up to explosively extreme velocities. Play intense local matches with friends and foes, challenge yourself in the singleplayer mode or battle it out online.

Another really unique fighting game is rushdown revolt, it's a platform fighter but it takes a lot of cues from traditional fighters, it uses a regular healthbar but separated into bands that determine how much knockback you take, and shields are one-sided so you can get crossed up, but by far the coolest part about the game is the spark system. Basically, hitting your opponent with anything will grant you a spark, which you can use to cancel any move into a rush (an 8-way dash that's both ground and air ok) or a jump, even on whiff, or spend it to do a massive, crazy fast super jump in any direction. The spark system allows for tons of insane movement, combos and pressure, and it gives the game a level of player expression unlike almost anything else out there.
If you read all this for some reason go check out the game, it's completely free to play on steam and has basically zero microtransactions

7:00 Fun fact about the PlayStation's dev history: despite "switching" to 3D, the PS1 never got a 3D GPU. It's actually still 2D only.
Instead, to get 3D, they added a 3rd chip called the "Geometry Transform Engine" which takes polygon data from the CPU, does the projection math to convert it to 2D shapes, and then sends that 2D data to the GPU.
This means that the PSX never had true floating point support, which is what causes the blurry messed up antialiasing on the polygons, creating the signature look

I think one other thing that helped get people into smash (at least for me anyway) was the sheer variety of things you actually did besides fighting. Playing with my family was fun yeah but I don't think I would've been hooked nearly as much if the games didn't have things like break the targets, board the platforms (which sadly never returned), the adventure modes and other things you could do.
Break the targets especially works as a really good character tutorial while also just being fun to bang your head against in Melee since there are character specific techniques you'd need to figure out in order to pass some of them such as young links BtT being unbeatable unless you use a wall jump to get out of the starting area and if you've used Link, you'd know that his regular incarnation can't wall jump.

Virtua Fighter technically wasn't a 3D fighting game, it was more of a 2.5D fighter like SFIV, V, and VI. The first 2 VFs (and the first 2 Tekkens) *didn't* have sidesteps or true 3D movement. The 1st fighting game to actually feature sidestepping was Battle Arena Toshinden, the weapons based 3D fighters which was quickly overshadowed by Soul Edge (which figured out simple sidestepping on it's first try). VF3 introduced a dodge button and Tekken 3 finally stapled Soul Edge style sidesteps onto their "3D" games while Soulcalibur on the Dreamcast was literally 8-Way-Running circles around them.

His ideas of a fighting game is pretty loose. There's quite a lot of pvp competitive games out there. There's a fine line with traditional fighting game and their design that inspires a lot of other games to use their similarity in gameplay. The platform brawlers like the melee, smash ,brawlhalla, and all the other countless knock-offs of the old Mario brother versus mode, took elements of fighting games to improve on gameplay.

Yomi hustle is the first fighting game that actually let me enjoy the parts of fighting games that are actually supposed to be fun and finally feel those 'chess' like elements that people talk about. Fighting games are just not only really complicated, perhaps overly so at times, but they almost universally are terrible at teaching their mechanics. I seriously think that if a game actually tried (like I hope SF6 is) that it wouldn't be that hard to get into a mainstream traditional fighter. But when most fighting games have almost no single player content, and have tutorials that range from garbage to nonexistent, it's no wonder that it's so hard to get into a game. Even games with supposedly great tutorials like Guilty Gear Xrd are still in all honesty still not great by the standards of most non-fighting games and the fact that tutorials like that are considered good by fighting game standards says a lot about how dire the scene is in this regard. (I would argue that Them's Fightin Herds has a much better tutorial but is unfortunately too small of a game for most people to have noticed it it seems.)
Yomi is great though because even when you're playing your very first match and just goofing around with randos pressing buttons, you're already starting off as if you had been practicing Street Fighter for hundreds of hours. You basically start minute one with perfect execution, perfect reaction time, perfect game knowledge (at least in terms of what your moves will do), and the ability to do things like whiff punish and follow up moves into combos with ease. Like you can't just drop a combo cause you flubbed an input or didn't know what to follow it up with. So as a result right away you skip all the annoying things that need to be tutorialized with most fighting games and skip right to the chess-like mindgames, which are much more intuitive to just play around with and learn

    • @typhoonbh
      @typhoonbh  2 роки тому +9

Yep exactly, fighting games are notoriously bad when it comes to tutorials, it’s why a lot of people end up searching on UA-cam instead, but Yomi prides itself in not needing a training mode as you can understand everything from the beginning.

Btw if you enjoy yomi I HIGHLY suggest Battlecon. It's basically a board game equivalent to Yomi hustle. It has had 10 years to perfect its core mechanics and update its characters, so it is extremely fun and well-balanced. There's more than 80 characters and EVERY matchup could last 50+ games because of how deep the combat system is. By buying a box with 10 characters (should buy V4 btw), you have enough for a few hundred games.

Pokken Tournament took an interesting route by using its unique Phase Shift system to blend two fighting game subgenres together, those being 2D fighters such as Street Fighter (Duel Phase), and arena fighters such as Ultimate Ninja Storm (Field Phase).
It led to a unique type of balance and character expression among the playable pokemon, as certain playstyles would often fare better in one Phase or another (Zoners like Gardevoir and Chandelure are at their strongest in Field), while others still benefit most from frequently swapping between them (Pikachu Libre gets a buff every single time she wins a phase shift with certain moves).

Other than platform fighters, I've been noticing that team-based fighting games have been popping up. The King of Fighters, Marvel vs. Capcom, Chaos Breaker, Martial Masters, Kizuna Encounter and Pokken Tournament have popularized this trend. Rather than picking one character per match, you can pick more than one of them and you could keep or lose a fighter depending on how well you played.
There's also the 4-player 2D fighters like Street Fighter EX3 and Guilty Gear Isuka. Unfortunately they are less common than the team-based fighters. Nowadays, the market for 4-player 2D fighters has been nonexistent since games like Street Fighter V, Guilty Gear Xrd/Strive and the upcoming Street Fighter 6 lack 4-player game modes. Hopefully there has to be some company willing to bring the 4-player 2D fighter back to the mainstream.

I’d say the main reason fighters get their reputation of being hard is one issue: they arent super straightforward with what to learn, its very easy to take the wrong lessons from the game, confusing you and making things seem more difficult than they really are, fighting games actually gets simpler in a lot of ways as you get better, but then new complexity also arises, its very strange

Big missed opportunity to talk about touhou fighting games, specifically hisoutensoku which even has rollback.
It is quite tiring to see a bare minimum of innovation in fighting games anymore but I can't blame anyone but the community who scream everything is getting casualized or dumbed down as soon as they see something as simple as wallbreaks. Will always respect the balls tekken 4 had for how much stage interactivity it added.

It's agreed upon by a lot of people that don't know better that fighting games are hard.
It doesn't make it true, though.
Besides repetition I'd say fundamentals, or rather, what makes up a fighting game's interactions between two players as well as the theory that goes along with it, but sure.

    • @typhoonbh
      @typhoonbh  Рік тому

I guess what I meant by that is the barrier to entry is higher, casual players are more okay with learning other genres even if the game’s skill ceiling is high. In fighting games there is much less to blame when a match doesn’t go your way.

I see your point and agree that Indie fighting games are great due to their variety but I don't think that means that the majority of AAA fighting games are the same because we see that the elements that make each 2d fighter distinguished is it's mechanics and sense of movement such as comparing Street Fighter 5 to Guilty Gear Strive because even though both are 2d fighters, they both have elements and mechanics that set them apart from each other or even if we compare Street Fighter 4 to Street Fighter 5 with focus attacks that provide invincibility to attacks and close the distance with your opponent or v triggers that provide different abilities to the characters that enhance their gameplay.
Fighting games also have things that can make the game more than just a 1v1 such as Guilty Gear Xrd mini games that teach you how to play , Tekken force which works as a beat'em up, Soul Calibur 6 Libra of Soul which operates as an rpg, and Mortal Kombat 11 crypt which is a small open world to explore.
Fighting games are able to be as diverse as indie fighting games through their mechanics, gameplay intentions, and content which is why to help people get into fighting games developers should focus less on making a game for eSports and more on making a game that can be enjoyed in different ways due to the options which seems to be the case with Street Fighter 6.

More people in the FGC should look into For Honor now that these years have passed. It's changed a ton over the years and has been striving to create one of the only team-based fighting games with MOBA elements (ganking, positioning, role rotations). It still gets crap for things that happened years ago which don't even apply anymore.

1st. 5:35 ''not so long and execution heavy'' boy this guy needs to actually see 64 cause like the most broken and long combos in the series are there and prob even longer than games like sf third strike and really any 90' fighting game
2nd. wavedashing didn't exist in any fighting game previous to melee, wavedashing was named like that cause a DIFFERENT technique in Tekken had the same name (Im 99.999% sure so please let me know if Im wrong) and it was made that way to resemble it like there are very different techniques and really different inputs
3rd. wth is The Outfoxies like there is a very low chance Sakurai copied from this like it got very low sales + yes Namco helped in Brawl(realised in 2008, started development on '05) but like 64 realised 9 years earlier + the gameplay is very different from it like for example the ''platform'' of it isnt really used in The Outfoxies though I can say that the items concept is like sort of similar tho in each game they work very differently since on The Outfoxies is the main gameplan while on Smash is a secondary thing that most times is turned off
anyways good vid, recommend it 👍

    • @typhoonbh

4:55 I'm personally super tired of hearing this. Although there doesn't seem to be a proper subgenre name for this kind of game, I tend to call it "fighter platformer", rather than platform fighter. This is due to the fact that these games focus much more on the platforming aspect, and/or item/weapon use. Character differences are usually only cosmetic, and they either don't have any fighting moves of their own, or only have a few key abilities/normals, as you would expect from any other action oriented platformer. (Action platformers are mostly PvE for a reason.) I lump Outfoxies with games like Duck Game or Super Mario War.
